Staying Cool in SWLA In Southwest Louisiana, we have surefire ways to beat the summertime heat! When summer arrives in full force – the first stop for many visitors is the pool. Southwest Louisiana boasts three fabulous pool complexes with lazy rivers to keep you comfortable and entertained. L’Auberge Casino Resort entices guests outdoors with their tropical garden pool complex. Just a hint of imagination will transport you to the relaxing Caribbean. Grab a floatie and gently meander down the lazy river along lush green vegetation, beneath jungle island bridges, waterfalls, and around the pool area. Just down the boardwalk from L’Auberge, you’ll find the Golden Nugget. Their H2O Pool and Bar has

an exciting Las Vegas vibe, with upbeat music, contemporary seating, poolside cabanas, and lively libations. The extra-large pool features adult only and family sections, tanning ledges with in-water loungers, swim up daybeds, a swim up bar and a lazy river with slides. Sulphur Parks & Recreation (SPAR) Waterpark offers fun in the sun for all ages. This wild wet destination offers a 600-foot long Raging River, Larry’s Lazy River, 3 inner tube slides, 2 body slides, and the Lagoon Pool. Younger guests will enjoy Patch’s Splash Pad and Splash & Play Island, with fountains, tipping buckets, large and small-scale slides and a gigantic yellow bucket that dumps 500 gallons of water every two minutes!
Hot weather often has us craving cooler, lighter food. Southwest Louisiana’s solution – sno cones, popsicles and frozen daiquiris! Louisiana sno cones are special. Most sno cones are made with the chunky, coarse style of crushed ice, but the ice of a Louisiana sno cone is shaved, which makes the ice light and fluffy, like, SNOW! Along with a dizzying variety of flavors, these treats are also served “stuffed” with ice cream or with “cream” drizzled on top. Delish! The frozen treats don’t stop there. Local popsicle vendors Boombox Frozen Pops and Ice Cream are cooling the summer temps with their selection of gourmet pops. These popsicles are bringing fresh and bold flavors that are inspired by 80s tunes. Flavors to look for this summer are 99 Red Doubloons, Blue Moon on Mango and Sweet Child O Lime. And finally – the daiquiri. No summer evening is complete without the sweet taste of a frozen daiquiri. And lucky for travelers, we have several drive-up establishments to choose from and a TON of flavor combos!

Diversity and Black-owned Businesses Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana is a blend of diverse cultures and people. Like many cities across Louisiana, we celebrate one another through food and music. With delicious Creole cooking and toe-tapping Zydeco traditions, we enjoy our cultural gumbo every day of the year! To truly get a taste of Lake Charles, supporting local businesses is the way to go. The area is brimming with entrepreneurs and creatives, and we have a variety of Creole and black-owned businesses in Southwest Louisiana from coffee shops and restaurants to retail, venues - even local musicians with merchandise for sale. So, what does "Creole" mean for Southwest Louisiana? Creoles are Louisiana natives with a mixture of African-American, American Indian, French and Spanish heritage. The term has evolved over several centuries, at one
time being the descriptive phrase for the children of first generation French and Spanish immigrants who populated the Louisiana Territory and after Louisiana became a state. But over time, with the intermixing of Africans, white settlers and Native Americas, a whole new identity was created, and the word “Creole” was the term that brought a melting pot of people under a social umbrella. The Creoles were some of the “first families of Louisiana,” and official records reflect that they have been here for over 300 years. Creole soul can be recognized in the religious, culinary, social, and entertainment expressions of these people with deep Louisiana roots. To learn more about Creole Culture, check out VisitLakeCharles.org/creole, and for a list of black-owned businesses, go to VisitLakeCharles.org/blackowned.

groups, including the Children’s Theatre. For a full scope on Imperial Calcasieu’s history, meander over to the Imperial Calcasieu Museum* where a 300-yearold Sallier Oak graces the grounds with it’s lush shade and roots that run as deep as the culture in Southwest Louisiana. Learn about the early days of the Lake Charles area and view exhibits on display. On the west side of the river, the Henning Cultural Center sits next to The Grove Park and Heritage Square Pavilion where outdoor events take place. The Cultural Center is tucked way beneath sleepy oak trees, and it features local art and exhibits year-round along with artifacts and information on Sulphur’s past as a sulfur mining town. The DeQuincy Railroad Museum* in the northern part of Calcasieu Parish is located inside the Kansas City Southern

Railroad Depot built in 1923, also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are two passenger waiting rooms, a central agent/ticket office, a baggage room, and an open veranda on the bottom floor. On the museum grounds, you will also find a 1913 steam locomotive, two vintage cabooses and a 1947 Pullman passenger coach! Each April, the Louisiana Railroad Days Festival celebrates the history of DeQuincy as a railroad town!
