ALL ABOUT STUDYING ABROAD What is Studying Abroad?

Studying abroad is the act of a student pursuing an educational opportunity in a country other than their own. For Lakehead students, this means spending either a semester, a full year, or just a few weeks over the summer at one of our international partner institutions. Lakehead University has exchange partnerships with many universities around the globe. Students who study abroad can often receive credits towards their degree at Lakehead. Studying abroad is designed to enrich students’ academic experiences and facilitate personal growth and development.

WHY STUDY ABROAD?

WHEN CAN I STUDY ABROAD?

Students typically study abroad in either their second or third year. Students can study abroad for just one semester, or for a full year if they choose.

In order to decide which semester or year is best for you to study abroad, we always recommend contacting your program Chair. They are most familiar with your program requirements and can advise you on the best timing to study abroad. Furthermore, many of our partner universities also offer shortterm summer programs, which can include academic courses, language courses, and cultural experiences. These allow students to study abroad during the summer months, taking one or two academic courses. Summer programs are typically between 2 and 6 weeks in length.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS In order to be eligible to study abroad, students must meet the following requirements: • Have a minimum of 75% academic average • Be considered an outstanding ambassador for Lakehead University • Plan to study abroad in their second or third year NOTE: Consult with your program Chair to discuss the best time for you to study abroad, as each academic program is different. All students who meet the eligibility requirements will be called for an interview with an International Student Advisor. Lakehead University International is highly committed to working with all eligible students to find an international experience that will work for them. However, please note that studying abroad is a competitive process, so meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee a spot at your top choice.

HOW TO APPLY STEP 1 DO YOUR RESEARCH Make sure to thoroughly research Lakehead’s various partner universities and ensure that the institutions you are interested in offer courses in English that coincide with your academic program. First, locate the partner institution’s website and look for information pertinent to exchange students and course offerings in English. Pay attention to things like accommodation options and semester dates to make sure it is a good fit. Students can list their top 3 institution choices on the Outgoing Exchange Application Form.

STEP 2 APPLY TO THE INTERNATIONAL OFFICE Once you have done some research and have your top 3 partner institutions selected, you can begin your application to the Lakehead International Study Abroad Program. In order to apply, you will need to fill out the following forms: • Outgoing Exchange Application Form • Personal Reference Form • Academic Reference Form You will also need to submit: • An unofficial copy of your academic transcripts • A one-page typed Statement of Interest, explaining why you want to study abroad The forms can be found through the following link: www.lakeheadu.ca/international/exchange/outgoing Once your application is complete, submit it to the Lakehead International office in person or via email at studyabroad@lakeheadu.ca

STEP 3 THE INTERVIEW

All eligible students will be contacted shortly after they submit their application to attend a brief interview with a study abroad advisor. During the interview, we will get to know you more and discuss your reasons for wanting to study abroad. We can also discuss any questions you may have about studying abroad or your selected partner institutions.

After being accepted by Lakehead International, there will be a separate application you will need to complete for your selected host institution. Once you are accepted to the program, we will guide you through the next steps of applying to your host university and helping you to prepare for your exchange abroad including selecting courses, securing accommodation, and handling immigration matters.

Lakehead University International’s agreements with our overseas partner universities mean that in most cases, Lakehead students are only required to pay standard tuition fees to Lakehead University, and are not required to pay additional tuition fees to the host university. However, you will need to cover your accommodations, living expenses, and travel costs. To offset these expenses, Lakehead International provides bursaries for every outgoing exchange student. Some of our exchange partners also offer additional funding, so be sure to ask an International Student Advisor about financing options.

By completing a formal document called the Letter of Permission, you can confirm that the courses you take abroad will transfer back to your degree at Lakehead University before you depart on your exchange. This process assures that the Chair of your academic program(s) has approved the credit transfer of the courses you will be taking at your host institution.

IT WILL AFFECT MY AVERAGE & DELAY MY GRADUATION DATE The courses you take abroad are transferred to your degree as gradeless credits, meaning your academic average will not be affected. However, you must complete the Letter of Permission to ensure the courses you take abroad will transfer to your degree at Lakehead. We also offer a variety of short-term summer programs if you do not wish to study abroad during the fall or winter semesters. Please note that if you are a recipient of a scholarship, your grades WILL count towards the renewal of your scholarship.

I DON’T KNOW THE LANGUAGE The majority of our partner institutions offer a wide range of courses taught in English, meaning you do not need to speak another language to study abroad. However, we do encourage students to take a language course while in their host country in order to fully immerse themselves in their new culture and environment and maximize their experience.

IT WON’T WORK WITH MY ACADEMIC PROGRAM Lakehead International has partnerships with several universities around the globe that are compatible with most of Lakehead University’s academic programs. Moreover, students in programs with strict requirements are welcome to take part in a short-term summer exchange opportunity. Regardless of your academic program, there is a study abroad option that will work for you!

AVAILABLE DESTINATIONS BILATERAL PARTNERS/SPECIFIC SUMMER PROGRAMS Lakehead University has several bilateral exchange agreements and summer programs with universities around the world. A Bilateral exchange is a formal partnership agreement between Lakehead and another institution, in which students are hosted by a partner university abroad but are only required to pay their tuition fees to Lakehead. As part of the European exchange programs there are some universities with Erasmus Plus. Erasmus+ is an excellent opportunity that connects Lakehead University with select universities throughout Europe. This program offers Lakehead University students a chance to receive a generous amount of funding for participating in an exchange program abroad. Erasmus+ opportunities are available for students at both the Bachelor and Master levels.

CONSORTIUMS Lakehead University is also involved in a few consortium agreements. Consortiums provide Lakehead University students with a network of universities in a specific region where they can study. Consortiums also provide students with a tuition waiver, meaning they are only required to pay tuition fees to Lakehead.

RESEARCH PROGRAMS Research programs allow students to carry out research in another country. Typically, these opportunities are available to students at the undergraduate, Master, and Ph.D levels and are open to students in most academic programs. Safety & Security Information: There are no significant safety and security concerns in Scandinavia. The overall safety and security situation is similar to that of Canada. Students should take normal security precautions. The crime rate in Scandinavian countries is very low; however, petty crime such as purse snatching occurs in the summer, particularly in populated areas during the tourist season. Travellers intending on trekking, mountaineering, hiking or skiing should ensure they have appropriate health coverage and use a guide.

POLITICAL CLIMATE Politics vary among the Scandinavian countries; however, they all share an interest in economic opportunity and greater equality for all citizens. Scandinavian countries have a combination of high living standards and low income disparity. Politics in Norway and Sweden take place in the framework of a parliamentary representative democratic constitutional monarchy. Denmark, instead, is a constitutional monarchy and the political system of Denmark is a multi-party structure, with several parties represented in parliament. The Government of Finland is a stable parliamentary representative democracy. 9

North2North CONSORTIUM AGREEMENT

North2North is composed of over thirty Scandinavian institutions in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and Norway. A student exchange through north2north increases student opportunities to contribute meaningfully in building human capacity in the Arctic and have extracurricular experience related to the North. A North2North exchange aims to give students competence and experience they can benefit from in future professional and/ or academic plans. Due to the large network of participating universities, the North2North program works for students in nearly every academic program.

PROGRAMS OFFERED IN ENGLISH As a result of the large number of participating institutions, there are endless program options for students. In particular, students from Natural Resource Management, Humanities, and Indigenous Studies have benefited from this unique consortium.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES • Each summer, North2North, in collaboration with the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs runs a program called the Korea Arctic Academy. This fully-funded program introduces students to Arctic development in Asia through interesting lectures, seminars, and field trips. • Students opting to study at a university in northern Norway can complete an application to receive extra funding to subsidize the costs associated with their exchange. Scholarships of up to $5500 are available.

Studied at Stockholm University in Sweden through North2North My name is Bailey Giroux, and I attended the North2North program at Stockholm University in Sweden. When I was first introduced to the North2North program through Lakehead’s international office, I was immediately interested and excited by the opportunity to further my studies in an international Northern country. I was born and raised in the North and love my Northern community, so I was interested in seeing how other Northern countries operated and potentially bringing new knowledge and innovative solutions to problems back home in Canada. Through my exchange to Sweden with North2North I have gained confidence, a sense of independence, and a passion for travel. I believe that so much can be learned when you immerse yourself in a new culture and language, and the knowledge I have gained through my experience has proven itself useful both professionally and academically as it has broadened my perspective of the world and cultures different from my own. For me, the highlight of my trip was being able to meet some truly wonderful people and having them introduce me to new things, while developing a special bond through our adventures together. I now have wonderful friends around the globe who I hope to visit throughout my life. Through the North2North program I became passionate about student travel, which spurred me to participate in Lakehead International Department’s events once I had returned to Canada. My involvement in these events led to a peer mentorship opportunity and later a job in the International Office assisting other international and exchange students in their journey abroad. After participating in the North2North program it became clear to me that I should pursue a career in international recruitment, as I thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from other countries and cultures and encouraging them to visit my own country so they could experience my culture for themselves. My advice to students considering participating in a North2North exchange would be this: be open and receptive to new opportunities, say “yes” more than you say “no” and remember that some of the most important lessons in life are taught outside of the classroom, so always keep your heart and mind open to others!

Ontario RhoneAlpes Program (ORA) CONSORTIUM AGREEMENT

ORA consists of ten universities located in four regions in France. Six of the Universities are located in Lyon, two in Grenoble and one each in Saint-Étienne and Chambray/Annecy. The ORA program connects Ontario post-secondary students with French universities, allowing them to participate in an exchange that contributes both to their Ontario degree and helps to improve French language skills. The program exchanges 65 full time students from each region, for a total of 130 students per year in the program.

SUMMER PROGRAMS ORA also administers the popular Summer Language Program, a fourweek program in which students from around the world study French and learn about the French culture. It offers a unique and highly enjoyable learning experience in the classroom, as well as supporting an extracurricular program which opens up many different regional places of interest to students. The ORA Summer Research Program offers funded research opportunities in France for students enrolled in the fields of Science, Engineering, and Health Sciences.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES • The ORA program administers scholarships for all participants, using funds provided by the Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities. Students are eligible to receive $1600 for a one-semester exchange and $2500 for a full-year exchange.

My name is Josh Vissers, and I am a student in the Outdoor Recreation, Parks & Tourism program. I attended Dalarna University for the Fall 2016 semester. Out of the options I had, the Borlange campus at Dalarna offered the most courses similar to those in my program at Lakehead. Borlange is a smaller city north of the capital, Stockholm. This meant not spending my semester in a large city, and being able to travel further north but also to visit the southern cities easily by train. My advice for any student wishing to go to Sweden or to any other country on exchange would be to make the most of every school field trip or exchange trip offered. At Dalarna they would regularly take all the exchange students on trips to explore the country and culture. One of the most memorable experiences was an overnight trip to one of the National Parks in Sweden with a group of friends from my Residence. There were students from Spain, France and other countries in Europe and every one of them had grown up in the city with very little exposure to hiking and camping. They were all very willing to hike to Sweden’s largest waterfall and set up camp on top of it. It was a great experience and an awesome trip exploring an area new to me and an activity new to many of them. To those considering taking part in an academic exchange, I suggest you make the most of it and explore as much as you can, you’ll learn a lot from the places and people you meet!

Safety & Security Information: There are some identifiable safety and security concerns in France and the security situation could change with little notice. Students should exercise a high degree of caution at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities. This is due to a high amount of petty crime such as skilled thievery wherein criminals will target tourists, as well as a threat of terrorism throughout the country. My name is Hailey Shchepanik and I attended Nanyang Technological University in Singapore for the Winter semester of my third year. As a student attending Lakehead who was born and raised in Thunder Bay, I was eager to study in a city other than my own after spending my first two years here. Initially, I considered taking a year off to travel, but when I began to research exchange options, I found that it would be the perfect fit for me! Going on exchange allowed me to continue my studies while simultaneously seeing the world. After four months in Singapore, and two additional months in Southeast Asia, I was able to visit eight different countries altogether. During my exchange, I had the chance to take many biology classes that aren’t offered at Lakehead, like a Stem Cell Research class, and Drug Development – which has sparked my interest in the pharmaceutical industry. Although Singapore has a reputation for being expensive, I found that student living costs are incredibly affordable. Meals on campus range from $2 - $4, and residence for the entire semester was under $1,300.

Living in Singapore allowed me to learn about their unique culture first hand. During my exchange, I lived with a Singaporean student who was always happy to answer any questions I had about the country, social customs, and everyday lifestyle. The locals were incredibly friendly, always going above and beyond when I needed help. One of the most memorable parts of my exchange was getting to meet so many new people. Nanyang greets over 800 exchange students from all over the world–with plenty of students from Canada and the US eager to escape the cold winter! If I had to pick one piece of advice to give students considering an exchange it would be: DO IT! With a bit of preparation and research, anyone can go on an exchange at one of the excellent universities that Lakehead is partnered with. Mexico City, Mexico. The International Summer Program is taught in English and focuses on the study of Mexican and Latin American realities. The program includes Spanish language classes and cultural tours around the Mexico City area. Students must choose four courses among the program’s academic course catalogue. By the end of the program, students will have covered 80 hours of academic coursework in addition to the Spanish language classes.

PROGRAMS OFFERED IN ENGLISH The International Summer School offers an array of courses in the fields of: • Economy • Environment and Climate Change • Population and Urbanization

In addition to the academic courses, students will be offered Latin American culture and Spanish language courses. The Spanish as a Foreign Language course is offered at the Elementary, Basic and Intermediate levels.

Mérida, Mexico. EBC (Escuela Bancaria y Comercial) was founded in 1929 and is considered to be Mexico’s first private business school with approximately 14,000 students. The 3 week program offered at EBC combines Spanish language learning with cultural excursions. The program includes 45 hours of Spanish language instruction and 50 hours of cultural activities.

PROGRAMS OFFERED IN ENGLISH No knowledge of Spanish is required. Students will compare and contrast cultural differences between Mexico and the student’s country. Students will become familiar with general social protocols as well as academic policies at EBC. Cultural activities allow students to explore the beautiful and unique regions in Merida. Students will take part in a day trip to Yucatan.

BRAZILIAN REAL Political Climate Brazil is a democratic republic with a President who is both head of state and head of government. There is a multi-party system in Brazil. Safety & Security Information: There are identifiable concerns as the safety and security situation could change with little notice and students should exercise a high degree of caution at all times, monitor local media and follow the instructions of local authorities. However, the city of Santa Cruz (where UNISC is located) is rather safe and prosperous compared to other major cities in Brazil. Crime is a serious problem throughout Brazil. Rates of both petty crime and violent crime, including homicide, are highest in urban centres. Unaccompanied female travellers should exercise caution in dealing with strangers or recent acquaintances, and be extremely cautious about accepting invitations. Nationwide demonstrations and labour strikes occur regularly to protest against government corruption, and can escalate. Visa Requirements: A visa is required to study abroad in Brazil and students can do the application online or by courier. Weather by season: In Santa Cruz do Sul, the summers are long, hot, and muggy, the winters are short and cool, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round. Santa Cruz do Sul, Brazil. The University of Santa Cruz do Sul is a Brazilian non-profit private university located in the setting of the large town of Santa Cruz do Sul, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with four other campuses in Capão da Canoa, Sobradinho, Venâncio Aires, and Montenegro.

DESCRIPTION Founded in 1993, Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul (UNISC) is a private higher education institution with its main campus located in the urban setting of the large town of Santa Cruz do Sul. Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, UNISC is a large higher education institution with a student population of approximately 15,000. UNISC offers courses and programs leading to officially recognized higher education degrees such as bachelor degrees, master degrees, doctorate degrees in several areas of study, as well as short-term exchange programs.

SUMMER PROGRAM UNISC offers an International Summer Program that is taught entirely in English. The program runs for 1 week and includes field trips and lectures on a variety of topics. During this program, students can choose to stay with a Brazilian host family or find alternate accommodations. This program is very low-cost and would be a great experience for students who want to learn more about Brazilian culture.

Thessaloniki, Greece. American College of Thessaloniki is situated in Northern Greece and is part of Anatolia College, of the leading educational institutions in Greece. ACT offers a wide array of courses in the fields of: Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as Technology and Service.

PROGRAMS OFFERED IN ENGLISH Their regular summer program includes 1-2 elective courses and 2 of the excursions from the Go Greek in Greece program. Other optional trips will be offered over this summer program as well. Students can see a list of the other summer courses, as well as the academic calendar for the program dates.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES • The “Go Greek in Greece” is an experiential learning program which allows students to experience Greek hospitality, heritage and culture while earning credits in humanities. A group of exchange students from all over the world will explore ancient and modern Greece through class, organized trips, events and service opportunities. SUMMER PROGRAMS Lakehead University only sends students on short term summer programs for this Institution. The ACT Summer Program runs tentatively from mid June to mid July. The fee for the Go Greek program includes: course credit / course fees, museum entrance fees related to their relative course, accommodation, transportation to campus and included trips / activities, trips (as advertised), service learning, access to ACT services, and an ACT staff member dedicated full-time to this program. Some funding opportunities may exist for this program. In Thessaloniki, students reside in studio apartments (private or double) with equipped kitchen facilities, so they can cook as they wish. The ACT campus has a cafe with lunches ranging from 3€-5€. Many students also choose to eat at local restaurants with prices ranging from 4€ for gyros, 7€ for a home cooked dish at an average restaurant, to 25€ for a full meal at a fancy restaurant.

Safety & Security Information: There are no significant safety and security concerns in Greece and the overall safety and security situation is similar to that of Canada. Students should take normal security precautions. Petty crime, such as purse snatching does occur, especially in larger cities. Avoid certain areas after dark and remain vigilant at all times. Only use ATMs in reputable businesses and public areas. Visa Requirements: A student visa is required for stays longer than 90 days. Weather by season: The climate in Greece is typical of the Mediterranean climate: mild and rainy winters, relatively warm and dry summers and, generally, extended periods of sunshine throughout most of the year. From mid-June to August, the temperatures rise and heat waves of 40°C are common.
