“At Lakehead I got much more than I Expected. I became part of something.

There is an amazing atmosphere at Lakehead. The campus is large enough to encourage diversity, yet small enough that you’re able to recognize people everywhere you go. It’s a unique community that I’m proud to be part of!” - Rayelle Sowers | Environmental Management student

INAUGURAL RECIPIENT OF THE PRINCE OF WALES AWARD FOR SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY (2013) Jocelin Teron | Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry “For me, Lakehead offered an exceptional sense of community,” says Jocelin. As early as first year, Jocelin found the hands-on academic training, the openness of professors, and the close-knit classes allowed her to build an unparalleled student experience. During the summers in university, she had a wide range of jobs from breeding bird surveys in southern Ontario, to industrial forestry work in north-eastern British Columbia. By the time she was in her final year, she had helped organize student conferences related to her field of study and served as President of the Lakehead University Forestry Association. So it comes as no surprise that because of her volunteer activity, consulting, and professional development on the west coast, the Canadian Institute of Forestry awarded Jocelin the first-ever Prince of Wales Award for Sustainable Forestry just two years after graduating.

You are exceptional and unconventional. Lakehead students, faculty and staff are here because they embody these words that prospective students, current students, and alumni have used to describe our University. Whether you choose to continue your academic journey on our beautiful Thunder Bay or Orillia campus, it would be our pleasure and privilege to welcome you during the year Lakehead celebrates its 50th anniversary (1965-2015) and half a century of exceptional achievements. Lakehead University believes in student-centred resources and opportunities that help you build your unique path to realizing your dreams. We believe in intellectual freedom and unconventional pursuits of knowledge. We believe in the rich diversity of our students’ cultures and nations, and how your individuality contributes to our University community. We believe in our students — exceptional and unconventional individuals seeking an education that is about how to think, not what to think. Congratulations on all you have achieved. We believe in you, and look forward to facilitating the next step of your journey and all its possibilities. – Brian J.R. Stevenson, Ph.D President & Vice-Chancellor Lakehead University - Thunder Bay | Orillia

50 years strong

Exceptional. Unconventional. When Lakehead started its journey 50 years ago, who could have known the University would one day grow to encompass a new campus in Orillia. Or that it would eventually be home to 8,700 students from across Ontario, Canada and the world. Or have over 320 faculty conducting cutting-edge research. Or have 55,000 alumni around the world. Who could have known that its modest beginnings would flourish into what Lakehead is today? A lot can change in half a century, but some things haven’t. Lakehead students stand out now as much as ever—students who are eager for adventure, students who carve out their own vision for success, and students who seek innovative scholarship.

That’s why Lakehead has always valued, above all else, relationship: between you and your fellow students, between you and the student services staff who help along the way, and between you and your professors. Lakehead student Roman Jakubowski says: “Instead of walking into crowded lecture halls every day, I walk into classrooms full of my close friends. We’re doing something we love and we’re all putting our own unique spin on it. I couldn’t picture myself anywhere other than Lakehead.”

That’s the Lakehead difference.

Place June 4, 1946 The Lakehead Technical Institute (LTI) was officially established by Order-in-Council of the Ontario Government.

Lakehead’s motto, suggested by English professor

Carlo Fonda, was established on June 20, 1959

Ad Augusta Per Angusta: Achievement through effort

January 5, 1948 The first twelve students were admitted into a two-year Mining Technology program.

September 26, 1956 The cornerstone of LTI’s first building was laid. In 1957, LTI became the Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology (LCAST).

July 1, 1965 The Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology became Lakehead University, with the first Lakehead degrees in Arts and Science granted that year.

September 1991 A Student Centre events hall opened. It was built through the efforts of the Student Union and funded entirely through student support.

1996 Paleo-DNA Lab opens in 1996, one of three of its kind in the world that analyses ancient DNA.

September 2005 The Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s charter class began their studies.

September 2006 Lakehead University’s Orillia campus welcomed its first students.

September 2010 The first building of the Orillia Campus permanent facility opens. It’s the first in Canada to be built entirely to LEED® standards for environmental sustainability.

September 2013 The new Faculty of Law officially opened. It’s the first new law school in Ontario in 44 years.

Journeys Brick by brick, student by student, Lakehead University began its journey, much like a student such as you, starting off on an educational path with a goal in mind, excited about the still unknown experiences and events that will lead you to it. Not all journeys lead to the destination that you might expect. For example Mike Rapino graduated in 1989 with a Business degree and today he is the CEO of Live Nation. Duncan Weller completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1989 as well, and went on to

win the Governor General’s Award for his children’s book, The Boy from the Sun. Last, but not least, there is Shy-Ann Hovorka who in 2012 won six Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards. These are just three of the exceptional and unconventional voyages that Lakehead has launched for so many of its students. All unique. All transformative. All far from ordinary.

Exceptional. Unconventional.

Using Lakehead as a launch pad to a career with NASA Colette Lepage | Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical), Graduated 1999 Colette grew up being curious about how the universe works but never imagined she’d get the chance to make a career out of it. After getting her diploma in Chemical Engineering Technology, she enrolled at Lakehead to further her education. While studying her degree in Chemical Engineering, Colette learned a lot about working in a team and not being afraid to talk to people at any level. These skills helped her land a job at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre, where she’s part of a multinational team of scientists and engineers.

“ I came to Lakehead because of the small class sizes and the nature-filled environment. But the University offered me so much more. I got involved in the African and Caribbean Association. I met a lot of interesting people from different backgrounds, and I got to share my culture with others.”

“ At Lakehead, getting involved is really easy. I first started volunteering for LUSU events, and now I am the president of Lakehead University International Club (LUIC). Lakehead is giving me the opportunity to learn new skills, learn things about myself that I have never known before, and to push myself harder to achieve what I want.”

“ While at Lakehead, I discovered my passion for the Gerontology program which I had no clue about before. I always shared close relationships with older adults, and finding out about a program related to my interest was the greatest gift from Lakehead. I have also had the opportunity to help start a club with my friends that helps to bring Canadian and international students together.”

“I came to Canada because it is the home of some of the world’s top research facilities. Studying at Lakehead has given me exciting cross-cultural experiences and when I graduate, I will have a globally recognized degree. Imagine learning in supportive academic environments where professors are approachable and classrooms reflect the cultural diversity of our land. My experiences at Lakehead have helped me to get to know new cultures and new people from all over the world.”

“ Every single moment that I’ve had in Canada will be part of me forever, but some of them I will remember clearly, such as my first day of classes, my first snowball fight and presenting an article at an international conference. Working as a House President in residence has changed my experience in Canada, too, because I have improved my English and made so many new friends. Canada is amazing and welcomes everyone, and I always will feel at home when remembering my time here.”

“ On my exchange, I met people not only from Ireland, but also from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden, France, and many more countries! My experience gave me a big self esteem boost, as I learned just how much I can accomplish as I discovered strength and independence that I never knew I had before.”

“ I have always wanted to be able to travel somewhere in the context of ‘living’ rather than merely ‘visiting.’ Stepping outside of our culture and into the day-to-day life of another community and country gave me a whole new perspective on things. What I’ve learned is how similar we all are. After a little while you begin to notice that aside from differences such as language and culture, we are all cut from the same cloth.”

11

ABORIGINAL CULTURE Throughout its history, Lakehead University has developed strong connections and partnerships with the First Nation, Non-Status, Métis, and Inuit peoples of Northwestern Ontario and Canada. We have sought to develop innovative programming that honours and celebrates Aboriginal heritage while providing culturally appropriate support for the next generation of Aboriginal learners.

Students will develop an understanding of Aboriginal culture, heritage, and language by participating in activities that heighten their awareness of Aboriginal issues and identity. Various programs and courses are available to learn about Aboriginal language, history and culture, and they are available to all students. Other options include an Indigenous Speaker Series, Elders program, smudging, sweat lodge ceremonies, feasts, traditional teachings, cross-cultural workshops, pow wows, art displays, and much more!

Keri Cheechoo | Long Lake #58 First Nation Native Access Program, Honours Bachelor of Arts (English), Bachelor of Education, Master of Arts “Lakehead University’s Native Access Program allowed me to successfully navigate university. The Program was a stepping-stone to my academic success. My advice to you: invest in your future; you are a mirror to those around you. The dynamics at Lakehead University are incredible; the cohesiveness within my discipline and the interaction with students in other disciplines has always been a beneficial experience for me.” 12

Aboriginal Cultural and Support Services (ACSS) For individuals of Aboriginal ancestry, Lakehead University’s ACSS provides a culturally supportive environment for First Nation, Non-Status, Métis, and Inuit learners. Through a wide range of academic, individual, cultural and transitional services and support, the ACSS assists Aboriginal students in reaching their academic goals. All students have access to the Aboriginal Resource Centre and Lounge, which consists of an Elders’ room, computer lab, relaxation area, and a place to study or visit with peers. Access Programs Lakehead University offers two special entry pathways for Aboriginal students to gain admission. The Native Access Program (NAP) and the Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP) are both designed to increase opportunities and successfully integrate students into Lakehead University. For more information on these programs, please see their full descriptions on page 51.

Brianna Decontie | Kitigan Zibi, Quebec Native Nurses Entry Program “I moved to Thunder Bay from another province, and the Native Nurses Entry Program staff and teachers made me feel welcomed and gave me a safe place to learn. The friends I have made though the program continually encourage me to move further in my education. Being in the program has given me insight into what a Bachelor degree will feel like and how the work load will be. Entering the program was the best thing I could have done for myself because I have made lifelong friends and I am enhancing my education at the same time.”

SMALL SCHOOL ADVANTAGE: GIVING STUDENTS A PLACE TO THRIVE Britt Bailey | Biology & Daphne Haggarty | Psychology Currently Medical School Students Britt and Daphne are two big reasons why Lakehead’s women’s varsity Nordic Ski team can boast 10 consecutive OUA championships and 10 of the last 11 team titles for Cross Country University National Championships. While both maintained a demanding training schedule throughout their undergraduate years, Lakehead’s small class sizes, exceptional research opportunities, and strong academic relationships between professors and students enabled them to flourish in other aspects of their university experience. As a result, they were both accepted to medical school when they applied. “We always felt valued as students,” they both agree. “At Lakehead, our contribution mattered and still matters.” Photo Credit: Martin Kaiser

From textbook to travel Corey Anderson | Honours Bachelor of Outdoor Recreation As part of his program, Corey had the opportunity to take a “Battlefield Tourism” class and travel to Europe to learn more about the history, monuments and battlefields of the First and Second World Wars. “I initially decided to take this course as a step toward my goal of becoming a global citizen with a diverse travel and education background,” says Corey. The class also gave Corey the opportunity to do some personal research about Aboriginal Canadian representation and achievements in relation to the wars. He was able to search for past connections with his great uncles, grandfathers, and a great aunt who were involved in various military operations, but had the good fortune to return home. “It’s one thing to read books or watch movies,” he says, “but to be there, standing on the ground where soldiers fought and died really allowed me to truly experience what had occurred throughout the World Wars.”

FIELD EXPERIENCE WITH MY PROFESSORS Katelyn Weel | Honours Bachelor of Arts & Science (Environmental Sustainability) Katelyn was attracted to the interdisciplinary aspect of the environmental sustainability program because it bridges academics, economics and politics. “I have a strong environmental awareness and when I chose my program,” says Katelyn, “I wanted to take that awareness and turn it into something I could use in real life.” And she’s had nothing but hands-on opportunities since. As a work-study student, she worked for her professors on a study of natural biofilms in Lake Simcoe and Lake Couchiching, which gave her practical field and lab skills as well as the opportunity to present a research paper. This led to summer work for an engineering firm, and the following summer, she was hired on the spot as a field technician on an agricultural soil study while staying in Oslo, Norway. 33

Access Programs

In addition to our regular entry pathways for admission, Lakehead University offers a number of special access opportunities that allow students who may not meet the regular admission requirements, but who demonstrate potential for success, to start university. These programs often feature specialized supports and programming to help students make the transition to university and develop skills to ensure their academic success.

Aboriginal Access Programs

Gateway

Apply Directly

No Application, Automatically Considered

At Lakehead University, we are committed to promoting opportunities through education for people of Aboriginal ancestry. We offer a wide range of programs designed to encourage you, as an Aboriginal person who might not meet the regular or mature student admission criteria, to pursue a university education in an academically, socially, and culturally supportive environment. aboriginalprograms.lakeheadu.ca

The Gateway program offers students the opportunity to pursue university studies while providing enriched supports and programming. Gateway is geared towards students who successfully meet their academic program course prerequisites, but whose academic average does not represent their academic potential. No application is necessary; students will automatically be considered for admission under Gateway as part of the regular admission assessment process.

Native Access Program (NAP)

Academic English Program (AEP)

The Native Access program is a nine-month full-time preparatory program designed to provide you with the skills and academic preparation necessary for the successful completion of a university degree. You will study in a culturally sensitive and friendly environment while you take courses in subject areas such as English, Math, Science, Indigenous Learning, and University Transitions. Upon successful completion of the Native Access Program, you may choose to pursue an undergraduate degree at Lakehead University.

No Application, Automatically Considered

For more information, contact: (807) 346-7709, nap@lakeheadu.ca

Native Nurses Entry Program (NNEP) The Native Nurses Entry Program is a nine-month preparation program designed to increase opportunities for Aboriginal people to gain access to, and be successful in, the Lakehead University four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (for NNEP students with a minimum 70% average) or the three-year compressed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (for NNEP students with a minimum 80% average). The program consists of two semesters (twelve weeks each) as well as a two-week field placement. Upon successful completion of the NNEP, the student is then promoted to the first year of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Lakehead University.

Lakehead University’s Academic English Program (AEP) is an intensive English language program designed to improve international students’ English language proficiency. Through a combination of academic English, cultural, and social activities, students will be immersed in practicing the English language in real life situations. International students who successfully meet our academic requirements but are below our English language proficiency requirements are encouraged to consider the AEP. Students who fall into this category are encouraged to apply for their Lakehead University program of choice, and once all documents are received, students will automatically be considered for admission through the AEP. The AEP has five levels. Students will be placed in a level based on placement test results taken prior to the start of the program. Upon successful completion of Level 5, students will move into their academic program of study. For more information, visit international.lakeheadu.ca
