If your first language is not English, and you cannot verify having recently studied in an English language school system for a certain length of time, you will be required to present proof of English language proficiency. Lakehead University accepts the following recognized tests as proof of English language proficiency. ALL ABOUT TRANSFERRING It is easy to transfer to Lakehead. Our pathway agreements and general transfer policies are designed to help you maximize your credits from your current or previous studies at either college or university – or even both!

GENERAL TRANSFER REQUIREMENTS For College And/Or University Students & Graduates If a transfer pathway does not exist for a program, college students (or graduates) will be assessed for transfer credits automatically. University students (or graduates) are assessed for transfer credits upon receipt of course syllabi.
MULTILATERAL PATHWAY For College Graduates Multilateral pathways are for college graduates from ANY accredited Ontario college. Graduates can enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study from a specific college program regardless of which Ontario college they attended.
BILATERAL PATHWAY For College Graduates This is an agreement between Lakehead University and a particular accredited college that allows college graduates of a specific program to enter directly into a specific Lakehead program in the first, second, or third year of study.
TYPES OF TRANSFER CREDIT The type of transfer credit you may receive depends on whether you enter into Lakehead through a bilateral or multilateral pathway, or by satisfying our general transfer requirements. In some cases, you may enter directly into Year 2 or 3 of the program. In other cases, you may receive either direct equivalency or unspecified equivalency credits.
DIRECT EQUIVALENCY A direct equivalency would mean that you received transfer credit for a specific course offered by Lakehead (e.g. Psychology 1100 - Introductory Psychology).
UNSPECIFIED EQUIVALENCY ENGINEERING POST-DIPLOMA COLLEGE TRANSFER PROGRAMS Direct Entry for Engineering Technologist Graduates The Faculty of Engineering at Lakehead-Thunder Bay offers five post-diploma engineering degree programs enabling qualified Engineering Technologist Graduates to earn a BEng degree in a minimum of a Summer + two regular academic years. See pages 20-21 for details.
If the coursework you have completed does not quite match any Lakehead courses, you may receive an unspecified transfer credit in a specific subject (e.g. Psychology 1_00 – First Year Unspecified Psychology Full Credit). As most programs have electives, you can use these unspecified transfer credits to fulfill those elective requirements.

UNIVERSITY LINGO EXPLAINED What is a(n)...?
Below are some common terms used that will be helpful as you explore program options.
If you have multiple interests and want to keep options open, you can consider a:
Undergraduate Degree - It is the first university credential you will be awarded upon graduation.
Minor - An optional collection of courses from a particular area of study that is different from your program and/or major.
Honours - A 4-year undergraduate degree with specialized and/or intensive courses at the 4th year level. Completion of a thesis or research-focused courses is normally a requirement of an Honours program.
Specialization - A defined collection of courses taken from a particular or variety of disciplines that complements the major.
Bachelors - A 3- or 4-year undergraduate degree that consists of a minimum of 15 or 20 full course equivalents, respectively.
Certificate - A professional or an applied focus that provides learning outcomes that are distinct from your program. Explore certificates in Geomatics, Business Information Technology, Public History, Environmental Sustainability, and more, including:
Major - A program involving one primary focus of study (e.g. English or Biology). Double Major - A program involving two focuses of study (e.g. History & Political Science). Concentration - A defined collection of courses that is embedded into, and complements, an Honours or Bachelor’s 4-year Program.
Entrepreneurship Certificate
Double Degree - Two undergraduate degrees from two different degree types that are completed at the same time and meet all the requirements for both degrees (e.g. Outdoor Recreation & Geography). Credit - The measurement unit for a course that indicates its relative weight within a program.
This program is open to non-business students enrolled in any degree program at Lakehead, and features a series of courses designed to improve the competence of individuals in setting up and running their own business. French Proficiency Certificate
A full-time undergraduate student in the Fall-Winter Term is one who is registered in more than three and one-half full course equivalents (i.e., someone who is registered in more than 3.5 FCEs). The normal course load is five full course equivalents (or higher). (Please refer to the specific program requirements in this Calendar.)
The Department of Languages offers a Certificate in French Proficiency at three levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced for students wishing to learn or be recognized for their French proficiency who are not taking a French Major or Minor.
A part-time undergraduate student in the Fall-Winter Term is one who is registered in three and one-half full course equivalents or fewer (i.e., someone who is registered in 3.5 FCEs or less).
Depending on your program of study, you may be able to pursue majors, double majors, minors, concentrations and more allowing you to further enhance your degree and customize it based on your interests and future career path.

Major You can graduate after 4 years and upon successful completion of the program requirements. For example, if you choose to study Political Science, you will graduate after 4 years with a degree with a major in Political Science.

Double Major This is a three or four-year program involving two closely related disciplines. You will take enough courses to fulfill requirements to receive both Majors listed on your degree upon graduation.

While you take courses within a main area of study (your major) you will also take a pre-defined selection of courses that complement your major. For example, you can earn a concentration in Gender and Women’s Studies while you complete your Social Work degree.
Certificate A professional or applied focus that provides learning outcomes that are distinct from your program. A complete list of Certificate Programs can be found within Lakehead University’s Academic Calendar.

Major/Minor While your main area of study is your major, you may choose to focus on another area of interest. A minor is an optional collection of courses from an area of study that differs from your major or program. For example, you may major in Criminology, but take enough elective courses in Psychology to declare a minor.
Double Degree You will graduate and receive two undergraduate degrees from two different areas of study. Courses are completed at the same time, and in conjunction, and you will meet requirements for both degree programs. For example, while studying Outdoor Recreation, you can take the required courses to graduate with both an Outdoor Recreation and Gender and Women’s Studies Degree.
Concurrent Education While you take courses in your Major and Minor areas of study, you will also be taking Teacher Education courses and completing student teaching placements at the same time. Additionally, you will have two “professional years” after you complete your Undergraduate degree that focus specifically on Teacher Education and feature over 100 days of Student Teaching. 11
TRANSFERRING FROM ANOTHER UNIVERSITY
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
WHAT IS AN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT?
As a university transfer student, you are eligible for admission if you have:

Attended a university where you completed coursework (i.e. you have received grades);
• Mailed to Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions directly from the institution,
Completed (or are completing) the prerequisite courses for your program of choice at the high school, college, or university level; and
• Sent electronically to Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions using the OUAC’s transcript service, or
Achieved a minimum overall average of 60% based on your university studies.
• Delivered by the applicant to Enrolment Services - Undergraduate Admissions in an envelope sealed by the institution.
HOW DOES TRANSFER CREDIT WORK? For university students (or graduates), Lakehead will consider you for transfer credit as part of your application. However, you are required to submit course syllabi, not course descriptions, for every course with a final grade of at least 60%. We will not transfer courses with grades under 60%. The amount of transfer credit that you will receive depends on a number of factors, including: final grades, course content, credit hours, as well as the program applied to at Lakehead University.
WHAT IS A COURSE SYLLABI? In order to be considered for a transfer credit evaluation, you are required to submit course syllabi from your previous and/or present post-secondary institutions (college/university). Do not submit course descriptions. The following information must be included:

HOW DOES TRANSFER CREDIT WORK? FOR COLLEGE GRADUATES WITH A DIPLOMA*: Three-Year Diploma*: For a three-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 7.5 full course equivalents may be awarded. In exceptional cases, an additional 2 full course equivalents may be awarded. Two-Year Diploma*: For a two-year diploma, with a 70% or better cumulative average, or a 70% average in the last year of the program, up to 5 full course equivalents may be awarded. One-Year Certificate (excluding upgrading programs): For a one-year certificate, with a 70% or better cumulative average, up to 2 full course equivalents may be awarded.

FOR BOTH COLLEGE GRADUATES AND COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO PARTIALLY COMPLETED A DIPLOMA: A minimum grade of 70% must be achieved in diploma courses in order for transfer credit to be considered. Transfer credit is granted according to appropriateness of the college program, admission requirements, and academic achievement in relevant courses. Specific courses for transfer credit will be determined on an individual basis. For some programs, the transfer credits may be unspecified credits that can be used towards fulfilling elective requirements. The amount of transfer credit received depends on a number of factors, including: final grades, course content, credit hours, as well as the program applied to at Lakehead University. Lastly, you must satisfy your program’s residency requirement. In most cases, you have to complete at least the last year of your degree at Lakehead. 13

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION & COMMERCE Q&A CAN I COMPLETE THE PROGRAM PART-TIME? Answer: Yes, students can choose to enrol in a part-time course load but course registration may be restricted due to prerequisites. We recommend you consult with a faculty advisor prior to application for guidance.
CAN I COMPLETE THE PROGRAM ONLINE? Answer: Although the program is not offered fully online, students can choose to register for online course options to supplement in-person course delivery. A faculty advisor can assist you in course advising.
IS CO-OP PLACEMENT REQUIRED? Answer: No, co-op is not mandatory. We do offer co-op as an option for all our Honours Bachelor of Commerce programs for those interested in an additional placement in their field.
WHAT IS THE SPRING/SUMMER BRIDGING PROGRAM? Answer: Applicants with a two-year Ontario college Business diploma and a 75% average, may, following an individual assessment, be eligible to complete the HBComm (Business Administration major) in 24 months. Answer: Depending on the college courses that you have completed, you may be required to complete makeup courses. Some makeup courses must be completed prior to the start of the program, while others can be completed as part of the program. Students are highly encouraged to complete any makeup courses prior to the start of the program. If you are unable to complete them prior, this may elongate your program. You may also consider taking them through other Ontario universities. A faculty advisor can assist you in course advising.
Launch Your Future Career Forward A Lakehead business degree will help you fast track attaining a professional designation that will allow you to enter specific careers that require a certain set of skills and expertise. Here are a few examples: Accredited by the Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) of Ontario, Accounting majors graduate with all of the requirements of the CPA Prerequisite Education Program (PREP). After graduation, complete the Graduate Diploma in Accounting to earn advanced standing in the Professional Education Program (PEP). Lakehead’s courses have been approved by the Human Resources Professionals Association for use toward one of the Certified Human Resources designations (CHRP, CHRL, CHRE). ENGINEERING Q&A HOW LONG ARE THE POST-DIPLOMA ENGINEERING DEGREE PROGRAMS? Answer: Each program is a minimum of two academic years (September to April) in length following a series of transition courses taken during the summer prior to the start of the first full academic year of study. You will join Lakehead’s graduate Engineering Technologists in the 3rd year of the 4-year degree program. DIPLOMA + 2 YEARS* = ENGINEERING DEGREE * Plus make up courses, where applicable. The make up courses can normally be integrated into the regular program of study. On advice from their Engineering Department Chair, some students take courses such as Complementary Studies in the next Spring/Summer session to accommodate make up courses during the regular academic year.
WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY? WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO SUBMIT? Answer: Official transcripts are requested through OUAC. If you are currently enrolled in the final year of your technology program, please send updated transcripts showing your fall term (second-last term) marks and winter term (final term) course registration as soon as possible. Applicants will be notified if additional documents are required.
WHAT WILL IT COST - TUITION, BOOKS, ACCOMMODATIONS, ETC? Answer: Current academic year tuition and fees can be found at lakeheadu.ca/ current-student/tuition-fees. Based on the 2020-2021 fees for Canadian/Permanent residents: Fall/Winter tuition and fees cost approximately $9,000, and tuition and fees for the Summer Transition program is approximately $5,000. Approximately $2,500 is needed for books/supplies. Accommodation costs vary depending on your choice. Oncampus residence accommodation from July - April, including the Summer Transition and the regular Fall & Winter academic year, is available.
WHAT IF MY ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM IS IN A DIFFERENT AREA OF SPECIALIZATION THAN THE FIVE DISCIPLINES YOU OFFER? Answer: Since most engineering technology specialties are very similar to one of our five programs, we are normally able to admit students from most technology programs. The applicant’s transcripts and the college calendars are examined to determine if core courses are missing in the applicant’s technology program. If core courses are missing, you will be asked to take “make up” courses from the first and second year of our engineering programs. It is essential that students have the background in the core courses of the program in order to have the knowledge necessary to succeed at the engineering degree level.
MY DIPLOMA FINISHES IN THE SUMMER. CAN I STILL START IN THE FALL WITHOUT SUMMER TRANSITION? Answer: Typically, all college transfer students are required to complete our Summer Transition. Please contact our Faculty of Engineering directly for review.
WHAT COURSES WILL I TAKE DURING THE SUMMER TRANSITION? Answer: You will be required to take a series of transition courses during the months of July and August. Lectures typically begin the day following Canada Day (July 1). All students are required to take two engineering mathematics courses; Engineering 3021 ‘Analysis A’ in July and Engineering 3022 ‘Analysis B’ in August. Students are also required to take two engineering/science courses concurrently with these courses. Stewardship allows for the sustainable extraction and utilization of products such as wood, biofuels, bioproducts, food, and natural medicines. Most forested landscapes in Ontario and Canada are publicly owned, and as such, are also important for recreational pursuits. Lakehead’s programs will prepare you to take an active and responsible role in the stewardship and future sustainability of Canada’s most important resources.
Common First Two Years Whether you are interested in the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management (HBEM) or the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry (HBScF), you will follow a common curriculum for the first two years of your program. After the second year, you select one of six specializations for your program. Acquiring a broad understanding of the topics and issues surrounding natural resources management will enable you to better understand and pursue your areas of interest and ensure the best career path possible.

It includes the conservation of wildlife, clean water, scenic aesthetics, respect for First Nations people, and the continued best practices in resource development and extraction.
Lakehead University welcomes qualified college graduates from across Canada. The following list represents select college programs deemed ideal for this transfer opportunity; however, other two- or three year related programs will be evaluated on an individual basis for transferability options.

ARE THE PROGRAMS ACCREDITED? Answer: The Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry programs (non-co-op and co-op) are nationally accredited by the Canadian Forestry Accreditation Board. This signifies that graduates of these programs meet the academic requirements for membership in provincial professional forest associations in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Graduates are qualified for active membership in the Canadian Institute of Forestry, a national association of scientists and practitioners in the fields of renewable resources management and research. In addition, all graduates of our Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry are eligible to apply to the Ontario Professional Foresters Association (O.P.F.A.) to become a Registered Professional Forester (R.P.F.).
WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS? Answer: Applicants who have completed a two-year Natural Resources or Forestry Technician or Technology Diploma program (or another allied program) with a minimum 70% (GPA = 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, B Grade) in the final year of their program are eligible for admission consideration to year 3 of either the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry (HBScF) program, co-op or non co-op, or the Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management (HBEM) program, co-op or non co-op. Applicants with two or more years of relevant career experience acquired after the completion of a diploma with a minimum 65% (GPA = 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale, C+ Grade) in the final year of their program are eligible for admission consideration.

Res. Science B - Soils, Water & Chemistry, and Modelling & Ecology • NRMT-2712-AA - Nat. Res. Science C - Tree Development, and Forest Economics Some will need to switch into NRMT-2713-AA at a later date but that will be determined once the Program Chairs review your college transcripts. Mandatory Field School immediately follows Transition School.
WHAT ARE SOME CAREER OPPORTUNITIES? Career opportunities include: forestry consultants, environmental assessment, and ecosystem rehabilitation, water and soil testing facilities, forest-based industries, environmental consulting firms, conservation authorities, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, Department of Fisheries and Oceans.
WHAT’S MANDATORY FIELD SCHOOL? Answer: Field school is an opportunity for students of all years to hone their skills with team-based learning at a variety of off-campus facilities. Students visit natural environments and professional networks in local, regional, and international settings.

TRANSFER CREDIT Results of the transfer credit assessment can be found on the Applicant page of myInfo by clicking on View My Transfer Credit. The amount of transfer credit received depends on a number of factors including grades, previous course work and the program applied to at Lakehead University.

INDIGENOUS STUDENTS SUPPORT SERVICES FOR INDIGENOUS STUDENTS Gakina Nindinawemaaganag Student Lounge is available at the Thunder Bay Campus. It provides an open and comfortable environment where you can access a study area, kitchenette, and computer stations. There is also a cultural room for individual or group sessions with Elders-in-Residence Program. The lounge is a home away from home and a place to create community where you can interact with classmates and make new friends.

The Maawnjigamig Academic Support Zone is available on the Orillia campus in the Residence Building. This is a welcoming space with comfortable furniture, a small kitchenette, and is a great place to meet with friends or to study. Students can meet with Elders in the Wellness Centre or in the Wiigwasitig Gitigaan “Birch Tree Garden”. Additionally, the Alumni Commons and the New Sun Indigenous Art Gallery in Simcoe Hall is a great spot to meet up with friends or for quiet study. The commons has plenty of comfortable furniture for students to relax and is also used for smudging and small gatherings.

The Lakehead Makes Leaders Completion Certificate
is a five-level, value-added program that helps you build soft skills such as communication, team building, interpersonal skills, growth potential, and more!
