Engineering

We believe engineering is for everyone - including you.

Lakehead Engineering offers high-quality professional engineering education that’s open to everyone.

Lakehead Engineering is the only place in Canada where you will gain an Engineering Technology Diploma in just two years, and then in just two more years you’ll get your Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree. In only four years you will graduate with both a diploma and a professional degree. In addition to your diploma and degree, Lakehead Engineering allows you the option to get an MBA at the same time and to undertake a co-op placement for up to 16 months. Even if you don’t have all the pre-requisite qualifications, you still have a home at Lakehead Engineering with our one-year Pre-Eng program after which you can enter one of our BEng + Diploma programs.

Joe Saliba

BEng (Electrical) ‘06 Founder, JHS Consulting “Lakehead’s hands-on and student focused approach to education gave me a head start when beginning my career, allowing me to fast track the founding of my own Engineering Consulting firm in Vancouver.”

BEng + MBA

Lakehead Engineering is the only place in Canada where you can get your MBA (Master of Business Administration) at the same time as your BEng. You’ll have the opportunity to gain advanced skills in management, finance, and marketing alongside your engineering education. You’ll start your MBA in the upper years of your engineering program, and then stay for just one more academic year. You’ll then graduate with an Engineering Technology Diploma, a Professional Engineering Degree and an MBA. Whether you’re looking for a top graduate job or want to create your own start up – with a diploma, a degree, and an MBA in your pocket you’ll kickstart your career and stand out from the rest.

BEng + Co-op

Lakehead Engineering offers Co-op as an option with every engineering degree. This gives you the chance to undertake a paid work placement for 4-16 months as an integrated part of your education. Co-op gives you the chance to start your career before you graduate and to earn while you learn. You can work for top employers near our campuses in Thunder Bay and Barrie, and all over North America. We also partner with NGOs, non-profits, and public sector organisations to offer you a wide range of different placements.

All Bachelor of Engineering degree programs offered at Lakehead University are accredited by

The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB).

ENGINEERING Q&A

HOW LONG ARE THE POST-DIPLOMA ENGINEERING DEGREE PROGRAMS?

Answer: Each program is a minimum of two academic years (September to April) in length following a series of transition courses taken during the summer prior to the start of the first full academic year of study. You will join Lakehead’s graduate Engineering Technologists in the 3rd year of the 4-year degree program.

DIPLOMA + 2 YEARS* = ENGINEERING DEGREE

* Plus make up courses, where applicable. The make up courses can normally be integrated into the regular program of study. On advice from their Engineering Department Chair, some students take courses such as Complementary Studies in the next Spring/Summer session to accommodate make up courses during the regular academic year.

WHAT ARE THE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY?

Answer: Applicants must have a diploma in engineering technology from a community college, or the equivalent, with an average* of at least 70% (GPA = 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale, B Grade) in the final year of their program to be eligible for admission consideration.

OR

Work experience makes a difference. Applicants must have two or more years of relevant industrial experience acquired after the completion of a diploma in engineering technology from a community college or the equivalent, with an average* of at least 65% (GPA = 2.5 on a 4.0 point scale, C+ Grade) in the final year of their program to be eligible for admission consideration.

*This average is based on the marks/grade received by the applicant on their first attempt in the required courses of the final year of their technology program.

WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED TO SUBMIT?

Answer: Official transcripts are requested through OUAC. If you are currently enrolled in the final year of your technology program, please send updated transcripts showing your fall term (second-last term) marks and winter term (final term) course registration as soon as possible. Applicants will be notified if additional documents are required. Please check your email and MyInfo accounts for updates.

WHAT WILL IT COST - TUITION, BOOKS, ACCOMMODATIONS, ETC?

Answer: Current academic year tuition and fees can be found at lakeheadu.ca/ current-student/tuition-fees. Based on the 2020-2021 fees for Canadian/Permanent residents: Fall/Winter tuition and fees cost approximately $9,000, and tuition and fees for the Summer Transition program is approximately $5,000. Approximately $2,500 is needed for books/supplies. Accommodation costs vary depending on your choice. Oncampus residence accommodation from July - April, including the Summer Transition and the regular Fall & Winter academic year, is available.

WHAT IS THE ADMISSIONS TIMELINE?

Answer: Applications are processed on a rolling basis. Your application can be assessed once your transcripts and other required documentation is received. Check your myInfo portal and your Lakehead University email account frequently for updates.

WHAT IF MY ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM IS IN A DIFFERENT AREA OF SPECIALIZATION THAN THE FIVE DISCIPLINES YOU OFFER?

Answer: Since most engineering technology specialties are very similar to one of our five programs, we are normally able to admit students from most technology programs. The applicant’s transcripts and the college calendars are examined to determine if core courses are missing in the applicant’s technology program. If core courses are missing, you will be asked to take “make up” courses from the first and second year of our engineering programs. It is essential that students have the background in the core courses of the program in order to have the knowledge necessary to succeed at the engineering degree level.

MY DIPLOMA FINISHES IN THE SUMMER. CAN I STILL START IN THE FALL WITHOUT SUMMER TRANSITION?

Answer: Typically, all college transfer students are required to complete our Summer Transition. Please contact our Faculty of Engineering directly for review.

WHAT COURSES WILL I TAKE DURING THE SUMMER TRANSITION?

Answer: You will be required to take a series of transition courses during the months of July and August. Lectures typically begin the day following Canada Day (July 1). All students are required to take two engineering mathematics courses; Engineering 3021 ‘Analysis A’ in July and Engineering 3022 ‘Analysis B’ in August. Students are also required to take two engineering/science courses concurrently with these courses.
