Get thee out of doors! have a proclivity towards the great outdoors. We love to boat, bike, hike, fish and otherwise relax lakeside the whole summer long… in theory (ahem). Yes, no matter how much we vow during those dreary winter months to soak in every last second of summertime, it’s sometimes just simpler to plop down on the sofa for some TV therapy. Instead of marveling at a Travel Channel destination, why not get out there and enjoy the Midwest’s destination-worthy offerings this time of year? The athletically inclined should – and many do – flock to the lake scene this season to partake in some of the best water sports in the world. For inspiration, turn to p. XX and meet Kirby Liesmann, poised to take the world by storm with his breath-defying wakeboarding

skills. Never heard of wakeboarding? Prepare to be wowed, and for the term “wakeboarding” to become household – especially at the lake! Aquaphiliacs of the Midwest are also blessed by the widespread waterways that connect our area’s many lakes. What better way to discover such secret passageways than by way of the paddle – on a kayak or canoe (p. XX)? Regardless of your sporting status, there is truly nothing like sprawling out beneath a cerulean sky on a ____ ______, feeling the still-cool breeze wisp lightly across our (appropriately protected, of course – p. XX) skin. Here we are, in the midst of perhaps the most glorious, outwardly inviting time of the year. We therefore implore: Don’t give in, get out!

Professional athletes already know the secret of the latest trend in backyard fun – a personal putting greeen. Alicia B. McGarry

june/july 2009

In 2007, George Brett

was enjoying his well-deserved retirement, playing a round at Augusta National when he visited the Sports Illustrated home nearby. It was there that Brett first set eyes – and foot – on a personal putting green. Immediately enthralled by the concept, he saw the potential in introducing this personalized take on the sport to an already golf-crazed Midwest. Later, while visiting fellow Hall fo Famer Robin Yount’s home in Scottsdale and playing on his personal green, Brett became determined to see to it that this match made in heaven was one that Midwesterners could enjoy, too. Brett was visiting Yount with Jason Cupp, CEO of design-build landscape firm Highland Outdoor. Already possessing the extraordinary skillmanship required to run a successful, top-tier firm like Highland Outdoor, George knew Jason could play an integral role in bringing personal putting greens to this market. “He came to me and asked if it was something we would be interested in adding to our business model,” says Cupp, who started Highland Outdoor 22 years ago after mowing lawns as a kid before moving on to small landscaping projects. Today, Highland has emerged as an industry leader for highend outdoor projects. “We realized it would make for a great add-on to all that our company already offers,” Cupp says. “After all, we’ve done everything possible on the outside four walls of a house.” And so, Highland Outdoor acquired a new subsidiary: Southwest Greens of Kansas City. As most golfers on the coasts have

www.lakehomesmag.com

already realized, the backyard puttinggreen trend is taking hold, fast – and for good reason. As has gone the general diversion trend in which pleasure seekers are investing more time and money into creating their own, personal entertainment oasis at home, golf, too, is coming home. “Avid golfers with all different degrees of golf proficiency are installing backyard putting greens – it’s not just for the golfer that as handicap of 2,” Cupp says. “Really, a personal green is right for anyone that wants to make a difference in their short game. “It chips, it putts… the ball bounces – there really is no difference.” However, one initial barrier for prospective personal putting green owners is the fear that their source of putting pleasure will also be high maintenance. Not so – unlike a natural putting green, synthetic grass is truly maintenance free, and certainly free of the types of chemicals real grass requires to look green. “There is virtually no maintenance associated with a synthetic green. With a natural green, there is regular maintenance that must be maintained once or twice daily,” Cupp says. Today, there are a few others in the Midwest market installing backyard putting greens, but Cupp says there are a few key facets that set Southwest Greens of Kansas City a cut above the rest. “Southwest Greens of Kansas City can actually set the stimpmeter reading, which is something not offered by anyone else in the market today,” Cupp says. Should a Southwest Greens of Kansas City client ever wish to alter

their personal putting green’s stimpmeter reading, this can be accomplished with maintenance-level changes, and not any kind of major construction. “We can unlock it, change the speed and recalibrate it to their needs,” Cupp explains. Another element that sets Southwest Greens apart from others is their use of real sand as golf courses do, rather than the rubber material that many companies are using. “Quite simply, this rubber infill is an inferior product,” Cupp says. Because each green is completely custom-built for each client, Cupp says his clients are often on the job with Cupp’s team for a great deal of the installation, involved at every at every turn, from cup location to slope and difficulty of shot. In fact, he says, George Brett was present for his own green’s installation every day for eight to 10 hours. Brett isn’t the only sports celebrity jumping on Southwest’s Greens – several well-known, currently touring professionals such as Vijay Singh, Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia and Fred Funk are also on board. Proud owners of personal putting greens get the benefit of perfecting their passion virtually any time, and without the hassle of lugging golf gear around. Play in meditative solitude – without the peanut gallery of golf buddies, with good friends while cooking out, or with the kids whose surefire passion is ever-budding and could only be made more fervent with the ability to play – sans regard for the curmudgeonly foursome following closely behind. u

Summer fashions story By

Breanne Biondo •

With summer in full swing, things are certainly steaming up outside, so we thought it only appropriate that we returned in kind, in the way we at lakehomes know best: through fabulous fashion, of course! We chose Lake Winnebago’s Arrowhead Yacht Club as our location for its classic-yet-modern air, pairing perfectly with what we’ve seen on the fashion scene this season. Getting in on the action was Von Maur, the latest luxury retailer to capture the styling eyes of the area’s most fashion-forward, providing all of the pieces you’ll see gracing the hot bods of our fabulous models. As you’ll see, this summer’s high-end

fashion has certainly trended toward the classic end of the style spectrum, from its perfectly feminine A-lines to this summer’s striking style making masculine out of subtle accent patterns like paisley, especially when partnered with denim or an uber-masculine pair of Robert Waynes. Swimming is ever-sensuous, sleek and overarchingly simple when it comes to women’s wear – show us a season when black isn’t the new… black, and we’ll promise to proclaim a new, haute national holiday! Tommy Bahama certainly has one of our best-bet votes, with its playfully posh takes on printed tees and tropical trunks. june/july 2009

Happiness is a renovated lake home infused with a bright welcoming palette of love and cheer Gloria Gale photos By Bill Mathews story By

Six summers have passed since this Leawood family purchased their second home at Lake Lotawana. “I could think of a number of reasons why we decided on this lake but mainly it was convenience,” Patti says. “In retrospect, that may have been a factor, but there was another prime motive for the purchase.” The homeowners have two sons, Ryan and Matthew, who at that time were teenagers wanting to spend time at a lake. What it finally boiled down to was simple: “We didn’t want to miss another summer with our kids. This lake house would be a memory maker,” Patti says. That realization put the wheels in motion for the family to start hunting for property. “The whole idea was to have a house that gave us a place to relax and have

fun with the boys,” Patti says. Rounding one of the lake roads during a spring outing, the family settled on a house that was unassuming from the exterior. In the family’s estimation, the multi-story house with lap siding would need a considerable amount of work. Patti and her husband Steve mulled over the situation and believed they were up to the task with the help of a couple of key people. Not wasting much time, the family bought the house and promptly moved in. “Thinking back, we admit that we were more concerned about getting out onto the water than doing much renovating. Actually, that can be summed up without hesitation; we promptly bought two Seedoos and a speedboat. It was all about lakeside living with our family rather than how much remodeling was

beautifully,” Patti says. From that point on, the impetus was there to begin the process. “At first, I was interested in the lodge-style complete with beams and lots of stone work, but Greg had other ideas,” Patti says. “He mentioned that a Cape Cod look with white woodwork would be a better complement for this house. That style captured Anna Marie’s attention as much as it did mine.” Anna Marie rolled up her sleeves realizing the task ahead. “I do a fair amount of work on the East Coast – something Patti immediately grasped referring to the fact that

she didn’t like anything too cutesy or cluttered… my sentiment exactly,” she says. “The house was completely gutted,” Anna Marie continues. “We removed everything from electrical to plumbing, walls to windows. A porch was built, we ripped out carpeting and linoleum redesigned the kitchen with new cabinets and new appliances – there wasn’t anything left from the old house, essentially this was an extensive, total remodel lasting six months.” The idea, according to Patti, was simple. “I wanted a bright palette that would

in order that first summer,” Patti says. Truth be told, however, there was little doubt that the house would need a total rehab. “It was dark, the views were compromised and there’s wasn’t a porch among other things,” she says. “It was suggested we speak with builder, Greg Smetanka who lives at the Lake and was quite familiar with renovating lake homes. In addition, we were referred to interior designer, Anna Marie DeMayo.” The trio; builder, designer and homeowner connected instantly. “There was mutual respect; that in itself was wonderful since everyone got along

render a happy, engaging house,” she says. “Since it was never intended to be a place where we would do any work… it would be a place to relax.” Looking at the final, refreshed version, everything in the house has been carefully crafted into a tableau of curiously fun paraphernalia. Walls are painted a sunny yellow, the perfect backdrop for fabrics chosen for their cheerful charm like crisp blue checks, stylish cherry reds and sharp black stripes. The appeal of each room is in the details … from the cheerleading megaphone emblazoned with PATTI down the front to butterfly nets, old buoys and bamboo creels topped with camp-blanket motifs. Realizing that, Anna Marie scoured

www.lakehomesmag.com

flea markets and estate sales, anywhere she could lay her hands on vintage items, some reminiscent of lakeside living, some as eclectic as old-fashioned bathing suits framed in shadow boxes. “My objective was to fill the house with visual interest,” Anna Marie says. “If an object was memorable, had a sense of humor or was a perfect fit, I would buy it. Patti trusted me enough to make a judgment, and 99 percent of the time she would love it.” For example, Anna Marie decided that after Patti told her that any fabric chosen would have to suffer through the possibility of having Picante sauce spilled on it, Anna Marie chose a black and white striped Sunbrella fabric for

the living room sofa that would stand up to the test. “I had also collected pennants from my travels, came down the stairs one day and announced that I had found a place for them…I would make a montage and create a throw for the back of the sofa,” Anna Marie says. “The way I visualize a room is to infuse it with lots of pattern and texture,” she continues. “Thus, throughout the home, you’ll find velvet next to Pendleton wool, a sturdy canvas covering alongside a brightly-painted wood piece. When there’s a chance to make a statement, I’ll always pop for the impact and go big and interesting, not small and ditzy.” In the meantime, during renovation, a porch had been added. The space would be a focal point, and thus complement – not overtake – the already colorful adjacent family room. “This is an area where we spend a lot of time and had to be attractive with an overriding sense of comfort. It’s turned out to be just that… a perfect place to watch the boats float and spend a lazy Sunday morning,” Patti says. And that’s what Patti, her husband, two boys and even Izzy and Cooper – the family’s two dogs – have come to enjoy. “We really like to entertain. That’s really the best part of having this home,” she says. “It’s easy, it’s fun and the whole family including the boys and their friends can feel at home here. We plan on keeping this house for a very long time.” u

A paddle sports primer

With its ubiquitous – and picturesque – waterways, the Midwest is a paddler’s paradise Breanne Biondo

june/july 2009

Whether a whitewater thrillseeker or the kind of paddler that prefers a lackadaisical glide down a lazy river so as to take in the splendid scenery unfolding at every turn, the Midwest paddle scene is sure to deliver. For those who have yet to be initiated into the world of paddle sports, the realm may seem arcane and the learning curve steep. Not so, insists the ever-growing number of paddle fanatics – all that you really must decide is which kind of paddle craft is right for you, especially in terms of size and construction materials. After that, the world of water is yours to paddle. “We put kids starting at age 5, and the oldest person we’ve sold a boat to is 85,” says Lynn Lyon, owner of KC Paddler, which just opened a new location in Lawrence. “There are so many places to paddle in the area, from the biggest rivers down to the littlest

www.lakehomesmag.com

streams in Missouri’s and Kansas’ conservation areas.” The best way to determine which craft will best suit your needs is to consider what you hope to garner from your paddling adventures – for pure, perfect recreation or serious sport, and whether you intend to mostly paddle alone, with a partner or with an all-out party! Not only will these help you decide which type of craft is best for you, it will also narrow down options for transportability and construction materials. Of course, there’s much more to paddle craft than just size and construction materials, and just as is the case with any hobby or diversion, the more you fall in love, the deeper you’ll want to delve, learning more about variables

such as hull shape, entry line, beam, thwarts and gunwales. For those seeking a more in-depth understanding of paddle sports, Midwesterners are extraordinarily fortunate to have some of the world’s foremost experts residing right here in our own back yard. Lyon believes that, just as with almost anything else, they more you know, the more you enjoy! Because of this, at the crux of KC Paddler’s business model is education, and ensuring that each of his customers feels not only secure in their purchase, but also, in their ability to make the most of their investment. So, what kind of investment are we talking? It really depends on your intent, which Lyon says another critical piece of information when choosing a craft. Will your main purpose of paddling be for recreation or touring (for those on the more serious side of the paddle sports spectrum)?

29

Do you seek solitude? Time away from the daily grind, to contemplate and otherwise be alone with your thoughts, all while being surrounded by nature’s majesty? A kayak or solo canoe may be right for you. And because, most – if not all – of carrying your craft will be a solo venture, it’s critical to choose a material that’s lightweight and manageable by yourself, but also not too light that it gains loft. Even for such light-as-a-feather crafts, kayakers and solo canoers can add sandbag weight to the lighter side. For the very lightest construction, choose Ultra-Lite Kevlar. Fabricated of TCS plastic – another lightweight material – the Current Designs Kestrel is a prime example of a 12-foot recreational kayak. An example of a solo touring kayak, on the other hand, is the Wilderness System Tsunami, with a Polyethylene construction.

30

Two with nature?

Of course, time alone in nature is nice, but sometimes the experience is only improved upon with someone with whom to share the experience (and breathtaking views!). For such, a tandem canoe such as the Wenonah Adirondack is the one to want. Tandem canoes are obviously built for two, and while it’s possible to paddle solo in a tandem canoe, there exists a third type of canoe which goes both ways, most of which are converted with a simple switch in seat configuration. For the best of both worlds… for perhaps, those of us who sometimes seek seclusion but also enjoy the company of a significant other or the like, consider a mixed-use canoes like the SoloPlus, also made by Adirondack. Of course, while basic paddle gear will do while you’re still learning, the more you fall in love with the sport, the better and higher caliber you’ll want. For such, there also exists a

top tier, luxury line of virtually every piece of paddle accoutrement. Lyon says that the luxury lies mostly in the caliber of paddle used. Paddles can range in price of $50 for a most rudimentary, utilitarian model to upwards of $400 for the fanciest. Carbon fiber paddles are the most expensive, and some of the best are made by Epic and Werner. Yet, whether planning to hit the water in style or just… hit the water, the focus for every paddle sportsman, woman and child is fun. In fact, Lyon concedes that his two, successful retail installments of KC Paddler are but a front – his real passion is paddling, and making sure that as many people are given the opportunity to try the sport and realize about life what he has – that life is like a river. “There are really serene, peaceful stretches, there are really exhilarating and fun stretches and then there are those that are less so,” Lyon says. u

As a veteran golf writer and photographer, my blend of words and images has allowed me to live my dream. Part of that dream – like many of our readers – is to live in a lake home. And, I do just that. My love for lake living is a close second to my passion for the game of golf. Enough about me. For my first column, it seems germane to talk about learning the game.

First, I’d like to express my gratitude to Lakehomes magazine for asking me to write a golf column for the publication. Golf is a big part of many lake communities, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge of the game with you. Over the past 16 years I have written about and photographed many local and national sporting events. Hundreds of my articles and photographs have been published. I’ve been credentialed both as a writer and photographer covering the PGA Tour, Major League Baseball, the National Football League and NCAA basket-

Building your swing

The importance of proper instruction cannot be understated. And conversely, even the most accomplished players in the world are continuously monitored by high-profile swing coaches. Whether a beginner or long-time player, the first step to improving your game should be a visit to a local PGA golf professional. It’s typical for golfers to spend in excess of $400 for the hottest new driver, only to find that the club alone did not improve their game. Yet they are reluctant to spend the same amount of money for professional instruction. First, one must find a golf professional who has a compatible personality. Once you have established a rapport, schedule a series of lessons. And make sure you have specific goals in mind. Typically, the golf professional will start by videotaping your swing. They will also check your equipment to make sure it fits you. This will include the loft, lie, and shaft flexibility of the clubs to ensure that you can learn game improvement strategies with your current clubs. Starting with the grip, a professional will then teach you the proper stance, posture, alignment, and other intricacies of the golf swing. You’ll learn to hit full shots from a wedge up to the driver. You’ll also learn the fundamentals of chipping and putting – critical elements of golf that will help save a significant amount of strokes during a round of golf. So what kind of investment are you looking at to build a decent golf swing? The actual cost in cold cash can be relatively inexpensive, depending on your goals and athletic ability. Lessons typically range from $45 to $95 per 45minute lesson. Like anything else, the better the

www.lakehomesmag.com

instructor, the higher the fee. You should plan on taking at least a series of five lessons. The key thing to remember is that you have to practice. It doesn’t do any good to spend your money on lessons if you aren’t willing to dedicate some time for practice. Another option might be to take group lessons. You will learn the game within a small group, and, it’s more of a social setting and can be a lot of fun. There are all sorts of choices when it comes to golf schools. Schools range from one day to one week in duration. You can expect to pay around $350 for a one-day school. Whatever path you choose to learn to play better golf, the golf professional you work with will make sure you are consistently checking the basics – your grip, posture and alignment. This will help you develop good mechanics and swing freely through the ball. Proper etiquette of the game is equally as important. Knowing how to conduct yourself on the course – no matter what level player you are, is critical to the enjoyment of all. I suggest you visit a few Web sites such as www.playgolfamerica.com or www.pga.com to learn more.

Favorite place to play

In each issue of Lakehomes magazine I will offer my “favorite places to play” course. For this issue, I would suggest you check out the newly renovated The Cove Course designed by Robert Trent Jones at Lodge of Four Seasons on beautiful Lake of the Ozarks. Formerly known as Witch’s Cove Golf Course, The Cove has undergone extensive work on the greens, tee boxes and fairways. Some of the holes have also been re-routed for optimum play. In late 2008, Golf magazine named the course one of Missouri’s “top five” courses. With the renovations, it’s likely to move up on that list. If you’re looking for 18 holes of championship golf – with a lake view – this is it. Enjoy. u

Can you please explain to me the concept of fractional ownership? I was approached with this type of a deal by an associate who I trust very much, but wanted to make sure I know what I might be getting myself into!

Fractional ownership has been widely used commercially for more than 30 years, for the ownership of big-ticket items such as business jets, where individuals or corporations are given the opportunity to match their aircraft purchases with their expected use, which can serve as an excellent way to offset costs for tax purposes, as well as reducing long-term costs. Today, this concept has expanded to include fractional ownership options of luxury yachts, exotic cars, residential cruise ships, destination clubs and more. Fractional ownership should not be confused with the other three categories of real estate partial ownership options, so, while you’re on the right track in consulting us, you will certainly want to do your homework. You will also find that some properties hold characteristics from multiple categories. All types of partial ownerships come with respective benefits, down-

36

falls, amenities and price points. There are: n Timeshares n Fractional ownership n Private residence clubs n Non-equity exclusive destination clubs Be sure you fully understand the differences and that much thought goes into which one, if any, suits your family’s goals and dreams. The idea behind fractional residences is to combine spacious and luxurious homes with five-star service and a “no-hassle” model of ownership. Each home is sold to multiple owners, who then hold a fraction of the home. Each owner then is assigned a time allotment that varies based on the size of the fraction. In fractional ownership, prices vary based on the size, amenities and location of the individual property as well as the number of fractional pieces per property, usually ranging

from four to 12. Compare this with the cost of these top-of-the-line homes if purchased outright as wholly owned vacation homes. Before you purchase, there are many facets you should be sure to understand completely, such as the specific terms for usage, guaranteed access and guest privileges. Or, if financing, what terms are being offered or will you be able to secure? Does it qualify as a deductibleinterest mortgage? What is the precise ownership structure? What evidence will be held of title? The value of fractional ownership, like so many purchases and investments, really depends on your personality and what you want to get for your money. For the right individual, this type of ownership can be a good match. On final note, please be aware of the risks in reselling fractional ownerships, as the market for this kind of interest has not yet been proven in all areas! u

Spotlight on UV protection This summer, make sure you soak in the sun safely. By Jennifer Bondurant When you make plans to head to the lake for the weekend, you want to see the yellow sun on the weather report, not gray clouds, but that sunny report should still move you to get prepared. UV protection should be a key concern for lake lovers, as one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, according to www. skincancer.org. Before you enjoy the sunshine, make sure you understand how to protect yourself and your family from damaging UV rays and you’ll keep your skin healthy and looking beautiful. Protecting your skin from UV is essential at all times to avoid skin damage and reduce your risk of cancer.

Understanding UVA and UVB

Three wavelengths compose ultraviolet radiation, but only two prompt our attention. UVA and UVB can cause skin cancer, while UVC is a short, highenergy wavelength that is filtered by the ozone, posing no skin threat. UVA and UVB play different roles when it comes to tanning, burning and photoaging, the premature aging of the skin caused by overexposure to the sun. Both UVA and UVB pose risks to your skin, but in different ways. UVA is long wavelength (320-400 nm) UV and accounts for up to 95 percent of the solar UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface. UVA rays are present during all daylight hours, year-round. Although UVA rays are less intense than UVB rays, they can be 30 to 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays, depending upon the time of the year. Furthermore, UVA radiation can penetrate glass and clouds. Thus, we are exposed to large doses of UVA throughout our lifetimes.

www.lakehomesmag.com

Responsible for skin aging, UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermal layers. In addition, recent studies strongly suggest that UVA may directly induce some skin cancers, including melanomas, and worsens UVB rays’ carcinogenic threat. Prolonged exposure of UVA cracks and shrinks skin’s collagen and elastin, two elements that are responsible for skin strength and elasticity. Responsible for sunburns, UVB rays are middle-wave solar rays (290-320 nm). They are considered the main culprit behind skin cancers, such as basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas. UVB rays cause burning, accelerates skin aging and causes skin to tan by stimulating the melanocyte cell to produce the brown pigment melanin. The intensity of UVB varies by season, location and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. between April and October. UVB rays do not penetrate glass.

39

Selecting skin care protection

40

“You may not get a sunburn, but the aging process is still moving forward,” says Barry Tomopolsky, a representative with SkinCeuticals Skincare. One of the most powerful ingredients to protect against the sun, Mexoryl has been used in Europe for more than 15 years, but has only been on the sunscreen scene in the U. S. since 2006 when it was approved by the FDA. The U. S. patent for Mexoryl, a unique organic filter that is highly protective against UVA rays, is owned by Skinceuticals’ parent company, Loreal USA. “Mexoryl is the first new ingredient for sun protection that has been approved by the FDA in nearly 20 years,” Tomopolsky says, commenting on the significance of the FDA’s green light.

Avoiding too much sun exposure is your best bet to protect your skin, but life at the lake isn’t about hiding indoors. When you are outside, make sure you’re fully covered with the right sunscreen. Before you select a sunscreen, read the label. A high SPF alone won’t fully protect your skin. Look for broad-spectrum ingredients to block out both UVA and UVB rays, and choose an SPF of 15 or higher. Sunblocks that contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide or Parsol 1789 (also called avobenzone) reflect sunlight and protect both UVA and UVB rays. If your skin is fair, you may want to choose an SPF of 30 or 50. Without the broad-spectrum coverage, your skin may be getting damaged without red flags.

Sunglasses: © istockphoto.com / Michal Rozanski; Sunscreen: Izvorinka Jankovic

Protecting the eyes Skin cancer may be the most obvious fear related to sun over-exposure, but several eye disorders should prompt you to protect your eyes as well. Prolonged exposure to the sun may result in cataracts that blur and dim vision, macular degeneration, vision loss through photokeratitis and more. Just as you need to carefully review the sunscreen you purchase, you should also select your sunglasses thoughtfully. When shopping for your latest pair of shades, look for those labeled with a UVA/UVB rating of 99 to 100 percent. UV protection is transparent, independent of lens color and color density. Darker tints do not mean more protection. To reduce glare, look for tints that reduce glare. Amber and brown tints are good choices, both reducing glare and absorbing high frequency colors. Different tints impact color, contrast and visibility in different ways. To combat the sun’s sharp glare when on your boat deck, polarized lenses provide help. Light striking the water’s surface is reflected, then becomes polarized – light waves aligned in a direction – as it matches the surface’s angle. Polarized lenses are fixed at an angle to let in vertically polarized light, thereby reducing glare. For the best eye protection, large, wrap-around frames are a smart option. Look for sleek and sporty wrap-around shades or classic “Jackie O” shapes to cover the entire eye socket. Don’t forget the kids. Children should also wear sunglasses with full UV protection. Avoid toy sunglasses that may lack UV protection; check the label before purchase.

www.lakehomesmag.com

Apply a full dose of sunscreen, often According to the FDA, an average-size adult or child needs at least one ounce of sunscreen to adequately cover the body from head to toe. Visualize a shot glass to gauge how much sunscreen you need to apply. Think ahead – sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before sun exposure to allow the product to penetrate the skin and provide maximum benefit. Even if you are using a water-resistant formula, remember that waterresistant is not waterproof. Reapply according to the directions on the label. When applying sunscreen, take care to reach these commonly forgotten spots: ears, nose, eyelids, lips, back of neck, top of feet, along the hairline. And if your hair is thinning or you are bald, apply sunscreen on your head, or even better, reach for a hat. A useful screen for anyone, a good hat will protect the head and face, so opt for a wide brim (at least four inches wide), made of tightly woven, opaque fibers. To ensure the hat is protecting you, you should not see light shining through the fabric. “The No. 1 mistake most people make with their sunscreen is not applying the right amount,” Tomopolsky says. “The SPF rating is spot-on, but only if you put on the right amount.” u

Waterworld

With giant leaps and a lot of pluck, a Missouri native is hurtling his way into the lofty ranks of professional wakeboarding By Gloria Gale Kirby Liesmann has it going on …exactly what he has going on is clear the moment you watch this 20-year-old become airborne. No, he’s not jumping out of a plane, schussing downslope or hanging ten in the curl. What he’s doing can only be explained by watching this surfer-blond natural-boy wonder lift, float then spin like a top – Liesmann is a professional wakeboarder. The sport is derived from the same daredevils who brought snowboarding and skateboarding into the mainstream, and who have transferred their gift of extreme finesse on to the water. Traveling roughly 25 miles per hour loosely toggled to a heavily weighted speed boat, the boy and the board becomes one. In tandem, passionately riding the wake with the lightness of a puppet held by a string (or in this case a rope); Kirby Liesmann has mastered the art. His expertise, honed by years of practice, has propelled him ever higher into the pro-circuit where, throughout a full summer’s worth of touring, Liesmann hopes to eventually be crowned the King of Wake.

44

“It’s a goal to be the best, and I’ll the first to tell you that I’m jumping in with both feet,” he says. The sport got its lift in the mid l980s just as Tony Hawk pushed skateboarding into the limelight. Then along came snowboarding, followed by wakeboarding – all three sports share a common thread. “First there’s the desire to go fast on a board; second, the sport has its own type of lifestyle that’s unique and finally, wakeboarding requires focused skill that can be improved through practice,” Liesmann says. Which is exactly what he’s honed, preparing from age 7 when he first went with his parents, Gary and Jane, to the Lake of the Ozarks. “I was skateboarding as a youngster then my older brother, Jeff, really got me to pay attention to this new water sport. I took to it immediately,” he says. “Since I had a gymnastics background, I just transferred those skills to wakeboarding.” Although this is Liesmann’s rookie year as a pro, he’s confident that all of his training will culminate in vaulting him ever higher into the lofty ranks of june/july 2009

the wakeboard elite rewarding its top three with a $300,000 purse. Though it looks easy, Liesmann is the first to admit that it’s anything but. “I train throughout the winter in Orlando where there’s so many lakes to practice on,” he says. “The first year I came down to Florida, I was slamming down pizza rolls and not really eating correctly. This year, I hooked up with a coach who has mentored me to eat well (my parents will be thrilled to hear this) and train on the water and in the gym consistently.” This translates into riding at least five times a week, each day, pushing himself to attempt tricks with spins called mobes. “There all sorts of different divisions in the circuit that runs from April through September that will require higher degrees of difficulty,” he says. “So you’ve got lots of tricks with weird names like Whirly Birds, Tootsie Rolls, Dum-Dums and Slim Chance. Then there are blind landings, Airs – or flying as high as possible without killing yourself. I even have a trick I call the Pete

46

Rose because it involves a gamble or a risk. What it boils down to is simple: the more difficult the trick, the higher the score which is what I’m aiming to accomplish.” All this leads to Liesmann’s goal “to spread the word about this growing sport and share the gift I’ve been given by the good Lord,” he says. “I eat, sleep and dream about the sport that I want to promote. Who knows – maybe I’ll be named the King of Wake, which is the elite pro-tournament that really is attracting people from all over the world. ” Apparently he’s in the right wake. Right now he has a number of sponsors that are lining up for Liesmann’s natural athletic ability and charisma. “Because it costs to go on the pro tour, I’m grateful for my sponsors, Skier’s Wharf Extreme at the Lake of the Ozarks, CWB Wakeboards, Xcel wetsuits, Anarchy eyewear,” he says. “There’s a lot of gas to burn and it’s tough in this economy, but with my sponsors behind me, it makes life a lot easier.”

Despite the rigorous training, it’s all pointed toward Liesmann’s main ideal of strength training, competing with the best and taking his sport to a whole new level. “I like the idea of teaching youngsters,” he says. “I want kids to learn – that’s why I give lessons and coach plus I do actual demos when I’m at the Ozarks between touring gigs.” Ryan Werner, manager of Skier’s Wharf Extreme, has known Liesmann for five years. “Kirby has constant dedication, despite all of the hype that follows the sport,” Werner says. “He’ll do very well.” These days, the amphibious Liesmann is staying upright, attempting multiple airborne revolutions from 900s to 1260s. “I’m landing all of my tricks, trying not to drink too much lake water and generally having the time of my life,” he says. In a world that constantly ebbs and flows, it looks like Liesmann has won his crown already. u june/july 2009

The Make-a-Wish Foundation By

Alicia McGarry

What if you had the chance to make manifest your most wished-for dream – would you take it? What if you had the chance to help a foundation do the same for a child, whose diagnosis and prognosis are less-than-favorable for them to find the way to realize their dreams like the rest of us? Here’s your opportunity. “The Highlight of Nate’s Life,” a Make-aWish Foundation story shared with Lakehomes by Jo Dee Berger, regional manager for fundraising and community development for the foundation... When Nate was asked what would mean more to than anything in the world, there was simply one answer: a trip to Disney World. After all, the loves of his were planes, trains, buses and Disney… and the essence of each could be captured on this one trip. Our family was flown to Disney and enjoyed so many of Nate’s favorites. Probably his biggest thrill was the surprise of meeting Barney in person. Nate had carried a Barney around under his arm since he was just a year old. Barney was Nate’s very best friend, and meeting him was a thrill. Nate’s Barney endured all of the medical procedures with Nate, and soaked up a lot of tears along the way. Nate passed away in 2007, however memories of this special time remain the happiest of Nate’s life.

www.lakehomesmag.com

From left, Wish teen Jeffry with Tab White.

The first wish Nearly 30 years ago, the Make-a-Wish Foundation granted its very first wish, to a boy with leukemia who dreamed of becoming a police officer. Through the concerted effort of many caring individuals, Chris Greicius became the first-ever honorary police officer for the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Chris never knew the impact that his dream fulfilled would have on a world full of children with life-threatening illnesses because he passed away just a few days following being sworn in. It was then that the Make-a-Wish Foundation’s amazing story began. Since then, they have granted the wishes of thousands of children who may not

otherwise have the opportunity to realize their greatest dreams. From visiting Disneyworld to meeting Michael Jordan, having dinner at a fancy restaurant in Paris or even a jungle-themed room makeover, the Make-a-Wish Foundation has granted wishes that stretch as far as a child’s imagination can reach. Jo Dee Berger, regional manager for fundraising and community development says that by and far, the most asked-for is Disneyworld, and because of this, Disneyworld has fostered a very special relationship with the Make-aWish Foundation. “There is a special resort, called Give

Kids The World, within Disney World that was designed for children with special needs and medical problems,” Jo Dee says. In 2009, Jo Dee says Kansas City’s Make-aWish Foundation hopes to grant the wishes of 75 area children – a tall order, even for the largest wish-granting organization in the world. On June 29 at the breathtaking Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City, the Make-a-Wish Foundation will host its second annual golf classic to determine who will be sent on the team representing Kansas City’s chapter of Makea-Wish to the Sponsor’s Challenge, to be held at the Lake of the Ozarks’ Porto Cima Golf Club in September. This year, in addition to the opportunity to play one of the Midwest’s most lauded courses, the golf classic will also feature Stan Thirsk, Tom Watson’s longtime mentor and coach, who plans to play a hole with each of the teams

sometime during the event. There will be hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin competitions as well as a longest drive contest. The recently renovated Blue Hills Country Club is known for its top-notch bent grass and has played host to many USGA events – in fact, it’s the only place where Tom Watson, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino played in the same group! Without the generous outpouring that comes from the foundation’s steadfast supporters, the Make-a-Wish Foundation would be wholly incapable of granting wishes for anyone. “Philanthropy is like dropping a rock in a pond,” Jo Dee says. “The ripples move infinitely to reach every part of the pond, so it goes with the generous support from our donors and volunteers – their generosity affects so many people in a positive way.” u
