American actor and avid yachtsman, Sterling Haydon once said, “Wind is to us what money is to life on shore”.
Lake Lotawana Rings in the Sailing Season with the First Annual “No Frills” Spring Regatta a welcome relief to lake lovers, boaters, and outdoor enthusiasts. The “No Frills” C-Scow Regatta that took place on Lake Lotawana the weekend of April 16 made many forget about the long, cold winter that was. Twenty two sailing teams, and some nice northeastern breezes helped make the event a resounding success. Sailors came from as far away as Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, Minnesota to participate in the two day regatta. The one-design C Scow class created by Johnson Boatworks of White Bear Lake, Minnesota began sailing in 1905. Original, the boat and masts were made of wood and the gaffe-rigged mainsails were made of cotton. Through the years, hull shapes and materials have changed, but the critical formula remains the same: One hull, one large sail,

two bilge-boards, and one helluva ride! There are 58 “C Scow” fleets that compete in inland lake racing across the U.S. Lake Lotawana has
long been recognized as one of the largest and most competitive fleets since the boat was introduced here in 1948. Unlike the Lotawana Fall Regatta, which has attracted high profile sailors such as Olympic gold medal winner Buddy Melges,
this regatta celebrated the social side of sailing as much as the competitive side. “If the Lotawana Fall Regatta is the brass ring of sailing, this weekend was more about shaking off the rust, welcoming spring, and celebrating our sport with new and old friends,” said Zach Carruthers, who crews on captain Gary Schroeder’s MO-37. The Canoe Club Restaurant served as the “unofficial” headquarters for the participants. Friday night the crowd was treated to live bluegrass from Springfield, MO’s The Hillbenders, while Saturday night the Candice Hill Steel Drum Jazz Trio took everyone on a musical journey to the Caribbean. “Our goal going into the weekend was to have fun and sail fast, fortunately we did both!”, said MO-44 skipper Jon Martin, who along with his crew, Katie Prideaux took first place in the eight race event.

Gallup Maps have dated back as early as 1875, which puts the
Gallup Map Company as one of Kansas City’s oldest.
F
Fred Gallup, the original location was at Broadway and 9th Street then moving to Baltimore and 9th, then to Walnut and 14th. Most of these moves were do to growth, having at one time as many as 100 cartographers. With one of the landmark accomplishments being that they produced the very first United States road atlas and sold it to Rand McNally in the 1930s. The Gallup Map Company is now located at Main and 17th, and owned by one Patrick Carroll. Patrick recalls when his parents purchased the Gallup Map company from it's founder's family. Tom and Pat Carroll had purchased Harris Custom Framing in 1957 and was doing a lot of framing and mounting for the Gallup Map Company. When the Gallup family placed the map company up for sale in 1968, the Carroll's bought it as a way to expand the framing company. "I was 8 at the time, and helped my Dad move the business from 14th and Walnut, to 1733 Main where it remains today" remarked Patrick. As you can imagine, road maps, rail road maps, county abstract maps, etc, of every size, shape, and format occupy the building on Main. But it was not until 2006 that Patrick came across a collection of maps that would place ounded by
Gallup Map Company "on the map". Not just as one of Kansas Cities oldest companies but as having a collection of maps labeled so rare that an antique traveling road show was stumped. This collection consists of about 125 original hand drawn, pen and ink maps on linen paper. Each map is a one of a kind manuscript. They are classified by appraisers as "super rare" because they do not exist in the auction records. They just never come up for sale. The maps have been stored, sealed in tubes for decades, some almost a century. They had not been exposed to light, sun or even air, until 2006 and some not until this year. This means that the condition of most of these are excellent. Nearly all of them are copyrighted by Gallup Map Company. They are all hand drawn, and hand labeled, without the use of lettering systems. The cartographers that drew them were true artists, and the incredible amount of skill they had is evident in each and every map. Every map is a true work of art and something to see!

Having had Museum Directors, Historical Societies, Library directors, and more review the maps, Patrick is quoted as saying, "I am glad I know CPR because I thought some of these people were going to faint or have a heart attack when they saw them". They would all love to get their hands on them and add them to their collections, with the overall consensus being that the historical value on them is priceless because they don't have these kind of records on the ownership maps. The US map and a few state maps show the roads before they were numbered. The trails like the Oregon, Santa Fe, Wonderland trails and the Lincoln Highway, Pacific Highway, Pike Peak Ocean to Ocean were designated numbers in 1926 by the federal government and became US 101 , US 40, US 50 and so on. Many of the County Ownership Maps show oil and gas leases, well sites and notes the names of the property owners on the map. When the maps were viewed at the Wyandotte County Appraisal Fair last winter Patrick was given a room all to himself. And while most people who came to get an appraisal that day had a 5 minute meeting with an expert that knew their item, Patrick was visited by every appraiser and auction company as well as all the volunteers. Each spending at least 15 to 30 minutes or longer, looking at the ten maps Patrick brought in that day. He was there for

more than four hours before he had to leave. The experts were at a loss, they had never seen anything like them and there was nothing they could compare them to for a base value. It is from the collective group of experts that Patrick has spoken with that he learned the term "super rare" and that he probably has the largest collection of vintage, hand drawn cartography maps in the United States, if not the world. One of the hand drawn maps Patrick had discovered was a Lake of the Ozarks map from about 1930. Patrick was asked to reproduce the map by a former customer and in doing so has come to realize that there are several lake enthusiast that also share a love for
Patrick probably has the largest collection of hand drawn cartography maps in the United States, if not the world history. It was the first map he chose to bring back to life because it was beautiful, it showed the entire lake and he knew lake residents were craving a map of the lake that would also be an art piece to hang in their lake home. Patrick has since produced A Map for Lake Lotawana using an old 1940 land map. He also made an old style map of Lake Viking, and is working on a map of Table Rock Lake.

“do what you love and love what you do”. Davita “Dede” Nowland’s love for old boats lead her to create Nauticals of Marblehead, Located in Marblehead, Massachutes. hey say
Scavenging for derelict wooden boats, Dede was in search of a coffee table for her waterfront abode. A lifelong sailor, Davita wanted something for her home that would remind her of the sea and connect her with the water. She envisioned a coffee table where you looked through glass at the ribs of a wooden sailboat.
“The ribs are their heart and soul, which is where I was touched with these beautiful one-of-a-kind tables.” A graduate from University of Rhode Island’s College of Resource Development, Nowland marketed boats, yacht charters and taught sailing in between yacht deliveries on the Atlantic Ocean.
Later a graduate of The Simmons College MBA program, she worked in marketing and sales. In search of fairer breezes and clearer skies, Davita created a business that incorporates her love of the ocean, woodworking, the working waterfront, wooden boats and the treasure hunter in all of us.

come summer 2010 we're all going to be eager to catch some rays. But whether you're soaking up the sun in Kansas City or at the Lake of the Ozarks, the most important decision won't be the SPF of your lotion, but which swimsuit you will be wearing? For some women shopping for a swimsuit can be a very daunting afternoon, although, what we find more alarming is wearing that suit you bought in 2003. The runways were filled with color and more color from saturated embellished tones and neons reminiscent of the 1980s to prints with pretty pastel palettes, color ran riot.

sprightly & simple bring decor in that is simplistic and fun. No need to over-think things or they tend to get stuffy. Just like the term spring cleaning— unclutter your decor. Put away some of those heavier, warmer pieces such as area rugs and heavy draperies. Place some fun, light colored table runners out on the buffet and some washed linen throw pillows throughout.

Love thy Lakes shades of green the push to go green is not just some trendy, withtime-it-will-pass-fad. It is about respect: Respect for each other, our children and all of our ancestors. We have a responsibility to our environment. The following are some tips we would like to share to help keep our playground (the lakes) clean.ď §

only rain in the drain
Never dump motor oil, chemicals, pet waste, dirty or soapy water, or anything else down the storm drain. All of these materials pollute our lakes and rivers! label it
Volunteer to label storm drains in your neighborhood to inform residents that they flow directly to our lakes and streams. look for the green
Almost all big-name cleaning brands have introduced enviromentally safe version. Buy green and use smaller amounts of cleaning solutions when you can. make a date

phosphorus option. Request a soil test to ensure the right amount is applied.
wash it on the grass
buy low
If you wash your car at home, consider washing it on the lawn. Or, if you can't use the lawn, try to direct the dirty water towards the lawn and away from the storm drain.
Choose a fertilizer with low or no phosphorus. Most lawns already contain enough phosphorus. Excess phosphorus causes algae blooms in our lakes!
sweep it
Select an organic or slowrelease fertilizer. Check the label. A slow-release fertilizer is one with at least half of the nitrogen in water insoluble form. Slow-release fertilizers provide a steady supply of plant nutrients over an extended period of time.
Fertilizer and grass clippings left on sidewalks and driveways wash into storm drains. So, save money—and our lakes and streams—by sweeping fertilizer and grass clippings back onto the lawn. hire smart
Select a lawn service that uses organic fertilizers or offers a slow-release nitrogen, low or no

make fertilizer-free zones
Keep fertilizer applications at least 20 feet away from the edge of lakes, streams, or storm drains. prompt and proper disposal
Whether in your yard or on a walk, promptly dispose of your pet's waste in the trash or down the toilet where it will be properly treated. When pet waste is left behind, it washes into storm drains and ditches. From there it heads straight to your local lakes and rivers taking harmful bacteria with it.
watch instead of feed
Watch and enjoy the ducks and geese, but avoid feeding them. Feeding ducks and geese may seem harmless, but, in fact, can be harmful to our water. Feeding waterfowl causes them to become more dependent on humans which, in turn, creates unnaturally high populations and more animal waste. This waste contains bacteria that pollutes our parks and lakes. c

hey say that to cultivate strong family ties that will last a life time; buy a lake home. The same strong ties are created amongst friends, or as we like to call them—"lake rats". Maybe it is the fact that a majority of your activities are structured around lake living such as Saturday regattas and ski club practices. You take on a whole new language, bail (to remove water from the boat) or broach (to spin out of control, either causing or nearly causing a capsize). Or just maybe, it was the understanding of the responsibility of being on the water that you not only had to your parents but your buddy's parents as well. You managed to get into a lot of trouble, but you also managed to get out of a lot of trouble, and that was our pledge to one another.ď §

Probably some of my greatest memories on the lake are from our boat parties. During summer break we would all borrow our parents’ pontoon boats and head for the middle of the lake, just in front of the dam. There was a few times that we had close to 12-13 boats all tied up. Everyone’s boat met capacity per US Coast Guard… times 2! Then, everyone would party hop from boat to boat. Each pontoon had its own theme, without even trying. Some boats were more laid back and everyone was chillin. Other boats had upbeat music and the thing was swaying back and forth from all the dancing. Then you could come upon a boat that had nobody in it, everyone was swimming and partying in the water. I remember a few times bringing the boat back home and I didn't need any lights, the sun was peeking over the damn. The table was draped with a caspian blue and white table runner from Ralph Lauren Fabrics, capiz shell scalloped place mats, hand crafted and hand painted cobalt blue dinner plates, a small plate from the French collection of Gien, and irregular salad bowls from the Sophia Conran for Portmeirion collection.
Of course the goal at hand was to portray the luxurious, yet relaxed atmosphere of lake living. Which made the La Plage collection by Ralph Lauren Home the perfect inspiration with its “artful mix of chic and rustic elements and endless nautical shades of blue and white”. Pamela Ely, who had just returned from Connecticut to fill the roll of interior designer for Hudson & Jane had her work cut out for her, but welcomed the opportunity having just relocated to one of Kansas City’s area lakes herself. Yes, Pamela shares our love for life on the water. A graduate from KU and receiving her certificate from the New York School of Interior Design, Pamela comes accredited with 25 years of experience while she has found herself scattered from San Mateo, California to East Hampton, New York. Once the inspiration was found Pamela went to work to pull it all together. Starting with a grand French-Walnut table measuring 110” purchased from a small picturesque boutique in Lyon, France. A Swedish three door painted armoire found on a summer jaunt to Paris. Vintage plantation doors, and a wood paneled back drop with a wash both gray and dreamy hand-rubbed into the wood grain. The setting was a true breath of “sea” air. And Pamela with Hudson & Jane made the transformation so easy with her knowledge and worldly access to some of the finest pieces. Pamela was quoted to say, “We work with every client individually, creating a signature style they can call their own—that is Hudson & Jane”. c Our dinner guests were treated to a Hudson & Jane monogramed boat tote and lakehomes&lifestyle monogramed beach blankets. 48

(CAA) is the national trade organization of cigar manufacturers, importers and distributors as well as major suppliers to the industry. Originally established in New York City in 1937 as Cigar Manufacturers of America, the CAA’s roots date back to predecessor organizations prior to 1900. President John F. the internet is full of amazing tips, tutorials and inspiration to pull off any type of entertaining. Let me be your shortcut to using these ideas to your advantage and be fabulous, simply and effortlessly! The Sun is shining and the landscaping is pruned, groomed and planted; we all know what that means…time to take the party outside! Outdoor entertaining is one of my favorite things to do. Why? 1. The mess is outside. 2. It’s a party…enough said!
Don’t be overwhelmed with the idea of planning a party…the easiest thing to do is to take it on in steps: figure out what kind of party you want to have, (looking to images for inspiration can always help with this process) break the event down into areas, make your to-do-list and before you know it you’ll have a party planned and executed that would make Martha Stewart herself want you on her design team! No matter what the occasion or reason for throwing an outdoor party here are some key areas to focus on.

decorations
Depending on if you choose a theme or not you can go in many directions when it comes to decorations. An easy way to bring style and a cohesive look to your party is to use a color story throughout your space. Use the same color throughout the decorations, party details and sometimes even the menu items and refreshments! If you are having an evening outdoor party, great lighting is essential. Some fun options are paper lanterns, stringed
up lights or even candles hanging from the tree branches. Banners are very popular right now..use fabric that you have to create a pennant banner or cut out something to go with your theme and string them up! Mix citronella candles with colorful tea lights to keep away the bugs while maintaining a lovely look. Fresh cut flowers for the centerpieces thrown in vases or dishware that you already have add charm to your party! www.lakehomesmag.com

charcoal vs. gas
The flame war between charcoal grill purists and gas grill hotheads can get as hot as a good political party debate. And usually as effective, because when it comes to direct heat grilling, if all things are equal such as cooking temp, most folks can’t tell the difference in the taste between charcoal and gas grilled food. If you use strong flavored marinades, and sauces, you will never notice taste differences. You may think you can, but blind tastings have shown that you probably can’t. So with little to no taste difference, the choice comes down to convenience and cost. The clear winner of convenience is the gas grill. Featuring push-button ignitions, you have a consistent, steady
www.lakehomesmag.com
food&festivities heat source that’s ready to go within minutes, excellent temperature control, and easy cleanup. On the cost side of things the charcoal grill is the least expensive to purchase but you can spend an extra two to four dollars with every meal over the gas grill. So unless you derive a prehistoric pleasure from piling up the charcoal, lighting it, tending the fire, and manually adjusting cooking temperatures by moving food from hotter spots to cooler ones—you may be happier with a gas grill. gas vs. infra-red
The difference between gas and infra-red grills is not a fuel difference —they both use gas, either propane or natural. The difference is a regular gas grill cooks using convection and an infrared grill uses radiation. In a traditional gas grill a direct flame is used to heat the cooking surface. In infra-red grills you have a burner assembly made from stainless steel and ceramic, with the burner inside.
The burner heats up the ceramic plates, which in turn radiate heat up to the cooking surface. Infrared grills get really hot but they don’t typically do lower temperatures, where regular gas grills give you a broader range of temps but don’t usually get as hot. some grillers believe that infrared cooking allows you to more closely duplicate an open wood fire, even when using gas.
The higher temperatures of radiant heating do allow you to sear meats quicker, sealing in the natural juices; and they also allow foods to cook more quickly, giving them less opportunity to dry out. Helping foods retain more of their natural flavors. Which ever grill fits your fancy, the following receipe will help you produce a great steak every time.

directions Pour extra virgin olive oil in a container with a lid that will hold your steaks(just enough to be able to coat your steaks on both sides). Add the Zarda steak rub and cajun seasonings to the olive oil. Place each steak into the mixture, coating them well on both sides. Once you have them coated place them back in the container and drizzle with honey. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least one hour before placing on the grill and cooking to your desired temperature.
