FORMER MODEL AND actress Lauren-Elaine Edleson became fascinated with the fashion design world and turned her world around to become an acclaimed designer in her own right. With her degree in film, she used Hollywood for inspiration producing flowing, feminine pieces with hints of bygone eras. She uses silk, chiffon, Swarovski crystals, and ostrich feathers among other adornments; and with them she creates wearable, wonderful fashions for

Learning to sew from her mother while being raised in California gave her the skills she'd need, and her picture-perfect modeling physique gave her the exposure to the world of fashion as she strode the cat-walks and runways. Her college career took her to Austin and the University of Texas, where acting became a big part of her life. But, in 2007 Lauren-Elaine directed her interests and
talents toward designing and produced her Black Label collection in time for L.A. Fashion Week in 2008. Her most recent production includes the couture Black Label line (seen here) for spring of 2010, where celebrities and fans can find ultra-feminine evening gowns, cocktail dresses, and separates. We love her clear breath of fresh air in fashion, and admire her feminine instincts to follow her passion and produce gorgeous women's wear.

in the Lake Saint Louis area, builder Rob Enloe and wife, Shari, honed their palettes and passion for wine in nearby Augusta, Missouri. So when the opportunity availed for the couple to build a home of their own, it’s fitting that Rob and Shari sought —and succeeded—in manifesting their own private Tuscany, perched high atop The Lake of the Ozarks in a gated community of Osage Beach aptly named Palisades Highlands.

Much like the Tuscan culture after which this veritable villa was modeled, The Enloes share a passion for life so precious and rare, that it’s simply no wonder this dynamic—and wildly successful—duo believe that life itself is truly a cause for celebration. In fact, many of the lake home’s divine details are driven not by a desire to be pompous

or showy—though 8,550 square feet filled to its super-luxurious roof perhaps speaks for itself—but rather, intended as comfort features, such as the seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms including two full master suites, so guests may luxuriate in the same amenities as Rob and Shari. One master suite even features a full coffee bar so one can enjoy coffee while watching the morning news on the flatscreen above the fireplace without even leaving the cozy confines of the bedroom. Because Rob and Shari also share a zeal for ballroom dancing, Rob says he even built the master suite’s shower floor surface with comfort in mind. “We grouted in pebbles, about the size of a quarter, that actually massage the feet—after coming home from a long night of ballroom dancing, it's really nice to step on that,” Rob says. Rob and Shari’s joie de vivre is also evidenced by the splendor of design

A built-on-site floating staircase welcomes guests with an air of grandeur, and beckons anyone to float down, if just for fun before walking out to perhaps the home’s most covetous feature—the view, where vast stretches of water reach deeply between the endless valleys and peaks of the Ozark Mountains. A near-invisible glass patio wall promises an unobstructed view, whether when floating in the pool, Jacuzzi… or bed. While there are many a feature of the Enloe estate that exude a sexy air (no wonder they have five kids!), Rob agrees that perhaps nothing attests better to a home’s sexiness than its lighting, which is why he has placed such striking emphasis on illumination.

“This is a very open floorplan, which, at night, takes on a very sexy appeal,” Rob says. “We have lighting around the ceilings that shine upon 16-inch, threepiece crown molding, and at night, the effect is really breathtaking… lighting just really turns this house on.”
Despite the Enloes’ grand floor plan, Rob maintains that the old adage stating that “bigger is better” doesn’t always hold true. In fact, he is currently working on a plan for a scaled-down version of his home that possesses the same, superlative caliber of features and trim, but about half the square footage. “Especially in this economic landscape, bigger isn’t always better—people are looking for something different, but don’t want to sacrifice quality… I think it’s a greatly untapped market…and I’ll call this concept a ‘mini mansion,’” Rob says. Rob and Shari only build about three homes per year, so as not to forsake any degree of quality in their final, magnificent product. If a lake home like theirs is on your horizon, why not do what the Enloes did and call upon a design you already love, only improving on it via subtle variation? After all, the lake is such an exemplary place to call home, whether you seek a Tuscan spread like the Enloes or something completely different… what matters is that you—like the Enloes— make it yours.
house & dock Decorating with Your Personality YOU’RE THE BOSS many decorating styles in the world as there are personalities, which is really what makes homes, rooms, parties, and lives interesting. All of the famous decorator/ designers have their own signature styles and personalities shining through their work, even when they design something based on a customer’s request. (Actually, that would be a fun experiment! Give two designers the exact same room along with the same fabrics, furniture, accessories... and see the differences when they’ve finished!) The point for the rest of us (who don’t happen to be Nate or know Mary Carol) is that personality should play a major role in our decorating decisions. We have so many questions already! More than any other
type of domicile, a lake habitat reveals the unique personality and air of its occupants. This is a place where life is ordered only by the need to relax, recreate and enjoy the company of friends and family. The architecture of a lake home then should enable and enhance the lake experience—from capturing views to accommodating guests comfortably to providing convenient access to the water. In addition to responding to purely functional goals in the lake home design, the architect is also tasked with elevating the retreat experience of all the spaces, both interior and exterior.
The subject of “curb appeal” arises most often when a home is about to be placed on the market. The present homeowners scurry about planting flowers and shrubs, painting the trim or removing a blighted tree. Sometimes the remedy may be more extensive (replacing a roof, new windows, siding, etc.). The objective is simply to attract the attention and hold the interest of a potential buyer long enough for them to get out of their car and see what a wonderful home you have once they step inside. A lake home is particularly important when considering curb appeal, as this type of property actually has two “curb fronts”—the street side and the lake side. In many instances the lakeside “curb appeal” is more critical than the street side. The waterfront is where most of the home is best appreciated, usually due to selective tree removal in order to preserve the views of the lake. Also, more of the architectural details are

revealed from the water side as many sites are sloped, and all stories of the home are visible. The front (street side) appearance of the lake home is important, because it is the opportunity to cast a favorable initial impression. The lakeside view reveals more information about the home, as it conveys a lot about the lifestyle, upkeep and care of family living there. The landscaping, dock area, lawn, decks and patios hint at what one might expect to encounter on the inside of the home. The initial impressions from the lakeside as well as the front of the home can lure or dismiss prospective buyers based on a quick glance. There are several effective ways to enhance a lake home’s property values for future sale consideration, while adding more present enjoyment for the homeowners and guests. In addition to attractive, well-designed decks and patios, many lake home owners are enhancing their yards with outdoor

grilles, fire pits & fireplaces; threeseason lanais, screened porches, trellises, shoreline sitting terraces, gazebos, arbors, pools, spas, and sport courts among other amenities. These improvements allow expanded use of the outdoor spaces, build monetary value in the home and enhance “curb” appeal. Another opportunity for heightening curb appeal is to consider an exterior architectural “facelift”. Many lake homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s, and even some homes constructed more recently tend to convey a dated, unexciting appearance. This can be remedied with a number of creative modifications, not necessarily involving a tremendous cost to accomplish. New window elements (bow, bay or box styles), a covered entry porch & railings, professionally designed landscaping, new siding, stone or brick veneer are a few practical ideas which raise value and can enliven the exterior of the home’s architecture.

The irony is that sulfites are a natural byproduct of the fermentation process, so hardly any wine is truly sulfite-free. Most winemakers, including most practicing organic methods, regard the addition of sulfites as necessary to the making of good wine – and indeed, the practice goes back hundreds of years. But if sulfites are used, even in minute amounts, the wine itself can’t be called organic. Without sulfites, most wines have a shelf life of no longer than one year, and must be consumed within 24 hours of uncorking. The solution could be drink faster! There are many choices, perhaps dizzying enough to make your head swim, and that is even before you

Sundancer 540DA a common name around the lakes, but Sea Ray's 540DA Sundancer is a stretch from common. It wasn't long ago, American made express cruisers had straight hull lines, reverse-facing radar arches, and interiors that resembled elaborate crawl spaces compared with smooth, sexier imports from Europe. Straight from Knoxville, Tennessee, the 540DA’s extra-roomy interior SEA RAY IS
is a prodigious advancement over previous models. The spacious cockpit is perfect for entertaining, with helm and companion seats on a centerline pedestal. The rear lounge with its winged back is designed so astutely, opening to create a massive sunning pad. The sleeping areas, whether the two or three bedroom version, resemble suites as opposed to cabins. And, the master

Boat is possibly not romantic enough of a word, but Chris Smith advertised it as such as early as 1915, when he offered, “Let me build you a Smith boat.” This one man would create an empire and an American dream out of mahogany and brass. But such success only came about after the creation of the Chris Smith and Sons Boat

Company, a partnership with Garfield Wood (no pun intended, really), and several Gold Cup winners. For those of us not savvy in the terms of boat-building, suffice it to say that Smith's boats were equipped to impress with state-of-the-art electronics, double-planked bottoms, and the large rear-cockpit design. In a word, they were sexy. By 1922, Chris had employed his four sons in the business, and it had been renamed to Chris-Craft, the iconic moniker we've all come to know and love. In 1924, they were making four boats per week. Chris-Craft designed an advertising campaign to live up to the quality and growing popularity of the boats,

themselves. Americans were learning to appreciate the finer conveniences of life, including the stylish and impressively quick runabout, the meat and potatoes of their market. Now... picture Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, she in a flowing white gown and he in his trademark hat and dapper suit... sipping martinis as they glide by the New York shoreline with the city lights glowing in the evening background. They've docked to pick up friends and entertain until dawn... on their Chris-Craft yacht. Although the name doesn't appear anywhere, we all know that's what boat they are on, it's a glorious mahogany craft that carries the ambiance of only one name.

(If this isn't a scene from a movie, it should be!) Regattas were awash in Chris-Crafts for decades, with the smart nautically dressed people who owned them cheering on their trophy-winning boats from the docks and shores. We dare say that regattas flourished from the East Coast through the various lake communities throughout the States, all the way to the West Coast, as did the Chris-Craft. Next to owning an automobile, purchasing a Chris-Craft was the most Americana thing folks could do to propel their images and their families into the post-war American dream. It brought class to the water's-edge home, where extended family and
friends could spend the summer soaking up the sports life, while relaxing and entertaining... all at the same time. The proof of Chris-Craft's popularity was found in the pudding. By 1959, there were 5,000 people working in ten factories. We imagine the production line was faster than four boats per week. We have our own special memories of zipping about in a classic, polished Chris-Craft on a certain lake in Colorado with some very special friends in the 1960s and '70s. And, we're proud to be a part of the heritage of this truly American success story.
