chairman’s welcome
Alice Hunt, 2011 Chairman of the Board
It is a privilege to present to you Lakeland: Close to Everything, Away From it All. Lakeland’s outstanding quality of life is featured in the first section, providing residents and visitors the resources to plug in to the community and get involved. The Lakeland community offers something for everyone: arts & culture, world-class education, outdoor adventures, and some of the best food and festivals on the planet! Continuing the Chamber’s “Buy Lakeland. It makes good cents!” campaign, the 2011 Buyer’s Guide presents consumers with the information they need to support Lakeland businesses and Lakeland’s economic development. Buying goods and services locally employs our neighbors, builds our schools and roads and keeps our citizens safe. You will also find the contact information for the talented staff at the Chamber. President Kathleen Munson and her staff continue to work in challenging times to provide valuable programs such as Leadership Lakeland, Schmooze a’Palooza, Business After Hours, EMERGE Lakeland and many more. Through their efforts the Lakeland Chamber has earned the U.S. Chamber’s Five Star Accreditation award, one of only 65 chambers in the country. Our Chamber team is synonymous with excellence, innovation and service. 2011 is going to be an interesting year… the landscape of Florida’s politics will change under new leadership on many levels. USF Polytechnic will break ground and LEGOLAND Florida is scheduled to open this fall. Economically we continue to face challenges and guide our businesses through a “new normal” of uncertainty, tight budgets and transparency. The Lakeland Chamber’s business leadership and staff are united, committed and passionate about moving forward with one vision and one voice. The Chamber is fortunate to enjoy a kaleidoscope of business members. So, keep this publication close, use the 2011 Buyer’s Guide and the directory at LakelandChamber.com, participate in Chamber activities and take an active role to promote your business. Together, we can make growing your business our business!
“Buy Lakeland, it makes good cents!”
Alice Hunt grew up traveling the world as part of a military family. Settling in Lakeland, she became the fifth generation to call Lakeland home. Alice graduated from the University of South Florida earning a Bachelors Degree in early childhood education. After teaching for a few years, Alice joined the business founded by her husband Chuck, Hunt Construction of Central Florida, Inc. The business was expanding rapidly and required the focus and commitment of both to offer the highest standards of quality and customer service expected from each residential and commercial project. Alice serves the company as Vice President overseeing financial and project management as well as marketing and customer care. She also serves as property manager for the several rental properties built over the years with Hunt Properties of Florida. Throughout the years Alice has been very involved in the community in many organizations and leadership roles including American Heart Association, George Jenkins High School, School to Work, Florida Homebuilders Association Education and Political Action Committees, Polk County Builders Association Education and Political Action Committees, PCBA Foundation, Polk County Charter Review Commission, Citizens for Quality Education Appointed Superintendent Campaign and Central Florida Speech and Hearing. Alice is a graduate of Leadership Lakeland Class 17 and joined the board of directors of the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce in 2006. She has served on the Executive Committee since 2007 as Education Vice Chair and then as Chair-Elect. Alice and Chuck have three children, Neil a University of Florida graduate in aerospace engineering, Alyssa a Southeastern University graduate in marketing, and Abigail a cosmetology graduate from Traviss Career Academy. Of course, most of their free time is spent recently with Kylee, their granddaughter. Alice is proud to say that at this time, the entire family has chosen to make Lakeland home. 2011 LAKELAND AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE | 1

When approached in 1938 by then-college president Dr. Ludd Spivey with a request to design “a great education temple in Florida,” Frank Lloyd Wright was well-known as the world’s leading architect. The plan Mr. Wright designed for Florida Southern is in keeping with his innovative vision for buildings to work in harmony with the land. Twelve of the 18 structures Mr. Wright designed for Florida Southern were built over a 20-year span, and all but one of the structures was built by students working with Mr. Wright. Today, the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center attracts more than 30,000 visitors annually to tour the campus, along with an
