Chairman’s Circle members welcome Legoland development GM

The Chairman’s Circle hosted its Spring Business Luncheon on June 3, and welcomed special guest John Ussher, General Manager of Legoland Development. Brian Philpot, former co-owner of Cypress Gardens, introduced Ussher and shared background on how the project landed in Polk County.

Ussher unveiled new details of the Legoland Florida theme park being developed on the site of the former Cypress Gardens attraction in Winter Haven. The park is scheduled to open in November of 2011.

Ussher displayed artists' renditions of plans for the park, the heart of which will be a "Miniland," a collection of elaborate models constructed from about 20 million Lego bricks. Ussher said the “Miniland” at the Legoland Florida park will include some elements of the version at Legoland California, including models of Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., and California.

The highlight of the local “Miniland” will be a Florida area shaped as a peninsula surrounded by water. Ussher said Legoland model-makers also plan to

incorporate elements from Kennedy Space Center and Daytona Beach, and are working on a replica of the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Annie Pfeiffer Chapel at Florida Southern College.

Legoland Florida will retain the water-ski shows that were the trademark of Cypress Gardens as well as the former Splash Island Waterpark, scheduled to reopen on Memorial Day weekend of 2012.

Legoland also plans to retain some of the rides from Cypress Gardens, including one roller coaster.

Ussher also described plans for an education program, coordinated through the Polk County School District, which would bring thousands of students to the park each year at greatly discounted rates.

Ussher said ticket prices to Legoland Florida will be in line with the other Central Florida attractions. Legoland parks are geared toward children in the 2-12 age range, which will complement the other family-oriented theme parks in the Central Florida region. Two new members were introduced during the luncheon: John Corbett with CenterState Bank, and Jeff Baker with FedEx National LTL. Other members shared updates on their business, and several commented they were seeing positive upticks in their business activity.

The Chairman’s Circle is a special membership forum for senior level executives. May’s Business After Hours took our members “out to the ballpark”, as the Lakeland Flying Tigers and Lakeland Electric teamed up to host the event.

Live entertainment was provided as well as a feast of delicious food prepared

Because of the magnitude of this proposed amendment, the Chamber has made it our #1 legislative priority this year. Business employers are asked to educate their employees on this important issue and encourage them to “VOTE NO ON 4” on the general election ballot in November.

Half Cent Sales Tax Referendum for a County-wide Public Transit System: In November, voters will also be asked to approve a half cent sales tax to fund a county-wide public transit system. Following the 2010 U.S. Census, Polk County will no longer be eligible for Federal funding that has supported the public transit system currently in place in Lakeland, Winter Haven and some other areas of the county.

At its meeting in May, the Chamber board of directors adopted a resolution in support of the proposed sales tax referendum. While there is no good time to increase taxes, and especially in today’s economic environment, the board of directors felt that a county-wide public transit system is critically connected to the economic vitality, quality of life, and regional and statewide connectivity of our county and region.

Over the next several months, we will be working to educate member businesses and the community on why it is important to support this referendum in the November election. Lakeland’s Hospitality Award Winners

Nominations sought for 2011 Board of Directors

The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce is fortunate to be led by an elected 36-member board of directors and five ex-officio members.

These dedicated volunteer leaders direct the governance of the Chamber and represent the interests of our 1,700 members.

This month, a nominating committee headed by Chair-elect Alice Hunt (Hunt Construction of Central Florida, Inc.) will convene to nominate 12 new directors to serve a three-year term on the Chamber’s board of directors, effective January 1, 2011.

Active Chamber members in good standing are invited to submit their names or the names of other members who meet the qualifications of nomination. Nominations will be submitted to the 2011 Officers and Directors Nominating Committee.

The Annual Polk County Tourism and Sports Marketing “Tourism Awareness Day” Breakfast was held at Lake Eva Banquet Hall in Haines City on May 25. As a very special part of the program, Restaurant and Hospitality Awards were presented to exemplary employees, who are not always seen and recognized, but provide valuable services to our Lakeland customers. It is commendable customer service provided by these inspiring employees that make Lakeland unique and impressive - and brings back tourism business time and time again!

Special Hospitality Awards were presented to: Hospitality Award Winner Bryan French, Operations Support Supervisor II for the City of Lakeland at Hollis Garden. Bryan was nominated by Bill Tinsley, Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Lakeland. As operations support supervisor for his organization, his hard work and dedication directly result in major facilities being recognized as the best in the state – including Joker Marchant Stadium Field and Tiger Town Facilities.

And finally, The Community Partner Award went to the Detroit Tigers.

I see you, but do you see me? I see you when you are shopping. I know when you are relaxing because you are catching a movie, getting a massage or maybe even a manicure and pedicure.

I also see you in all of the restaurants and sometimes sneaking to get some ice cream. Yes...I see you, but do you see me? I got really excited when I saw you reading a book across the street from me and that is why I started saying Hello to you. It was then I knew we had something in common. “LEARNING” I am Webster University and our NEW HOME is what appears to be your Home away from Home. Yes, Lakeside Village! We are located at 1479 Town Center Drive, near the circle fountain. Webster University was established in 1915 in St. Louis, Missouri and now includes more than 100 campuses across the nation and around the globe. The Lakeland campus was established in 1999 and has proudly served the citizens of Polk County. Webster University is consistently ranked in the Top-25 for graduate programs and is firmly established as a Top-Tier University.

Monday through Thursday, and occasionally on a Saturday we have learning parties which consist of MBA, Management & Leadership, Human Resource Management, School Guidance, Community Counseling, Marriage and Family, and Mental Health Counseling classes. All of these classes can be enjoyed on site and most can be taken online if you prefer. We do like to keep our parties small with a maximum of 20 people per class. Our instructors are experienced working professionals in the field they teach.

Webster University believes in building strong communities and takes pride in saying that our alumni typically choose to remain here in the local area. In fact our Master’s degree graduates have gone on to become some of the most well-respected school guidance counselors, mental health therapists, business professionals and managers working for some of the leading organizations throughout Polk County.
