I just received an e-mail from a speaker named Hilary, explaining how someone was offended by something in one of his speeches. It’s not the first time. He used to get complaints about selling his books and other programs at the end of his speeches. You’ve heard of Hilary, though by another name: Zig Ziglar. But unless you know Zig, you might not know that he’s the most sincere, ethical, and humble person you could ever meet. He’s not a snake oil

salesman trying to manipulate people into buying something they don’t need. To the contrary, his materials have changed people’s lives and he believes he’s doing them a disservice if he doesn’t convince them to read his books or listen to his CD’s. If your company provides a product or service that helps people, you’re doing them a disservice by not trying to get them to take advantage of those products or services. The essence of customer service is serving people. This
includes selling them products or services they’ll benefit from, even when they don’t yet know how they’ll benefit. Every Thursday I send out an email to tens of thousands of people, selling one of my DVD programs or teleseminars. Each time, three things happen: 1. We get complaints from people who don’t like the sales pitch. 2. We get orders. 3. People who’ve bought the program in the past tell us how it’s benefited them. We know we’re
serving our customers by doing this because the orders and positive feedback outnumber the complaints by about 500 to 1. And because we send these programs out to try for free and let people return them without paying if they don’t think it’s for them, I put my money where my mouth is. I’d be just as passionate if I were a chiropractor, insurance salesman, or CPA; because I believe they provide services that benefit people far beyond the fees they charge.
They have to believe strongly in what your company does. But what if you don’t believe in what your company sells? Then you would be a snake oil salesman trying to manipulate people into buying things they won’t benefit from. If that’s the case, find a job with a company that provides something you do believe in.

I was born in Polk County, and it was a very different place when I was growing up. Being a MexicanAmerican female in Polk County in the 80’s and 90’s was no easy task; I never really felt like I “fit in” anywhere. Thankfully, I had a good family, great friends, and went to an outstanding school (IB-Bartow) that helped me through those times. I returned to Polk County after an 11 year absence in 2010. During my absence, I attended school, worked, went back to school, and eventually became an attorney. It wasn’t until my return home that I realized
that many of those old feelings still persist. You see, I live at the intersection of two very different cultures. I am fútbol and football; I love the World Cup and never miss the Superbowl. I am mariachis and rock ’n roll. I eat from taco stands in Wahneta, and I enjoy wine and cheese tastings. I have so much love for my home church, a Catholic Mission in Wahneta whose primary service is to poor migrant farmworkers. I fit in as easily there as I do at the professional networking events I regularly attend. I move easily between these two
worlds because I speak Spanish and I speak English. To borrow from a commercial I recently saw: my duality is my reality. How could I ever reconcile these two very different worlds? In my office I have a replica of Frida Kahlo’s “The Two Fridas.” Now, I am no artist, nor do I claim to know very much about art, but this painting speaks to me and inspires me every day. The painting depicts one solitary artery joining the hearts of two very different looking Fridas: an “Indian” Frida and a “European” Frida. You could easily replace the depictions of Frida with
images of my two very different worlds, and I am the solitary artery connecting the two. This painting helped me realize that my true calling is to be a bridge - a bridge that is meant to narrow the gap between these two different worlds, and I’m happy to say that I’ve been finding ways to put that quality to good use. Recently, I had the honor and privilege of being the chair of the first “Walk of Roses.” This was a Susan G. Komen educational luncheon for Hispanic women held during “Make Polk Pink Week.” I was able to bridge the gap
that existed in breast cancer education, and it was my duality that helped make the event a success. Realizing, accepting, and putting my true calling to good use has allowed me to emerge into my true self. I am actively involved in Emerge Lakeland, a group that has given me many opportunities for fellowship with other young professionals who are also working on “emerging” into their true selves. FORUM: What are the most important decisions you make as a leader of your company? DSM: As the CEO of DSM, the most important decisions I make focus on the vision for the organization… not only the vision of where we are going as a company, but the vision of making DSM’s corporate culture one of bright employees who like to work hard and play hard. FORUM: Where do the greatest ideas come from in your organization? DSM: The greatest ideas from our organization come from our engaged and proactive staff at all levels within the organization. We encourage staff members to think outside of the box and bring forward any ideas they may have. Often, it is brainstorming and bouncing ideas off of each other that creates the next best idea. FORUM: Which is most important to your company – mission, core values or vision? DSM: I think the core values of DSM are what sustain it. A company can easily determine its mission and vision; however, it is the way you do business with people that ultimately keeps them doing business with you. DSM is fortunate to have many customers who have been with us long-term. I attribute that not only to being able to provide them with the solutions they need but also to being their trusted advisor who is looking out for their best interests. FORUM: Is your college GPA reflective of your potential? DSM: While I was a serious college student and made very good grades, I believe my potential lies outside the realm of book study and more within my ability to envision the next possibility, reflect on it from 360º and inspire people to make it a reality. I believe that I would have benefitted more from a hands-on, experiential learning design like a true polytechnic approach rather than the traditional education I had. FORUM: What do you see ahead for your company in the next five years? DSM: Growth! Our vision for the next five years is to create innovative and profitable solutions to drive growth exponentially. With that growth comes the necessary evil of realigning our business processes for scalability while maintaining a stellar customer service focus.

FORUM: When faced with two equallyqualified candidates, how do you determine whom to hire? CFR: We work very hard at not ruling candidates out, but rather ruling in the best candidate. In other words we vet each candidate until we see that one is a stronger or is a more precise fit for our current needs. We are very fortunate to be frequently interviewing highly qualified, capable candidates. We review our specific needs and drill in during the interview stage to make sure an offer will result in a mutually successful working relationship. FORUM: As an organization gets larger, there can be a tendency for the “institution” to dampen the “inspiration”. How do you keep this from happening? CFR: Our Values include passion and fun, along with the professionalism and accountability. We encourage our staff to be spontaneous and creative. Additionally we don’t write policies that box us into corners resulting in a “red tape culture” – rather we follow the “do the right thing” philosophy and deal with issues with dignity. FORUM: How do you communicate “core values” to employees? CFR: From all angles – the values are displayed in our offices, we emulate them at career fairs and during our recruiting processes, we focus on them during on-boarding of new hires, and we renew our commitment to them by reviewing them regularly at firm-wide events. FORUM: Would Mahatma Gandhi have made a good CPA? CFR: CPA’s , in general, are passionate, focused, driven, ethical, sensitive, astute, careful, and very smart - I would think the man that said ”You must be the change you want to see in the world. “ would make a brilliant CPA. FORUM: What do you see ahead for your company in the next five years? CFR: Growth, in many areas – expansion of offices and the development of leaders within the firm. We are poised for great things and plan to make it happen.

FORUM: What is the biggest challenge facing you as an employer today? EAC: Our biggest challenge as an employer is to ensure that our employees feel appreciated for the work that they do every day. A simple “Thank You” and identifying opportunities to recognize performance and service excellence have aided us in our improvement efforts in this area. FORUM: What are a few resources you would recommend to someone looking to gain insight to becoming a better leader? EAC: The Harvard Business Review is a publication that every professional should subscribe to. The articles on management and leadership stretch across many industries, but are useful in self-reflection and strategizing personal and professional growth opportunities. In addition, take advantage of opportunities to network with peers in the area by attending Chamber functions and the trainings held by Polk Works. There is no equal to the exchange of ideas between leaders! FORUM: How do you help a new employee understand the culture of your organization? EAC: Extensive orientation and follow up are keys to instilling and maintaining the culture of the organization. We believe that supervisors and employees should serve as models of excellence and help mentor new employees. FORUM: If you could be a superhero, what power would you possess? EAC: It always seems like there is not enough time in the day to do everything and be involved in the community. I would like to be able to slow time to allow me to accomplish more each day, spend more time with our residents and employees, and increase my involvement in the community. FORUM: What do you see ahead for your company in the next five years? EAC: The Estates continues to work with residents and staff to identify areas for growth and improvement. We are committed to expanding upon our current approaches for employee engagement and believe that long-term success is dependent upon creating a partnership with our employees and residents. We believe that this approach is the reason we received the honor of a “Best Places to Work” award for the last two years. As a not-for-profit organization we feel that we have a responsibility to make a difference. Over the next five years our goals are to continue and improve upon this partnership and identify new ways to serve our residents, employees, and the greater Lakeland area.

FORUM: What advice would you give someone in a leadership position for the first time? SWS: Be yourself, be organized, and capitalize on the differences and opinions within your team. The best ideas or greatest team solutions never come from the first thing out of our mouths or from one way of thinking. FORUM: How do you encourage creative thinking within your organization? SWS: Because status quo is not acceptable we hold regularly scheduled brainstorming sessions and open forum Town Hall meetings at all levels. Some of our managers also attend and share throughout our Operation their experiences from The Forum at Southeastern University and World Business Forum in New York City. FORUM: What is one characteristic that you believe every leader should possess? SWS: Positivity and belief in his or her people. Be fascinated by your employees, not frustrated by them. We recently conducted training for all levels of employees on using Positive Psychology in all facets of life. FORUM: House, office, car – which do you clean first? SWS: I keep all three fairly well organized but my truck gets the most attention. FORUM: What do you see ahead for your company in the next five years? SWS: Continued growth within Florida and nationally. FORUM FOR BUSINESS

Architects design buildings in which we work and live. They also design Egyptian temples for theme parks, structures to wrap and protect fifty million dollar lines of equipment, and new structural supports to replace decayed load-bearing walls in sensitive historic structures… or at least SCMH Architects does. SCMH Architects was established in Lakeland in 1975 as Swilley, Curtis, and Bertossi by Bob Swilley, John Curtis, and Walter Bertossi. In 2006 the name was changed to SCMH Architects; the
current principals being John Curtis, Ben Mundy, Keith Hunnicutt, and as the third generation of the firm, Jon Kirk. Since its inception, SCMH has been located on South Florida Avenue in the Dixieland historic district, in offices that were one of the first major upgrades in the Dixieland CRA. Their business is primarily concentrated in Polk County, but includes work in multiple states throughout the country, from Phoenix to Philadelphia, with a wide range of private, public, and institutional clients. Many of the local schools
and Lakeland Fire Department facilities were designed by SCMH. They were one of the early adopters of CADD technology in the mid1980’s, and designed the first LEED Certified building in Polk County. Areas of practice include religious facilities, institutional buildings, campus designs, manufacturing plants, and historic redesign. The staff of 10 averages 19 years of employment with the firm, which offers full health and pension benefits. The variety of clients, quality of work, attention to needs, and support of
their staff have enabled the firm to prosper these past 37 years, through the ups and downs of the volatile construction industry. The firm’s principals not only improve the quality of life in Lakeland and Polk County through their work product, but also, as importantly, through their extensive civic involvement. Challenge. Triumph. Change This year’s CommUnity Celebration honors diversity and the human spirit with one of our nation’s heroes. August 17, 2004 was a life changing day for Major Ed Pulido, U.S. Army. That was the day that he lost his left leg in a roadside bomb while serving in Iraq. Major Pulido’s story of courage and sacrifice has been featured in Time Magazine, PGA Magazine, Fox News, and CNN. During his time in the hospital he experienced the inner darkness that one might expect in such a situation. It was during this time that he knew he had choices. He chose to use that experience for the good of others, which also helped in his healing. His message is one that reminds us that there are many people with physical challenges in our community who can do great things. While his injuries were sustained while serving our country, there are many other people who live with physical challenges from other origins. The message is for us all. The annual CommUnity Celebration is hosted by the Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce for the sole purpose of bringing members of our community together to celebrate our diversities. Attendees leave the event feeling inspired and encouraged. Over the years, speakers have shared storied of adversity with outcomes that not only show survival, but success. Chamber Presents Terracotta Warrior to Polk Museum of Art The Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce offered a trip to China in October, 2011. As a symbol of the relationship built between the Chamber and the tour provider, a replica of the famous Terracotta Warrior in Xi’an was delivered as a gift. The Terracotta Army is a collection of sculptures dating from the 3rd century BC that depict the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. The Chamber was proud to present this 600 lb work of art to the Polk Museum of Art, where it will be stored for a future exhibition. Kathleen Munson, President and Alice Hunt, 2011 Chairman of the Board present the Terracotta Warrior to Adam Justice, Museum Curator and Pal Powell, Senior Executive Assistant and Interim Director. Carolyn Jackson was the host to the 40 travelers to China.

Kyle Vreeland, REALTOR® and sales associate, was recently appointed to the Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners, by Mayor Gow Fields. Joining six other commissioners on the board, Vreeland is appointed to a 4-year term of office. Vreeland is a recognized expert on retail properties in Polk County, including restaurants. Jonathan Barreras recently joined the firm as Business Information Systems Analyst. Jonathan is responsible for the information technology systems, database management, technical projects, and Web site projects for both CBCSRD and Coldwell Banker Commercial Saunders Real Estate. Jonathan brings to the companies his strong experience in IT problem solving, computer networking, small business computer environments, and specialized CAD architectural drawing skills. Anil Merai has recently joined the firm as Realtor® and sales associate. Anil specializes in general commercial real estate, such as retail, gas stations, convenience stores, office, multifamily, and investment properties.
Polk State College Recently donated about 100 soccer uniforms, more than 50 backpacks and several warm-up outfits to A Millien Dreams Foundation in Leogane, Haiti. Polk State Chain of Lakes Collegiate High School students collected the donations during a service-learning project designed to increase fitness and health awareness.

Officially, the Leadership Lakeland program is a one year commitment, but the commitment for some of the graduating classes unofficially continues well past graduation. All graduates are encouraged to join the Leadership Lakeland Alumni Association, a strong and valuable organization with a formalized plan for each year including social, educational, and philanthropic activities to benefit the community. Beyond membership with the Alumni Association, many classes continue to get together throughout the year. Leadership Lakeland Class 27 used their December Holiday Party to not only to socialize and reminisce, but also to decide on its annual community project for 2012. After each member shared his or her idea at the gathering, a dilemma arose. With so many community needs and such great group diversity, it was challenging to focus efforts on just one project. The class addressed this dilemma by electing to take on four service projects for 2012. All projects were dropped in a hat, and one was drawn for each quarter. Coincidentally, all four projects have a common thread – children!
The first quarter service project is Polk County School Board’s Project Fill-A-Bag. Project Fill-A-Bag assists Polk County public school students who meet the federal criteria as homeless or who are at risk of becoming homeless. More than 1,411 students throughout the district are in need of necessities. The Achievement Academy will be the focus of Class 27’s second quarter project. The Academy assists children with special needs to help them reach their maximum potential by providing quality education, therapy and family support. With the Achievement Academy mission and their needs in mind, Class 27 will be in attendance for the Hope for Brighter Futures luncheon on May 9 at Lakeland Yacht and Country Club. During the summer months, The DiapersForAll project will be the class focus. Inspired by the birth of their beautiful daughter, Shannon Lanier and David Steele established this program to provide diapers to financially strapped families. Shannon and David partnered with Catholic Charities of Central Florida to establish a fund that focuses on collecting and distributing diapers to local families. Class 27’s final project of the year will be volunteering for Junior Achievement. This nonprofit organization employs community volunteers to educate and inspire young people to succeed in our global economy. Since 1997, volunteers and business partners have been teaching students at all grade levels in Polk County classrooms about finances and careers. Class 27 will adopt a Polk County school and teach the students in its classrooms using curriculum provided by Junior Achievement.
