Day-By-Day Itinerary Day 1 – Sunday October 12, 2014: Tampa - Havana: Depart from your local airport today and travel to Havana, Cuba as you begin your people-to-people cultural exchange with the citizens of Cuba! Tonight, attend a briefing with your tour manager in preparation for your journey. This evening dinner is served at the hotel. (Dinner) Day 2 – Monday October 13, 2014: Cienfuegos: Enjoy breakfast at the hotel today and each morning of your tour. Start your travels to the Pearl of the South, the port city of Cienfuegos, Cuba. A UNESCO world-heritage site since 2005, Cienfuegos is known for its remarkable neoclassical structures. Arrive at your hotel for check-in and a welcome dinner. (Breakfast, Dinner) Day 3 – Tuesday October 14, 2014: Cienfuegos: Your exploration of Cienfuegos and its people continues today with a visit to the Botanical Gardens and interaction with botanists to learn about the foundations of plant life in Cuba. This is adjacent to the Pepito Tey community, where you will have the opportunity to interact with the local residents. Your visit will continue with stops at Jose Marti Park, Tomas Terry Theater, and a walk along Cienfuegos Boulevard to see a local rationing store and shops. Lunch is served at Paladar El Tranvia; "paladars" are typically family run businesses and provide interaction with Cuban people, as an alternative to staterun restaurants. Meet with local ensembles, and visit the Benny Moré Music School (subject to approval); Benny Moré, one of the greats of Latin Music, was revolutionary in his approach to his Cuban rhythms which are still heard today in the people’s music. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 4 – Wednesday October 15, 2014: Havana: After breakfast, depart the hotel this morning for a full-day’s outing, beginning at Boca de Guamá on the Península de Zapata and continuing to a crocodile farm where you will learn of their specialized conservation and breeding programs. Later this morning, embark on a boat ride to the Laguna del Tesoro which will take you to visit an Indian Village. Lunch will be enjoyed at Casa Enrique in Caleton, a paladar in this typical Cuban fishing village. The Península is a place filled with history, including the military defeat of US-backed Cuban revolutionaries on April 17, 1961 in the notorious Bay of Pigs incident. Here you’ll visit the Bay of Pigs and its museum. Your day will end in Havana with check-in to your hotel and dinner. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 5 – Thursday October 16, 2014: Havana: The day begins with a panoramic overview of the capital city of Havana and its 500-year old city center. There is a photo stop at Plaza de La Revolución and its memorial to a 19th-century Cuban patriot. A local expert will share the treasures of the Palacio de Bellas Artes, dedicated exclusively to Cuban art spanning three centuries; a section here is devoted to narrative scenes of Cuban life including prevalent symbolic imagery from the 1970’s, displaying the richness of the island’s Spanish, French, Chinese, African, and Aboriginal cultural roots. Afterward, lunch will be enjoyed in Old Havana, and this afternoon there will be an informative walk through Old Havana including the Plaza de Armas, Palacio de los Capitanes, Castillo de la Real Fuerza, St. Francis Square and Plaza Vieja. During the walk you will be accompanied by an architect from the historian’s office in order to understand the importance of restoration projects in the works. A visit to a community project for the elderly will also engage an interactive discussion with the locals. Dinner is served at a local restaurant tonight. The dramatic ceremony of El Cañonazo is this evening’s highlight, with the firing of the 9 p.m. cannon at the Fortress of San de La Cabaña; a reenactment dating back to 1519 when the walled city offered protection from pirates and the English. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 6 – Friday October 17, 2014: Havana: This morning travel to the western end of the island, and the province of Pinar del Rio. Visit Cueva del Palenque, which originally served as a refuge for escaped slaves. The musical traditions of Cuba include some of the most popular world music ever recorded and was born from the African and European immigrants that came to the island. Enjoy lunch at El Palenque de los Cimarrones, featuring the Cimarron cuisine of Cuban slaves. You will also participate in a demonstration of Afro-Cuban dance and music. Here you'll also visit the impressive 1961 Mural de La Prehistoria, and walk through the picturesque village of Viñales. This valley is located at the heart of Cuba’s prime tobacco-growing region, and as such is surrounded by the natural scenery of the Sierra de los Organos Mountains. Here, you'll meet with local farmers at Benito’s Tobacco Farm & House to learn first-hand the complexities of the harvesting of the most famous tobacco leaves in the world. During your return to Havana, there is a stop at Los Jasmines viewpoint offering incredible vistas of the region. Dinner tonight is served at a local restaurant. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) Day 7 – Saturday October 18, 2014: Havana: Meet and interact with art students, teachers, and independent community artists during a visit of Fuster’s House to discuss the transformative effects of art on Cuban life. Lunch will be served here as well. This afternoon there is a quick stop in the fishing village of Cojimar, en route to Finca Vigia for a visit to Ernest Hemingway’s former residence. Tonight, you will enjoy a farewell dinner at the Hotel Nacional, and afterward a colorful musical revue at the Cabaret Parisién!
