JOINT LETTER FROM THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE
FOUNDATION PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
To infinity and beyond! So what do you do after you turn 50? You reflect and forge ahead planning the next 50 years! Buzz Lightyear, the astronaut character in the Pixar movie, Toy Story, said it best when he declared he would travel to infinity and beyond! And that’s just what the Lake Land College Foundation did in FY 19 as it began planning for the future of the Foundation. During the past five years, the Foundation has seen significant growth that includes a gift of 355 acres of farmland thanks to Wayne and the late Clara Borgic. Their gift of the family farm has had a profound effect on the Foundation and in turn, Lake Land College students. The Foundation took full ownership and operation of the Kramer Borgic Farm in FY19 and will use it for educational purposes in perpetuity as requested by the Borgics. THANK YOU! This report shares stories from those who understand the effect the Foundation can have and those who have chosen to be a part of it. You’ll meet Steve and Debbie Benefiel who started with small gifts many years ago and have now created an endowment. You’ll enjoy the story of retiree Dan Kelleher who understood the effect he had in the classroom and how he could continue to connect with students outside the classroom in the form of a scholarship. Like the Borgic’s, YOU have had an effect on the growth of the Foundation and specifically on 522 students through your gifts of scholarships. YOU have made the difference in those students reaching their educational goals that will affect the rest of their lives. With your continued investments, Lake Land College and the Foundation will travel toward infinity and beyond, effecting the lives of those we serve. THANK YOU!
Michael Bohannon, President Lake Land College Foundation

LETTER FROM THE
LAKE LAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends, This past year has been an exciting one for Lake Land College and the Foundation. After more than 20 years of planning for an expanded and renovated student center, we are nearing completion of the Luther Student Center project. The new center houses all Student Services offices, as well as Accounting, the Laker Nest Bookstore and the Police Department. The new center allows students to move seamlessly from department to department to receive the assistance they need. I hope you will make plans to visit campus and tour the Luther Student Center. Providing an excellent student experience is at the core of the newly renovated center and guides our work across the college community. We are pleased to have all of you as partners in our journey as we continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities to our community members and business partners. We have much to be proud of at Lake Land College! We excelled in the recent accreditation review by the Higher Learning Commission accrediting body. This spring a student engagement survey revealed 95% of our students said they would recommend Lake Land College to a friend or family member. Nursing Explorer, an online search site, named our nursing programs third in the state among 63 colleges. Thanks to your generosity, the Foundation continues to have a significant impact on students and the college community. Your giving inspires students to believe in themselves and work toward their goals. Your support of the college campus grounds and facilities enhances our Laker Pride and creates a welcoming environment for all. Our programs continue to evolve thanks to the support you provide through your gifts. Please know how grateful the Lake Land College Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students are to you for your selfless generosity. In this report, the foundation recognizes your numerous gifts and support that allow us to move forward together in changing the lives of our students and communities through the power of learning. Together, we are One Laker Nation! With gratitude,
Dr. Josh Bullock
President

Future
A PLAN FOR THE
OVER THE PAST SIX YEARS, the Lake Land College Foundation has experienced remarkable growth in its donor gifts and the assistance it is able to provide to students and the college. To establish an ongoing framework for continued support for donors and students, the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors recently undertook a strategic planning process. “The Foundation Board of Directors and staff have made great progress on these goals in a short time. We can already see the impact of the strategic plan and know that it will have a significant positive impact on students, the college and community in the future,” Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement, said.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
FOUNDATION ASSETS HAVE GROWN BY 88% IN THE PAST SIX YEARS MAKING A GREATER IMPACT IN THE FUTURE.
HERE ARE THE THREE GOALS: GOAL 1: PLAN FOR AN ADVANCEMENT CENTER BUILDING ON CAMPUS TO HOUSE ALUMNI AND FOUNDATION OPERATIONS. Members of a foundation ad hoc committee and administrators have been working with an architectural firm on renderings of the new building, which will be funded through the Burnham Neal Lead Trust. With the Laker Nest Bookstore relocated to the Luther Student Center, the old pole barn bookstore building can be demolished, paving the way for a beautiful center that will link inner campus to Alumni Park. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in spring 2020. The facility will serve as a welcoming center to alumni and guests of the Foundation and facilitate a connection between current students and the alumni office as they walk by on their way to class every day. The new center will also provide a central location for the College Advancement staff that includes foundation and alumni. Over the past two years, the staff have been housed in three separate buildings on campus.
GOAL 2: ENHANCE DONOR STEWARDSHIP EFFORTS BY DEVELOPING A FOUNDATION BRAND IDENTITY, INCREASE MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS, AND INCREASE BOARD MEMBER INVOLVEMENT. As a result of the stewardship and outreach ad hoc committee’s work, the Foundation now has an enhanced brand identity. The board adopted the tagline of “The Foundation Effect. Connect. Inspire. Give.” The new brand identity provides clear messaging and strategy for current board members as they engage with the community and prospective donors. In the next year, board members and staff will develop new outreach materials.
GOAL 3: IMPROVE PROCESS EFFICIENCIES TO IMPLEMENT A DONOR-FOCUSED MAJOR GIFT PROGRAM. The Foundation Board of Directors worked with consultants from eAdvancement to conduct an extensive program review of the Foundation and Alumni operations. The program review concluded the College Advancement office could benefit from a new organizational structure in order to facilitate a level of service required by the Foundation’s growth and meet the emerging needs of the college with regard to philanthropy, alumni engagement and scholarships. The operational analysis focused on recommendations that would provide the resources for the Foundation to undertake a major gift program by increasing efficiencies within the department. The three-year Foundation Strategic Plan provides an excellent framework for the Foundation to move forward and continue to impact the future of the Lake Land College community.
The renderings call for a large event room that will have glass doors that open onto Alumni Park. Events can be planned for guests to fluidly move between the beautiful park grounds and indoor room.

FORMER FACULTY MEMBER CREATES A
Lasting Legacy
WHEN DAN KELLEHER began his teaching career at Lake Land College in the early 1970s as a social science, history and anthropology instructor, he was unaware of the tremendous impact the college would have on his life and vice versa.
Kelleher was born in St. Louis in the late 1930s and grew up in a working class family as the oldest of five. Living paycheck to paycheck was not unusual during the war years and the postwar era in American history. Nevertheless, like many others at the time, he began working at a local factory before joining the United States Army. When the 1960s rolled around, Kelleher was well aware of his aspirations in life. He began pursuing his dream of teaching by enrolling at Southeastern Missouri State University (SEMO) to receive a bachelor’s degree in education. From there, Kelleher taught history and social studies at the high school level in both Missouri and Illinois for five years. In the meantime, Lake Land College opened its doors in 1966 to its first class of students. Four years later, Kelleher joined the Lake Land College Social Science and Education Division. He would spend the next

30 years introducing Lake Land College students to new philosophical views and historic events that shaped the modern world. Throughout his time at Lake Land, Kelleher raised a family and watched all four of his children pass through the curved halls of the college. “My career at Lake Land College was a tremendous opportunity for me. The college was, and still is, made up of pleasant people with pleasant surroundings,” Kelleher said. While teaching at Lake Land College, Kelleher introduced ground-breaking courses that proved to be highly enjoyable by his students. One course by the name of The Future took three different philosophical views to determine the human condition and how the future could potentially play out using those philosophies. Kelleher created a strong platform at Lake Land College as an instructor that challenged students. He is now using that platform to create a lasting legacy for the benefit of students for years to come.
It has now been 20 years since Kelleher has taught at Lake Land and during that time he has become more comfortable financially and incredibly aware of the difference he is able to provide for others by sharing his comfort. “In recent years I’ve become more aware of the Lake Land College Foundation. I felt it was time to give back to Lake Land for all that the college gave me including a career and a comfortable life, as well as what the college does for others,” Kelleher said. “The Foundation is a perfect vehicle for that.” Kelleher explained that his realization to give back to others while he is still around came from a book he recently read.
TWO SINGLE OR EXPECTANT PARENT STUDENTS WILL BE INSPIRED IN THE FIRST YEAR. THE ENDOWMENT WILL GROW & CONTINUE IN PERPETUITY.
“I learned two important lessons from the book. One, the only way you can ensure your money goes where you want it to go is to dispose of it while you’re still alive. Two, ‘it is a poor man that dies rich,’” Kelleher explained. “America is a wealthy country and the majority of us have the ability to dispose of our wealth by giving to organizations we feel passionate about and other worthy causes.” Currently, Kelleher lives in St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest European settlement in continental America. While enjoying the life that his lifelong hard work has given him, he actively encourages others to continuously seek out ways to dispose of their wealth.
By following his own guidance, Kelleher recently created an endowed scholarship in his late grandson’s name; The Dan Kelleher Memorial Scholarship in Memory of Sammy Kelleher. The scholarship is a need-based scholarship intended for expecting mothers or fathers or single parents attending Lake Land College. Kelleher’s investment in education at Lake Land College began by sharing his knowledge with Lake Land College students. Now, The Dan Kelleher Memorial Scholarship in Memory of Sammy Kelleher will continue to provide opportunities for students who often need the most financial assistance to better themselves and their family for years to come. “Dan Kelleher has created a lasting legacy for both himself and Sammy through the endowment that will go on to help many Lake Land College students. The criteria allows the scholarship to address an unmet need among our non-traditional students,” Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement, said. “Years of teaching have provided Dan with this unique vision in making a difference. The endowment is a true gift from the heart in so many ways.”

Podestá Park A tribute to a life of service.
The impact of our donors is evident everywhere on campus. One of the best examples of how the Foundation works with donors to make dreams become a reality is the newly created Dr. William L. & Margaret Podestá Park. Dr. William and Margaret Podestá were extremely generous to Lake Land College. Gifts from the Podestás, memorial gifts received upon their passing and a generous gift from their daughter, Mrs. Willie Podestá Young, have created a park that honors the significant generosity and giving spirit of the Podestás to Lake Land College and the community. The Dr. William L. & Margaret Podestá Park provides a wonderful space for students and staff to take a relaxing stroll, study in the sunshine or enjoy an inspiring piece of art. We thank the Podestá Family for creating a beautiful legacy on campus.

Big Impact
SMALL GIFTS MAKE A
Steve and Debbie Benefiel first crossed paths as undergraduate students at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. With several of the same interests and a desire to make the world around them a better place, Steve and Debbie were a perfect match. Their relationship with each other and the places they called home, would go on to benefit thousands around them whether that be through a small act of kindness or an endowed scholarship. Speaking with Steve and Debbie is like talking with old friends who have gone about their lives just as anyone else. However, the more you speak with them the more clear it is that they have done astonishing things with their time, energy and personal resources. Both Steve and Debbie have served on various boards and committees in which they have helped guide the direction of growth for the communities in which they live and the organizations they proudly serve. While maintaining their strong local roots and interests in organizations they are passionate about, the Benefiels actively seek out ways to contribute to education in the central Illinois area. Debbie has served on the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors since 1994 and has committed an astonishing amount of personal time and energy which contributes to the current strength of the Foundation. Debbie served on the Scholarship Committee for several years and enjoyed seeing nearly a third

of the student population receive scholarships annually totaling nearly $500,000. “Serving on the Lake Land College Foundation Board and the Scholarship Committee was a tremendous opportunity to step out beyond Paris and get regionally involved,” Debbie Benefiel said. For years, Steve and Debbie have graciously supported the Lake Land College Foundation with two annual scholarships; The Steve and Debbie Benefiel Annual Scholarship and The Pearman Pharmacy Annual Scholarship named after Pearman Pharmacy in Paris, owned and operated by Steve Benefiel.

Recently, the Benefiels decided to take the first step in making their contributions to the college a permanent investment by moving from an annual scholarship to an endowment: The Steve and Debbie Benefiel Endowed Scholarship.
“THE FIRST YEAR STEVE AND I DONATED...WE FELT REALLY GOOD ABOUT IT AND WANTED TO CONTINUE WITH THAT FEELING BY INCREASING OUR GIVING EACH YEAR.” - DEBBIE BENEFIEL
LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2019 ANNUAL REPORT
“We are strong believers in education, especially the power of community colleges and the impact they have on students who simply don’t know what they want to do right away,” Steve Benefiel said. In November of 2018, Steve and Debbie were recognized for their generosity as the recipients of the Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award presented by Horizon Health at the Association Fundraising Professionals National Philanthropy Day. The Benefiels’ nominator remarked that it is not unusual for the Benefiels to see an unmet need in the community, especially when someone is
“To the Benefiels, fundraising and helping others is simply a part of life. They genuinely want to give others the tools they need to help themselves in order to accomplish their own goals,” Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement, said. “They are both compassionate people who believe in helping. Everything they do comes from the heart.”
pursuing an education, and to meet that need personally. Throughout the years, the Benefiels have generously given their time to various organizations including the Presbyterian Church of Paris, Board of Deacons and the Membership and Evangelism Committee, the former Paris YMCA, now Paris REC Center, the Heritage Club, Paris Recreational Endowment Trust, Horizon Health Foundation of East Central Illinois, 100 Women Who Care of Edgar County, Illinois Poison Center and the Grains Club of the St. Louis School of Pharmacy Foundation. The Benefiels are also highly passionate about the performing arts and volunteer for related organizations to show their support. Steve and Debbie serve on the board of directors of the Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan as Region Three Trustees and have for more than 20 years. Steve serves on the advisory committee for the Paris Center of Fine Arts and served 17 years on the Paris Union School District 95 board.
Although the Benefiels have given to organizations in ways far beyond the average person, in the beginning, gifts to the college were small yet impactful.
THE BENEFIELS STARTED WITH SMALL GIFTS BUT HAVE IMPACTED THE LIVES OF NEARLY 45 STUDENTS SINCE THEIR FIRST GIFT IN 1994.
“The first year Steve and I donated, we donated $100. Although, it doesn’t sound like much, it was our first step in the direction that we were aiming,” Debbie Benefiel said. “We felt really good about it and wanted to continue with that feeling by increasing our giving each year.” “We highly encourage those that are looking to donate in any way they can to start young. There are several opportunities available to those who want to give, either through time, money or both,” Steve Benefiel said. “Small amounts of giving have life changing impacts on others, which come full circle and have life changing impacts on yourself.”
