JOINT LETTER FROM THE LAKE LAND COLLEGE
FOUNDATION PRESIDENT & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Your investment in the Lake Land College Foundation reinforces your belief in our mission and the students, faculty, staff and programs we support. And, as good stewards of your gifts, we want to THANK YOU for your investment in our mission. We are also pleased to share in this report the many ways folks like you are making a difference! This annual report introduces you to the late Dr. Lowell Massie, a local physician who, through his estate plan, invested in our students; students he will never meet, but believed in. You’ll also learn about a local hero, Shirley Clements who saved the lives of several patients during the St. Anthony Hospital fire in Effingham decades ago. See how her story continues to impact our students and how the community honors her memory. The report highlights an innovative partnership between the college and Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative, Inc. which motivated the co-op to make a greater investment in our students that not only impacts our students, but Coles-Moultrie and the communities it serves. And, the report shares the impact of foundation scholarships that demonstrates your return on investment. They are extraordinary stories about people who chose to support our students and their communities, and in the process, were changed themselves. Through your support, our vision of building brighter futures and stronger communities through education is being realized in the lives of students every day. A gift to the Lake Land College Foundation is one investment that guarantees a positive return!

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Jacqueline S. Joines, CFRE Executive Director for College Advancement
LETTER FROM THE
LAKE LAND COLLEGE PRESIDENT
Dear Friends, This year, perhaps more than any other year in our history, Lake Land College counted its blessings. As we united as a college family to overcome the challenges created by the state budget impasse, the value of our outstanding partnerships with individuals and organizations such as the Lake Land College Foundation became so very clear. So many in the Lake Land College community understood and joined us in our number one priority—maintain the high quality service and educational experience our students deserved. When that priority appeared to be jeopardized in Adult Education, the Lake Land College Foundation Board of Directors asked how it could help. The board agreed to fund the program so that the 180 GED and ESL students could continue pursuing their educational goals. While the college did receive limited federal funds to hold GED and ESL classes, the college was extremely grateful for the foundation’s pledge of support. As it became clear that the state would not fund the Monetary Award Program form of financial aid, your scholarship gifts to the Lake Land College Foundation made the difference in many students’ ability to remain enrolled in Lake Land College. When we created opportunities for organizations, businesses and individuals to give funds that met the needs of academic divisions and programs, you stepped forward. These gifts allow our faculty to introduce new technologies and teaching tools to our students to fully prepare them for the next step in their career or educational journey. As you can see, your gift extends beyond a financial investment. It is a pledge to join us in improving the lives of our students and the communities we serve. It is an investment. With you by our side we will continue moving forward. In this report, the Lake Land College Foundation recognizes your relationship with the college. Please know that we are grateful for your level of giving and your support as we continue to change the lives of our students through the power of learning. We are stronger together. We are One Laker Nation! Sincerely,
Dr. Josh Bullock

THE COOPERATIVE NATURE
OF CORPORATE INVESTMENTS Community businesses and organizations working together with Lake Land College share a common goal of creating an educated and skilled workforce. These partnerships, which generally take some time to establish, are highly beneficial to the businesses, the college, and the students involved. A strong need for workers in the fields of electrical, GIS, IT, and renewable energy within the next several years motivated ColesMoultrie Electric Cooperative to establish a scholarship with the Lake Land College Foundation. Sponsoring scholarships in innovation and technology fields encourages interested students and creates a pool of highly-trained, highly-skilled workers to meet the needs of regional cooperatives. The idea of establishing scholarships for Lake Land College students stemmed from a long-standing relationship between the two organizations, who have partnered on various projects over the past 10 years. For example, Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative was instrumental in securing supplemental funding from the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives for the college’s geothermal system installation. During the past year, however, the partnership has grown significantly. Kim Leftwich, president and CEO, began his tenure with ColesMoultrie Electric Cooperative in April 2015. In his past positions, he had worked with and knew the value gained from collaborating with community colleges. “Community colleges have great benefit, because they work very closely with their communities and their businesses to meet their needs. Not the colleges’ needs, but the businesses’ needs, and that’s a unique perspective,” Leftwich said. Leftwich initially met with President Josh Bullock to discuss the Cooperative’s interest in an avian protection program designed to minimize bird collisions with power lines while maintaining the efficiency of electrical delivery systems. Discussions then spread to relevant academic divisions and eventually evolved into a collaboration between the Cooperative and the college’s Geospatial Technology (GIS) certificate program.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Together, Coles-Moultrie and Lake Land are mapping an estimated 43,000 utility poles in the Cooperative’s 1,900-mile district. With the guidance of Mike Rudibaugh, geography/earth science instructor, two Lake Land College student interns have assisted Coles-Moultrie Electrical Cooperative technicians and IT consultants in this process through the use of the college’s state-of-the-art, hand-held GPS devices and mapping software. During an eight-week period, more than 17,000 utility poles had been mapped, and the team was working very efficiently due to that technology. “Lake Land College is very open … willing to consider taking off in alternative directions and finding new ways to provide service,” Leftwich explained. Utility cooperatives, like Coles-Moultrie, also place a priority on employing veterans. As a retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Air Force, Leftwich devotes a portion of his time working with the veterans’ programs at the college. The symbiotic relationship between Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative and Lake Land College continues to evolve, and Leftwich noted that future projects are on the horizon. “But that’s only the half of it,” said Leftwich. “We’re just getting started.”
COMMITTED TO ECONOMIC GROWTH Lake Land College works closely with area companies to develop new curriculum and create training programs that help meet the demand for a trained workforce. “We are committed to partnering with businesses and community leaders to assist in the economic growth of East Central Illinois,” Lake Land College President Josh Bullock said. The Center for Business & Industry plays a leading role in providing customized employee training and development services to regional employers. Services range from leadership development to electrical and manufacturing training. The Center for Business & Industry served 25 area business and provided customized training to more than 225 employees. Most recently, the college created a new organizational unit to focus on educational partnerships and programs. The Office of Workforce Solutions and Community Education is designed to respond to the needs of area businesses and communities while positioning the college for expansion into new areas. This office will look beyond the traditional classroom delivery models to develop new training opportunities for private and government entities.

SHIRLEY CLEMENTS
KEEPING A HEROINE’S MEMORY ALIVE TO INSPIRE FUTURE NURSES Shirley Clements was not supposed to be working in St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital on the night of April 5, 1949. She had resigned from her nursing post, effective the previous Tuesday, but with nursing shortages, she was asked to fill in. At 11 p.m. that night, an inferno encompassed the entirety of the Effingham hospital, killing 76 patients and staff, most of them women and children, ultimately including Clements. She passed away a heroine, repeatedly going back into the flameengulfed building to save as many others as she could.
Memorial Scholarship learn of her professional integrity. Clements pursued nursing during World War II, following the call of her country that was engaged in battle overseas. She signed up for the Army Nursing Corp, but she was young enough that by the time she graduated, the war was over. After graduating from St. Elizabeth’s in Granite City, she married and moved to Effingham where she began working at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital. While she loved her profession, Clements decided to follow a more traditional role and stay at home with her 9-month-old daughter, Michell.
In this photo on display in the museum, Michell Clements was 9 months old at the time of her mother’s death.
Her courageous acts are what led Linda Ruholl, PhD., RN, nurse historian and retired Lake Land College instructor, to memorialize Clements by establishing a scholarship with the Lake Land College Foundation.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT
She had just submitted her resignation when tragedy struck one night in April that cost Clements her life.
Now, nearly 70 years later, her legacy lives on at the Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum and Lake Land College. Jackie Joines, executive director for college advancement at Lake Land College, said the two tributes are perfectly aligned. “The foundation is honored to be able to keep Shirley Clements’ memory alive through the annual scholarship endowment. I was fortunate enough to attend the

all of us with much needed closure,” Dupske said. “My children and grandchildren now have a place for their grandmother to be remembered for what she did. “I am very grateful that the museum has my mother’s life on display. It makes me very proud to say she was my mom.” Dupske said her only regret is that her dad did not live long enough to enjoy this tribute. “He told me he never stopped loving and missing my mom.” With her heroism preserved through the museum display and a memorial scholarship, Ruholl hopes that Clement’s story will inspire others to pursue nursing as a profession. “Lake Land College is about access, affordability and an opportunity to get an education,” Ruholl said. “If we can help provide that through
this scholarship and memorialize a heroine, then we will already have done so much for the future of nursing.” Dupske said she hopes the scholarship will help nursing students realize their profession is about more than a career. “I hope the scholarship recipients are as fortunate as my mom to find their passion for nursing as opposed to just working a job.” Ruholl is just one of many donors who have established an endowment or scholarship in honor of an esteemed colleague or loved one. “By honoring the legacy of a hero or a successful professional in your industry you keep their integrity and memory alive by inspiring our students to achievement the same level of accomplishment,” Joines added.
Dupske, who also gives to the Lake Land College Foundation said she is moved by the college and community’s support of her mother. When approached, Dupske said she was glad to donate everything she had left of her mother — photos, certificates, pins and the rosary she clenched in her fist as she jumped, and that still smells of smoke — to the museum for others to admire her heroic acts. Ruholl and the museum volunteers created a permanent display telling the young nurse’s story in the Effingham County Cultural Center and Museum. Dupske said the dedication of the display was a meaningful day for her and her family. “My mom’s sisters had a feeling of peace seeing mom’s items on display. It gave them a chance to grieve outwardly and it provided
Having a tribute to their mother, sister and grandmother was very meaningful to the family of Shirley Clements. The tribute was attended by her daughter, Michell Dupske, her four grandchildren and their families which include six great grandchildren (plus one more on the way). Clements’ sister Louis “Tiny” Loyet and her daughter were also able to attend the dedication at the museum. Clements’ other sister, Carol Priola, who lives in Denver attended via Skype.

LAKE LAND COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2016 ANNUAL REPORT
Dr. Lowell “Doc” Massie was a humble man
with a passion for medicine who treasured his family, God, gardening and fishing. He lived through a time where he witnessed and experienced many changes in medicine, a field he practiced in for more than 50 years as a family physician, residing in Toledo, Ill. Two of his daughters, Carolyn Hayden and Linda Shull, said they knew their father through many of his interests, but his love of family and dedication as a doctor were the qualities they knew best. It was after his death in 2011 they discovered how much he gave in service to his patients and his community. He was business-like and professional, always wore a suit and shined shoes at home, in church and at the office. He even wore old suits and shoes to garden and fish. No matter how hard he worked, Sundays were set aside for church and family. “Doc” grew up in Toledo, son of a veterinarian, and had his roots
in the rural life, with farming and raising cows. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1937, and graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago in 1940. He returned to Toledo with his wife, Nellie Berry, and established a clinic, the Rhodes Clinic, with Dr. Walter Rhodes, whom he admired. When a community college was proposed in 1965, Massie was a strong advocate, according to his daughters. “He was such a big supporter of Lake Land,” Shull said. “He thought a community college would be like a bridge between a small high school and a bigger college.” Shull reminisced on her father’s dedication to service, “I think he was called to it,” she said. He would make house calls, often with one of his four children who would sometimes drive him, other times go along to keep him company and awake, to make calls in the country.
Dr. Lowell “Doc” Massie was a devoted family man. His daughters have fond memories of their father’s dedication to his family and his profession. Pictured left to right are Margaret Kellogg, Linda Shull and Carolyn Hayden. Their brother Curtis Massie is not pictured.

“This is how I learned to drive,” Shull said. She also recalled the 2,500 babies he delivered over the years of his practice. Hayden and Shull remembered the polio scare of the early 50’s before the Salk vaccine. Hayden recalls her father coming home, after one of his young patients died, and waking up all his kids to make sure they were all right. Shull remembers him giving the first shots of the vaccine at the Toledo Grade School. Massie’s wife Nellie was his rock and main comforter throughout all his years of practicing medicine. “I miss him” Shull said, tearfully. “But he couldn’t have done it without Mom. You hear about the woman behind the man, and that was Mom. They were a team.” In 1987, Massie was named Illinois Family Physician of the Year.
In 1995 he received the Soaring Eagle Award from the Sarah Bush Lincoln Foundation for his strong support of the regional health care facility. Massie’s children, Shull, Hayden, Margaret Kellogg and Curtis Massie, said he never wanted any recognition for his generosity when he was still alive, but today he leaves a legacy. With his estate gift to the Lake Land College Foundation invested as an endowment, his memory will stay alive for years to come. With his generous gift of $100,000, the Lake Land College Foundation will be able to award students with allied health scholarships for years to come, starting in the fall of 2017. “Massie named the Lake Land College Foundation as a beneficiary in a trust managed by First-Mid Illinois Bank & Trust, and the bank took care of the rest from there,” said Jacqueline Joines, executive director for college advancement.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HONORED WITH FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
Each spring, hundreds of future Lake Land College students are honored at their schools’ annual awards night.

At least 34 percent of our students are low-income and 61 percent are first-
