CONNECTIONS AND EXPERIENCES
Agriculture is an international industry and Courtney Wallace, a Class of 2023 Bachelor of Agriculture Technology (BAgTech) graduate, saw that firsthand during her Lakeland studies.
She attended the 2022 European Federation of Animal Science Conference in Porto, Portugal to present the findings of a research project she was involved with through her practicum at OneCup AI.
Her experience has profoundly impacted how she sees science and technology applied to precision livestock farming.
It’s changed how I view not only the agriculture industry but also the requirements we expect from students to be able to handle research projects and technologies,” Courtney explains. “It’s so important to bring those research projects and technologies to producers. We can give them more effective tools to make the industry more sustainable.”
A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY.
The future of agriculture is technology. Study the cutting-edge developments in agriculture without neglecting the roots of production in our industry-driven programs.
You’ll immerse yourself in real-world learning situations, like managing a crop or livestock enterprise, providing needed animal care, hosting and participating in industry events, and more.
Our 3,700-acre StudentManaged Farm – Powered by New Holland provides extensive opportunities to learn by doing. Combined with our innovative facilities such as Animal Health Clinic, Agriculture Technology
Centre, Dairy Learning Centre, Equine Centre and G.N. Sweet Livestock Research Facility, you’ll develop a breadth of knowledge that will set you up for a successful career.

TAKING ON A LEADING ROLE. LEAVING A LASTING IMPRESSION
Jay Shah is taking over the business world one cup of coffee at a time, and it all started at Lakeland College.
Jay, a second-year Business Administration Accounting major student from India, named his business Nooks&Books Café. He got to work creating and taste testing different flavours for his coffee, sharing them with friends, instructors and the community. He took their feedback, refined his process, and pitched his business at Lakeland’s Finding the U in Business event in 2022.
Jay kept up with the project, providing coffee to different events, making contacts, and expanding his network. In December 2022, he got his big break – an opportunity to pitch his business at Startup Lloydminster’s Titus Tools Gamechanger Pitch Event.
Jay and two other local entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas, competing for a $500 prize, with a twist. After their pitches, all three were awarded $500, as well as a $2,500 investment in their businesses and $1,000 of Startup Lloydminster coaching and services.
Prepare yourself for a career in the fast-paced world of business. With a variety of programs and majors, we’ve got the quick start you’re looking for or the more in-depth study you need.
Work with real clients and make industry contacts. This is your time to explore different subjects and uncover new interests while surrounded by people who are here to help.
Hands-on opportunities include joining the Business case competition team, participating in a co-op program, assisting in free tax clinics, planning the
annual Inspiring Women Conference and more.
Not sure which path to take? Our academic advisor will help you plot your course to achieve your business goals.

The instructors are so helpful. They’re willing to talk and engage with you. I’ve been to university, too, and it can be harder to approach instructors there. Here, if you have any problems, you can go to the instructors and they’re willing to help. It’s nice to be able to do hands-on and see everything in action. I have a mechanical engineering degree and there wasn’t a lot of hands-on application to that. It’s nice to learn about the concepts in the classroom and then go to the lab and see them. It reaffirms what we learned in class.”

MIND-BLOWING opportunities
When new Environmental Sciences diploma graduate Nathaniel Hak toured Lakeland, he quickly realized he had found the right school.
I was instantly hooked by the idea that I could complete my program outdoors, and that my education did not have to be defined by a classroom,” Nathaniel explains. “The Wildlife and Fisheries Conservation major allowed me to gain experience in my field that directly translates to the real world. It has been awesome to take what I’ve learned in the outdoor labs and apply those concepts to my career.”
GET INDUSTRY EXPERIENCE.
Make a difference in the natural world around you. Whether conserving, rehabilitating, or advocating, you’ll leave the classroom behind and learn in the fields, forests, rivers and wetlands on and around campus.
Learn to understand the natural environment, how to protect it, how to reclaim it, and how to ensure our industries can function sustainably within it.
Looking to open the door to a career in sustainable energy? We’ve got a program for that too!
Whether you see yourself hard at work on
reclamation projects or immersed in protecting and improving the local ecosystem, there’s an environmental sciences program – and career path – for you.
During the summer of 2023, Nathaniel worked for Nature Saskatchewan in his hometown of Regina, Sask., where the conservation skills he acquired at Lakeland were of great use. He transferred his Lakeland credits to the University of Regina where he’s completing a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology.

On the FRONT LINES
Being a firefighter means dropping everything the moment a call for help comes in. Emergency Services Technology fire stream students experienced that firsthand in spring 2023 when Parkland County requested support dealing with an out-of-control wildfire near Entwistle, Alta.
Working hands-on in the field with other fire departments during a provincial emergency was certainly an eye-opening experience to work on new skills, to come together as a team, and to achieve the real-world experience a Lakeland education is known for.
It was surreal getting to work with all those other fire departments,” student Zachary Gould says. “We got to learn so much about wildland firefighting. There are a thousand different ways that you can do something right in the fire service. It was great to learn new techniques in order to stay safe and do your best to keep the fire under control.”
TRAIN TO BE AT THE FOREFRONT.
Prepare for an exciting career in emergency response. You’ll take classroom theory and apply it to real life scenarios at our training facility, the Emergency Training Centre. It’s one of the top training facilities in North America.
You’ll fight multi-level structure fires in our fire tower, learn to control wildland fires and master rope rescue. You’ll make critical decisions on the go as you learn to follow orders and lead
a battalion, responding to vehicle collisions and extricating patients. You’ll practice the protocol of dangerous goods clean up and responding to medical emergencies.
The hours of live
scenarios on our training fields are what sets learning at Lakeland apart from the rest.

in academics
Coming from a small town, Alana Olson was worried she’d be lost in a larger postsecondary school. At Lakeland, she found that college could be more than a place to excel in athletics and academics – she found it was a place to belong.
READY FOR THE REAL WORLD. EXCELLING
By starting her post-secondary education in University Transfer, Alana has grown her confidence and built foundational skills she’ll use beyond Lakeland as she continues to work towards her goal of becoming a physician.
Lakeland was the perfect environment for me to transition from high school to post-secondary. Increasing my involvement in the campus and community allowed me to gain a deeper appreciation for everything Lakeland offers students. The professors I have taken classes from are not only incredibly skilled in their fields, but they are also approachable and personable.”
Take foundational steps towards your degree. Whether you’re looking to ease the transition from high school to university, save on tuition, or explore your options, University Transfer has the university-level courses you need.
Start your post-secondary career in smaller classes with instructors who care and know you by name. You can earn credits towards your degree with us and then transfer to another institution, or

HANDS-OFF WITH BISON
Walker Balan and Wylee Squair completed their Bachelor of Agriculture Technology practicum placements with Lakeland’s Applied Research team. Their focus was finding hands-off ways to monitor and work with bison. They used technologies such as drones, infrared cameras, and a remote walk-over weigh scale.
Every time you physically work with bison, it sets them back in production.
We are trying to take away the stresses and setbacks that come with physically handling bison,” says Walker.
Wylee and Walker attended the International Bison Convention in Saskatoon in July 2022 and shared research information with attendees. They participated in a poster contest, competing against master’s and PhD students. Wylee placed first for his poster on the drone-monitoring project. Walker was third with his poster about the walk-over weigh scale for monitoring bison performance.
