You’ve been accepted to Lakeland: What you should do next

1. Pay your deposit

• A $1,500 non-refundable deposit holds your seat. Your acceptance letter will tell you when it’s due.

• It is easy to pay your tuition deposit, program fees, residence application fee, or residence rent fees. Use flywire at https://payment.flywire.com/pay/payment. Flywire allows you to pay securely from almost any country and any bank, typically in your home currency, and allows you to track your payment through email or text notifications.

• Payment of your tuition deposit will initiate the request for your Provincial Attestation Letter. Once we receive the Provincial Attestation Letter, it will be emailed to you.

• You will not receive a Provincial Attestation Letter if you have requested one from another institution. Do not pay your tuition deposit if you have requested a Provincial Attestation Letter from another institution.

• Failure to pay the tuition deposit on time will result in the cancellation of your admission.

• The tuition deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable to future terms.

2. Learn the details of your program choice

• Review your program details and course descriptions to ensure it is the right fit. To find this information select your program from the A to Z program listing on our website. If you discover that your program choice is not suited to you, please let us know. If there is space in another program beginning the same term and you are qualified, you may be able to switch.

• Applicants are eligible for one program change request before Registration Day.

3. Accommodation (MANDATORY)

• If you would like to live on campus, you must apply and pay the required fees. Since residence accommodations are limited, we strongly recommend that you apply as soon as possible. A link to our online application system is in your acceptance email. See the Residence page for more info

• Our communities offer various rental opportunities. Please visit website for other housing options.

4. Get your study permit/visa

• As a part of your study permit application, you may be required to pay more than just the deposit fee. Your letter will include the total amount payable for first and second semester.

• Email your study permit approval to international@lakelandcollege.ca by the due date in your acceptance letter.

• Failure to meet this condition will cancel your admission. Apply for your study permit early!

5. Do you need a Co-op work permit?

• Some programs require a study permit and a co-op work permit. Your admission letter will indicate if you need both. This will be issued when you enter Canada. Be sure to ask the border official who processes your study permit to also issue a work permit. For some programs, you will need this permit within a few weeks of beginning classes and you may not receive it in time if you only apply after you begin studies.

6. Practicums (work placements)

• Practicums are a valuable opportunity to gain work experience and are mandatory for graduation.

• Practicums take place in real workplaces off campus. Most students are not paid for the work they do while on practicum.

• Getting to your work placement is your responsibility. Neither of our campus locations have public transportation (bus service). We cannot guarantee that your workplace practicum will be within walking distance Sometimes, practicums can be in a different community from your campus and may require you to relocate for a short period of time.

7. You need an original police clearance certificate if you are in Human Services or Health Care Aide.

• This original police clearance certificate is a legal requirement to go on practicum- you can not work with children or start practicum without it.

• Your acceptance letter will tell you if you need to request this from your home country.

• Police clearances must be done no more than 3 months before the start of your program.

8 Health Insurance

• International students are required to have adequate health insurance coverage before registration day.

• Lakeland College has arranged health insurance coverage. The fees are included in your program fees.

• Coverage begins 14 days before registration day and will be emailed to you at the end of September.

9. Your “MyLakeland” Account

• On our website, there is a guide to using the My Lakeland tiles in your portal. It includes an overview of the information each tile includes, as well as popular questions and answers to assist in navigating your My Lakeland Portal.

10. Textbooks and Supplies

• All programs at Lakeland have specialized supplies/equipment you will need to purchase.

• You will receive an email with a link to your supply lists.

• We recommend you wait until the first week of classes to purchase your textbooks.

11. Driver’s License

• Although a drivers license is not a requirement to attend Lakeland, you may need one for employment or practicum.

• Obtain an international driving permit (IDP) before you leave your home country so you’re able to drive in Canada. For more information on obtaining a Canadian driver’s license, go to the Service Alberta website.

12 Attend International Orientation- MANDATORY

• Lakeland organizes an orientation event for all international students. Attendance is mandatory.

• You will be emailed information about the date and time.

• Book your flight to arrive at least the day before this required event.

13. Refund Policy

• If your study permit is denied, you may be eligible for a $1,000 partial refund of the tuition deposit. ($500 is not refundable) and a full refund of your remaining program fees.

• To be eligible for the partial tuition deposit refund, send a Refund Request Form, with proof of denial or copy of Attestation Letter from another institution. This form and document must be submitted within 4 weeks of the date on your denial letter and within 4 weeks after registration day. Please email admissions@lakelandcollege.ca if this happens to you.

• If you decide not to attend Lakeland College, please email international@lakelandcollege.ca or admissions@lakelandcollege.ca. We will refund program and tuition fees, less the full $1,500 non-refundable tuition deposit.

• We do not defer applications or tuition deposits.
