How to Make Working from Home “Work” With the spread of COVID-19, many people have been encouraged or are required to work from
home. This type of remote working is new for many and may require a change of habits and routines to make working from home both successful and enjoyable. Here are some helpful tips to guide you as you transition to working remotely:
1. Start with a Morning Routine: Perfecting your morning routine can really help you make the most of your work day.
Try to wake up at the same time everyday, take time to eat a proper breakfast, have a coffee, exercise and begin the work day at the same time every morning.
2. Maintain a Regular Schedule: Try to set a work schedule and stick to it. By creating a guideline for work hours, it helps remote workers maintain work-life balance.
3. Schedule Breaks: Give yourself adequate time during the day to walk away from the computer screen and phone. Take breaks to clear your mind.
4. Make a Dedicated Office Space or Room: Start by designating a space specifically for work. While the ideal option
would be an area that is physically separate from the rest of your home, that may not always be possible. You do need to have a place that you associate with work, that is comfortable and that allows you to be productive. You may have to set up another area if you are required to make work calls in the event that other family members are in the home too.
5. Minimize Distractions from Others: It is easy to get caught up or deal with interruptions from family. If your kids or
spouse are also at home while you are trying to work, you will need to set some rules and get your family onboard. Talk with them about giving you the space and time you need to do your work. Set up a signal system that tells your family when it is ok to interrupt and when it isn’t.
6. Leave Your Workspace: It is beneficial to get up and away from your workspace during the day. In a normal day, you
likely move away from your desk to connect with colleagues or take a lunch break. Continue this same process at home. If you are able to get outside while maintaining social distancing, you may want to venture out to move, get some fresh air and natural light. This can be as simple as going into the backyard to stretch or taking a walk around the block. If it is not possible to get outside, you must make sure to leave your workspace to give yourself a break. Get up and move to a different part of your house to stretch or another type of movement. Your body and mind will thank you.
7. Stay Connected with Coworkers: Working in isolation can lead to loneliness and feeling disconnected. It is a good idea if you can find ways to stay connected and socialize with coworkers. Using a group or video chat allows employees to connect about work but is also a place to share stories, laugh and interact as if you were in the same office together. It is a great way to support one another through this challenging time.
8. Set daily goals, track them and share your progress: Start each day by writing down what you need to achieve and then track your progress. Communicate regularly with your team and supervisor on your progress with your goals. If you are working on team goals or tasks, don’t be afraid to over communicate. Remote working requires a lot of communication!
