You’ve been accepted to Lakeland: What you should do next 1. Pay your deposit • A $1,500 non-refundable deposit holds your seat. Your acceptance letter will tell you when it’s due. • It is easy to pay your tuition deposit, program fees, residence application fee, or residence rent fees. Use flywire at https://payment.flywire.com/pay/payment. Flywire allows you to pay securely from almost any country and any bank, typically in your home currency, and allows you to track your payment through email or text notifications. • The tuition deposit is non-refundable and non-transferable to future terms. 2. Changed your mind about your program choice? • Review your program details and course descriptions to ensure it is the right fit. Select your program on our website. If you discover that your program choice is not suited to you, please let us know. If there is space in another program beginning the same term and you are qualified, you may be able to switch. • The deadline to request to change your program choice is 8 weeks before Registration Day. After the deadline, you will not be able to switch programs. 3. Apply for residence (optional) • If you would like to live on campus, you must apply and pay the required fees. Since residence accommodations are limited, we strongly recommend that you apply as soon as possible. A link to our online application system will be in your acceptance email. • Lakeland does not offer short term, on campus accommodation. The minimum residence stay is one semester. Semester rent fees are due the day you move in. • Residence needs a minimum of 3 business days to process an application. 4. Get your study permit/visa • As a part of your study permit application, you may be required to pay more than just the deposit fee. Your letter will include the total amount payable for first and second semester. • Email your study permit approval to international@lakelandcollege.ca by the due date in your acceptance letter. 5. Do you need a work permit? •
Some programs require a study permit and a work permit. Your admission letter will indicate if you need a work permit. This will be issued when you enter Canada. Be sure to ask the border official who processes your study permit to also issue a work permit. For some programs, you will need the work permit within a few weeks of beginning classes and you may not receive it in time if you only apply after you begin studies.
6. Practicums (work placements) • Practicums are a valuable opportunity to gain work experience and are mandatory for graduation. • Practicums take place in real workplaces off campus. Most students are not paid for the work they do while on practicum. • Getting to your work placement is your responsibility. Neither of our campus locations have community public transportation (bus service). We cannot guarantee that your workplace practicum will be within walking distance. Sometimes, practicums can be in a different community from your campus and may require you to relocate for a short period of time. • Some programs require an original police clearance certificate as a legal requirement to go on practicum. Your acceptance letter will tell you if you need to request this from your home country.
7. Health Insurance • International students are required to have adequate health insurance coverage before registration day. • Lakeland College has arranged health insurance coverage. The fees are included in your program fees. • Coverage begins 14 days before registration day. • If you wish to purchase additional coverage for you or your family members, please visit the GuardMe microsite. • Your international student support coordinator will contact you in September with your insurance e-card. 8. Your “MyLakeland” Account • Username and password access to your MyLakeland account will be emailed to you approximately 1 month before registration day. • By registration day, you will have access to view your class schedule, account balance and fees. Once classes start, your grades will be found here too. • Some programs have elective courses. Should you wish to change your elective courses, please see the academic advisor after registration day. 9. Proof of Enrolment •
If you require a letter confirming your enrolment status, including the program name, dates and cost, please email admissions@lakelandcollege.ca with your full name, student ID number, program and year of study. Please allow 2-4 business days for processing.
10. Textbooks and Supplies • All programs at Lakeland have specialized supplies/equipment you will need to purchase. • An updated program supply list will be available on our website one month before registration day. • We recommend you wait until first week of classes to purchase your textbooks. 11. Driver’s License •
A driver’s license is not required to enroll at Lakeland College. However, you may want to consider getting one. If you choose to live off campus, have to travel to your practicum or simply want to explore your new community, having a driver’s license and a car is helpful. In addition, when you want to find a job, having a valid driver’s license can be a condition of employment. 12. Attend International Orientation • • • •
Lakeland organizes an orientation event for all international students. Attendance is mandatory. You will be emailed information about the date and time. Please book your flight to arrive at least the day before this required event. For more information on travelling to Lakeland College, please see our website.
13. Refund Policy • • •
If your study permit is denied, you may be eligible for a $1,000 partial refund of the tuition deposit. ($500 is not refundable) and a full refund of your remaining program fees. To be eligible for the partial tuition deposit refund, send a Refund Request Form, with proof of denial. This form and document must be submitted within 4 weeks of the date on your denial letter and within 4 weeks after registration day. Please email admissions@lakelandcollege.ca if this happens to you. If you decide not to attend Lakeland College, please email international@lakelandcollege.ca or admissions@lakelandcollege.ca. We will refund program and tuition fees, less the full $1,500 nonrefundable tuition deposit.
