Welcome to Lakeland College When Lakeland College opened in 1913, there were only 34 students enrolled. Today we have two campuses and over 8,000 full-time and part-time students --- but remains as tight-knit as ever. Smaller class sizes, on-campus accommodations, student activities, and a caring faculty and staff help to carry on the tradition.

We are very pleased to present to you the graduating class of 2010. Today’s ceremony includes candidates for graduation in our applied degree, diploma and certificate programs at the Vermilion Campus and in Edmonton. It also includes those who have completed distance education studies from across Canada.

Graduates from our Lloydminster campus programs will be honoured next week at the Vic Juba Community Theatre on June 4, 2010.

We invite you to take a few moments to explore our campus grounds and facilities. Lakeland College is proud to be one of several community partners that initiated the construction of the Vermilion Regional Centre completed in 2008. On campus, construction is well underway to build a new Student Activity Centre, renewal of the Applied Engineering Building and renovate the library and front entrance of Alumni Hall.

The college also continues to renovate the Vermilion Campus Residence Village.

Distinguished Alumni Award Beginning with this year’s convocation ceremonies, Lakeland College has chosen to recognize alumni who have earned distinguished career success, modeled leadership and community service, or have been formally recognized with one or more national or international honours, major championships or appointment to high office.

At today’s ceremony we recognize the Honorable Robert C. McLeod.

Robert C. McLeod Mr. McLeod was born and educated in the Northwest Territories. He attended New Brunswick Community College and Lakeland College where he obtained his journeyman carpenter certification and interprovincial red seal in 1989.

First elected as a councilor in Aklavik from 1983 to 1985, Mr. McLeod was also mayor of Aklavik from 1987 to 1989. In 2004 he was elected to the 15th Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories as the Member for Inuvik Twin Lakes. He was re-elected in October 2007. Mr. McLeod served on the standing committee on social programs during the 15th Legislative Assembly and served as chair of the standing committee on social programs during the 16th Legislative Assembly until his election to the Executive Council on October 6, 2008.

Mr. McLeod has served on a volunteer basis with the executive of the Inuvik Curling Club, the Aklavik Canoe Club and the Aklavik Curling Club. He has been a player, coach and manager of the Aklavik hockey and fastpitch teams. He was a recipient of the NWT Volunteer Award and the Good Neighbour Award.

Mr. McLeod and Judy, his wife of 30 years, have three children: Ryan, Janesta, and Kimberly (Raymond). Mr. McLeod has two grandchildren, Rylan and Reese Wainman, his pride and joy.

Award Presentations President’s Medal The most prestigious award given by Lakeland College, the President’s Medal is awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated excellence in academics and leadership in student activities. Each President's Medal is numbered and embossed with the crest of Lakeland College. This year's number is 41.

Nominations came from all facets of the College including faculty, support staff and students, and are reviewed by the Awards Committee with a recommendation made to the President.

This year’s recipient is Kirk James Kiesman, graduate of the Animal Science Technology program at the Vermilion Campus.

Governor General’s Medal The Governor General's Medal was established in 1873 and is awarded to the student who graduates with the highest academic standing in a diplomalevel post-secondary program. This medal is numbered and engraved with the Crest of the Royal Arms of Canada. The recipient will be registered with the Chancellery of Canadian Orders and Decoration at Rideau Hall, Ottawa.

This award is presented to Chelsea Anne Gatzke, graduate of the Conservation and Restoration Technology program at the Vermilion Campus.

Alumni Tradition Once convocation is over, students leave Lakeland College and become alumni. They were part of our history as students, perpetuators, and generators of the traditions and customs that mean so much, and they continue to be part of our history as alumni. As one alumni once said, “The Alumni Association continues where the yearbook left off.�

Through the pages of alumni newsletters, and through social gatherings in many places, alumni keep in touch with new generations of students following old traditions, and establish traditions of their own. Through our alumni the customs and traditions are kept alive. Without them Lakeland College could not be what it is. It would only be a shell, a place of mere function.

Instead, the thread of human history runs through it and gives it life.
