EVER TO EXCEL Pursuing excellence is an essential touchstone for Lakeland College. Student James Allanach suggested “Ever to Excel” in 1928 as the school’s motto. The motto has stood the test of time. It’s a testament to our roots and a nod to our enterprising spirit. It’s meant being responsive to the needs of generations of students, community and industry. Whenever and wherever Lakeland graduates realize their goals and embody our shared values, our motto is fulfilled.

Lakeland College is located on traditional Treaty 6 territory and Region 2 of the MĂŠtis Nation of Alberta. Lakeland acknowledges that Indigenous Peoples are the first peoples of our country and honours and respects the history and roots of this nation.

Our Vision We have a plan for what Lakeland will be in 2030. Four goals frame our work and key milestones will mark our progress as we bring Vision 2030 to life. This plan is about rural sustainability and best serving our students, alumni, employers and the region. We will concentrate our efforts on student belongingness, student-managed learning, raising our profile and resourcing our future. Innovation is a must. And courage is required – courage to stay the path and say no to opportunities that don’t match our areas of focus. Because when we bring focus to our work, we can accomplish great things.

Dr. Sean Lessard is an Indigenous education champion. He’s dedicated his life’s work to improving the lives and experiences of Indigenous youth. Dr. Lessard was born on the Montreal Lake Cree Nation and later adopted by a family in North Battleford, Sask. He graduated from Lakeland’s rehabilitation services program in 1994 and was a member of the Rustlers men’s volleyball program. He later studied at the University of Alberta, earning a bachelor of education in 2000, a master of educational psychology in 2009, and a doctorate of elementary education and teaching in 2012. Dr. Lessard is an associate professor secondary education at the University of Alberta, in Indigenous education and teacher education. He’s also the CEO of his own company – Name to Place Educational and Community Consulting. Dr. Lessard’s commitment to Indigenous youth has earned him the Canadian Education Association’s Pat Clifford Award and the Myer Horowitz Outstanding Dissertation Award.

RELEVANT PROGRAMMING AND RESEARCH Student-Managed Learning Program Quality | Labour Market Alignment | Flexible and Student-Centred | Innovative Research Lakeland College transforms learners into leaders through student-managed enterprises, events and experiences. Innovative and quality programs, which are aligned with labour market needs, offer flexible access to studentcentred pathways. With faculty mentors, students work alongside industry partners to conduct research aligned with industry needs. Research efforts support our programming and the results are of interest to people and industry throughout Canada.
