As the Club begins the celebration of its 50th year, we thought it might be interesting to take a look back at how it all began. According to Lake Naomi – Timber Trails Real Estate Broker Carl Fiers, Jr. it all began during the Winter of 1961-62 when a couple from Stroudsburg wintered on the west coast of Florida at a resort complex owned by Carl’s parents. Carl’s mother, Mary, always chatted with the guests to make them feel at home. Upon learning that this guest was a Real Estate Broker in Stroudsburg, Mary mentioned that her son Carl was also a Real Estate Broker involved with an old high school chum, Logan Steele, and his father, Robert Steele, in two small vacation communities located in Sussex County in Northwestern, New Jersey. When Carl arrived in Florida he spoke with the Real Estate Broker from Stroudsburg who indicated he knew of a property that would make a great vacation community in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. Carl arranged a meeting for the Spring when all returned from Florida. Interstate 80 wasn’t completed at the time, so they had to use Route 611 through Mount Pocono to get to Pocono Pines. Upon arrival at the intersection of Routes 940 and 423 the trio found an abandoned used car lot complete with several rusty cars and a string of clear electric light bulbs running along both highways for about 200 feet. After standing on the dam at the west end of the lake off Route 423 and absorbing the pristine loveliness of Lake Naomi, they concluded that all the negatives could be overcome and that they should attempt to acquire the property from Irene Gross and one hundred percent of the lake rights which were owned by the Gross, Miller and Waygood Families. It reportedly wasn’t an easy transaction to consummate as the Gross, Miller and Waygood Families had very deep roots in Lake Naomi and turning it over to this New Jersey Group required a great deal of soul searching. In the end the sale was completed and the development of the property began. Logan Steele incorporated the Lake Naomi Club on November 4, 1963 and the first property from the Lake Naomi Corporation was sold to Dr. and Mrs. Vincent Hohl on May 11, 1964. Since then Carl Fiers, his brother Tom and Lake Naomi Real Estate have been involved in the initial sale of every property in Lake Naomi and Timber Trails. Carl Fiers, age 84, continues to actively market and sell the Lake Naomi and Timber Trails Community. Talking with him one can tell that his zeal for Lake Naomi - Timber Trails has not changed since that Spring day in 1962 when he stood on the dam with Logan and Robert Steele and looked at that priceless lake and they envisioned the generations of family memories that would be developed over the next 50 years.
