Lake Naomi Club Lauded in National Poll
The following article written by Wayne Witkowski appeared in the Pocono Record on Sunday, October 18th. Lake Naomi Club in Pocono Pines has been selected to the Platinum Club of America, an award conferred to the top 235 private clubs from among 6,000 clubs nationwide. The elite selection compares to the Mobil five-star ratings. Lake Naomi has 2,000 homes over 3,000 acres. “It’s a great honor for our community. I said to the members that they have long realized we were a platinum residential community club. Now it has been made official and the entire country is aware of it,” said general manager Jeff Evans. Evans pointed out that the club, one of 35 selected for the list, was the only one from the northeastern United States. It was rated No. 24 in that inducted group and 144th overall, based on the criteria of history of excellence, quality of membership, quality of governance, tradition and heritage, condition of facilities and the caliber of professional club management and staff. “We’re proud of this. It’s a pretty large and prestigious group of clubs,” said Evans. He said, on a broader perspective beyond Lake Naomi, that “what it says is that the Pocono region can compete with those other areas. People are looking for a high-quality family recreation experience close to home.” Because of that, Evans said, Lake Naomi weathered the economic downturn and there has been a “stronger usage” by part-time residents who preferred not to travel far. Club memberships and rentals are at an all-time high, enhanced by the brand-new community center that opened two years ago. The club has been featured in a number of media outlets, including The New York Times’ “Escapes” Section. “In the early ‘90s, there were 400 houses for sale and at this point, about 100, which is typically what you would have and want on the market as people’s lifestyles change,” Evans said as the steady churn of sellers and ready buyers balanced the numbers. “A lot of clubs lost substantial members and we were within two or three of previous years. Because the majority of homeowners don’t live here on a year-round basis, it’s a discretionary expense that they choose to make. The value continues to be there for them. They not only get to use and enjoy it (club membership) with their families, it appreciates in value.” Evans credits the “quality of the membership” to Lake Naomi’s success. “You could have the greatest facilities and programs, but if you do not have the members to support those — not just financially, but emotionally — that’s what’s been great about that. They’ve always wanted us to do the right thing. Because this is so much a family community, it is an investment in their community.” A popular retreat for a century, Lake Naomi hosts family reunions, corporate retreats, wellness retreats, food/wine tasting events, ski/sailing weekends and much more with its pristine lakes, rustic wooded lots, country homes, groomed facilities and cuisine. It has a state-of-the-art tennis facility, along with seven beaches and offers day care.

Continue the Tradition
During the past few years the Club has seen an increase in the number of sons and daughters of existing Club Members purchasing their own homes and joining the Club. These individuals have grown up spending quality time at Lake Naomi and Timber Trails and are now introducing the third generation, their children, to the special mountain lifestyle that has played such an important role in their lives. There is no better time to consider purchasing another property in Lake Naomi and Timber Trails. A number of smaller starter vacation homes are on the market at very affordable prices. What a grand tradition to continue with your children and grandchildren.
Holiday Greetings!
The arrival of the joyous Holiday Season is a vivid reminder of how quickly time passes. Was it not just yesterday when Members were sitting at the Lake Naomi Pool or Club Beach absorbing the wonderful sun rays, or playing a round of golf, or calling for court times? Now the temperatures are declining, the leaves have fallen and the days are getting shorter. The excitement builds as the first snow flakes fill the air because the Holiday Season is near. It is time to reflect upon the childhood anticipation of the Season’s traditions and receive the inner warmth that family and friends give to our lives each and ever year. This is the perfect time to remember your Lake Naomi – Timber Trails family and to say thank you. Thank you to all the Committee Members, Board of Governors and Board of Trustees for the countless hours and the dedication to ensuring that the Members’ Lake Naomi - Timber Trails home continues to be their favorite retreat. Also thank you to Management and Team Members who strive to ensure that all the Members’ experiences are top notch. As we say good-bye to 2009 and welcome 2010, may the joy of this holiday season last throughout the year for you and your loved ones.

The Club has heard the Members requests and this Fall the surface of courts 5 and 6 at the Lake Naomi Tennis Center was removed and replaced with all new screenings for the base with new Har-Tru material on top. Members will no longer experience soft spots and odd bounces. Members can now be assured of the same quality of play on courts 5 and 6 as they are accustomed to on all the other courts. This project was funded through the Clubs on-going Capital Reserve Replacement Program.
Special Family Membership Update
The sons and daughters of Club Members who are ineligible for their parents’ Regular Membership and are ineligible for Regular Membership can apply for Special Family Membership. This membership category is also open to the spouse and children of these sons and daughters. The Community Center has created a great deal of interest in the Special Family Membership Program. In order to simplify the Special Family Membership process, the Club has developed a flat rate fee system. For 2010 the Special Family Membership Fee will be $200 for each adult and $100 for each child. Special Family Members have access to all of the amenities subscribed to by the Sponsoring Regular Member.

Timber Trails Member Gate
The Timber Trails Community Association has installed an automatic gate system at the entrance to Timber Trails. The gate is activated by a bar code reader that reads a bar code sticker on your vehicle and automatic access to Timber Trails is obtained. This gate provides quicker access to amenities by minimizing the waiting time for guests to be signed in at the Ranger attended gate. The TTCA is offering the benefit of this system to Lake Naomi Club Members. As a Lake Naomi Club Member you can purchase a bar code sticker or stickers at a cost of $10 per sticker. Bar code stickers must be applied to the car by a Ranger or Administrative personnel. Bar code stickers will be available for purchase and application Tuesday thru Saturday from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM at the Administrative Office. Stickers cannot be applied if the temperature outside falls below 38 degrees. They also cannot be applied if it is raining. If you are interested in taking part in the Member Gate System, please stop by the office during the designated time or contact Sharon Lee Heron at 570-646-9191 ext. 106 to set an appointment.
Have We Got A Vacation Spot For You
When you hear your colleagues at work, your neighbors and your friends talking about their summer vacations and the fact that they had to cut their vacation short due to beaches being closed as a result of pollution or that traffic was terrible or there was nothing for the kids to do but go to the boardwalk and spend money -- be sure to tell them that you have a great vacation spot for them in the Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. People often book their vacation rentals early and many times go back to a less than satisfying location based on force of habit. It is not too early to plant the seed in order to have your colleagues, neighbors and friends spend their 2010 summer vacation at Lake Naomi - Timber Trails, the only Five Star Platinum Club Community in the Northeast. Be sure to tell them that Lake Naomi - Timber Trails has seven debris free sandy beaches and a whole lot more. Like fast-dry, soft surface tennis courts, a wonderful golf course, two swimming pools with water slides, the Kid’s Klub Camp Program, creative teen and pre-teen programs, adult activities, a Clubhouse-Restaurant, Fitness Center, three lakes and two ponds, sailing, boating, windsurfing, canoeing, mountain biking, fishing, hiking and outdoor programs as well as top-notch instructional programs in swimming, sailing, tennis and golf. The best got better with the award winning 48,000 square foot Logan Steele Community Center. The Community Center features an indoor swimming pool, state of the art fitness center and aerobics studio, multi-purpose space capable of accommodating two indoor tennis courts, a covered pavilion, paddle tennis court and much, much, more. If the Club can help you in attracting others to vacation in the Community by providing you with DVD’s, Leisure Service Guides, Calendars, Newsletters, Activity Flyers and the like, just give Membership Director Laura Altemose a call at (570) 646-9191, ext. 104 or email her at laltemose@lakenaomiclub.com. If you need Laura to speak directly with potential visitors, she will be glad to do that as well. Start now! Promote your Five Star Platinum Club Community. Planning for a great 2010 Season is underway.

The reception desk also keeps a highlight sheet on platform tennis as well as the official rules for the Members who wish to use them. Additional information can also be found on the APTA website at www.platformtennis.org. Tennis Committee Member Lew Rarig is willing to help organize games if you are looking to play. He keeps a roster at the Community Center reception desk of players and visits the list from time to time to monitor interest. If there is enough interest some regular play times may start, similar to the indoor tennis games our Members organize in the winter. Please contact Meredith Sensenig at 570-646-8585, ext 104 or msensenig@lakenaomiclub.com for additional information. This is a great addition to the Lake Naomi Club offerings for Members to enjoy this winter.

Tennis Activities Guide
The Tennis Activities Guide (TAG) continues to be the compilation of pertinent information Tennis Members turn to for all the scheduled play, tournaments and events, that the Tennis Committee and Club Management offer throughout the summer season. Now that the season has come to a close, the Committee is again making important decisions for play offered in the 2010 season. All the suggestions submitted over the summer to the Tennis Committee have been compiled and discussed and are being considered. If you have additional input regarding the tennis programs and events your ideas are welcomed. Please contact one of the Members of the Tennis Committee or Meredith Sensenig at msensenig@lakenaomiclub.com. But don’t hesitate as the final edition is already being compiled. Tennis Committee Members: MaryLou Billyer, Jim Bulter, Sara Clarkson, Jeanne Christian, Kate Elkadi, Anita Gallocher, Diane Heisler, Laura Howe, Susanna Kopchains, Deb McGill, Lew Rarig, Julie Spitzer, Richard Willis, Rebekah Zelman
Staff First Aid Certification
As many of you know the Lake Naomi Club requires all Staff Members to hold current CPR and AED certifications. Although we offer multiple free classes in May and June in preparation for the upcoming season, it can be challenging for some staff to find a date that works with their busy spring schedules. So we’re going to try something new. We will be scheduling two CPR classes for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend (Jan 16-Jan 18) and Presidents’ Weekend (Feb 13Feb 15). We hope returning staff will take advantage of their vacation time to accomplish a requirement in advance rather than waiting for the busier time of year. Please look for a future “blast e-mail” to the Membership announcing the dates and times for the classes. Questions may also be directed to Cheryl Cornwell at ccornwell@lakenaomiclub.com.

Post Season Tennis
The fluctuating fall weather has made for an interesting post season at Tennis. Warm weather allowed us to extend a bit beyond the scheduled closing date of Columbus Day, but ultimately the mid October cold snap required us to winterize the building, which shuts down the water supply for the season. Members have been able to “walk-on” and “self-maintain” some of the Lake Naomi courts which remained open until the “freeze-thaw” cycle began. (Once temperatures start dipping enough so we experience freezing temperatures, the courts have to be closed because the fluctuation in temperature does not allow for a safe tennis court surface.) The Club wants to thank the Membership for signing-in at the Pro-shop door podium when they used the courts. These sign-in sheets allow the Club to see how often the courts really are utilized after the main season. Hope you were able to get out and enjoy the fall tennis play.
McKee Schedule
We all hate to say goodbye to Tennis Professional Bobby McKee and family at the end of the season, but don’t forget he is only an e-mail away. While taking on his primary responsibility as Director of Mens/Womens Tennis at Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, North Carolina he is also busy working on his plans for the 2010 Tennis Professional offerings for the Lake Naomi Club. Many ideas are being considered now and your input is always valued. You can e-mail Bobby at rdm@mckeetennis.com. Please don’t hesitate to offer your suggestions. You should also contact him immediately if you have interest in his services over the holiday break. He is considering making the drive up north for a few days between Christmas and New Years if there is enough interest to warrant it. We’d like to put some cardio on the schedule at the LSCC and you could reserve court time through regular reservation procedures for private lessons if you desire. We’d also like to offer a Platform Tennis round robin as long as we get the participants. Please contact Bobby immediately to express your interest so plans can get finalized.
TENNIS TALK
by Bobby McKee
Know yourself as a tennis player: If you have watched or played tennis, you certainly have seen players with varied strokes and tactics of play, as well as their own unique oncourt demeanors. When we all first learned the game, the emphasis was on the mechanics or physical skills. These must be learned first in anyone’s development. Later the mental aspect is developed, enabling the physical to become functional. The last area to be developed is the emotional, which enables the physical and mental to work together. If it is lacking, it is the monkey wrench that can break down the machinery. Wherever you are in your development, it is important to know yourself – your physical, mental and emotional skills and how to improve and maximize those skills. I believe three ingredients are necessary for a tennis player and any other athlete to gain a measure of success: ability, desire and opportunity. I believe ability is given at birth - individuals with four-cylinder engines cannot run on eight cylinders. Each one of us has a potential for size, speed, strength, coordination and instinct and each has a maximum for development. Their development will be based on an individual’s desire and opportunities. Desire is an individual’s responsibility, for it is our own choice whether to develop or neglect the ability we possess. Desire is the basis for all motivation. How to instill desire is a mystery that is rarely solved, but in the end it is up to each individual. Opportunity is an individual’s responsibility as well. If you are a parent, you can provide the opportunity for your child to be exposed to those things which will contribute to your child’s growth. If you are an adult, you can make decisions to become involved in programs that will provide for your own growth. Wherever you are in your development, seek to find the avenue that will enhance your own growth. Learn as much as you can about the three main aspects of developing as a tennis player and know that learning can occur at any level of development – whether you are a budding junior star or a super senior!

Second Annual Under 21 Laser Regatta
2009 marked the second year the Sailing Association hosted an Under 21 Laser Sailing Regatta. This suggestion came from young sailors at the end of the 2007 season and the interest continued in 2009. The Association held the event on Saturday, August 1st at 10:00 AM, prior to the typical noon starts. The Laser Fleet Captain and Vice Commodore held a skippers meeting to make sure all were properly prepared for the sailing and then the 13 enthusiastic juniors hit the water for what was one of the most highly anticipated events of the summer. Other Sailors loaned their Lasers and came early in the morning to help rig and get them headed in the right direction. It was the volunteering efforts of the sailing community that brought this event together. This event was again a great addition to the race schedule and will surely be included in 2010. Below are the race results: 1st Place – Chris Spencer 2nd Place – Nick Osmon 3rd Place – Matt Trabold 4th Place – Tim Osmon 5th Place - Mike Trabold 6th Place – Dan Steinmetz 7th Place – Nick Poulin 8th Place – Jack Hoover 9th Place – Josh Greisach 10th Place - Ryan Spencer 11th Place - Chris and Stephen Guarducci 12th Place - Nick Gonzalez Congratulations Sailors – we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Membership Adjustments
Based on the LSCC opening in 2007, an Ad Hoc Committee comprised of members of the finance and membership/marketing committees was formed in January 2007 to evaluate the equity of the current dues structure and the adequacy of fee income to meet Club needs. The Committee agreed than a cost-benefit approach should be used as the basis for determining an equitable dues/fees structure. This methodology permitted the Ad-Hoc Committee to establish dues/fees for the different membership categories according to the benefits and services they receive, while also taking into account a desire for simplicity and the financial needs and membership goals of the Club. As a result of this study the Ad-Hoc Committee recommended a ten year plan employing the cost-benefit approach for establishing an equitable dues structure. This plan would target the dues increases needed annually in future years to close the inequity gap. This recommendation was ultimately approved by the Finance Committee, Board of Governors and Board of Trustees. Membership fees for 2010 will be increased the same dollar amount across the Board. This means that percentage wise the increase for some membership categories will be higher then for others. While these increases will not close the inequity gap, it will keep the inequity gap from growing. The results of the changes in 2010 will be carefully evaluated by the Finance Committee, BOG and BOT before action is taken on the Club’s 2011 operating budget and fee structure.
Frostbite Regatta
This year’s last organized day of sailboat racing for the 2009 season was held on Saturday, September 19th. The third Saturday of September wasn’t very “frost like” but it was a nice fall day for a few sailors to get out for the two races provided by the Club’s Safety Boats. Final placing for the two race regatta was 1st – Dean Neely, 2nd – John Whipple, 3rd – Jason Neely and 4th - Andy Montano. The first and second place boats were tied with equal first and second place finishes so the tie was broken by the last highest score which was Dean. A battle interesting to watch… thanks Dean and John! Those of you who missed this last opportunity to round the marks this season, make sure you plan to participate next year. 10
Junior Sailing Program 2009
The Sailing Program participant numbers broke all records in the 2009 season. Typically the Club enrolls 75 students and occasionally stretch to 80 or more with minimal adjustments and changes. This season we accommodated 110 students by adding additional classes and hiring two Junior Instructors to assist the Sailing Instructors. The Club very thankfully also had three “A Fleet” participants volunteer through the Club’s TMIT (Team Member in Training) Program specifically to help with the beginner classes. The efforts of all involved made this new schedule work and the season ran very smoothly. Head Sailing Instructor Mike Mylan assisted by Sailing Instructors Chris Grasso, Jordan Scheremeta, TJ McCann, Andrew Rohan and Toni Simonik all worked together to make sure our sailors experienced the same quality of lesson they would have with less students. All the positive feedback by participants and parents is genuinely appreciated as this was an unexpected challenge. The Club is thrilled with the increased interest in sailing and encourages all Members to participate in the fun next season. The two hour, twice a week sessions run for six weeks allowing our young sailors plenty of time to increase their knowledge as well as their sailing and racing ability. Our sailors also have been finding the time to join in on the Sailing Association’s regattas and events. The Not Ready for Prime Time fleet races again had a separate Junior category this season to accommodate the Junior sailors that came out racing. The Club also, for the first time, required A Fleet students to participate in the Silver Fleet races. The Sailing Membership was thrilled to have the increased numbers and competition. This exciting trend remained consistent with the highest ever participation in the Club’s Junior Regatta. 48 sailors in 31 boats competed. Not only is the weekend racing devoted to the Junior Sailors, but the Club also celebrated with a Saturday evening Family Beach Tailgate Party and the End of Season Junior Sailing Celebration on Sunday. Sailors and their families gathered in the Logan Steele Community Center Pavillion to recap the summer, honor the season’s high scoring sailors and distrubute their awards, stat sheets and mementos. Pizza and cake were served by the Sailing Committee Volunteers and a great time was had by all. The annual awards were presented as follows: Junior Regatta nd st 3rd place – Brett Maute 1 place – Dan Steinmetz 2 place – Christian Neuman The Fleet Racing that takes place as part of the Instructional Program awards follow: B Fleet A Fleet 1st Place (tie) – Rebeca Gardner 1st Place – Mike Trabold Annelies McCann with Alexandra Kraczk 2nd Place – Matt Trabold nd rd 2 Place – Maggie Friel 3 Place – Dan Steinmetz 3rd Place – Connor Gallagher Selected students were also awarded for the four Junior Sailing Awards for special honors which have been a long standing tradition at the Lake Naomi Club, they included: Matt Trabold – Owaissa Cup: Awarded to the Junior with the best score for the summer.
Rebecca Gardner – Sunfish Sportsman Trophy:
Awarded to the Junior deemed to be “the best sport”.
Travis Strominger – Pine Tree Camp Trophy:
Awarded to the Junior showing the best progress. Mike Trabold - The Thomas Cup: Awarded for special efforts to help others.
Congratulations to all the young sailors who joined in the fun of sailing. We look forward to having you all back in the 2010 season.
Aquatic Vegetation Control Update
In the 2009 Mid-Summer edition of Reflections the Club presented an article pertaining to the program for controlling aquatic vegetation in our lakes. Within the contents of that article we informed the membership that an invasive aquatic plant by the name of Fanwort, also known as Cabomba, had been discovered in Lake Naomi. If left uncontrolled this highly competitive, densely growing submerged aquatic plant will progressively colonize until it crowds out native plants and hinders recreational activities. Immediately the Club knew Management needed to respond with a planned program. Various options were explored to control the spread of this plant. Mechanical harvesting (cutting) was not an option since fragmentation will cause Fanwort to possibly re-root and spread quickly. Hand harvesting (including the roots) is an option for a few stalks distributed in a sparse nature. Since the main beds were too large and dense for hand harvesting, chemical treatment was thought to be the best option at that point in the growing season. The Club’s Lakes Management Consultant developed a chemical treatment management protocol whereby they recommended the use of Sonar time release pellets. For Sonar to be effective, a low concentration of the herbicide must stay in contact with the plant for an extended period of time. The recommendation was to conduct treatments at two week intervals over a period of twelve weeks. Upon completion of the treatments it was determined that the herbicide treatments were ineffective in controlling the plant. The ineffectiveness of the herbicide treatments forced management to re-visit extraction alternatives. During this process a procedure called suction harvesting was explored. Suction harvesting is the process of mechanically vacuuming the aquatic plant. The procedure involves a dive team and platform boat rigged with a large vacuum and hose that terminate into a catch bag. The divers vacuum the sediment beneath the aquatic plant root structure and extract the entire plant. The vegetative material collects into the catch bag and is properly disposed of. In early October the Club engaged the services of Water’s Edge Restoration and Management LLC from Danbury, Connecticut to perform the suction harvesting operation. On October 9th Water’s Edge mobilized its equipment to Lake Naomi and successfully extracted the Fanwort beds. While the Fanwort beds were removed in their entirety it will still be necessary to closely monitor the lake for any Fanwort re-growth. Key department heads and team members such as the safety boat operators and harvester operators have been properly trained in identifying Fanwort. Our goal is to totally eliminate this invasive aquatic plant from the waters of Lake Naomi-Timber Trails. Scott Hall, Project Manager, shall@lakenaomiclub.com
Temporary Memberships Are Important
The total number of families that subscribed to the Club’s Temporary Membership (TM) during the 2009 season was 676. Temporary Memberships for 2009 generated in excess of $220,000 in fees towards the annual operations budget. Temporary Members are described as a family living on a temporary basis in the home of a Club Member when the Home Owner/Club Member is not present. This includes those renting homes as well as Family Members and Colleagues of Club Members utilizing homes without the Club Member being present. Temporary Memberships are very important to the Club as not only do Temporary Members generate a significant amount of revenue for the Club, but Temporary Members also represent the number two source of future Club Members. The number one source of future Club Members is through referrals from existing Club Members. Remember the Membershare Referral program was expanded to include Temporary Members. When your referral purchases their Temporary Membership, you will be rewarded 25 Club Dollars for each week your referral purchases their Temporary Membership with a maximum of 100 Club Dollars per referral. You will receive a stored value card that can be utilized toward your Membership Fees or used at any amenity. To qualify, the person you refer must be totally new to the Lake Naomi Club and the referral card must be turned into the Administrative Office before the temporary membership is purchased. The Membership/Marketing Committee plans to continue its marketing efforts for Temporary Members, as once families see and experience the Lake Naomi and Timber Trails Community, the chances of their becoming a Property Owner/Club Member increases dramatically.

DES Tennis Outing
Continuing our “Community Outreach Program”, several Club Members participate in a unique opportunity to work with physically challenged adults from the Stroudsburg “Developmental Educational Services” Center with a tennis activity. During the warmer months this takes place at the Stroudsburg High School one to two times a month. Since they do not have an indoor facility they are occasionally invited to visit the Logan Steele Community Center for the activity. Such was the case recently when the group which runs from 15-18 participants, met with seven Club Members, led by Anita Scarperia, on the Community Center indoor courts. The visiting group spent about an hour developing hand/eye coordination, where just swinging a racquet and making contact with the ball is a great challenge but often rewarded with wide smiles, thumbs up and obvious great satisfaction. Over the years, some players are now able to have limited volleying exchanges with our Members. In general, it is a good physical activity for them. Following the session cupcakes - by Anita - juice and some banter helped everyone learn more about the special guests. The group looks forward to coming here and it is a most rewarding and gratifying experience for each participating Club Member. They will be visiting the Community Center again on Tuesday, December 8th from 12 Noon to 1:30 PM. So come out to observe or participate in the Community Outreach Program. A social time will follow having a holiday theme with carols and maybe a surprise visit from Santa.
Is the Ice Safe for You, Your Friends and Equipment?
With Winter on its way, the ice fishing season is upon us. To assure a safe time while ice fishing, you must remember to follow certain precautions. Carelessness is the number one enemy of ice fisherpersons and knowledge is the number one weapon against that enemy. The best equipment is of no value if you are in icy water fighting to escape. Please take the following precautions when ice fishing to assure yourself and others of a good time. Know the ice. When selecting a location, check the ice by chipping it with a sharp object. If ice chips and has a clinking sound, it is good ice. If it crumbles and has a dull sound, it is unsafe. Stickups, piers or any protruding structures cause weak ice. Areas that have or are near currents, springs and aerators are also areas that may have weak ice. Please stay clear of these areas. Two inches of clear blue ice can support one person traveling on foot, three inches can support a group traveling in single file. Four or more inches of ice is considered safe for general use – such as a group of ice fisherpersons. Ice that is four inches thick will hold up to 260 pounds, over six inches is safe for you and your equipment. Cloudy or opaque ice may support less weight, and slush ice on a lake is only onehalf as strong as clear blue ice. Before venturing out onto the ice, exercise extreme caution – especially during the first ice cover and during the late Winter months when rapid changes occur in ice structure. Black ice is clear and has no snow frozen in it. This can be safe but it is difficult to see water holes on a calm day when there are no ripples on the water. It is very slippery and ice creepers for your footwear are a must. It’s always a good idea to use the buddy system when ice fishing. In the event that you break through the ice, stay calm and do not panic, put your arms up and lay them on the ice, your clothing will freeze and adhere to the ice. This will keep your body at a level accessible for rescue. Another rescue method is to take two large spikes and tie a leather thong to the head of each spike. Hang this device around your shoulders and slip the spikes in your breast pockets. If you should fall through the ice, grab the spikes to claw your way out of the water. REMEMBER, it is IMPOSSIBLE to crawl out of slippery ice if the water is more than waist deep. When trying to locate fish, do not move more than 10 feet from one hole to a new hole. Fish run in schools and will be feeding on plankton within a certain area. Depth of the ice is also very critical: at the first safe ice, fishing is best in the shallow water areas, as the ice thickens, the fish move into the deeper water areas. 12
Lake Naomi Club Q & A
Why is the Club doing away with the hitching posts at North Beach and the LN Pool Marina? Boats, canoes and kayaks piled on top of each other at these locations have created a dangerous situation for Members attempting to store their watercraft in these areas. The aesthetics of these areas have also been compromised by the hitching posts. The Club previously experienced this situation at Club Beach and eliminated the hitching posts at that location in 2007. The Club found that it could provide much safer and improved service to Members by eliminating the hitching posts and providing additional racks, especially kayak racks. Will any areas still have hitching posts? Yes. West Beach and Pebble Beach will continue to have hitching posts in 2010. What happens to the additional revenue from these additional racks? The Club reinvests these funds in the Members by providing additional boat, canoe and kayak racks in order to provide a safer environment for the storage of watercraft. Will the bicycle-pedestrian paths along Route 423, Blockhouse Road and at the entrance to the Community Center be maintained during the winter months? No. The paths will be officially closed from November 15th through April 15th of each year. Members can continue to utilize the path at their own risk during this time period. Members can also utilize the path at their own risk for cross country skiing. On days when the Community Center closes at 5:00 PM, what time does the half price ($5.00) guest fee go into effect? 1:00 PM How many days each year is the Community Center open? Three Hundred and forty – eight. The Community is only closed for the two week maintenance period in November, on Thanksgiving Day and on December 24th and 25th. With the exception of those seventeen days, the Community Center is open every day of the year. The Club reserves the right to print and/or respond to inquiries at its sole discretion.
