DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood

Flea Market Finds On the hunt for a good bargain? Check out these popular flea markets. Come ready to spend some money and get ready to haggle for a good deal!

E

mpty out the truck bed or hitch up the trailer! This edition of Day Trippin is going to send you to some on the greatest treasure hunts shopping for items that you didn’t even know you needed or wanted. There are some enormous flea markets and swap meets in the Midwest. Kansas is famous for them. But this week we are exploring the St. Louis I-44 corridor, specifically Eureka. With COVID-19 restrictions lifted in counties around St. Louis recently, folks came out by the thousands to shop at the Eureka Swap Meet and Garage Sale held in the parking lots of Six Flags Amusement Park. It was the 15th year for the bazaar that hosts more than 500 vendors and crowds of 10,000 people. Shoppers didn’t hit those numbers this year, but still there were lots of people. Food trucks sold out and sellers got rid of a lot of junk at these flea market venues. But there were new items, too. One seller emptied a U-Haul truck full of luxury gas ovens worth in the $10,000 range, for less than $4,000. It’s the Midwest equivalent of a Turkish Bazaar. There is a lot of haggling that goes on between dealers and customers. Most of it is good natured. But some get upset when they find a treasure that they want to get a bargain on, and the seller knows the value and is not willing to part without his price being met. This market, unlike the famous Jacob’s Cave Swap Meet, does not allow live animals, firearms, or overnight camping. Pets are welcome on a leash with their owners. No motorized vehicles are allowed, but bicycles and scooters are acceptable. The Eureka Chamber of Commerce Garage Sale & Swap Meet is the first Saturday in March annually.

rgest outdoor Bloomington has the la west flea market in the Mid Rutledge market

Moving north, the Rutledge Flea Market stands as the oldest outdoor flea market in Missouri, operating since the 1940s. Spread out over 85 acres, it is known as the largest as well. Unlike the Eureka market, The Rutledge Flea Market allows live animals and firearm sales. Also, one may camp at this place, with RV and tent spaces available for rent, along with coin operated shower houses. Those who love Jacob’s Cave Swapping Days will appreciate shopping in Rutledge, a town of only 85 residents that sits near Quincy, Ill. Rutledge is three hours north of Lake of the Ozarks, traveling Highway 63 through Columbia. The Rutledge Flea Market has opened for the season, and is held the second weekend monthly through October. Third Sunday Market at Bloomington

Bloomington, Ill., is home to one of the largest outdoor flea markets in the Midwest. It’s 4.5 hours from Lake of the Ozarks through St. Louis on I-70 W. It runs from May to October, held monthly as aptly named, on the third Sunday of the month. This is the bougie market, as the kids say, focusing on the finest in antiques, collectibles, and garden items. Continuously operating since 1988, the

March 25 - April 7, 2022

DAY TRIP 3rd Sunday Market has indoor as well as outdoor vendors from 17 states and more than 450 vendors. Plenty of food is sold on-site, but this market does not allow animals, pets, etc. Thousands of Midwestern collectors flock to Bloomington to buy and sell. Prepare to haggle, whether buying or selling. A pro tip is if you love something you are selling, you are not going to fetch the price that you want for it. Go to eBay or another market with collectibles. Shoppers love to find a treasure, but usually want to get a huge discount on it. Whether they plan to resell it or not, you aren’t going to get what it’s worth to you at any flea market. Saturdays are a great day to visit flea markets, get there early for best selection. Late in the day is a wonderful time to visit as well. This is when you will likely find deeply discounted items, and some sellers are just giving stuff away. They will put up free signs, or dump what they don’t want to carry home in the surrounding dumpsters. Five families were dumpster diving at the Eureka Flea Market after the show. This is where a brand new set of computer speakers were scored. Yes, dumpster diving is acceptable at flea markets unless otherwise posted. Sundays are more laid back, and shoppers and vendors are tired, but friendly. It’s the last day of selling for the week, and you can actually chat and visit since the markets aren’t as busy as on Saturdays.

Jacob’s Cave Swap Meet Closer to home, acres of vendors set up for this popular event held three times a year. Small animals, new and used items, antiques and a variety of items are available for sale. It’s a great place to look around or find something different. Admission is $10 per vehicle. Upcoming dates: March 31, April 1-3 June 2-5 Sept. 29 & 30, Oct. 1 7 2 Hours are Thursdays-Saturday from 7 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sundays 7 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, go to www.jacobscave.com/jacobscaveanimalswap.htm

Breaking the World Record

A

second attempt to become recognized for having the World’s Largest Boat Parade will take place this summer at Lake of the Ozarks. After making a few adjustments and having more time to promote the event, organizers are confident that the record can be broken this year. Boaters are encouraged to register to enter the parade set for June 11 at 11 a.m. This year the parade will move to the Grand Glaize Arm of the Lake where it will be easier to maintain a no wake/idle speed for the duration of the parade. “This event will bring national exposure to our great outdoor destination and we feel it is just a perfect fit for our incredible boating community for the Lake to hold this title,” Lagina Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Tri-County Lodging Association, said. “The Lake still holds the title for the Best Recreational Lake in the Nation and this wouldn’t just be a point of pride for the Lake of the Ozarks. This goes beyond the Lake and even beyond Missouri. We could bring the world record to the United States.” Last year’s parade at Lake of the Ozarks drew more than 600 registered boats. An adjudicator with the Guinness Book of World Records traveled to the Lake area to oversee the history-making attempt. The current Largest Boat Parade world record is held by Malaysia

BOATING with 1,180 boats which was made in 2014. At Lake of the Ozarks, the 2021 boat parade was set up for several reasons, Fitzpatrick said. The biggest reason was as a fundraiser to host the Bicentennial fireworks displays held in August at Lake of the Ozarks to commemorate Missouri’s 200th Birthday and Bagnell Dam’s 90th Birthday. A group of volunteers organized a number of Best Dam Birthday Bash events held at the Lake spanning several months. “After we got through the paperwork with Guinness World Records we only had about three weeks to promote the (boat parade),” Fitzpatrick said. “This year we are way ahead of the curve. We also learned a lot last year in the process, as happens with any first-time event. There’s no better place to break this record and bring it home to the U.S. and Lake of the Ozarks. There’s a lot of buzz and excitement about the parade and upcoming boating season.” Registration is open and cost is $20 per vessel. Go to www.funlake.com/events/boat-parade to register. Each

registrant will receive a flag that must be displayed on their boat during the parade. More information about setup and official rules are available online. Any proceeds, after expense are paid, will go to benefit the Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council. The Water Safety Council will be providing 12 safety boats during the event. Mortgage Headquarters is the Grand Marshall/sponsor again this year. Other sponsors are needed and can contact Lagina Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Tri-County Lodging Association, at 573-348-0111. The Tri-County Lodging Association, Lake of the Ozarks CVB, Lake of the Ozarks Water Safety Council, and the Camdenton Chamber of Commerce are sponsors. Committee members from Lake TV, Lake of the Ozarks Council of Local Governments, City of Lake Ozark, City of Osage Beach, Ozarks Amphitheater, Lindyspring, Backstage Biz, The Beam Lighthouse, Woods Supermarket, Bob’s Nowake Zone, and Bob Schwartz Marketing are all a part of coordinating the event.

Favorite walking trails for spring

With spring weather warming things up at Lake of the Ozarks, it’s time to dust off those Nikes and spend some time in the great outdoors. There are plenty of places to go whether you are looking for a challenging day hike or a something shorter that accommodates a stroller and several kids in tow. Here are our suggestions for getting outside to celebrating spring!

Easy Walking Trails Walking is a great activity for just about anyone because it is low impact but keeps you moving. The paved walking paths along Horseshoe Bend make it easy and convenient to log a few miles. Depending on where you start, there are some challenging hills but you can also find areas that remain flat. The Tri-County YMCA has an indoor walking track. Available to members and non-members with a day pass. Of course, they have a variety of other classes if you really want to get moving that includes weight lifting and yoga. 18 VACATION NEWS

Park Trails More than a half-million visitors go to Ha Ha Tonka State Park each year. Besides the castle ruins, the unique trails draw people to the park that is consistently named one of the best in the nation. Fifteen miles of walking and hiking trails wind through the park and reveal its many geological gems, but naturalists and gardeners may enjoy the woodlands more. Little bluestem is just one beautiful prairie grass thriving under and with several varieties of oak trees. A backpack trail March 25 - April 7, 2022

Missouri’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) notes that Ha Ha Tonka “is unique in the quality and quantity of its remarkable geological features.” One is a natural bridge spanning 60 feet with more than 100 feet below it. Another is a steep sinkhole, 500 feet long, 300 feet wide. One rock face rising 150 feet from a sunken basin holds two caves, both used by criminals as hideouts in the 1830s.

Lake of the Ozarks State Park is a local treasure and is one of the most popular parks in Missouri. Accessed from Osage Beach Parkway and off of Highway 42, LOSP was established in 1946. It is 17,441 acres with 85 miles of shoreline and 12 trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding. One of the more unique trails, the LO Aquatic Trail, is on water. Boaters can pick up a free booklet at the park’s office to seek 14 points along the shoreline. Trails through the park lead from one Instagram-worthy location to another. One of these is a wild area consisting of 1,200 undeveloped acres to be explored, but just a short hike and drive away are all the urban amenities anyone could want: shopping, dining, music, and movies.

VACATION NEWS 19

ON THE COVER Favorite Trails There are more than 1,000 miles of trails in Missouri and dozens of trails at our state parks. We’ve narrowed down the best ones in the area, depending on your interest and ability. See you on the trails! Shady Ridge Trail

Why we like it: It’s quick and easy. Located at Grand Glaize Beach at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park, it’s in the heart of Osage Beach. Pack a picnic for the beach and when you’re done, walk it off on this easy trail. What you’ll see: Lots of Lake views. It winds around the Lake’s shoreline. What to know: It will take you about 45 minutes to complete this one-mile trail. Where to find it: The trail can be accessed at Pa He Tsi or by the marina at Grand Glaize Beach. Trail of Four Winds

Missouri State Parks online (mostateparks.com) has an interactive map so you can read about all the trails offered and explore the best trails that fit your ability and timeframe.

Why we like it: It’s challenging. It’s open to hikers, bikers and for horseback riding. What you’ll see: Rock outcroppings, bluffs and sharp drop-offs, water crossings and lots of wildlife. What to know: At more than 13 miles it is the longest trail in the park, and probably not for beginners. There are two loops, so you can do a shortcut. One loop is estimated to take four hours, while the other will take about nine hours. Where to find it: On Hwy. 134 (Lake of the Ozarks State Park entrance off of Hwy. 42), about a mile down. Spring Trail

Why we like it: Most of it is paved and handicap accessible. What you’ll see: This short trail starts with views of Lake of the Ozarks and continues to a spring that flows about 58 million gallons of water a day. What to know: The trail ends at the bottom of 316 wooden steps that will take you up to more trails and the castle ruins if you choose. It also joins other trails in the area including Colosseum and Devil’s Kitchen where you will see impressive natural rock formations. Where to find it: Off Tonka Spring Road, at Ha Ha Tonka State Park, outside of Camdenton. Turkey Pen Hollow Trail

Why we like it: There’s plenty of seclusion along this 6.5 mile trail, which can be shortened by taking a loop. What you’ll see: Dolomite glades known for the grassy, flowering vegetation; a large sinkhole, rocks that have shifted near the Red Arrow Fault Line. What to know: Park officials ask for backpackers to register at the park office before starting a hike. This area is also occasionally managed by controlled burns so it’s best to check at the trailhead or park office for information. Where to find it: Ha Ha Tonka’s Woodland Natural Area parking area.

More Ways To Get Moving If you are feeling a bit competitive, there are always local 5Ks and other races being held around the Lake area. The 13th annual Lake Regional Health System Fun Run/Walk will be held May 7. The 5K starts at 8 a.m. in the hospital parking lot. Entry is $30. Go to www.lakeregional.com/calendar/event/5-7-22-fun-runwalk. The Lake of the Ozarks Stop Human Trafficking Coalition will host the Rise Up 5K May 21 at Rock Island Park. The 5K begins at 9 a.m. Entry is $20 in advance. For more information, email pact_eldon@yahoo.com. The Rock Island Road Race 15K/10K/5K will be held June 11 at Rock Island Park. Proceeds benefit the Miller County Child Advocacy Council. The race begins at 7:15 a.m. For more information, go to 5th Annual Rock Island Road Race on Facebook.

Buying your first home: What you should know

T

he housing market has exploded since 2020. The pandemic fueled a house-buying frenzy with remote work and leaving large urban areas to live in different parts of the country is becoming more mainstream. According to the National Association of Realtors, 31% of all home purchases since 2020 have been made by first-time home buyers. “Buying your first home is an emotional experience,” said Bonnie Lee, Mercury Insurance Vice President of Property Claims. “And while the first few weeks are filled with the excitement of all the things you can do now that you have your own place, it’s always good to be prepared and protect your new investment if disaster strikes.” Whether you’ve just purchased your first home or purchased a home in a different part of the country, homeownership is a big commitment. As a new homeowner you have to prepare for everything from routine maintenance to possible damage from a storm, fire or vandalism. It can sound overwhelming, but with a bit of plan-

ning, developing good homeowner habits will keep your home in top shape for years to come. Renovations. Renovating is one of the first things homeowners look forward to doing with their new home and one of the most popular renovations lately have been home offices. “Homeowners who were able to move during the pandemic and work from home are looking to transform part of their living space into a dedicated professional work space,” said Lee. “Converting small rooms or bedrooms into a home office not only maintains the homeowners’ work-life balance, but it may also give their home a financial boost by offering this popular feature should they sell their home in the future.” Homeowners should discuss any intended business activity from their home with their insurance agent as most homeowners’ policies exclude or limit coverage for business-related activity and business property. __________________ continued on Page 30 March 25 - April 7, 2022

High-impact bathroom updates

T

oday’s home improvements aren’t just about updating your home to make it more functional. Many homeowners are making strategic improvements that also help green their home and boost its resale value. One of the best places to start is also one of the most frequented rooms in the house: the bathroom. Eco-friendly improvements help save money on utility bills, but that’s just the start. Green updates help you feel good about your impact on the earth, helping you eliminate water waste, use less energy and reduce use of toxic chemicals. What’s more, green home improvements like those in the bathroom are in high demand in real estate, meaning your home can command a higher price at resale. In fact, over half of agents and brokers found that consumers were interested in sustainability when shopping for a home, according to a 2021 report by the National Association of Realtors. Bathrooms are one of the best places to make green updates that streamline use and reduce waste because they make your home more comfortable and they get noticed if you decide to sell. For example, toilets can be huge waterwasters, but a simple update can provide significant savings.

Dual-flush toilet systems are a modern option that lets you choose how much water is used when you flush based on if there is liquid or solid matter that needs disposal. Update your current bathrooms with dual-flush models, and to add even more value to your home, add a new bathroom that features this water-saving toilet. With modern technology, you can install a bathroom virtually anywhere. Saniflo has created innovative, eco-friendly, above-floor plumbing technology that allows for quick and easy installation with minimal hassle and mess. Highly focused on sustainability, these macerators and grinders work throughout a home, including on a second story, in a basement, in a garage or in a structure that sits on a slab, like a shed that would traditionally require concrete cutting to create below-floor drainage. For example, the Sanicompact can be used to add a small guest bathroom in an existing space without drilling through concrete, which saves materials and reduces waste. The dual-flush feature flushes waste with 1.28 gallons per flush and liquids with only 1 gallon. In addition, the Saniaccess 3 macerating unit paired with Saniflo’s water-saving rear-discharge toilet is ideal for full bathrooms, using a smaller amount of water than __________________ continued on Page 35 March 25 - April 7, 2022

conventional toilets: 1.28 versus 1.6 gallons per flush with no sacrifice in flushing power. With this product, you can feel confident that you are going green in your new bathroom. It is also recognized as water-saving by the EPA’s WaterSense program. Saniflo toilets and self-contained macerating units are CEC (California Energy Commission) listed. “You can use light flush with less water and a full flush with more,” he explains. “In San Diego, we pay a fortune for water, so we try to save as much as possible. Ultra-low-flush, high-efficiency toilets are very important here.” In addition to upgrading the toilet, there are other important steps you can take to green the bathroom. Natural light and energy-efficient lighting are two practical and environmentally friendly ways to light the bathroom. To start, swap out all light bulbs for longlasting, energy-efficient LED bulbs. Then, consider opportunities for adding more natural light, such as a skylight that allows light in without sacrificing privacy. Depending on the type of skylight you select, this upgrade can provide solar heating, better ventilation, and reduce mildew and mold growth. Finally, to truly green your bathroom, it’s important to be mindful about using natural materials and avoiding VOCs (volatile organic compounds) that are toxic to the environment. Popular ecofriendly products include glass, reclaimed wood, metal, bamboo, cork and porcelain. When choosing your materials, consider whether the materials will serve a long-lasting purpose and can eventually be recycled.

New brewery opens in Camdenton Providing American-style craft beers, a selection of bourbons, whiskies, cocktails and wines.

A

new brewery is opening in Camdenton with a state-of-the-art system capable of brewing craft beers as well as a selection of bourbons, whiskies, cocktails and wines. An offshoot of Shortleaf Brewing - Winghaven, the new production brewery will consist of a fully-automated 15 barrel, three vessel steam system, 30 bbl cellaring tanks, and an automated canning line. The brewery will also house a tasting room. Shortleaf Brewing will officially open its doors on Saturday, April 30 at 11 a.m. It is located in what was the Dogwood Thriftstore across the street from Bledsoe’s on Hwy. 5. The completely-remodeled space is over 6,000 square feet and includes an additional 2,000 square feet of patio space and an acre of green space. The grand opening will feature live music throughout the day, tours of the facility, giveaways, special releases, and more. “People love craft beer and there aren’t many places to get it around the Lake. We’re excited to be that source for them now that we’re opening our doors,” said head brewer and owner Michael Crowell. “We hope to be the go-to establishment for locally-crafted brew as well as the introduction to the world of craft beer for those that have never really tried it. We’ll also have a wide assortment of bourbons, wines, really a full bar that we hope will attend to everyone’s palette.” Shortleaf Brewing is a family-owned business that began in 2019 with Shortleaf Brewing - Winghaven. Due to its popularity, Shortleaf Brewing - Winghaven, quickly outgrew their space in O’fallon, Mo. The brewery in Camdenton will be able to provide quality, craft beer for the Lake area while meeting the demands of the St. Louis region. Shortleaf Brewing’s flagship, the BOW Rider (a wheat ale aged on blood orange puree), has been well received at the Winghaven location and surrounding areas. The flagship will be available soon at a variety of locations around the Lake, on tap and as a to-go option from the brewery in Camdenton. Other popular products that will be available include: AmericAle (an American pseud-lager), MexicAle (a salted, key-lime sour), as well as the brand’s seltzers, dark ales, and IPAs. The tasting room will be installing a kitchen later this year so for now feel free to bring your own food.
