THE ARTS by Charis Patires, cpatires@gmail.com
Showcasing art at its finest
K
eeping the arts in the forefront at Lake of the Ozarks has been the goal for a few key people within the community. One of those is Dr. Paula Brown with the Lake Fine Art Academy & Galleria. Brown had a career in education as an administrator, counselor, HS Art and college art instructor, but upon retirement wanted to open a studio to showcase visual arts. In its fourth year, the studio located in Osage Beach features more than 60 artists and offers personalized instruction to train students the fine skills to draw and paint in different mediums. Students range from the age of 4-86. The gallery is full of one-of-a-kind pieces from local, Missouri and nationally-known artists. Original artwork ranges from charcoal drawings, paintings, woodwork, metal art and pottery. Anyone is welcome to stop by the gallery to see the collection. Brown collaborates with other art galleries in the area to promote the arts, the artists and their artwork. In doing so, she’s helping spearhead a number of upcoming events that will draw artists and spectators to the area. Upcoming events

EVENT
Aquapalooza on the move
A
quapalooza has been moved once again. According to a Benne Media release, after discussions concluded with the Water Patrol, a permit to hold the event at the 7-mile marker near Shady Gators has been denied. Via the release, Denny Benne of Benne Media said, “we’ve been producing the event since 2012 without incident at other locations and felt like this site made sense as we could draw on the manpower of both Shady Gators and Camden on the Lake. It takes everyone to ensure safety and make a great event including Water Patrol, fire departments, police and ambulances and we appreciate their efforts.” The patrol cited the issue that the location is one of the busiest on the lake, bringing to light safety concerns. However, a new location has already been announced. Aquapalooza will now be held at Captain Ron’s at the 34.5 mile marker on July 17th, 2021. The release stated that Captain Ron’s is the home for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and is well versed in handling the types of crowds that are typical with this event. 92.7 host Mike Clayton, who helps organize the event, says plans for audio equipment and bands

are now in flux, but they are confident that they will be able to find local acts to headline and support the ticket. However, because of the company’s work with the Shootout, they are familiar with Captain Ron’s venue and feel strongly about making the most out of this popular location. “We have a lot to consider, but we felt like we just had to have it. We don’t want to let anyone down,” Clayton said. Clayton says the Water Patrol has already given their acceptance for this location and permits will not be an issue. Now, the only hurdle is getting everything planned and organized in time. During the original move to the 7-mile
marker, a plan was in place to host the concert on two stages. Clayton confirmed that they would be returning to the original design of a single-stage and plan to setup the Captain Ron’s water access to allow for boat viewing. Clayton says they were disappointed in the permit denial and felt they had a great response to the plan from Camden on the Lake and Shady Gators. However, he says the group is equally excited to host Aquapalooza at Captain Ron’s and is looking forward to bring the lake-favorite event back to life in 2021.

DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood
Missouri Short Rails
Branson Railway.
L
ong to ride the rails, but not ready for a journey that can take days? There are four Missouri Day trips by train that are destinations not too far from the Lake of the Ozarks, and can give guests a bit of history. The St. Louis Iron Mountain Railway in Jackson beckons riders with a unique excursion on the rails. The train itself is a traveling history museum offering adventure on board each trip. For the kids, Iron Mountain Railway takes the family on a prehistoric adventure on the Dinosaur Train, filled with themed activities including bone digs. Reserve online now for the next dino departure, beginning in June. Another family oriented trip boarding in May is the Zoo Train. On May 15th, volunteer conductors shout “All Aboard,” for kids of all ages. Free watermelon and s’mores are provided to guests taking the animal themed trip. Junior Engineer and Conductor trips give little ones and their families a learning experience of a lifetime with an up close, hands on experience of what it takes to drive a train. All the child themed events encourage guests to dress up in themed costumes for the occasion, adding to the inclusive fun. 14 VACATION NEWS
Volunteers staff the entire operation, including the actors who do a fantastic job of recreating wild west shootouts on the James Gang Train Robbery events. Jackson, Missouri is only a four-hour trip down to the boot heel, near Cape Girardeau. Reservations can be made online at: https://www.slimrr.com/ Another short rail experience is the Belton, Grandview, and Kansas City Railroad in Belton. The 1950s diesel locomotive rambles through Old Town Belton on a 45 minute excursion, allowing visitors to step back to another era while riding the 1920s passenger coach. The train was once part of the St. Louis and San Francisco Blair Line, which operated from Belton to Springfield from the 1800s to the mid-1980s, with the building of Truman Dam in 1979 dissecting the first portion of the route. While there, be sure and browse the train yard, a museum of yesteryear railway displays, including two static steam locomotives. The train runs on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm and masks are required. The train boards 20 minutes before departure. Riders can depart and stroll through Main Street April 16-29, 2021
DAY TRIP Belton after the trip. Reservations online can be found here: www.kcrrm.org The Branson Scenic Railway in downtown Branson steps riders up to the 1930s through 1950s era of train travel, with a bit more comfort on board. The popular railway sees lines of tourists a block long during the busiest portion of Branson’s summer season. At 206 E. Main Street, The Silver Chef is one route on the Ozark Zephyr railway. They serve candlelit four course prime rib dinners in the vintage dining car set with china and linens. Diners are treated to majestic views of the rolling hills and forests of Branson to Northern Arkansas, riding over bridges and through tunnels on the excursion. The dinner train departs at 5pm and is a 45 minute vintage experience aboard a 1956 Budd 48 seat diner train, once part of the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy railway.
Tickets can be purchased online at: www.bransontrain.com A mini railway for the kids worthy for a day of train tripping, is the Wabash, Frisco, and Pacific 12 inch gauge live steam railroad. Located in Glencoe, the ride through the woods and along the Meramec River can accommodate parents with their children. The volunteer staff makes sure that families receive an unforgettable experience. The ride on the mini train is two miles long and lasts 40 minutes. The Wabash, Frisco, and Pacific railway was organized in 1939 and operated through the Meramec region after moving from the St. Louis Lambert Airport through the 1950s. The experience of the open air rail cars traveling through the panoramic Meramec Valley holds a wealth of wildlife for viewing and an occasional spotting of “Snowflake” the albino deer. The train tradition continues at Glencoe operated by a volunteer staff,
with tickets only a $4 donation to the organization. Departures are every twenty minutes. A gift and snack shop onsite offers souvenirs for visitors. Wabash, Frisco, and Pacific Railway 199 Grand Avenue Glencoe Online at www.wfprr.com

BOATING by Charis Patires
The ins and outs of new boat ownership
T
he boating industry surged, not only on Lake of the Ozarks, but nation-wide last year. Families looked for a safe way to social distance, spend time together and enjoy the outdoors. With schools, summer camps, sports leagues and other activities shut down because of the pandemic, families had more time to spend at the Lake. That means there are more first-time boat owners out there who may not be as familiar with operating a vessel as they should be. According to Greg Riley, a licensed Coast Guard Captain who has been teaching boating lessons for more than 25 years, owners should know how to safely operate their boat, understand water safety, be knowledgeable of Missouri boating laws, and be aware of local knowledge including speed limits, marked and unmarked shallow water areas, buoy markers, contact numbers for the water patrol and tow boat assistance. They should also know how to encounter a wake and be responsible for the wake they create, he said. While some marine dealers might give a short tutorial before handing over the keys, others take more time to make sure that each new boat owner is comfortable behind the helm. Riley teaches a Women on the Water course at MarineMax. MarineMax offers a full range of services to include boating education, service, fuel dock, storage, parts, gear center, and all things boating. A professional delivery service to all new boat owners ensures that everyone in the family can safely and comfortably operate their boat. They also offer organized boating events that create opportunities to explore new waters, form new friendships, and boat in the safety of a group. Other Ryan and Winter Miller in available resources with lots of good information include funlake.com, Lake Locator their “new-to-them” boat. app, lakeozarkboatdealers.com, and lotocaptain.com. Their dog Butters enjoys “Lake of the Ozarks offers some of the best boating in the nation. Boaters love the diversity boating with them as well. from Bagnell Dam to Truman Dam, the gorgeous landscapes, the abundance of coves to explore, the social entertainment provided by numerous waterfront establishments, quality fishing, watersports, and the many organized Lake area events and activities,” Riley said. “As a weekend destination, Lake traffic is high Friday through Sunday and boaters need to pay close attention to other boaters. As a large lake, there is a lot of areas to learn and become familiar with.” Ryan Miller learned first-hand how challenging driving a boat on Lake of the Ozarks can be. Ryan and his wife, Winter, moved to Lake of the Ozarks in March 2020, and bought their first-ever boat on Facebook Marketplace. “Before buying this boat neither of us had any boating experience,” Ryan said. “I have been in a boat before but nothing more than taking the wheel to hold a boat in place.” After purchasing the 2004 Sea Ray 270 Sundeck Ryan admits they learned how to operate it by “trial and error.” “Thankfully the gentleman who we purchased the boat from was very patient and kind. He took us out on the boat, and even let me drive while he was teaching me the very basics boating on LOTO,” Ryan said. “We’ve met some great friends here. They all have shared their boating knowledge as well. I still am interested in taking a boating class, as does my wife. I believe that would be the best advice to give any new boater.” “One thing to keep in mind for a first-time boat buyer is to set a budget on what you want to spend, and then throw that number away and triple it,” Ryan said. Initially the couple wanted to spend $5,000-$10,000 on a 19-foot runabout but were quickly talked out of making that decision from their neighbors. The advice was to go bigger. They found their boat with 500 hours on it for $21,000 but with titling, the cost of a boat lift to handle the weight and other fees their budget grew to $30,000.

Short stories that take you where you never expected to go “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain In Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life,” By
George Saunders. Random House, January 2021. 410 pages. I am reading George Saunders’ “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain in Which Four Russians Give a Master Class on Writing, Reading, and Life” with 15 other people, mostly on the West Coast, mostly strangers. Our MeetUp group chose this book on a whim while still reading contemporary short stories from collections like Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s “The Best American Short Stories.” Who would have thought that working through Ivan Turgenev’s “The Singers,” written in 1852, would be exhilarating? Good short stories are hard to write and often quite hard to fully appreciate; more so when stylized according to norms that seem archaic to us. A short story is a world unto itself, full of life, or as Saunders says, a ceremony. Central to that ceremony is the heart of the story. Entering a story, a world, when you are open and curious may well take you places you never expected. This book is a master class in reading and writing short stories, over which Saunders presides. It’s modeled after a workshop he’s taught at Syracuse University for his top writing students. In this book, the masterclass is abbreviated and delivered to the rest of us. And it seems the audience for this unusual work of nonfiction is vast and eager. The book has made an appearance on the New York Times bestseller list for three weeks. Saunders, author of the critically acclaimed novel “Lincoln in the Bardo” and short story collection “Tenth of December,” wrote that he’s talked with many readers he thought would appreciate a book like this one. There is, he writes, “a web of people who’ve put reading at the center of their lives because they know from experience that reading makes them more expansive, generous people and makes their lives more interesting.” What he didn’t mention is that people don’t stop learning when they leave 32 VACATION NEWS
school. Nor do they want to stop learning. Having someone like Saunders - a nice guy with a lot of knowledge - as a reading guide is ... well ... thrilling. For this book, Saunders selected seven stories: “In the Cart,” “The Darling” and “Gooseberries” by Anton Chekhov; “Master and Man” and “Alyosha the Pot” by Leo Tolstoy; “The Singers” by Ivan Turgenev; and “The Nose” by Nikolai Gogol. He also includes his own commentary for each story. His commentary is casual, instructive and full of insight. He’s been reading and teaching these stories for 20 years yet he’s still moved and awed by them. As Saunders says, “We’re going to enter seven fastidiously constructed scale models of the world.” These stories pose big questions, he writes, such as “How are we supposed to be living down here? What were we put here to accomplish? What should we value? What is truth, anyways, and how might we recognize it?” Key, he says, is this question: “What did we feel ...?” Imagine. A teacher who doesn’t shy away from feelings. “All coherent intellectual work begins with a genuine reaction,” Saunders says. The Russians he features were progressive reformers working in a repressive culture. They were, because of their work, imperiled, “under constant threat of censorship, in a time when a writer’s poli-
tics could lead to exile, imprisonment, and execution.” Russians regarded works of fiction as a “vital moral-ethical tool. They changed you when you read them.” Not everyone in my reading group liked all parts of Ivan Turgenev’s “The Singers” but I found myself stunned when I arrived at and read the last paragraphs. The heart of the story - a singing contest in a pub between two working class men - is beautifully described and reflected back to us by the various peasants who gather for what they expect will be a thrilling experience. It is. “During the contest,” says Saunders, “we watched the tavern morph into a church. A holy thing happened there: these rough people (peasants, poor men, worked nearly to death in this sweltering, oppressive setting) were uplifted and transformed through art.” In my own work as a museum consultant, that transformation Saunders describes is what we strive to facilitate, what we value. But, writes Saunders, “Overflowing with loveliness, (the witnesses and the singers) got totally wasted.” The energy building up to the contest and the energy generated by the contest itself had to discharge itself somewhere, somehow. Saunders and the Russian writers have our group reading closely and thinking hard. We show up, books and notes within reach, ready to discuss. By the end of the hour and a half, we finish by spontaneously expressing our gratitude for the experience that is both stimulating and affecting. Like so many meetings these days, we gather via Zoom. When it’s time to sign off, we “leave meeting” changed, not just by the story but by the way our group has worked together to get as much from the story as time and stamina allow. Together, those Russian authors, Saunders’ inspired book and the members of our group gathered in the presence of art transcend COVID-19′s dismal pall and re-ignite the human spirit. If there’s any doubt about human spirit, read those Russian stories. Rae Padilla Francoeur can be reached at rae.francoeur@gmail.com. April 16-29, 2021

e is Frank Phelps. Jim is Jim Biggs. Both play vintage Gibson guitars, and both play songs from a vintage era, the 1960s and 1970s, when melodies waxed smooth and flowed from musician down to dance floors and up to full hearts. On a warm late summer day as the Shootout wound down, Me and Jim revived those musical moves at Lake Burger. A couple swayed to the Bossa Nova beat of “The Girl from Ipanema” performed at “conversational volume.” Patrons heard and congratulated Me and Jim between songs, each praising the melodies so familiar, rendered anew on those classic guitars. Frank’s favorite vintage guitar is a 1973 Les Paul Gibson in patent-leather black. He bought it new and still thinks it’s one of the finer instruments he’s ever owned. On it, he plays chords harmonizing with the melody and taps a foot showing he still loves the rhythms of the day. Frank not only plays guitar, he also plays the mandolin, just two stringed instruments he began learning to master at the age of 7. Born into a family band in which Mom, Dad, brothers, and sisters played, it was natural that Frank follow them into music.

A
feather’s light symmetry delights as it floats from on high down to grasses below. Rarely does a hiker pass by without wondering at its design. Underwater Sea Fans are wonders, too. They waft and wave with the tides, rooted in azure blue ocean waters. Missouri has its own azure beauty in waters washing through limestone and dolomite. Right here at the Lake, the beautiful Ha Ha Tonka Spring carries that rich blue of a summer sky. Such natural beauties inspire Andrea Fewell as she creates jewelry and transforms canvas with acrylic paint, a bit of butane flame, and warm air, even the artist’s own breath gently moving the paint. With an artist’s eye and practice, Andrea has learned to trust color, viscosity, and technique to produce a work that surprises and delights the eye — even the artist’s own. What Andrea values most in the artistic process is that each piece is unique. The true joy found in art, she says, is in discovering which color will rise to the top, which ones complement each other best, and what patterns will emerge. For photos, Andrea selected the rich, vibrant colors of Autumn: pumpkin, raspberry, and green. These she poured onto the lower third of a canvas still wet with bright white acrylic. Using a small butane flame and a hair dryer, she pushed the paint and popped some paint bubbles until she had achieved an effect that pleased her artist’s eye. Some of those colors ran down the edges to a surface below. The drips add dimension to the canvas. Paint that April 16-29, 2021
fell free, once dried, will be carefully scraped and preserved in a journal from which Andrea will select oval, rectangular, heart-shaped, and circular swatches to fill costume jewelry. Necklaces, bracelets, and earrings become miniature natural wonders— just a bit of iridescent glory adding sparkle to an ensemble. These can be found on Andrea’s Facebook page, Controlled Chaos Canvases. Andrea considers the Lake her true home. She’s a Camdenton High graduate, but found her true love well before her senior year. At age 14, she met and later married Matt Fewell of Fewell’s Automotive, a repair shop established by Matt’s father. Together, Andrea and Matt have four boys. Andrea is their homeschool teacher. Formal art study is not what drew Andrea to paint. Rather art is in her nature. She says she could often be found in her dad’s garage “building things out of scrap wood and painting them.” Now her work includes furniture that she refinishes with the same poured paint techniques. She has made TV trays and footstools into fine art. These pieces as well as canvases can be commissioned to complete a décor. Similarly, functional coasters can become artistic “pop” pieces impervious to water, thanks to Andrea’s art and a marine-grade epoxy seal. Andrea has taught and will teach her techniques oneon-one or in groups no larger than 10. She enjoys sharing the spontaneity of the creative process with others as much as she enjoys explaining how she achieves an effect. VACATION NEWS 35

Art doesn’t just come on a canvas. Other pieces include jewelry and a unique footstool (below).
Those gorgeous feathers require a bit of chain rather than a paint brush, for example. Equally important to her art are natural elements such as “gravity, water, and fire.” These inspire the artist and move the paint to finished designs. Some of those designs are in the eye of the beholder. Buyers at Linn Creek’s Farmer’s Market or market days around the Lake often see a bird or a face they adore in the design, shapes that Andrea herself hadn’t seen until she shared her work with others. This is all part of the artistic discovery and joy in creating that drive the artist.
