Fishing workshop in mid-Missouri
T
MDC will offer two opportunities to attend a Discover Nature – Fishing fly fishing workshop this month in mid-Missouri. These free clinics will cover an introduction to equipment and hands-on skills practice. Register today to attend one of these workshops for ages 12 and older.
he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering an opportunity to attend a beginner fly fishing clinic in mid-Missouri this month. This free Discover Nature – Fishing workshop will teach the basics of fly fishing, including history of the sport, specialized tackle, and how to cast. Participants will then get an opportunity to practice their skills and do some fishing. “This is a great way to try something new with the family,” said MDC Angler Education Assistant Ashley Edwards. “If you like fishing but have been looking for more of a challenge, come on out and see just what fly fishing is all about. This is a beginner course, so no experience is needed, and this is definitely a great way to get together and have lots of fun!” All equipment will be provided for this free course, though participants are welcome to bring their own rod, reel, and tackle, if they wish. Participants should wear appropriate clothing for the weather, and bring water or something to drink if they want. This workshop is free and open to ages 12+. Participants age 16 and older must possess a valid fishing license. All participants must practice physical distancing and wear a mask covering their mouth and nose when unable to maintain at least six feet between each other. For more information about this program, contact Edwards at Ashley.Edwards@ mdc.mo.gov or (573) 815-7901, ext. 2968. Fishing is a great way for everyone to have fun outdoors, learn about conservation, and make memories in nature. DNF programs help Missourians gain the skills and confidence to go fishing on their own. No-Wake Zone Navigational restrictions will be in effect during the 2020 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout regatta. The no wake restriction for the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout event includes the main channel from the 31.5-mile mark to the 36-mile mark and will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday. Due to the number of spectator vessels expected at the event, additional navigational restrictions will be put into place on Saturday, August 29, only. An extended idle speed area will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., and will include the main channel from the 31.5-mile mark downstream to approximately the 21-mile mark. The extended idle speed area is in addition to the no wake restriction implemented for the event itself. The majority of the boating traffic exits the event in a downstream direction. Thus, the extended navigational restrictions will assist in maintaining a safe boating environment and preventing property damage. The Patrol will conduct enforcement operations throughout the restricted areas during the affected times. The race event takes place on August 29 and 30, 2020, with a significantly larger crowd expected on the first day. Boaters are encouraged to observe social distancing guidelines during the Shootout event. Watercraft operators must consider the effect their actions have on others: Share the waterway and use common sense, good judgment, and courtesy to ensure the safety of all. Life jackets save lives. LAKE OF THE OZARKS
T
he Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for the 32nd Annual Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals and registration is still open for this renowned lake area event! In March, the decision was made to move the event dates from May to September. The chamber has collaborated with the Bagnell Dam Strip Association and participants will have the opportunity to participate in a classic car cruise on Friday evening in conjunction with the Hot Summer Nights event. Organizers have decided to forgo the Bigfoot Monster Truck car smashing, bounce houses and children activities to ensure there are not large gatherings in one place. Social distancing is now the norm of 2020; with this being an outdoor event and with the removal of the crowd gathering activities, the event will allow for the recommendations from the CDC of social distancing. The Lake Area Chamber is pleased to announce, for their sixth year in a row, Summer USA is the Presenting Sponsor for the 32nd Annual Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals. “We are proud to be part of such a significant event which benefits the entire Lake area,” stated Joe Page, owner of Summer USA. The Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals is also famous for being the only car show in the Midwest that gives away a brand new muscle car every year, thanks to Lake Ozark Daybreak Rotary. The Magic Dragon Street Meet Nationals brings back the vintage era to the Historic Bagnell Dam Strip, with Rat Rods, muscle cars, a variety of classics, mixed in with a flash of new style and something for everyone to enjoy. The show officially begins on the Strip at noon on Friday, September 11th, 2020, as hundreds of show cars begin to arrive for the event. You can register your car online at www. MagicDragonCarShow.com or by calling the Lake Area Chamber of Commerce at (573)964-1008. August 20-September 4, 2020

RESTAURANT PROFILE
Camp Bagnell is making a comeback The buzz The village that gave Bagnell Dam its name was once a thriving town. Located on the banks of the Osage River, Bagnell was once known as the “Railroad Tie Capital of the World.” Thousands of people lived there when the dam was being built but it’s had a stroke of bad luck over the years with floods and fires nearly destroying the town. The vibe The campground and restaurant have been fixtures of the Lake landscape, even though it’s changed hands a few times over the years. The restaurant also burned down in 2011 but was back up and running thanks to return customers and the community’s support. Realtor Peggy Albers purchased the restaurant last year stating there are not too many chances to own a piece of history. During the summer you might be able to catch a live local or regional band playing on the stage outside. After completing renovations, they expect to open early in June serving lunch and dinner every day. The food Chef Sean Deitrick will head up the kitchen creating a new concept with his own ideas but also keeping some of the dishes that made Camp Bagnell famous. It will be a different experience than Deitrick’s other restaurant, Bend Grill & Bar, which is more upscale-casual but he says to expect an upgrade to the food. You’ll still be able to find a few favorites like catfish on the menu. The location 401 Old Bagnell Road, Eldon

Fall hunting info
M
issouri deer and turkey hunters can get the most current information on upcoming fall hunting from the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) 2020 Fall Deer and Turkey Hunting & Regulations Information booklet, available where permits are sold and online at huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fall-deerand-turkey-hunting-regulations-and-information. The booklet has detailed information on fall deer and turkey hunting seasons, limits, permits, managed hunts, regulations, conservation areas to hunt, post-harvest instructions, chronic wasting disease (CWD) updates, and more. Changes for the upcoming seasons, detailed in the booklet, include: • Flood-prone areas in southeast Missouri are closed to hunting, except waterfowl, during deer and turkey seasons when river levels exceed certain limits. • To slow the spread of CWD, there are new carcass transportation regulations. • Clark County has been added to the CWD Management Zone. • During Nov. 14–15, hunters who harvest a deer in the CWD Management Zone must take it on the day of harvest to a CWD sampling station. MDC is monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic and will re-evaluate by Nov. 1 mandatory CWD sampling requirements. For the latest information, please visit mo.gov/cwd. • The antler-point restriction has been removed for Clark County and inside the Columbia city limits. August 20-September 4, 2020
• Nonresident permit prices have gone up. • Hunters may no longer use a Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permit in Atchison County. • Hunters may now fill two Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits in Lincoln and Montgomery counties, and in Cass County outside the urban zone. • To qualify for no-cost resident landowner permits, you now must own at least 20 acres in one contiguous tract. • Nonresidents who own at least 75 acres in one contiguous tract in Missouri may now buy deer and turkey hunting permits at reduced prices. • To get landowner permits, you must submit information about your property by filling out a Landowner Permit Application. • Qualifying landowners may now receive two Resident Landowner Firearms Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits in Newton County. • Archery Antlerless Deer Hunting Permits may now be used in Scott County. • New managed deer hunts have been added, and others have been removed or modified. • Deer hunting regulations have changed for some conservation areas. • There is a new definition for handgun. Buy Missouri hunting and fishing permits from numerous vendors around the state, online at huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/ permits, or through MDC’s free mobile app, MO Hunting, available for download through Google Play or the App Store.

his 1800’s photograph gives a rare look back to the daily life in old Linn Creek. Taken from a building roof top, the photographer catches town folks at a time when it was a bustling county seat and prosperous river town. Old Linn Creek was a major wharf exporting many of the needs of life’s everyday necessities throughout the nation. A busy trade center for supplies, steamboats coming and going created a hub of activity along the shoreline. (Camden County Museum)

DAY TRIP
Head for the high country Adventure and relaxation in the mountains of North Carolina
By Marci DeWolf More Content Now
W
ith high temperatures bearing down on much of the country, this is a good time for a mountain getaway. The North Carolina High Country is just the place for cool fresh air, crisp breezes and refreshing waterfalls. High Country encompasses several small towns along the highest elevations of the Blue Ridge Parkway in the northwest part of the state. Families have been coming to the High Country for adventure and spectacular views since before the Civil War. The oldest attractions are areas of natural beauty such as The Blowing Rock, Linville Caverns and Grandfather Mountain. The most breathtaking views of the Blue Ridge Mountains are found at the majestic Grandfather Mountain and its exhilarating Mile High Swinging Bridge. When the wind blows the bridge actually “sings” in the same way a harmonica sounds. There are easy walking trails and naturalist programs to see wildlife in their natural habitat. Adventurers can scale ladders, climb steep rocks and edge along cliffs or hike to remote peaks. Calloway Peak on Grandfather Mountain is 5,946 feet above sea level. More daring exploits are found at Hawksnest, one of the largest zipline parks in the country. It has three swinging bridges and 20 adrenaline-pumping ziplines reaching heights of 200 feet. Participants appear to fly over trees, lakes and creeks at speeds up to 50 mph while watching panoramic mountain views below. Agri-tourism offers fun ways to experience life down on the farm. In addition to apple picking in the fall, visitors can learn about the production of Christmas trees at Sugar Plum Farm in Plumtree. Swinging Bridge Farm in Deepgap has a walking tour of its Christmas tree

farm. High Country has the largest production of Yule trees in the East. It has provided the White House Christmas trees for eight of the last 20 years. The streets of Blowing Rock are storybook sweet with quaint boutiques, independent restaurants, art galleries and antique shops. Memorial Park and gardens in the town’s center give a magical feel against the backdrop of the Parkway and Pisgah National Forest. Look for the Thursday farmer’s market through October. The town’s namesake — the Blowing Rock — is a unique outcrop formation with magnificent views and near-constant winds on Highway 321 South. Just outside of town, the Chetola Resort and Spa is an all-purpose vacation retreat. Located on 87 pristine acres, the name means “haven of rest” in Cherokee. Besides the main lodge, there are a small inn and condos on the estate. For rainy days, an indoor pool and recreation center are located in the main building. Timberlake’s Restaurant and
patio overlook Chetola Lake, a wellloved landmark for kayaking, paddle-boating and fishing. The resort is COVID-safety-conscious and offers many outside activities: guided fly-fishing trips, a sporting reserve, archery by the lake and evening bonfires. The 1891 Green Park Inn is a different world altogether. One of the Grand Manor Hotels of the Victorian age, it has catered to such luminaries as Annie Oakley, Margaret Mitchell and Eleanor Roosevelt. Photos of these and other celebrities line the walls of the long, elegant living room. The inn has its own garden, supplying fresh produce and herbs to the restaurant, the Chestnut Grille. All CDC guidelines and protocols are adhered to at High Country attractions, said Candice Cook of the regional visitors’ center NC High Country Host.Face masks are required in public in North Carolina.
