BOATING by Mitch Prentice & Joyce Miller, newsroom@lakesunonline.com
New offshore race this fall Offshore At The Ozarks to bring new entertainment October 2 & 3
W
ith so many lake events having to cancel in 2020 due to the COVID pandemic, it may come as a surprise to hear that a brand new event is coming to the lake this
October. Offshore At The Ozarks-Cat Edition will make its way to mid-Missouri October 2 & 3, bringing a new weekend boat race to the Lake of the Ozarks. Performance Boat Center, in collaboration with Offshore Powerboat Association, will serve as the title sponsor for the race, and Owner Mark Waddington says he feels “tremendously blessed”. Waddington says that he felt the lake was looking for a positive, new event this year amidst all of the cancellations, and is even more excited to give lake racers a chance to show off their talents. In most cases, Waddington says lake races are sponsored by the local cities involved, as well as business sponsors in the area. With many businesses making cost-saving choices in these tough times, Waddington says Performance worked alongside OPA racing to sponsor the race and make it a reality. The race will see both Super Stock and Supercat boats race in two classes, with two races on Friday for each class. Then, on Saturday, they will compete in a full lap race for the finish. Points will be added from Friday and Saturday to crown a winner. Currently, Waddington says they are expecting around 14-15 total racers. According to the regatta permit issued by the Missouri Highway patrol Water patrol Division, the race event permit is listed under an organization called “Lake Charity Poker Run” although the event is not a poker run, it’s an offshore race. It will be similar to Lake Race, but not near as many boats. Some residents were concerned that the race would impact the Big Bass Bash being held on the same weekend. Waddington confirmed that they were aware of the event, though were not responsible for the permit date decision, as this date was granted by the water patrol. However, he says the race should not be an issue as the September 4-17, 2020
Saturday racing won’t start until after 3:00 p.m., which follows the final weigh-in for the fishing competition. “I know how big that event is and I didn’t want to get in the way,” Waddington said. Waddington hopes the race will give lake residents and visitors a live-sporting event to enjoy that won’t require a large crowd. He says they plan to stream the races as well, with many public viewing locations and restaurants available. The race will take place right outside of Camden on the Lake, the same course as Lake Race. VACATION NEWS 11

Rumbles and roars of Bikefest
R
umbles and roars will echo across the Lake of the Ozarks on Wednesday, September 16 – Sunday, September 20, 2020, during the 14th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest. According to Tim Jacobsen, director of the Lake of the Ozarks Convention & Visitor Bureau and a member of the Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest committee, over 125,000 motorcycle enthusiasts attended Bikefest last year. More are expected to thunder into the Lake of the Ozarks this year to explore scenic rides, attend free concerts, participate in biker activities and roll through a “passport run” of local eateries, businesses and nightspots. Bikefest will host major events and vendor villages at Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson (Osage Beach), H. Toad’s at Camden on the Lake (Lake Ozark) and the historic Bagnell Dam Strip (Business Highway 54 in Lake Ozark). Other Lake Area restaurants and bars will also offer live music and special activities geared toward Bikefest visitors. Harley Davidson. Bikers and Bikefest fans have a wide array of lodging options during the five-day event - including campgrounds, RV parks, cabins, vacation condos and homes, full-service and family-owned resorts, plus hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts. Many of these lodging properties are offering special Bikefest rates. For a list of these properties and rates, visit LakeBikefest.com. “The Lake of the Ozarks is an ideal location to host Missouri’s largest motorcycle rally due to our central location and all the amazing activities the Lake has to offer,” said Jacobsen. “Visitors at Bikefest can also enjoy countless great restaurants and bars; many have live entertainment. We also have a lot of biker-friendly lodging facilities and campgrounds. Riding our scenic roads on a motorcycle is one of the best ways to experience all the natural beauty we have here at the Lake. There is nothing like riding in the Ozark hills. When it comes down to it, if you love motorcycles and want to take part in a friendly and fun atmosphere, the Lake of the September 4-17 2020
ON THE COVER Ozarks is the place to be for the 2020 14th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Bikefest.” It should be noted that the State of Missouri has passed a helmet law change that goes into effect on August 28, 2020 that anyone over the age of 26 with medical insurance will no longer be required to wear a motorcycle helmet. Compliments of Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson, Bikefest’ s official website. LakeBikefest.com, provides motorcycle riders with three printable maps of recommended scenic rides. These rides range from 84 to 115 miles and can take as long as two hours to complete. Riders can expect picturesque wooded landscapes, a tour of two of the area’s dazzling state parks and stunning glimpses and panoramic views of the sparkling Lake of the Ozarks. Full Throttle Magazine once again sponsors the Full Throttle Passport Program that takes riders on a tour of 24 different restaurants and nightspots in the Lake area. Bikefest patrons can obtain their passport at any of the participating businesses on the ride. These passports are stamped when riders visit the 24 locations. Bikefest visitors who collect all their passport stamps earn an entry into a drawing for a 2019 HarleyDavidson FLHP Road King Police motorcycle. Music and motorcycles are a perfect match, so it’s no surprise that a popular attraction at Bikefest is the lineup of live entertainment throughout the Lake Area. For a full list of bands and locations visit www.LakeBikefest.com. Throughout the event the center lane of the Strip will be blocked off for motorcycle parking only. There are numerous biker friendly establishments that are within walking distance that all offer live music and numerous types of food and beverage service. Another favorite of Bikefest visitors is the variety of booths and tents at vendor villages located at Camden on the Lake and Lake of the Ozarks Harley Davidson. These vendors will feature custom cycles and parts, detailing, airbrushing, tattoo artists, leather and other apparel, jewelry, food and much more “Meeting all the people who attend Bikefest is part of the fun for me,” said Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson owner and motorcyclist Jack Fleming. “It’s amazing to see all the custom bikes and all the gear that’s available to fellow bikers at the vendor villages.” There will also be vendors spread throughout the Bagnell Dam Blvd. during the event. Lake real estate sales boom
W
ith many lessstrict COVID restrictions seen throughout the state and an entire lake to enjoy, the Ozarks have seen an unprecedented real-estate sales boom in 2020. However, at least for now, school district Superintendents are unsure as to whether or not this will translate into increased student enrollment. Cindy Imhoff, Executive Vice President of the Bagnell Dam Association of REALTORS, shared some figures on exactly what kind of sales the lake has seen in real estate over the last four years (looking at the months of January to June in each respective year). In total sales, 2020 has so far topped all four years with 1,600 sales bringing in a volume of $371,100,581. This is $51,463,673 more than the same timeframe in 2019, which yielded $319,636,908. Even more telling, the only area of lake real estate sales that have gone down in both number of transactions and volume of sales is in homes worth over a million dollars (7% decrease in transactions, 13% decrease in volume of sales). This points directly to a trend in more residential, affordable housing being scooped up by those looking to move to the lake. With a 17% increase in transactions in Residential, villas and townhomes on the waterfront, as well as a 5% increase in transactions in residential, villas and townhomes offshore, the affordable market is seeing a dramatic increase. Imhoff says the Bagnell 30 VACATION NEWS
Dam Association of REALTORS does not keep a log of what kinds of families or individuals are moving into these properties, so the exact demographic increase being seen alongside the real estate boom is unknown. Even so, with more people moving to the lake of any demographic, the chances of more students also being relocated also increases. And with the school year ahead being as uncertain as any, this may ring some alarm bells for school districts looking to house these students in their hallways. Currently, the question of student population increase is not certain by the school districts of the lake. Camdenton R-III Superintendent Tim Hadfield says that while the school district is still enrolling students for the year ahead, they have also seen parents deciding to either homeschool this year due to the pandemic or leave the district entirely. With school starting next week, he says the official numbers of enrollment won’t be certain until day one. In Eldon, Superintendent Matt Davis was more certain that their number would not see an increase. He says that numbers are looking normal at this point, though the district will be able to better determine any growth by September. “In our school district, we don’t have second homes like other lake area schools so I don’t see us really having a large increase in enrollment,” Davis said. The only other Superintendent to respond was Morgan County R-II Superintendent
Steven Barnes, who confirmed that they too are not seeing an increase in enrollment at this time, though like the other districts, that may change in the coming month. For now, it seems the hou-
ing boom has not impacted lake schools, though as the pandemic continues and the uncertainty of in-person classes persists, this may change very quickly.
