DAY TRIP by Vicki Wood, newsroom@lakesunline.com
Grand Lake Wine Trail Cross the boarder for a road trip to taste some unique and flavorful wines.
G
rand Lake in Northeastern Oklahoma sits just about 30 miles past the Missouri/Oklahoma border. A spectacularly undeveloped waterway where commercial businesses and condominiums are less in presence than other lakes, Grand Lake is also home to some great wineries. Monkey Island Winery and Cottages stands out for its fruit wine from the bounty of their ranch. Also home to the Royal Horse Ranch established in 2010, Monkey Island Winery grows pears, peaches, and blackberries to produce fruity offerings. Their Grand Lake Vineyards were planted in 2004 with Cynthiana/Norton, Chardonel, and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The owner is well educated in the art of wine production, as well as being an avid vintage collector. The new tasting room serves around 30 varieties, with unusual choices such as Pie Pumpkin, California Cherry, among many more not usually seen at wineries. The favorites like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot all have clever names exclusive to the Monkey Island label adding to fun at the tasting room. Groups giggle at each other when they order “Drawing A Blanc” sauvignon blanc, or “Chard-N-Hay” their crafted chardonnay. In addition to wines, Monkey Island Winery hosts wine themed cottages with a working horse ranch, making the vineyard and winery a destination to go visit and stay awhile. Monkey Island is worth a visit in itself with a lot of interesting landmarks. The Shangri-La Resort on the island has a boat that belonged to John F. Kennedy on display in their lobby, the RESTOFUS. His prior boat was named TENOFUS. As the family grew, they purchased the bigger speedboat and aptly named it reflecting the expansion of the Kennedy clan. The Shangri-La Resort is the center of activity for food and fun on the island. A world class golf course, restaurants, and spa are included with lodging.
October 16- November 5, 2020
Also located on Monkey Island, The Shebang is a menagerie of eatery, shopping, and dancing, all in one funky brick complex accented with flamingo pink posts and doors. Steaks and seafood, along with all sorts of creatively named dishes with New Orleans flair are on the menu. The wine list is extensive, that’s why they are on my list. With 40 wines, and 5 champagnes, one can only dream of ordering the Dom Perignon that is offered.
VACATION NEWS 11
DAY TRIP Monkey Island Winery is located at 55800 E 273 Rd, Monkey Island, OK 74331 They can be found online at https://www. royalhorseranch.net/winery--cottages.html On the southern tip of Grand Lake wine lovers will find Okeozark Winery. Sitting in the foothills of the Oklahoma Ozark Mountains, this for makes a few original wines that can’t be found elsewhere. They have taken their Swedish, English, and French heritage into account when producing their family recipe of dry, sweet, and semi-sweet labels. Riesling, chambourcin, Fredonia, and Mars variety vines flourish on their 200 year old farm property, lending to the authenticity of their label. Fruit and sparkling wines round out the list at Okeozark Winery. The Arkansas Red Cedar Tasting room is a thing of beauty. Properly named, the entire room is paneled and furnished in red cedar. Tastings are given by appointment only. The family recipe wines are unapologetically crafted in the Ozark tradition of homemade wine, with the owner’s family roots running back to the 1800s in wine making. The blue metal building shop sits at 12273 East 470 Road, Salina, OK 74365 They can be found online at www.okeozarkwinery1.com Heading north on Interstate 44, about an hour west of Grand Lake is Vogel Family Vineyards. The first thing that grabs visitors at Vogel Vineyards is the artistic label. It’s as fine a label as I’ve ever seen, even in the Sonoma 12 VACATION NEWS

Valley of California. Next comes the grounds that are a landscaped paradise above the Kansas hills. Founded in 2004, the vineyards are one of the hardest worked fields that I’ve witnessed. It seems as if millions of grapes are being harvested here including Cabernet, Sirah, Merlot, and Malbec varieties. If you are a sweet wine lover, this is probably not your kind of wine. California style wines are full bodied, with little sweetness for the Midwestern palate. The Vogel family proudly declares that they wanted to grow and produce wines not normally grown in the Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma area. Their mission was also to produce full-bodied wines that are uniquely pleasant to a wider range of palates
Where to go Shangri-La Resort 29975 S 566 Rd Afton, OK The Shebang is located at 29975 South 566 Road Monkey Island, OK Vogel Family Vineyards is located at: 116 Hillcrest Drive, Galena, KS. Online at www.facebook.com@vogelfamilyvineyards
Vogel Family Vineyards is a fine replica of what the owners learned when visiting Napa Valley in California. It was their goal to fashion the winery after the tremendously beautiful wine estates there. They have succeeded, and outdone a few! With 6.5 acres of vines, the property makes a nice living from the small batch winery. The owners have recently listed Vogel Family Vineyards for sale, and would
like to see other wine lovers interested in carrying on the business. Their wine bar in the stately mansion continues to be open. Tastings are offered by appointment only. Walking the meticulously kept grounds at this vineyard is the closest experience there is in the Midwest to the California wine scene.

GOLF by Paul Leahy, PGA Golf Pro and the Director of The Oaks Golf Course at Margaritaville Lake Resort
The Lakes Longest Golf Holes
E
ver wonder what it would be like to be a tour player? Hitting drives 300-plus yards, hitting wedge from 170, and shooting 65 like you’re playing miniature golf. You may never hit it like a tour player but you can experience the length of the average holes on the PGA tour by playing some of the Lake’s longest holes the next time you visit. My mantra has always been “Play it Forward” and play the tee that is appropriate for the distance of your average drive, but next time you play one of these courses maybe, just maybe play these holes from the tips to see how good these professionals are that you watch on television every week. The Lake’s longest course from its tips is Osage National from the Palmer Tees. The Mountain/River combination comes in at 7,149 yards in length and the Mountain/Links combination comes in at a staggering 7,165 yards, easily out-

GOLF distancing The Club at Porto Cima’s length of 7,036 yards from its back tees. Conversely the shortest course to call the Lake home is Indian Rock Golf Club measuring 6,427 yards, followed closely by the Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort at 6,432 yards. Let’s take a look at some of the longest holes in detail. The longest Par-4 at the Lake was an obvious choice, I thought. I figured hole 18 at the Club at Porto Cima, measuring 461 yards, had to be longest at the Lake, but I was wrong. Playing 484 yards at its maximum, hole number 8 on the Mountain Course at Osage National Resort tops this list. This demanding tee shot requires precise accuracy and tremendous length off the tee. Play is dramatically downhill on the second shot to a huge green, which is easily 50 plus yards from front to back. If you are blessed to hit the fairway you are treated to one of the best panoramic views you will find at any course, anywhere. If 484 yards wasn’t enough, to make it a bit more challenging, the tee ball is technically blind. You can’t see the fairway and you must trust your aim as you hit toward the trees in the foreground that frame the hole, hoping to get a favorable bounce left on this left to right dogleg. Arnold knew what he was doing when he designed this gem, making this a signature hole at Osage National. Even if you’re not playing from this tee, take a minute and walk out to see the view or lack of from the tips on this great hole. Let’s take a look at the par-3s. Once again I penciled in the famous 4th hole at the Cove, known as “Witches Cove,” to be
the longest playing at 227 yards. This time I not only missed but this hole came in a distant third behind the 7th hole at Lake Valley Country Club measuring 228 yards. The winner, measuring a staggering 239 yards, is hole number 8 at the Golf Club at Deer Chase. To make matters worse, this monster par-3 plays 239 yards uphill making it feel like you have to fly the ball 250 yards-plus just to make it green high. Depending on where the pin is situated it could play an additional 20 yards further if the pin is located back of center. They have multiple tee boxes on this hole so thankfully the tees are not there very often, but I have hit my share of drivers here. If you want to feel like you’re playing on tour with the pros, play those driveable par 4s well here’s your chance … play this par 3 like a par 4 and swing away. I bet you make more 4s than 3s. You might be thinking the 559 yard 14th at the Club at Old Kinderhook or the 561 yard 3rd hole at Oaks at Margaritaville would top the list of longest par-5s but you would be wrong. We once again head to Osage National and look at number 9 on the River Course, measuring 626 yards. R&A figures report the average driving distance for a male amateur to be 215 yards and male amateurs with handicaps of five or below only average 240 yards, so this hole will be a lot to handle. Taking those figures into consideration, the average male amateur would have 411 yards into the green for his second, and after the third if he were fortunate, he would still have over 200 yards to the green. Now you think of tour pros where

GOLF the longest hitters would be challenging this hole in two makes you understand just how good they are. To make matters worse there is trouble right and left off the tee, and the fairway narrows considerably by the green leaving you a very small area to run ball onto the green. The green is easily 40 to 50 yards deep with a large hump in the middle separating the two tiers of this green, making this a very demanding hole no matter what tee you decide to play. I am not an advocate for playing golf from its farthest point as I want golf to be as fun, enjoyable and as fast as possible. When I got to move up to the senior tees I took full advantage and my score has reflected it by having a lot more scoring opportunities instead of putts for par. Looking at the length of some of these holes and the scores they post on a weekly basis on tour will give you an idea of how good they really are. If you look at the yardage at most tour events at well over 7,000 yards and the Mountain/Links coming in at 7,165 yards it would probably rank toward the bottom for total length of courses that are played. It is a challenge to try to play from this yardage to see how you stack up, but I guarantee you will have more fun playing the tees that are suited for you. Here’s to making more birdies and less X’s by “Playing it Forward.”

5 kayaking opportunities in central Missouri Enjoy mild weather and see fall colors from the water this autumn.
T
he Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) encourages Missourians to find ways to connect with nature this fall, in ways consistent with COVID19 health guidelines. Careful use of conservation areas and canoeing or kayaking on public waters in Missouri can provide excellent opportunities to embrace isolation, get some exercise, and reap the health benefits of spending time in nature. Since COVID-19 imposed lockdowns and social-distancing requirements this spring, consumers have flocked to paddle sports. According to market research from The NPD Group, sales of kayaks, paddleboards, rafts, and canoes faced declines prior to the pandemic, but have spiked in 2020. “Kayaking is a great way to get exercise and enjoy nature, and there are hundreds of public boat accesses on rivers and lakes in Missouri,” said MDC Recreational Use Specialist A.J. Campbell. Whether watching wildlife, catching a few fish, or just relaxing and taking in the fall colors as trees begin to change, MDC offers plenty of recreational paddling opportunities, just a short drive from home. Always paddle safely on Missouri waters: • Wear a Personal Floata-

Gasconade River
Missouri’s longest river completely within the state winds nearly 300-miles from its source near Hartville to the Missouri River only 120 miles away. For a tame, daylong float in Osage County, putin at Rollins Ferry Access and take-out at Pointers Creek Access. This 7.4 mile float offers stunning views of steep bluffs and forested hills. Both accesses offer primitive camping sites and disabled-accessible privies. Lamine River
This Missouri River tributary meanders through rolling farmland, and provides good fishing and wildlife viewing opportunities. Three river accesses within Lamine River Conservation Area offer the following options for floating near Otterville: • 5-mile float — put-in at access just north of Old Route 50; take-out at Wildlife Road bridge. • 5-mile float — put-in at access just below US Highway 50; take-out at access just north of Old Route 50. Great for kayakers of all skill levels, this stretch of the Lamine River has sand and gravel bars, riffles and pools. May encounter some dragging in riffles when water levels are low. Perry Phillips Park Lake
This small, accessible lake presents an ideal option for beginners. The City of Columbia owns and maintains this lake in partnership with MDC, who manages the fishery. The lake offers a boat ramp, courtesy dock, a disabled-accessible fishing dock, restrooms, and a two-mile walking trail loop with picnic-table shelters. Good fish populations of bass, bluegill, and catfish make this a great place to practice kayak fishing. Teal Lake Park
The City of Mexico owns and maintains this 80-acre lake in partnership with MDC’s management of the fishery. Another excellent community lake for beginner paddlers and kayak fishing. Teal Lake offers a boat ramp, fishing dock, pavilion with picnic tables, and disabledaccessible parking and restrooms. The lake contains bass, October 16- November 5, 2020
catfish, crappie, and sunfish. A walking path to the lake’s island and a trailhead to asphalt walking paths in neighboring Green Estate Park. Lowe (William) Conservation Area also abuts the park, which features a half-mile walking loop through a restored prairie — a great place to view wildflowers and songbirds. Binder Community Lake
MDC owns and manages this 155-acre lake in Jefferson City. It features a boat ramp, three docks, a disabledaccessible fishing jetty and restrooms. The lake contains bass, catfish, crappie, and sunfish. Jefferson City owns and manages the surrounding 644-acre Binder Park, which offers playgrounds, RV camping, pavilions, picnic shelters and tables, as well as hiking and biking trails. Learn more about these, and other public paddling opportunities at nature.mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/ places, download the MO Outdoors App for mobile devices, and get a copy of A Paddler’s Guide to Missouri from the MDC Nature Shop. New pizzeria serves by the slice
P
izza is big business. American’s pizza market generated an estimated $47 billion in revenue in 2019, according to a report from MuchNeeded.com. Americans at the Lake added their fair share of those dollars. Now in 2020, the Lake has another pizza place to enrich not only the economy, but appetites, too. Located just above the dam, Dam Good Slice offers big pizzas, New York style. A New York pizza crust is thinner than most original crust pizzas, but only just thick enough to hold hot cheese, veggies, and meat in place while a wide slice, folded in the middle, is lifted with one hand to an open mouth. That crust should give way when bitten, but still hold its shape and delicious ingredients. That’s the kind of pizza that owners Bryan and Derrick Deitrick, father and son, wanted to share at the Lake. They brought in Rick Massie as head chef to get the job done. He can often be seen entertaining diners as he throws the dough higher and higher in order to aerate and stretch it for best texture. Massie crafted a sauce to complement the meat and cheeses. According to Deitrick, it’s just a touch sweeter than others, a good contrast to the savory ingredients enjoyed by pizza lovers everywhere. Dam Good Slice also serves sandwiches and salads, including a gyro sandwich and an Aegean salad. Both feature in-house gyro meat shaved from the hive. So does the Aegean pizza. Deitrick says October 16- November 5, 2020
Ca
authentic flavors and fresh gyro are important at Dam Good Slice. He wants the restaurant to be a place known for fun and good food. Completing a lunch or dinner meal of pizza, sandwich, or salad, customers can choose from an array of craft beers, standard brands, and cocktails at a brand new bar built for the Dam Good Slice. Whether seated at that bar, on the patio outside, or a table indoors, customers enjoy live music all weekend, every weekend. As the weekend winds down, they can buy a blue solo cup for $10 to enjoy “Bottomless PBR (Pabst Blue Ribbon) Sundays.” One room in the new restaurant and bar is dedicated to vintage arcade games. A pool table and classic electronic games such as Golden Tee Golf, Skee Ball, Old School Shuffleboard, and Foosball are waiting for an afternoon kids’ party or nighttime adult competition. Dam Good Slice also has space for businesses to meet. The Lake Chamber has been holding a meeting there, and other groups are welcome to set a time and date for their meetings. Deitrick was a convention manager for 12 years prior to partnering with his dad to make Dam Good Slice come to life. The staff that helped build a new bar and kitchen while refurbishing and renovating the building space is on hand to serve and greet customers now. They may not be family in the technical sense, but they are a Dam Good Slice family. They welcome customers to feel at home and eat good food made from high-end ingredients, including that gyro meat. Dam Good Slice Pizza Restaurant and Bar 1097 Bagnell Dam Blvd., Lake Ozark 573-693-9954 Open Daily 11 a.m.-1 a.m. Monday through Saturday Sunday close midnight. Kitchen closes at 10 p.m.

FALL colors
M
issouri will continue to offer beautiful views for outdoor social distancing as the fall season gets underway. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offers weekly online fall color updates from agency foresters all over the state at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor. “The fall color report is a great resource for those wanting to enjoy the changing foliage,” said MDC Community Forester Ann Koenig. “It shows users where trees are beginning to turn and also suggests the best places to view the changing leaves.” Generally, the changing of the leaves is predictable, but it can vary from year to year depending on the weather. Koenig explained that a windy fall or early hard freeze can dampen the fall color in trees due to the fact the leaves blow off the trees or freeze. Chilly autumn nights are key to leaves changing color. Sugars produced by photosynthesis become trapped inside leaves. Those sugars are the building blocks for the rich red, yellow, orange, and purple pigments. Cooler nights cause the breakdown of green pigments, allowing the fall colors to show through. Missouri trees first begin changing color in the northern part of the state, then move southward across the state. Sassafras, sumac, and Virginia creeper are some of the earliest to change in midSeptember. In late September, black gum, bittersweet, and dogwood begin turning. “Bright, cloudless autumn days are ideal for a good display of fall color,” Koenig noted. “And, as a general rule, I mark about the third week in October as a good time to be paying attention to fall color for Mid-Missouri. Colors are usually fading and leaves are falling by the end of the month.”

Missouri’s fall color can be enjoyed from almost anywhere. “MDC’s conservation areas or Missouri state parks offer great scenic views for the public to enjoy the changing leaves,” said Koenig. The public can enjoy fall foliage through camping, driving tours, hiking, or even canoeing or floating. And fall color isn’t limited to trees. Prairies and roadsides display beautiful shades of gold, purple, olive, and auburn with autumn wildflowers, shrubs, and grasses. In cities and towns, enjoy places with mature trees, such as older neighborhoods, parks, and even cemeteries. MDC’s weekly fall color update, available at mdc.mo.gov/fallcolor, includes what kinds of trees are turning and suggestions on the best places to view them. The updates run September through November. 36 VACATION NEWS
