A Pirate’s Life for Me Captain Scalawag releases new activity book for buccaneers

E

very time Tim Williams, better known as Captain Scalawag, sails the high seas for his interactive pirate treasure hunt stage show, dozens of crew members tag along for an adventure down the Gravois Arm of the Lake. Taking off from Jolly Rogers Grub N Grog onboard the 65-foot Calypso pirate ship they’ll have to make landfall to hunt for buried treasure. For nearly 20 years, Williams has been playing this character making appearances at local events, libraries, school assemblies, charity events and pretty much everything inbetween. It all came to a standstill earlier this year due to COVID, so Williams had to think of other creative ways to continue to reach his audience and entertain fans. With the help of his friend and award-winning illustrator Glen Mullaly (and Glen’s wife Joanne), Williams published a pirate-themed activity book full of puzzles, pictures to color and characters. “Captain Scalawag’s Treasure Chest” can be found on Amazon for $7.95. Williams is quick to credit Mullaly, saying the book would not exist without his contribution. “Glen was kind enough to be willing to put together many of the illustrations he had already done along with some new pirate-themed illustrations and content,” Williams said. “I readily admit that the book would not exist if it weren’t for Glen’s talent and kindness in allowing this pirate to shanghai his work and to add a few ideas of my own. I cannot thank him enough.” Mullaly has worked on everything from “Star Wars,” “My Teacher is an Alien,” “Sixth-Grade Alien” book series and “McDonald’s Fun Times.” (Glenmullaly.com and on Facebook Glen Mullaly Illustration.) “This has been an incredibly difficult and strange year, to say the least,” Williams said. “So while I wasn’t able to appear and pirate (this year), I have never stopped looking toward the horizon. I hope somehow this book, so wonderfully illustrated by Glen, inspires children of all ages to use their imagination and their creativity, to hope for a better tomorrow and to look forward to many happy adventures ahead. December 4, 2020-January 21, 2021

As we pirates say, “Fair winds and following seas always! Now bring me that horizon!” Williams has lived in the Lake area for most of his life, except for a few years going to college to earn a degree in television and film and working for a short time for the state of Missouri in the Missouri Film Office. Locally he has been seen performing for the Lake Area Performing Arts Guild’s stage productions, as the Scarecrow in “The Wizard of Oz,” Lazer Wolf in “Fiddler on the Roof,” and Willy Wonka in “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka.”

Q&A with Capt. Scalawag What gave you the inspiration for this book, and why did you write it?

I always enjoyed books growing up, including coloring and puzzle books when I was younger. It’s also really important to me that children learn to use their imaginations and be creative. The book was a way to blend those things together in that it is a coloring book, a sketchbook and a puzzle book all in one. Plus, it has pirate themed content, which is something near and dear to me black heart!

VACATION NEWS 11

FEATURE What types of things are featured in the book?

The book is filled with wonderful coloring pages, illustrated puzzles and brain teasers as well as guided sketch pages, allowing kids of all ages to use their imagination and draw something in the book. There is, of course, a Captain Scalawag pirate thread throughout, even showing you how to make your very own pirate hat. I’m also proud of the Captain Scalawag original poem “The Sea Beastie” that Glen illustrated so well. We tried to put something in the book for everyone to enjoy. As Glen so aptly put it on the title page, “A practical compendium of fantastical diversions, enigmatic amusements and hue-rrific pursuits!” What are your future plans? Do you have other books in mind you want to complete?

I do have plans for a few more books. I have two pirate-themed storybook ideas I’m working on as well as a book of illustrated spooky poems based on characters from my “Castle Vlad” show. I also write, produce, direct, perform and edit an Internet micro-series called “Castle Vlad,” which is a fun-filled throwback to horror-hosted shows of the 60s and 70s. It’s as if Vlad the Impaler of history is a vampire hosting a low budget TV show for KRYP-TV and trying to figure out how to navigate this century and eventually take over the world with his castle of monsters. It’s a little spooky but also hopefully funny and for all ages. Find it on Facebook at Castle Vlad or on YouTube search Neatocoolville - KRYP-TV - Castle Vlad. And, it seems I’m always working on ideas, props and a script for the interactive pirate stage show and treasure hunt at Jolly Rogers. I write a new script for it every year.

Golf lessons and custom club fitting are available by appointment for $75 per hour from PGA professional Larry Salsman, and Derek Akers. Keep your game in shape this winter with a simulator membership. Three options for membership are available featuring week-day play hours ranging from four to 12 hours per month. New member referral incentives and $15 guest passes are standard with all membership options. Use the full Trackman analytics to take your game to the next level this season. Memberships start at $100 per month. Tee times are recommended and can be reserved online at www.lozgolflounge.com for $25 per half-hour of simulator time. Simulator time is sold by the half-hour and is not charged by the number of people. Block an hour or two and bring your friends and share the cost. Bring your own clubs or use the clubs provided — it’s up to you. The average time for four players to play 18 holes is around three-and-a-half to four hours. Food and drink is available at Wicked Willie’s, so come and enjoy an hour or two of recreation, fun, food and golf!

RESTAURANT PROFILE by Mitch Prentice

Eldon’s hidden gem at PC Tacos

E

very small town hopes to attract that certain business or restaurant that becomes a must-visit. For Eldon, PC Tacos is becoming that spot. Ask most people in town for a good lunch or dinner idea, and more likely than not, you’ll get the suggestion to try that little place down E 3rd St. For Patti Wieskamp, the journey started in Reno, Nevada. There was a restaurant there that she would take her kids to where they would sprinkle parmesan in the tacos. Wieskamp says they always loved their food and wanted to try making them for herself at home. While trying to recreate the tacos, she says she accidentally fried some of the parmesan cheese onto the tortilla shell and created something new, something unique. Thus, the original PC Taco was formed. For those who haven’t had a chance to go to PC Tacos yet, PC stands for parmesan crusted. The tacos are all made fresh and one of the first steps is to fry a layer of parmesan cheese onto the outside before throwing the remaining ingredients inside. Though a small twist on the typical taco formula, the results are truly something special. The restaurant also serves a number of different Mexican dishes, such as burritos, nachos and more. Wieskamp, along with her son Corey Schuhmacher, moved to the Eldon area a decade ago and got fed up with working at a department store. She says she always dreamed of opening a business of her own but never had a solid plan for it. One day, she and Schuhmacher made a batch of these tacos and took them to work, handing them out to coworkers. The response was very positive. They decided it was time to move on the idea and find a place to call their own. In Sept. 2019, PC Tacos opened up and saw success immediately. “We thought to ourselves, ‘What does Eldon need?,” Wieskamp said. “It didn’t need another diner, it didn’t need another antique store. We decided to try our idea and open a Mexican to-go restaurant. We thought, ‘Let’s see how it goes.’” Being open just over a year now, both Wieskamp and Schuhmacher have felt the local impact the restaurant has had. Wieskamp says she feels the restaurant has built a reputation on providing great food and being something different. Schuhmacher says he wasn’t so sure at first how the restaurant would be received, but that worry has dissipated. Now, he feels that Eldon is happy to have a spot that people are proud to share as their own. “Of course, we wanted people to care and we wanted people to come back, but we never thought it would be some-

RESTAURANT PROFILE thing that people would be like ‘Oh, this is the place to go.’,” Schuhmacher said. With that in mind, the pair have set a goal to continue being a place that Eldon can feel proud of. They hope to continue to grow and are hoping to expand their staff and possibly even the size of the restaurant heading into 2021. Of course, no business was ready for the devastating effects felt by COVID throughout 2020, but PC Tacos was able to persevere through the toughest times and is feeling confident that, having weathered the storm, they will come out even stronger. More than anything else, they want to continue providing the human experience of coming into the restaurant and seeing the same two faces serving food every day. The pair hopes those who have not had the opportunity to try PC Tacos will come by and give it a shot. “People can come here and know when they come in that they are gonna see the same faces every day and I think that makes them happy. That’s the human experience, that’s what people care about,” Schuhmacher said. Orders can be made over the phone or in-person at the restaurant.

Brumley Swinging Bridge placed on National Historic Register

T

he Brumley Swinging Bridge is now officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places, thanks to the diligence of a group of Brumley locals. The bridge was designated on Oct. 8, with the Brumley Save the Historical Swinging Bridge organization receiving the certificate of designation Nov. 4. The registration has been filed with Miller County Commissioner’s office and gives the bridge opportunity for grants to maintain the bridge, and repair aging components. The larger of the two swinging bridges is known officially as the Grand Auglaize Bridge, with the smaller swinging bridge not qualifying due to flat flooring replacement, thus altering its original construction. The 500-foot bridge was built in 1931 by Joseph A. Dice, only planning for the bridge to last for 60 years at the most. It is now 89 years old, according to Miller County Museum archives, and still swaying gently. Dice, of Warsaw, built as many as 40 bridges in Missouri in his career, seven of them alone built between 1905 and 1930 in Miller County. All of his bridges were 14 feet wide and did a lot of his planning work by “feel” with a ball and twine for measuring. When the highway department required Dice to begin submitting blueprints for his bridges, he retired. Incidentally, Dice only had a 4th grade education, apprenticed his knowledge in Benton County, and sourced his materials for each bridge with local supplies, only ordering the wire as necessary from outside the area. Locals don’t think twice about crossing the rusty, creaking one-lane bridge by car, but newcomers park their cars in the gravel and walk across, marveling at the structure with no supports underneath, and the sometimes rushing creek waters below. It is one of six remaining wire suspension bridges in Miller County. The historic register designation effectively “saved” the bridge, which was in danger of closing due to lack of funding to maintain it’s cables and structure, which had been rated “poor” condition by engineering companies in 2018. The 3-ton capacity continues to restrict vehicular traffic over Auglaize creek, connecting the Brumley area to the rural Linn Creek area. Ameren Missouri has donated money for bridge maintenance, and the Save the Bridge group is hoping for other donations to come in. Save the Historical Swinging Bridge Organization is responsible for the nomination to the National Historic Register. They have been holding monthly meetings for almost two years, and sponsoring clean up days for the bridge parking lots and primitive campground. Kelly Stallings, Mark, Joyce, and Victoria Beabout spearhead the committee, with Stallings spending hours filling out nomination forms and researching bridge history, including 29 pages of written history for the nomination process on bridge builder Joseph Dice. Locals have used the bridge for generations for photo opportunities to mark life events such as weddings, prom, graduations, and family reunions. It’s a landmark for Brumley residents who fondly remember days of fishing and canoeing the creek below, parking with a date, or picnicking the grounds with their kids. The National Register of Historic Places is administered in Washington, DC, after passing through a nomination process within the state through Missouri’s Historic Preservation Council, along with the Department of Natural Resources State Historic Preservation division. The National Historic Register placement saved the bridge for generations to come with appropriate repairs and maintenance now ensured. 38 VACATION NEWS
