It can get downright hot in July at Lake of the Ozarks. Not everyone has easy access to the Lake, so we’ve come up with a few spots that you can get to easily in order to cool off . Don’t forget to pack a cooler with plenty of cold drinks, snacks and sunscreen. It wouldn’t hurt to have a fi rst-aid kit handy and make sure to wear a life jacket. Many of these locations are secluded.

ON THE COVER 1. Tunnel Dam Whistle Shallows Located on Route U off West Highway 54 south of Macks Creek in the Edith area, The Whistle is an area of shallows that are part of the three-mile-long “Lake Niangua” created by Tunnel Dam on the upper end of the Big Niangua River. Gravel bars make great base for swimming. Have a picnic or put in with your kayak or canoe here as well.

2. Swinging Bridges To step back in time and enjoy a summer’s day, travel Swinging Bridges Road for an old-fashioned swim in the creek. The two swinging bridges on this road connect Highway 42 in Miller County, west of Brumley, and Route A in Camden County that leads to Highway 54 in Linn Creek. In addition to the cool historic bridges, these sites — one on the Grand Glaize Creek and the other on Mill Creek — are

also great swim spots. The Brumley Auglaize Swinging Bridge is no longer safe for drivers, or even pedestrians so you’ll have to pull over and access from a safe area.

3. Coffman Beach On the North Shore, Coff man Beach Access is a great place to take the family for a swim. Located near the 2.5 mile marker of the Gravois Arm or off Lake Road Y-20 south of Eldon, this Missouri Department of Conservation area off ers a picnic area and courtesy dock and boat ramp.

4. McCubbins Point The Grand Glaze Arm is most well known for Party Cove — which is actually Anderson Hollow Cove at the 3.5 mile marker — but go on past that cove to fi nd quiet serenity in the upper reaches of this arm surrounded by Lake of the

Grand Glaize Beach in Osage Beach. LAKE SUN FILE 14 | AUGUST 6 - 19, 2021 | VACATION NEWS

Ozarks State Park. McCubbins Point, part of the park’s Fort Leonard Wood Recreation Area, around the 7.5 mile marker is a great place to anchor for a swim. Many coves in that upper part of the arm off er peace and quiet.

5. State Park Public Beach Lake of the Ozarks State Park also has two great public beaches - Public Beach #1 and Grand Glaize Beach. For swimming, our favorite is PB #1 located near the 9.5 mile marker of the Grand Glaize Arm or off of Highway 134 by land. It is more secluded than Osage Beach’s Grand Glaize Beach. In addition to a protected cove location that’s great for swimming, there’s a marina where you can also rent canoes, kayaks and paddle boats. If you want to stick closer to “home,” Grand Glaize Beach is right in the heart of Osage Beach with a marina, picnic area and hiking trails close-by. m

A perfect fi shing trip can be attained if you bring the essentials for your day on the water at Lake of the Ozarks. Being prepared with the right equipment and other essentials is the key to having a successful day of fi shing. Whether you are a novice angler or a seasoned pro, you increase your odds of catching fi sh by bringing the right stuff with you on the lake. The right rod, reel and line for the species of fi sh you are pursuing are the most essential tackle you need to catch fi sh. If you prefer catching panfi sh such as bluegill and crappie, you should bring an ultralight, light or medium-light action rod and spincast or spinning reel spooled with 2-, 4- or 6-pound monofi lament or fl uorocarbon line for casting the lightweight baits you will be using. Bass fi shing requires a 6- to 8-foot medium or heavy action casting rod and a baitcast reel Whether you are a fi lled with 10- to 25-pound novice angler or a monofi lament, fl uorocarbon or braid line for throwing seasoned pro, you heavy lures such as jigs, spinincrease your odds nerbaits and crankbaits. Bass anglers can also use smaller of catching fi sh by soft plastic baits with 6- to 7foot medium or mediumbringing the right heavy action spinning rods stuff with you on and spinning reels spooled with 6-, 8- or 10-pound the lake. monofi lament or fl uorocarbon line. If you want to catch heavyweight catfi sh, you better bring an 8- or 10-foot heavy action casting or spinning rod and a baitcast or spinning reel with a large capacity spool fi lled with 30- to 100-pound monofi lament or braided line. Novice anglers should bring along live bait to ensure having a good day on the water. Crickets, mealworms and earthworms are excellent choices for bluegill and other sunfi sh, while minnows are the best option for crappie. The best baits for bass are large minnows, crayfi sh and nightcrawlers. Catfi sh will bite a variety of baits including, nightcrawlers, cut shad or sunfi sh, minnows, crayfi sh, goldfi sh and prepared baits. A tackle box full of various size hooks, sinkers and bobbers is essential for fi shing with live bait. Advanced crappie and bass anglers or anyone who prefers catching and releasing fi sh usually rely on artifi cial lures to prevent from deep hooking their catch. Savvy crappie anglers stock their tackle boxes with a mixture of jigheads in sizes ranging from 1⁄ 32 to 1⁄ 8 ounce and soft plastic grubs, swimbaits and minnow-shaped imitators.

FISHING A mind-boggling assortment of artifi cial lures is available for catching bass at the lake. The best way to determine which lures to bring for bass is to read the Lake Sun Leader’s weekly fi shing report or visit a local baitand-tackle store to fi nd out which lures produce best for the time of year you will be fi shing the lake. For instance, the best summertime lures for Lake of the Ozarks bass are plastic worms, jigs, deep-diving crankbaits and swimbaits. A good landing net is also essential because you never know when you will hook into that once-in-a-lifetime lunker. I lost the biggest crappie I have ever hooked at Lake of the Ozarks because I didn’t have my landing net handy. When I tried to haul the fi sh over the side of the boat, my jig popped out of the fi sh’s mouth and it fl opped back into the lake. Losing a trophy fi sh can quickly turn your perfect day on the water into a heartbreaking experience you would rather forget. Bringing the essentials for your next day on the water could result in a successful fi shing trip you will never forget. Gardening has many rewards, says David Trinklein, state horticulture specialist for University of Missouri Extension. “One of them is the satisfaction of sharing your plant knowledge with others.” The MU Extension Master Gardener program is designed to do just that, Trinklein said. “Its motto, ‘helping others learn to grow,’ emphasizes service to others as the program’s main objective.” A new session of online Master Gardener training begins Aug. 23. “While not meant to replace in-person training, which still is conducted in many Missouri counties, online classes represent another way to go through the core training required of all MU Extension Master Gardeners,” he said. The course is taught by Trinklein and MU Extension horticulture specialist Sarah Denkler. Classes are delivered through the Canvas learning management system as a series of scripted and narrated video presentations. Students work through 14 learning modules at their own pace. A composite score of 70% on chapter quizzes is needed to pass the course. Topics covered include basic botany, soils and plant nutrition, vegetable gardening, fruit production, landscape design, woody ornamental plants, herbaceous ornamental plants, turf management, insect and disease management, and pesticide safety. Core training is the fi rst step toward certifi cation as an MU Extension Master Gardener. Trainees must also complete at least 30 hours of volunteer service, Trinklein said. Local Master Gardener coordinators can help online trainees fi nd volunteer opportunities to meet the service hour requirements. The deadline to register for the fall session is Aug. 13. A casino at the Lake Charis Patires Vacation News | USA TODAY NETWORK

A nosey man who loves to tell stories, an 83-year old vagabond. That’s how author Ray Speckman describes himself. A long-time Lake resident, Speckman has written his 14th book, a historically-based novel “Conspiracy at Lake of the Ozarks.” The book is about the establishment of the Lake’s fi rst gambling casino and the nefarious activity surrounding granting the license. “I have been intrigued with the possibility of a casino at the lake and the underlying current of demand for a lake casino,” he said. Speckman’s professional career runs the gamut — adjunct professor at Ozarks Technical Community College and Drury, columnist, radio personality and tourism director. Some may remember him most as the owner of Camp Bagnell Fish and Steak House. These days, he spends his time writing books. “In a way it is cathartic. It is release emotions, freely without care,” he said. “Novels are great, picking fi ctional characters from people, good and bad, liked, unliked and hated, and turning them into characters. I also enjoy making up events to happen in the future; things that are believable that could happen.” The book is about the establishment of the Lake’s fi rst gambling casino and the nefarious activity surrounding granting the license. FEATURE Describe for us the premise of the book? Two young men from the lake area, one from Brumley, the other from Bagnell, grew up together, attended Mizzou and returned to the lake to become successful in a very short period of time. Tim Moulder of Brumley became a state senator and lake-area lawyer. Eddie Bradley was a successful Real Estate broker who became head of the lake area tourism promotion organization. They both championed a constitutional amendment to allow a casino at the lake, and at the same time Eddie was elected Governor and Tim, Attorney General. The story weaves in the shenanigans of some of the lake pioneers who, after Bagnell Dam was built, determined the fate of people in business, creating millionaires and causing heartbreaks. They gathered around a round table in the restaurant of The Arrowhead Lodge. The good ole boy network began with the purchase of the Bank of Brumley with a promise not to move it. Almost immediately it became the Bank of the Lake of the Ozarks (BOLO). I name names and point subtle fi ngers. The selection of the site for the new casino is contested between Laurie, Camdenton, and Osage Beach/ Lake Ozark. Missouri government offi cials and elected offi cers are caught up in the bitter nefarious activities of interests that compete bitterly for the lucrative license.

Do you have any other books published?

About the author

I have written over a dozen eBooks and two printed books. One printed book is “An Ozark Painting,” a very concise, thoroughly researched history of the Lake of the Ozarks. Another is “Stranger in the Mirror,” the story of my wife, Marti’s, strong struggle against the yearlong invasion of a cancerous army. It was written to hopefully encourage women to get timely mammograms.

What are your future plans? I am already at work on a sequel to the Ozarkians where the main characters in “Conspiracy,” Tim, Eddie, Candy and the villain, Jimmie Bellagio meet again as their lives intersect. Also, Amazon/Kindle has developed a new platform for publishing books in a serial style (episodes they call them) where episodes are written one stage at a time and readers can read, paying for each episode with coupons they purchase with tokens. It is called Amazon Vella. I have written four episodes that have been published in a book called “Meandering,” an autobiography of Ray. DRINK & DINE

Beer is one of the oldest drinks humans have produced. The fi rst chemically confi rmed barley beer dates back to the 5th millennium BC in Iran, and was recorded in the written history of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and spread throughout the world. Beer is a common staple among an estimated 244 million people in the United States, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Judging from a typical weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks, most of those brewski enthusiasts hang out here to toss back a few. So, we aren’t surprised that several Lake-based bars, pubs and brewhauses make their own or carry some of the most fl avorful brews known to our tastebuds. In support of that love for beer, we off er some insight into a handful of those brew houses. As always, drink responsibly. Designate a sober driver. Find alternate modes of transportation with any of the many cab companies here, with Uber or Lyft. Make good decisions. Of course, these bars also off er some type of food or snack. Some to compliment the beer, others to help fi ll your belly. Some have kids’ menus.

He is a wise man who invented beer. Plato, the originator of that quip, was indeed a wise man. He parsed those words some four centuries before Christ was born. Yet, he must have been a wise, wise man to have such love for beer.

Electric Nectar Honey Blonde Ale The Honey Blonde Ale is crafted with a Midwestern malt to be crisp and smooth. This is the most refreshing beer with a mellow maltiness and light hop bitterness. $4

ON TAP Gold Nugget Jct. Golden Ale This golden ale is named after the 1970s Osage Beach amusement park, Gold Nugget Junction. This old-time amusement park featured an authentic 1890s country music show, can-can dancers, famous western gun fi ghts and much, much more! The Gold Nugget Jct. has a light, yet crisp flavor to quench your thirst. Damsel (in distress) Blonde AKA Double D Blonde. She’s sweet and light and surprisingly not very bitter! This ale is brewed right in the original town named Damsel. Although the origin of the name is uncertain, Damsel established a post office in 1885 and remained in operation until 1920.

Little Niangua Pale Ale Not really into bitter beer, but curious about IPAs? Try the Little Niangua, not as “hoppy” as its older brother, Big Niangua IPA. This pale ale is brewed with Cascade hops and offers a nice, smooth flavor -- just like the float trips you can take on the river. Big Niangua IPA Every little bro needs a stronger older bro to look up to. The Big Niangua is just that at 6 percent, the perfect big brother. FYI, The Big Niangua River runs about 13 miles from Tunnel Dam to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Dragon Lake IPA Are you a hophead and in search of bitterness? With double the hops and a large grain bill, this double has the bitterness that will explode your tastebuds but with a smooth silky touch. Lake of the Ozarks gets its nickname Dragon Lake from its serpentine shape. With 1,150 miles of shoreline it has more shoreline than the California coast. And the list goes on – so, put LOZ Brewery Co. on your Lake of the Ozarks Bucket List.

Owners Dave and Tiff hany Huff man started the brewery because at the time there were not any open at the Lake. Dave wanted to reuse their Bourbon barrels to create a Stout beer. This beer is unique as they dump the bourbon from the barrels in the distillery, roll them into the brewery and immediately fi ll them with an Imperial Stout beer he’s brewed. It ages for six months before it winds up in a keg. Stop in for a fl ight or pint and a pizza. The current selection of beer includes with prices ranging from $2 for 4-ounce drafts to $18 for 64-ounce growlers. Patio Pilsner Pilsner or Pale Lager. With a nod to the European pilsners, this selection offers a slightly sweet, pleasant flavor profi le with little bitterness. Think Stella Artois but with an Ozark twist. 2. RHONDA VINCENT AND THE RAGE, AUG. 19 What to expect: A modern bluegrass legend — and Missouri native — Vincent has won Female Vocalist of the Year numerous times from the International Bluegrass Music Association and plays multiple instruments. Her music “honors the traditions of classic bluegrass while also fi nding room for the more contemporary melodic and lyrical outlook of country,” AllMusic notes. Supporting act: Leroy Van Dyke Tickets: $20 to $25

Like their custom cuisine, state fair musical lineups often resemble a mishmash of favorites, summer rarities and overstuff ed options that leave a strange feeling in the pit of your stomach. Concerts at the Missouri State Fair, held annually in Sedalia, often fi t right in the middle of their cross-country counterparts. Some states greatly outpace Missouri — check out this year’s lineup in Minnesota, featuring the likes of Miranda Lambert and Tim McGraw or New York’s schedule with Nas, Third Eye Blind and Melissa Etheridge — while others falter by comparison. The fair’s typical programming leans toward the country end of the dial, mixing in some classic rock and contemporary Christian fare for a little variety. In some ways, this year’s lineup is quite typical — but mixes in just enough surprise to qualify as refreshing. Here’s our ranking of this year’s shows, which arrive with the fair in less than a month, Aug. 12-22. 1. BOYZ II MEN, AUG. 14 What to expect: At this point, Boyz II Men has been a trio about as long as it was a quartet, with bass singer Michael McCary leaving the group in 2003. But Nathan Morris, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman have no trouble serving up some of the sweetest harmonies in R&B history. The group’s great ballads practically spell out summer love, with all its highs and lows: “End of the Road,” “I’ll Make Love to You,” “On Bended Knee,” “Water Runs Dry.” Boyz II Men’s most recent album, 2017’s “Under

3. COLTER WALL, AUG. 20 What to expect: Typically, this Canadian country singer exercises “a charred, whiskey-soaked baritone” as he transmits “colorful tales of the western frontier and the folk heroes who populate it,” Pitchfork’s Amanda Wicks noted last year. But, as that piece relayed, Wall has also danced with the sounds of Western swing. His versatility — and quality — makes him an act worth embracing. Supporting act: Charley Crockett, Tim Montana Tickets: $20 to $30 4. RUSSELL DICKERSON, CASSADEE POPE, AUG. 13 What to expect: Dickerson, a West Tennessee native, and Floridian Pope make a strong double bill. He makes pleasing, if not always memorable, singles in a modern pop-country vein (think “Yours” and “Blue Tacoma”). She transitioned from rock star, leading the band Hey Monday, to a strong country presence in the 2010s, charting with tunes such as “Wasting All These Tears” and “Think of You,” a duet with Chris Young. Tickets: $15 to $30 5. TYLER FARR, TENILLE TOWNES, AUG. 17 What to expect: Missouri State University grad Farr emerged about a decade ago, releasing rock-tinged country under his own name and writing for the likes

of Joe Nichols. Townes, a Canadian singer-songwriter, owns a strong, traditional country timbre and a knack for more modern sounds. Tickets: $20 to $30 6. TRACE ADKINS, AUG. 12 What to expect: If songs like “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” and “(This Ain’t) No Thinkin’ Thing” are your idea of great country music, you no doubt dig the baritone singer. Adkins has three platinum and two gold records to his name, peaking with 2005’s double-platinum “Songs About Me.” With: Dusty Slay Tickets: $25 to $35 7. THE BEACH BOYS, AUG. 18 What to expect: If we were dealing with the full complement of living Beach Boys members, this show would climb the rankings. But the Mike Love-led touring arm feels slight, like a facsimile of the real thing. Longtime keyboardist/ songwriter Bruce Johnston is along for the ride, as is intriguing sideman John Cowsill. But even if you close your eyes, it’s hard to hear the true glories of one America’s greatest bands. Tickets: $30 to $40 8. HANK WILLIAMS JR., AUG. 21 What to expect: Bocephus always brings the honky-tonk bravado, but Williams’ catalog — which, in all fairness, dates back close to 60 years — never quite matches up to his outsize personality. And it’s become harder and harder in recent years to abide the ways that personality manifests in political ugliness. If you’re not a die-hard Hank Jr. fan, this just isn’t for you. With: Walker Montgomery Tickets: $30 to $55

Ranking neighboring state fair lineups How are fair concerts shaping up in states that touch Missouri? Iowa leads the way — by a long distance. Here’s what our neighbors have to offer. 1. IOWA, AUG. 12-22 IN DES MOINES Best options: Chris Stapleton with Nikki Lane, Hanson (supporting the Beach Boys), Doobie Brothers, Blake Shelton Worst: Five Finger Death Punch, Sam Hunt 2. KENTUCKY, AUG. 19-29 IN LOUISVILLE Best: P.O.D., White Reaper Worst: Colt Ford, Jackyl 3. ILLINOIS, AUG. 12-22 IN SPRINGFIELD Best: I Love the ‘90s Tour (Vanilla Ice, Naughty By Nature, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Coolio, Tone Loc, more), Sammy Hagar and the Circle Worst: Toby Keith, Kane Brown 4. OKLAHOMA, SEPT. 16-26 IN OKLAHOMA CITY Best: Ginuwine, Sawyer Brown Worst: Skid Row 5. KANSAS, SEPT. 10-19 IN HUTCHISON Best: Newsboys, Nelly Worst: Tracy Lawrence Note: Concerts for the Nebraska State Fair, held Aug. 27 through Sept. 6, and the Arkansas State Fair, held Oct. 15-24, were not available at press time. The Tennessee State Fair, Aug. 12-21, is being held in conjunction with the Wilson County Fair and is featuring a smaller, more regional lineup. m

Events on the Strip Shootout Meet & Greet, Dyno Shootout to be held in August

Shootout on the Strip will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. LAKE MEDIA FILE PHOTO Dan Field Special to Vacation News | USA TODAY NETWORK

Two major events on The Strip in Lake Ozark have been approved by the board of aldermen. The back-to-back events dovetail with the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout later next month, but organizers wanted to get a jump start so Lake Ozark residents, area residents and visitors have plenty of time to mark their calendars. The popular Shootout Meet and Greet will be held Wednesday, Aug. 25. A new event to The Strip and to the Shootout is a Car, Truck and Bike Show and Dyno Challenge Aug. 26.

Meet and Greet The Meet and Greet has become an annual event for Lake Ozark and The Shootout. The Meet and Greet will be held from noon to 10 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 25. This gives racers and other boat-related groups an opportunity to display to the public their boats, transport rigs and accessories. As part of the Meet and Greet, boats and rigs will line up on Rt. 242 about

mid-afternoon for a parade of boats to The Strip. Bagnell Dam Blvd. will be closed to thru-traffi c from School Road to Bagnell Dam from noon to 10 p.m. so boats and their transports can set up for the rest of the day. Resident passes will be provided by Shootout volunteers prior to the day so residents can access their homes and businesses. Parking will be available below Bagnell Dam Blvd. with shuttles providing transportation to The Strip. In addition, parking will be available at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Lake Ozark Christian Church and School of the Osage Heritage School. Shootout activities begin in full Aug. 20 and conclude with the actual Shootout Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28-29, near Captain Ron’s in Sunrise Beach (34.5 mile marker). For Shootout details, click on https:// lakeoftheozarksshootout.com.

Car Show, Etc. The new event will take place from noon to 10 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, also on The Strip.

48 | AUGUST 6 - 19, 2021 | VACATION NEWS

There will be a car, truck and bike show with competitive classes and plaques for class winners. In addition, there will be a Dyno Shootout for cars, trucks and bikes with classes and plaques for class winners. Registration is limited for the dyno runs. A dynamometer, also known as a “dyno”, is a device that measures force, torque or power. For chassis or engine applications, a dynamometer is designed to create a load to duplicate various speed (RPM) and torque (Nm or lbft) requirements. From this data, power (HP or kW) can be calculated. The show starts at noon and the awards ceremony is at 8 p.m. There will not be any street closures for this event (the center lane will be blocked off ) with vehicles set up for public viewing along both sides of Bagnell Dam Blvd. and the center lane. Again, parking will be available below Bagnell Dam Blvd. with shuttles providing transportation to The Strip. In addition, parking will be available at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Lake Ozark Christian Church and School of the Osage Heritage School.
