F

rom the secluded, wooded canopy of the front nine to the breathtaking lake vistas along the back, Lake Nona’s 18-hole championship golf course embodies the purity of the world’s greatest game. Designed by premier golf architect Tom Fazio, the challenging course is favored by countless professional golfers and world-class athletes who call Lake Nona home.

“When you stand on the first tee of Lake Nona, you literally see it, you get it. By the time you get done with the front nine, you say, ‘Wow, this is a very special place,’ ” explains Fazio.

Designed in 1986, Lake Nona is ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, meandering through natural pine forests, oak groves and along three lakes. The five sets of tees offer a challenge to all levels of players, stretching from 5,389 yards for ladies to 7,200 yards from the championship tees.

Beyond the main play, junior golfers have the Sunley Course, a short set of tees perfectly suited for those learning the game.

A beloved play since its establishment, Lake Nona’s collars, tees, approaches and irrigation systems recently underwent

renovations under the supervision of Fazio. While the work maintained the integrity of the course’s original design, the greens were redefined with high-tech GPS scanning to contour borders and meet USGA specifications. In addition, new Tiff Eagle grass was laid for better conditioning, speed and durability. Fazio also rebuilt three practice tees and two practice greens, improved the design of three short-game areas, and enlarged the course’s approaches to offer the opportunity for a wider variety of shots.

ver the past few months, Tavistock Development Company has been hard at work constructing what is slated to become one of Central Florida’s top shopping and entertainment destinations. very Orlando resident has seen it: a purple crest, emblazoned with a gold lion, proudly stuck on the bumper of the car in front of you. Since its official debut in 2010 and designation as a Major League Soccer (MLS) team in 2013, Orlando City Soccer Club has taken our town by storm.

With a growing roster of more than 450,000 loyal fans, star players such as Midfielder Ricardo Kaká, and a brand new stadium in the works, Orlando City President and Founder Phil Rawlins shares a glimpse at the team’s future and its positive impact on the community so far.

: [Lake Nona Life]: Orlando City is the new MLS team on the block. What’s your philosophy and how has that set the team apart from other national teams?

A

Q

: [Phil Rawlins]: From day one, we set out to accomplish what many believed to be an impossible goal – build a successful and thriving MLS franchise in Orlando. To us, that would only come through a focus on doing the right things for our fans and our partners. We built this club for and with the community. When we secured the franchise, MLS sent members of their Head Office Services department to visit us, to find out what makes us unique. They quickly determined that we’re all about defying expectations, and that’s an ambition we stand behind to this day.

: Clearly that driving force has led the team to much success so far, including being named the 21st MLS franchise back in 2013. What would you say has been the most unforgettable moment during your inaugural MLS season?

A Q

: Our inaugural match at the Orlando Citrus Bowl was certainly one for the books. More than 65,000 screaming fans came out to support us. Our decision to move forward with the development of our very own downtown stadium through private funding is also very exciting. We think it proves our commitment to the community and our incredible fan base, and will undoubtedly help our team to continue to excel.

: Even as an emerging team, Orlando City is said to have the second highest attendance record in MLS history. What do you think draws them in?

A

: To date, we’ve drawn 428,000 fans to the Orlando Citrus Bowl in 13 MLS matches; that’s more than 450,000 if you include our two friendly matches and U.S. Open Cup game. Our fans are the heart and soul of who we are – they love the game, they draw an electric atmosphere at every match, and keep the pride alive after the fact. WalletHub.com recently ranked Orlando City supporters as the most engaged and friendliest soccer fans out of 172 major metropolitan areas in the United States. We have the loudest, most loyal and passionate fans a club can want. Even visiting clubs who come to take on the Lions rank our match-day experience and environment as among the top three in the league, up there with long-established clubs like Seattle and Portland. It’s a combination of our location,

sportsmanship and optimism that attracts the crowds.

: The Orlando City crest is certainly worn with pride around town. How was it created and what does it symbolize?

A Q

: The crest was actually created by one of our fans, a local graphic designer. We went through several revisions until landing on the one we all know and love today. The lion is a symbol of strength encircled by 21 sun flares as its mane, a nod to our ranking as the 21st MLS club and our home in sunny Florida. The crown above the lion’s head represents our success in the United Soccer Leagues (USL) – we’re king of the game!

: Tell us about your new minor league USL team and what’s on the agenda to ensure the Lions build stamina and a presence?

A

Q

: Our launch of a new minor league USL team is a prime example of our commitment to success and building for the future. The USL team will create the ideal environment for player development and rehab, allowing us to further extend the Orlando City brand throughout the region. We’ll also push forward with developing a quality roster. Remember, this is our inaugural season, and many of the teams we’re competing against have played in the MLS for more than 20 years. We’re catching up fast!

: Orlando City’s Midfielder Ricardo Kaká was recently named the 2015 AT&T MLS All-Star Fan XI MVP. What do you think makes him such a force on the field?

A Q

: Kaká is an incredible team captain. He’s very humble and eager to help younger players in their development.

Off the field, he’s a committed citizen who cares very much about his community and improving the lives of others. He’s the perfect ambassador for the Lions, Orlando and MLS. It’s players like him that will continue to make us great.

: So, what’s next? What do you and the Orlando City coaching staff hope to accomplish in the coming years?

Q

: We’re all looking forward to seeing the new Orlando City Soccer Club stadium; set to be built just two blocks from the Amway Center. When will it open and what can fans expect from this new home turf?

A

: Firstly, the new stadium will offer 25,500 seats to accommodate the incredible fan base that we have here in Orlando. That alone will make us home to the third largest purpose-built stadium in MLS. The stadium will also feature lots of amenities to make the gameday experience one of the best in the league. We’re incorporating technology to enhance concessions, providing premier seats, clubs and suites, and a roof designed to amplify our fans’ chanting and singing. It’s going to be an incredibly exciting place to watch pro soccer. Our goal is to open the stadium in late summer of 2016.

: What are the benefits to being a team rooted in Orlando? : Our two recognized supporters’ clubs, Iron Lion Firm and The Ruckus, go by the slogans: “This is Orlando” and “Forever Our City.” Our fans have always been loyal to our team, but even prouder about being at home in Orlando. As a result, The City Beautiful has become the envy of many other clubs in the league. Visiting teams often marvel at how closely and strongly the city has embraced the Lions, from turning the town purple throughout the season, to the number of magnets you see on cars on our highways. We’re here because of the unremitting support of our community members, the City’s leadership under Mayor Dyer, and the many businesses and partners who have helped us on our journey. The best is yet to come, and we’re so glad Orlando will forever be the starting point of our accomplishments.
