F
rom the secluded, wooded canopy of the front nine to the breathtaking lake vistas along the back, Lake Nona’s 18-hole championship golf course embodies the purity of the world’s greatest game. Designed by premier golf architect Tom Fazio, the challenging course is favored by countless professional golfers and world-class athletes who call Lake Nona home. “When you stand on the first tee of Lake Nona, you literally see it, you get it. By the time you get done with the front nine, you say, ‘Wow, this is a very special place,’ ” explains Fazio. Designed in 1986, Lake Nona is ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, meandering through natural pine forests, oak groves and along three lakes. The five sets of tees offer a challenge to all levels of players, stretching from 5,389 yards for ladies to 7,200 yards from the championship tees. Beyond the main play, junior golfers have the Sunley Course, a short set of tees perfectly suited for those learning the game. A beloved play since its establishment, Lake Nona’s collars, tees, approaches and irrigation systems recently underwent
renovations under the supervision of Fazio. While the work maintained the integrity of the course’s original design, the greens were redefined with high-tech GPS scanning to contour borders and meet USGA specifications. In addition, new Tiff Eagle grass was laid for better conditioning, speed and durability. Fazio also rebuilt three practice tees and two practice greens, improved the design of three short-game areas and enlarged the course’s approaches to offer the opportunity for a wider variety of shots. Lake Nona’s reputation for quality has been globally recognized via the Country Club’s hosting of several international golf tournaments, including the 1993 World Cup of Golf, inaugural Solheim Cup, USGA National Team Championships and PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tavistock Cup. “The desire and commitment to make this a special place, both in golf and as a community, has done wonderful things over the years,” Fazio adds. “Lake Nona is dedicated to excellence on and off the course.”

reat Britain’s Justin Rose made the first hole in one in Olympics golf history and won the first gold medal in the men’s tournament in 112 years. In a tense, daylong duel with former neighbor, fellow major champion and European Ryder Cup teammate Henrik Stenson of Sweden, Rose tapped in a two-footer on the 18th hole to earn the highest step on the podium by two shots. The two came to the par-5 closing hole tied, but Rose hit a nifty chip from 25 yards to tap-in range while Stenson three-putted for bogey. “It feels absolutely incredible,” said Rose, adding it was a surreal moment to stand on the medal podium. “The whole week, I’ve been so focused, really, to be honest with you. I’ve been so into it. I’ve been just so determined, I suppose, to represent Team GB as best as I could, and it was just the most magical week, it really was.” Stenson, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 5, was the hottest player on the planet heading into the Olympics. He won the BMW International Open the last week of June, then outdueled Phil Mickelson in winning the British Open in July.
He also finished in a tie for seventh in the PGA Championship, and brought home the silver from Rio. “Of course, when you’re in good position to try and win, you always kind of feel a little disappointed afterwards,” said Stenson. “But at the same time, we said that all along in the Olympics, you’ve got some pretty good consolation prizes … No one was giving anything away. It came down to the last hole, and I didn’t hit my best pitch and Justin hit a great shot.” Treating the tournament as if it were a major championship, Rose was focused from the first moment he stepped onto the practice range. “I had to fight for every single thing today,” said Rose, who will move back into the world’s top 10 on Monday. “I just said today that I had to out Stenson Stenson. I knew I wasn’t going to get much from him at all. Obviously the bogey at the last only came because he had to force the putt in. But he is unbelievable. He’s relentless and a great player, and I can’t wait to be on the same team as him in the Ryder Cup. He’s a great player and he’s a great friend.”

his spring at the 2016 International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) RECon Convention, Tavistock Development Company unveiled preliminary plans and a 10-by-8 foot model for the new Lake Nona Town Center. In partnership with Steiner + Associates, the massive undertaking of retail and community space will transform lifestyle and entertainment in Lake Nona and serve as a model for town centers of the future. Fully developed, the Lake Nona Town Center is envisioned as the new heart of Lake Nona. More than a commercial center, the Town Center is being planned and designed for the people who live and work in Lake Nona. Walkability, recreation and communal spaces will be key components across the space. Once completed, it with serve as a true community meeting ground, an experience-driven epicenter where Lake Nona residents can eat, shop and convene together.

This next phase of the Lake Nona Town Center will build upon the world-class residential, medical and educational aspects of the community with the addition of 3.8 million square feet of retail, entertainment, office, hotel and restaurant space, making it a center of commerce and recreation. That number grew from a previously estimated 1 million square feet of space as a response to feedback from residents and future projections. Early plans are already incorporating the overwhelming feedback received from across the community and the recently completed Lake Nona Resident Survey. Each included resounding calls for entertainment options, active communal outdoor spaces and more diversity in restaurant and shopping options. Community feedback has been and will continue to be key to bringing the Town Center to life. In both formal requests and public forums, trends on resident “wish lists” range from big box retailers to boutique local shops, gourmet grocers to varied dining options, and movie theaters to performance spaces. These and more will all go into discussions to create a true community center that meets the needs of everyone who lives and works in Lake Nona. Phase one of the Lake Nona Town Center is already underway. The office and retail space, new restaurants opening this fall, parking garage and public art installations and the two already thriving hotels are just the first of many new additions. The next wave of expansion will start with a preliminary plan that includes 1 million square feet of space possibly starting in 2017. onstruction of the state-of-the-art United States Tennis Association National Campus is nearing completion, meaning that Orlando tennis enthusiasts’ opportunity to play at the new Home of American Tennis is quickly approaching. The 64-acre, 100-court facility is expected to fully open in January 2017. The campus will be home to the USTA’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions and will act as host to national, individual, league, collegiate and USTA Pro Circuit events – including possible Davis Cup and Fed Cup matches. And most notably for local residents, it will be available for use to the Orlando community year-round. The experience of the public was taken into great consideration back in early 2015, when the campus was originally designed and construction began.
“A lot of thought went into the overall layout of the campus, and intertwining common spaces with the actual court experience was a priority,” USTA National Campus General Manager Tim Cass said. “I think people will be excited that four ponds and a view of Lake Nona are worked into the campus, as well as the amount of green spaces. In addition, the openness in the pedestrian walkways and gathering spaces will really separate the tennis experience at the National Campus from other tennis facilities around the country and world.” The National Campus will be accessible to the public in early January when the facility officially opens. As soon as the professionals begin utilizing everything the campus has to offer, so too can the residents of Orlando.
