F
rom the secluded, wooded canopy of the front nine to the breathtaking lake vistas along the back, Lake Nona’s 18-hole championship golf course embodies the purity of the world’s greatest game. Designed by premier golf architect Tom Fazio, the challenging course is favored by countless professional golfers and world-class athletes who call Lake Nona home. “When you stand on the first tee of Lake Nona, you literally see it, you get it. By the time you get done with the front nine, you say, ‘Wow, this is a very special place,’ ” explains Fazio. Designed in 1986, Lake Nona is ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, meandering through natural pine forests, oak groves and along three lakes. The five sets of tees offer a challenge to all levels of players, stretching from 5,389 yards for ladies to 7,200 yards from the championship tees. Beyond the main play, junior golfers have the Sunley Course, a short set of tees perfectly suited for those learning the game. A beloved play since its establishment, Lake Nona’s collars, tees, approaches and irrigation systems recently underwent
renovations under the supervision of Fazio. While the work maintained the integrity of the course’s original design, the greens were redefined with high-tech GPS scanning to contour borders and meet USGA specifications. In addition, new Tiff Eagle grass was laid for better conditioning, speed and durability. Fazio also rebuilt three practice tees and two practice greens, improved the design of three short-game areas and enlarged the course’s approaches to offer the opportunity for a wider variety of shots. Lake Nona’s reputation for quality has been globally recognized via the Country Club’s hosting of several international golf tournaments, including the 1993 World Cup of Golf, inaugural Solheim Cup, USGA National Team Championships and PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tavistock Cup. “The desire and commitment to make this a special place, both in golf and as a community, has done wonderful things over the years,” Fazio adds. “Lake Nona is dedicated to excellence on and off the course.”

Innovations found in Lake Nona homes were well represented this year at the 2017 National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) International Builders’ Show, which took place in January in Orlando. The annual conference, which is the largest construction show in the world, featured two Lake Nona Golf & Country Club homes as the event’s signature “New American Home” and the first ever “New American Remodeled Home.” In addition to the featured homes, Tavistock Development and the Lake Nona community again received several industry awards from the NAHB as a top developer and master-planned community.

The show, which highlights the latest products and technologies in home construction, brought 60,000 visitors to Orlando and made Lake Nona a must-see stop this year. With plans by Phil Kean of Phil Kean Design Group, both featured show homes were designed to include cutting-edge efficiency, technology and sustainability but with sharable concepts intended to shape housing built anywhere and at any price. Developed on a “pod” style to maximize usability, The New American Home features an innovative phantom screen window, a see-through fireplace and a dual-staircase roof terrace to take full advantage of the natural light and vibrant sunsets Lake Nona provides. “You want to showcase something that nobody else has done, so now you’re challenging yourself to do something even bigger, different,” Kean said. “The New American is always where you want to showcase the latest, the greatest, whatever is new both to manufacturers and to builders, green features and whatever is new.” Additional features of The New American Home include environmental stonework, specialty light fixtures created with Progress Lighting and a courtyard designed to include a putting green to match the golf community feel of Lake Nona Golf & Country Club. The International Builders’ Show also features the NAHB’s national awards ceremonies, which celebrate excellence and innovation in home building and community development. This year Lake Nona was again recognized as one of the nation’s most outstanding communities, taking home Silver for Best Community Brochure and Best Master-Planned Community at “The Nationals.” As a community, Laureate Park was awarded Gold in the “Best in American Living” award. The first big announcement of 2017 came early when a new major partner and Big Four accounting firm, KPMG, chose Lake Nona as the future home of its state-of-the-art training and innovation facility. The firm set its sights on Lake Nona after a lengthy nationwide search to find the community best prepared to meet emerging trends and demands of an increasingly connected world. KPMG is a leading professional services provider, bringing business solutions and advisory services to top companies around the world. Its new Innovation Center will provide an immersive learning experience that will allow KPMG professionals to learn, connect and enrich the services they provide. With technology for virtual meetings and detailed visualization tools, KPMG believes this new interactive facility will provide a unique and forward-looking training experience. What separated promising landing spots, KPMG said, was Lake Nona’s commitment to innovation and human potential, factors they found lacking in other markets. Florida’s
year-round weather and recreation, they noted, did not hurt either. The 55-acre site will be located southwest of Lake Nona Boulevard and Narcoossee Road. Once completed, the facility will include an 800,000-square-foot training and conference center, with 800 planned guest rooms for employees, fitness and outdoor recreation areas, a restaurant and museum space. KPMG executives will participate in extended training in Lake Nona, bringing an estimated 50,000 professionals each year and 80 new jobs to Orlando. Attracting a blue-chip company is a victory for Lake Nona and the region, and it further underscores Lake Nona’s reputation as an innovation thought leader and economic driver. This addition further solidifies Lake Nona as an epicenter for business innovation, human potential and excellence, and KPMG will be a welcome addition to that culture. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2017 and is expected to be completed by 2019.

IMPACT FORUM INSPIRING HEALTH INNOVATION
Each year Lake Nona looks forward at the Lake Nona Impact Forum by bringing innovators together to share their expertise and explore new possibilities in health, well-being and human performance. Marking the fifth year in Lake Nona, the think-tank event attracted more than 300 global leaders, inventors and experts to discuss the latest issues in health care reform and policy, wellness technologies and the power of collaboration. This year it was led by a celebrated cast including CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, meditation pioneer Dr. Deepak Chopra, hall of fame athletes and five U.S. Surgeons General. The Impact Forum has become a meeting ground for healthy living and
innovation, celebrating the promises offered when a diverse group works together for a common aim. That sense of convening was clear from the opening keynote, “The Medici Effect,” in which the origins of the Renaissance Florence dynasty overlapped with the vision of Lake Nona: use diversity to drive innovation. The themes of Frans Johansson’s acclaimed Medici study—create new connections, opportunities and innovations by bringing together a diverse group of experts—was a literal inspiration for the early vision of Lake Nona Medical City and would serve as a reference point for the remainder of the three-day forum.

A Look Forward The future of health technology is a recurring theme of the Impact Forum, but this year futurists like Google’s Ray Kurzweil challenged attendees to imagine not where technology will take us next, but how extensively and how soon. Called the “rightful heir to Thomas Edison,” Kurzweil discussed technology’s predictable and exponential path, quickly becoming both smaller and more powerful, that promises rapid advances in the coming years and decades. You only have to look at the smart phone in your own pocket to imagine the near-future implications of wearables-turned- “implantables.” Then there are advances in genomics, the mass production of inexpensive 3D printed consumer goods to the development of blood cellsized devices that will augment our own immune systems and organ functions. Imagination may be linear, Kurzweil said, but technology is exponential.
Health and Well-being Partnerships Coming Soon for Residents Each year many of the big ideas and technologies discussed at the Impact Forum find a home in Lake Nona’s “living lab,” and this year two new fitness and well-being programs will be making their mark locally thanks to newly announced partnerships. Chopra’s “Jiyo” and Nerio Alessandri’s Technogym will launch wellness applications and a connected fitness platform across Lake Nona in 2017.
Lake Nona will be the second North American “Smart City” to utilize Chopra’s well-being focused app Jiyo, which centers on the five pillars of well-being: personal growth, exercise, nutrition, sleep and relationships. Combined with analytics tools and a range of tips, articles and videos from leading experts like Chopra, the customized Lake Nona app seeks to help individuals be their best selves through a total mind-body integration platform. Alessandri, the man behind the Romagna Wellness Valley healthy community initiative in Italy, will provide equipment and connected tracking apps across Lake Nona to make our community the first designated “Technogym Connected Wellness Ecosystem” in the United States. Together, Jiyo and Technogym will push Lake Nona forward as a heathy, connected community with health and wellbeing tracking, social connectivity and community-wide programming. Each program will be formally unveiled to the community throughout 2017 with special events and opportunities for Lake Nona residents.
Healthy in Body and Mind Across Our Communities Within the Impact Forum’s forward-looking discussions were others advocating to look locally in the hopes of creating wellrounded communities for individuals of all ages and challenges. A healthy community is about more than general health and wellness, they argued, but also includes safety, sustainability

and a consideration of both body and mind. Threats to the future of youth sports was the concern of a truly hall of fame panel of athletes. All-time great Annika Sorenstam, Super Bowl champion Charles Woodson, Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson and acclaimed orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews discussed the risks posed by inherently physical and increasingly year-round sports, including injuries and potential burnout. While competition has many benefits and supportive motivation can be helpful, Sorenstam reminded parents that “fun is the most important thing a kid should have when they play a sport.” Personal stories also sparked discussion of needed policy shifts and engagement in mental health. Activist and former Canadian First Lady Margaret Trudeau shared her personal experiences with struggle and loss that brought to light the

very real effects and long-running stigmas surrounding mental health issues through a shining story of resilience and hope. It was a reminder that health, wellness and well-being—and a healthy community itself—are not merely physical goals but mental and emotional ones as well. Thanks to the visionaries and advocates attending this year we can better imagine today what will come tomorrow for Lake Nona and healthy communities around the world.
