GOLF A CHAMPION’S COURSE
F
rom the secluded, wooded canopy of the front nine to the breathtaking lake vistas along the back, Lake Nona’s 18-hole championship golf course embodies the purity of the world’s greatest game. Designed by premier golf architect Tom Fazio, the challenging course is favored by countless professional golfers and world-class athletes who call Lake Nona home. “When you stand on the first tee of Lake Nona, you literally see it, you get it. By the time you get done with the front nine, you say, ‘Wow, this is a very special place,’” explains Fazio. Designed in 1986, Lake Nona is ranked as one of the top 100 golf courses in the world, meandering through natural pine forests, oak groves, and along three lakes. The five sets of tees offer a challenge to all levels of players, stretching from 5,389 yards for ladies to 7,200 yards from the championship tees. Beyond the main play, junior golfers have the Sunley Course, a short set of tees perfectly suited for those learning the game. A beloved play since its establishment, Lake Nona’s collars, tees, approaches and irrigation systems recently underwent
renovations under the supervision of Fazio. While the work maintained the integrity of the course’s original design, the greens were redefined with high-tech GPS scanning to contour borders and meet USGA specifications. In addition, new Tiff Eagle grass was laid for better conditioning, speed and durability. Fazio also rebuilt three practice tees and two practice greens, improved the design of three short-game areas, and enlarged the course’s approaches to offer the opportunity for a wider variety of shots. Lake Nona’s reputation for quality has been globally recognized via the Country Club’s hosting of several international golf tournaments including the 1993 World Cup Golf, Inaugural Solheim Cup, USGA National Team Championships, and PGA TOUR-sanctioned Tavistock Cup. “The desire and commitment to make this a special place, both in golf and as a community, has done wonderful things over the years,” Fazio added. “Lake Nona is dedicated to excellence on and off the course.”

Q
: [Lake Nona Life] It’s evident Lake Nona is a hub for burgeoning ventures - first with health care and the development of Medical City, and now with the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) plans to build the New Home of American Tennis here. Can you talk about the strategy behind building multiple development clusters at Lake Nona, and what collaborative opportunities you envision as a result?
A
Q
: [Jim Zboril] One thing is for certain: To compete in today’s world, you have to create an environment that is flexible, allows for change and will be able to seize opportunities that don’t even exist yet. You must have the best infrastructure and a team that is visionary and persistent. A key to our overall success so far at Lake Nona is diversity, from our neighborhoods and residents to our businesses and partners. Lake Nona Medical City has been a wonderful example of the power of a cluster, and with the arrival of the USTA, the industry’s largest organization with 800,000 members, it’s clear to us that there’s a lot more possible as we envision the future. We’ve all worked hard as a team to create a very special place. People want to be part of what we’re building because we can help create natural affinities onsite with partners who can enhance and take their business or industries to the next level. That’s exactly what we plan to do. At our core, we’re focused on innovative collaboration, and from health care to sports and beyond, the opportunities for growth are endless.
: The Tavistock Development Company team has always stood firmly on its vision of a long-term strategy with a mantra that this is a marathon, not a sprint. What are some of the unique elements, resources and features you’re working on now that will position the Lake Nona community to be a true leader?
A
: The current expansion of our commercial and retail offerings is very important to our long-term strategy, and one that we’ve obsessed over in the last several years. The first phase of our Town Center is a great example, marking the opening of the area’s first Class-A office space, two onsite hotels, and several new local and national restaurants for everyone to enjoy. Plus, the USTA’s arrival will likely welcome even more opportunities.
Q
: Speaking of long-term plans, FORTUNE Magazine recently featured Lake Nona in a seven-page spread touting the community’s unique attributes, applauding its investment strategy and highlighting its collaborative spirit. Is this the kind of endorsement and reception you encounter with prospective residents and businesses who will help to flesh out these strategies for growth?
A Q
: Absolutely. When people read about Lake Nona or, better yet, tour it with our team, you can feel their enthusiasm. It’s contagious. Lake Nona is one-of-akind; there are so many things here that you just can’t find anywhere else.
: Despite the great successes you’ve witnessed during Lake Nona’s development, what are some of the current challenges or obstacles the community faces as it continues to expand?
A
Q
: It’s an exciting time for Lake Nona. We have lots of onsite activity and are dealing with significant growth, starting with the physical construction of $200 million in projects, excluding Laureate Park, which is the best-selling residential community in the region. This is, however, not without growing pains. There’s always a lot to manage, but better to have high quality growth and investment than the alternative, so I’ll accept this challenge any day.
: Everyone is abuzz with excitement when talking about continued progress in Lake Nona. What are you most excited about?
A
: It’s hard to choose. There’s so much happening in the next year, from the development of the first phase of the Town Center and Florida Blue Innovation Center to the groundbreaking of the VA’s national SimLearn Center and the USTA’s first-of-its-kind facility. And then there’s plenty more exciting prospects percolating. However, I’m most excited about our team and our partners – we’ve got a great group of people who all share the enthusiasm and the dream. That’s not easy to find and it certainly helps me jump out of bed every morning.

Named by WIRED as “one of the world’s best tech conferences,” Stream began as a series of digital sessions attended by the brightest leaders in creative, technology and media. Aligning with the event’s free-form structure, Stream Health 2014 organizers immediately turned to Lake Nona as their No. 1 venue choice.

TENNIS USTA COMES TO LAKE NONA
E
arlier this year, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) officially announced plans to build the New Home of American Tennis at Lake Nona. Breaking ground in 2015, this state-of-the-art facility will house the Community Tennis and Player Development divisions and the University of Central Florida (UCF) varsity tennis program. Spanning 63 acres, it will be the largest year-round outdoor tennis facility for the organization with more than 100 courts and the following featured areas: •
Tournament & League – 24 clay and 16 hard courts, two player pavilions, an admin office, trainer rooms, stringer area, player lounge and check-in area.
•
Collegiate Tennis – The new home to UCF’s Varsity Tennis Program with 12 hard courts and one future tournament show court seating more than 1,200 people.
•
Team USA – Eight hard and eight clay courts for the 17 USTA Sections for player development.
•
High Performance & Player Development – Intended for Team USA events with eight hard, eight red clay and six covered courts within the USTA Player Development division, plus 32 dormitories, strength and conditioning areas, and a sand workout area.
•
36/60’ Tennis – Eight 36’ and eight 60’ courts for youth and adult game practice.
•
USTA Office Building – With tennis pro shop, fitness area, locker rooms, player lounge, cafeteria and two floors of office space.
An epicenter for tennis innovation, the new facility will focus on the complete tennis pathway – from youth, recreational, and collegiate players to future professionals and pro-tour athletes. Because of its durability, every type of tennis event – from 10-and-under team tennis to national championships for those ages 90 and over – will be hosted right here. “This will truly be a game-changer for our sport,” said USTA Chairman of the Board and President Dave Haggerty. “The world-class facility will allow us to impact our sport at every level, from the grassroots to the professional ranks.” Creating approximately 154 new jobs once opened in the fourth quarter of 2016, the New Home of American Tennis will kick start the discussion for further expansion of a sports cluster in the region.

CITRUS BOWL THE NEXT ERA OF CENTRAL FLORIDA SPORTS
T
here’s no doubt about it. Orlando is becoming a hub for new ventures, whether in the arts and entertainment industry, residential development sector like our very own Lake Nona region, or sporting teams on the rise. Our home offers great promise for future growth. More than 70 years ago, 21 members of Elks Lodge 1079 each foresaw this opportunity before much had unfolded. What started with the community’s first college bowl game in 1947 soon became today’s reality: two nationally televised bowl games featuring teams from four of college football’s power conferences. The brains behind Florida Citrus Sports (FCSports) have long invested in Orlando’s budding teams, functioning as a nonprofit organization that funnels tickets and financial backing to support these growing entities. With the reconstruction of the Orlando Citrus Bowl underway, FCSports CEO Steve Hogan shares his vision for the next era of community impact with the new stadium intact.

Q
: [Lake Nona Life] A long-standing icon in downtown Orlando, the original Citrus Bowl has been a familiar site to locals for decades. What makes the new iteration of this structure bigger and better than before?
A
Q
: [Steve Hogan] Everything. Our old building served us well, but was really pieced together over several decades with many expansion efforts. Some of the original 1936 structure was still standing, but sorely in need of repair. In reconstruction, the entire building was demolished with the exception of the modern upper decks. In its place, we have a dramatically different venue with individual chair-back seats, premium clubs, new restrooms and concession stands, wider concourses, state-of-the-art video boards, and more. In every way, the new building is equivalent to what you’d find in an NFL city.
: It’s clear you’re making great progress on the new structure, but can Orlando residents expect to see the same beloved events that have historically been hosted on this site?
A
: We will continue to host our signature events at the Citrus Bowl, including the Russell Athletic Bowl and our New Year’s Day bowl game. Of course, the first major event in the stadium will be the annual Florida Blue Florida Classic featuring FAMU and BCU on November 22, 2014. Additionally, we’ll see the return of the state high school football championships in December, as well as the ever-popular Monster Jam in January. Plus, Orlando City Soccer will play its inaugural MLS season at the Citrus Bowl in 2015.
Q
: For locals who want in on the action, what kind of premium seating options will the new stadium offer?
A
Q
: We have a variety of club seats, loge boxes, and private suites. Our clubs are unique in that we have two types along the sideline providing some of the best seats in the house. For our bowl games, our Indoor Club features an all-inclusive food and beverage experience in a climate-controlled space complete with televisions, restrooms and a full cash bar surrounded by large glass walls with a clean view of the stadium. The adjacent Open-Air Clubs provide upscale pay-as-you-go food and beverage in an open environment so you never lose sight or sound of the game. The loge boxes along the new plaza level create a semi-private viewing area with room to move around.
: Clearly there’s a lot to look forward to. Where can our members and guests find information about the upcoming bowl games and events?
A
: The best way to secure tickets to both bowl games (and a host of other events each year) is by purchasing a Florida Citrus Sports membership at FloridaCitrusSports.com or by calling (407) 423-2476. For those looking to lend a helping hand in our development efforts, we’re also accepting volunteer applications. Whatever the inquiry, please don’t hesitate to ask. We’re incredibly excited to include the community in our efforts to grow and improve.
Q A
: What about new and improved events – are there any additions to the stadium’s agenda? : We’re equally excited about the potential for new events. Think high profile, neutral-site college football games, international soccer “friendly” matches, and even NFL games. Our volunteers and leaders – a “who’s who” list of Central Florida notables – are leading the way in creating sound business models to host these types of events on a regular basis. Not only that, the new Citrus Bowl will now function as a platform to host spectacle events, for instance, Wrestlemania or a College Football National Championship Game. The opportunities really are endless.

F
or residents and visitors alike, Orlando has always represented a place for development, growth and, of course, a little bit of magic. It’s no surprise the city’s basketball team remains on-trend with its notable wins, star players and, more importantly, its contributions to the community at large. From the boardroom to the basketball court, Orlando Magic CEO Alex Martins shares the team’s visionary measures for revitalizing downtown Orlando, all while broadening its footprint in the community.

Q
: [Lake Nona Life] Orlando locals are buzzing about the current and future developments happening downtown. In addition to the Amway Center, what new initiatives can people expect to see from the Magic?
A
Q
: [Alex Martins] Many people have heard about our plans to develop a comprehensive sports and entertainment district featuring dining, retail, hotel and entertainment options. The project represents a $200 million investment from the Magic and its partners. As with the Amway Center, this is the product of several years of planning and searching for the right avenue to revitalize another part of downtown Orlando. We’ve studied how other cities have built similar venues, leading positive economic impact through job creation and serving as a catalyst for other mixed-use development. This district is going to be a long-term project, likely five to six years in the making, but we can’t wait to get started.
: Back on the courts, there’s been a lot of talk about the Magic’s youth movement. Any updates to share on this venture as a growing team?
A
: We’re excited as ever in regard to the direction we’re heading on the court. The culture we’re building embodies hard work, humility and the hunger to improve each and every day. We have a group of young guys who believe in the dynamic of a team, are proud to wear the Magic uniform, and believe in something greater than themselves alone. With the strategic direction and leadership of our General Manager Rob Hennigan and Head Coach Jacque Vaughn, we believe we will reach our goals of contending in a long-term, sustainable fashion.
Q A
: What can we expect from the Magic this year? Any new tricks up your sleeve?
Q
: Stretching beyond home turf and with more than 50 million tourists visiting Orlando each year, where does the Magic’s global reach extend?
A
Q
: The power of sport is really amazing. In all, the NBA can be seen in 215 countries and territories in more than 41 languages. There are 650 million followers from a social media standpoint and tremendous consumption of our product on all digital platforms. The Magic has specifically played games in England, Japan, China and Mexico City. We look forward to continuing our international travels in the near future, while also hosting international teams at the Amway Center.
: The Orlando Magic is well known amongst Lake Nona residents (and beyond) for its wide-reaching community efforts. Where does this commitment to locals stem?
A
: It really starts at the very top with the DeVos family, owners of the Orlando Magic. As noted in our mission statement, we strive to be champions on and off the court, delivering legendary moments every step of the way. We’re proud of the impact we’ve made on Central Florida so far, but there’s still plenty of work to do.
Q A
: What’s it like being a part of this vibrant team? : It’s amazing. I started my sports career serving Italian Ice at New York Giants football games and here we are today. I’m blessed to have had the opportunities I’ve had, from being a student assistant in the Villanova sports information department and working for the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Hornets, to my experience here in Central Florida at Tavistock Group and, most recently, as a trustee on the board of the University of Central Florida. It has been pure magic.
: Based on our personnel, I think we’ll play a little differently than in the past. We’ve adopted a defensefirst mentality. We’ll be tougher and more physical, but still have the ability with our young, athletic guard and wing players to push the pace. As always, we’ll certainly play with great effort. Our young and diverse roster of players is interesting, especially because several team members can play multiple positions. There’s a lot of opportunity for us here.
