Every person and business in the country contributes to it near daily. It’s big business. There is no escape. We’re talking the generation, collection, and disposal of garbage... waste... trash. It is inevitable, unavoidable. We live, consume, and produce garbage. It is an outcropping of living.

As of 2018, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calculated that 4.9 pounds per person per day of municipal solid waste is generated-that’s a lot of accumulating trash on the nonstop conveyor belt of life. It is what happens as life progresses forward.

In this whirlwind, enter Giovanna Antonacci, owner of Crown Waste & Recycling Systems LLC located in Huntersville. She knows and understands.

“We are a full-service waste management company serving the Charlotte-Lake Norman area,” Giovanna Antonacci said. “This means we provide roll-off dumpster service, residential waste and recycling removal, commercial waste and recycling removal... really, any waste needs you have, we are here to help!”

A roll-off is an open-top dumpster characterized by a rectangular footprint, using wheels to roll it off a truck and in place.

How did Antonacci get involved in what has traditionally been a male dominated industry?

“I got involved because Crown Waste is a family business. My grandparents started it in 1958 in New York City. My father then took it over. My brothers and I are third generation. We now operate in New York City and North Carolina,” Antonacci stated. “A few years ago my brothers and I saw a niche market need in the Charlotte area for waste removal and we decided to expand our company to be a multi-state operation. It honestly, was one of the best decisions yet!”

This woman-owned private sanitation company is less than 3-years old as far as North Carolina knows, of course it is much older

when including its New York roots. With seven employees, the company boasts of having state-of-the-art latest equipment, which includes four trucks-three roll-off trucks and a front-load truck. They have approximately 50 residential collection pails or largecapacity bins at homes for weekly garbage and recycling service. They have 65 standard 15-yard roll-off dumpster and 75 of the 30-yard roll-off dumpsters. There are approximately 65 front-load dumpsters of various size (2-, 4-, 6- and 8-yard capacity) in the Crown Waste equipment fleet.

One has to ask... is there any glamor in Crown Waste & Recycling Systems’ world of waste management?

“Yes, of course... to me, the glamorous part is that our work is dynamic--always changing. There is never a day when I do the same things,” Antonacci said. “Of course, we survive on routines to provide consistent quality, but yet there is always something new. I love interacting with different people and meeting new clients. By being located in in both New York and North Carolina I am lucky to interact with various types of people. It always keeps me engaged in my job and always willing and wanting to learn more and do more.

“From my point of view, it’s interesting to see the different needs for different customers and different markets, and the need to adapt to those needs. In every market, there’s different personalities and being in this industry you are in a service industry, so we have to adapt to the customer needs!”

For Giovanna Antonacci, she truly enjoys the unique role of being a woman-owner in a male-dominated industry.

“I find it incredibly gratifying that I can learn so much and be so intrigued in an industry where my company, Crown Waste & Recycling Systems, has a respected history and today provides valuable services to the community where I live and work. Can’t ask for anything better!”
