lush LANDSCAPES Get Ready for Spring

Winter weather can leave your grass, shrubs and trees weak and hungry. If you want your lawn to come back fuller and lusher than ever, follow these simple tips.

Rest Your Lawn: As much as you can, stay off your lawn, especially when it’s frosty. Walking on your lawn when it’s frosty or overly wet can damage the grass when it’s unable to regrow and repair itself.

Clear Up Any Leaves And Debris: As often as you can, clear up any leaves and other debris. Leaves trap moisture on the surface which can lead to fungal infections. They can also cause a spike in worm activity as they move onto the surface of your lawn to feed on them, leaving their worm casts behind. Remove them with a rake or garden vacuum.

Trim your trees: It’s hard to tell if a tree has dead branches unless you look closely and get it checked out. If dead branches are left untended, they can fall, causing property damage and potential injury. Consider hiring a tree trimmer to do a “safety prune” once every three years.

Apply fertilizer, pre-emergent and

weed killer: In the spring, use a combination of fertilizer, and pre-emergent on your lawn. Then, six to eight weeks later, apply both products again, along with a broadleaf weed killer. Be prepared to mow often: One mistakes homeowners make is only getting their lawn mowed once a week in the spring. Mowing more frequently can help a fuller healthier lawn grow.

Pick a good mulch: Once your lawn is cared for, edge out your beds, trim back dead branches on shrubs and replace the mulch.

Get your irrigation system inspect-

ed: Once the weather has warmed up for the year, turn on your irrigation system and inspect it to see if it is in working condition.
