A LOVE OF ART, a passion for family, and the devotion to helping people feel their best, you get Rachel DuQuette, owner of Peak Brows and Beauty Permanent Make-Up/Cosmetic Tattoo in Huntersville. A native of Concord, this high school cheerleader has always enjoyed being around women who “lifted each other up and supported one another, especially coming from a family of four girls!” Along with cheer, she gravitated toward the arts: “I became aware of my artistic ability in high school when I won a few different awards for art pieces we created in class,” Rachel shares.

ART self-discovery OF That creative streak led her to Rowan Cabarrus College where she temporarily shelved her interest in fine arts and pursued journalism—which led to an internship at Cabarrus Magazine. “At the time,” she explains, “writing for a magazine was my dream job and I was overthe-moon!” But she quickly realized the hours were less than family friendly. With two small children (Adelynn, 6, and Kobe, 5), the schedule was a bit chaotic. “I could feel myself starting to doubt that career path,” she recalls, “but at 25 years old and with two kids, I felt it was safer to stay with what I knew.” That didn’t last long. When the pandemic hit, she says, “That’s really when my new career began brewing. I was just trying to find my passion and purpose while navigating through motherhood. I was a full-time stay-athome mom to my babies for about six months and during that time I tried everything under the sun. I started a surveying job that was work-fromhome; I purchased pallets of various items for resale; I bought resin and gems to make resin art … my creative/artistic side has always tried to shine through in whatever I do. My wheels were turning … my creative juices were flowing.”

Juggling family life and researching potential careers, Rachel became curious about microblading – a kind of permanent makeup usually performed on the eyebrows. “I started looking into having it done for myself,” she says, “and then I discovered some beforeand-after pictures of eyebrows and lips and saw how it changed so many women’s lives. I became completely obsessed about the process … it’s like the universe was saying ‘This is it!’ I could feel an odd pull toward this industry, like it was on my mind for a very specific reason.”

After working up the courage to register for a course in microblading, Rachel headed to Atlanta for her first class. When it wrapped up, she was hooked! “I fell absolutely in love with everything about it,” she smiles, “every little aspect of it!” Rachel would continue to further her training and education through a course at PhiAcademy in California and two other trainings in Miami.

The journey from journalist to permanent makeup artist has been a wild ride for Rachel, who credits her family, especially her husband Dezmond, and her clients with the inspiration and support in getting her here.

“Seeing the women’s faces after they take the first look in the mirror is hands down the most rewarding part about this business. Women hug and squeeze me, they cry happy tears, and they message me for days after their appointment thanking me for bringing their confidence back and changing their life. It’s unreal.” w
