Timing is everything. Making award-winning wine takes time. Roger Furrow, owner of Hickory Hill Vineyards in Moneta, is grateful for the gift of time. Five years ago, Roger went into cardiac arrest after a routine stress test at Centra Medical Group Stroobants Cardiovascular Center in Moneta. Chad Hoyt, MD, and Laura Bollard, RN, sprang into action, performing CPR to save his life. Within minutes, Centra ONE landed and they were flown to Centra Lynchburg General Hospital where cardiologists discovered three blockages and Roger underwent a triple bypass heart surgery. The winemaker treasures every day on the family vineyard. Each grape harvested builds upon a craft requiring patience and time. Roger credits his cardiologist, surgeon and nurses for Roger Furrow Owner, Hickory Hill Vineyards
giving him more of the latter.

f you think because it’s August, summer is over, think again! There are still plenty of fun and exciting activities happening around the lake. Check out our calendar for all the events — live music, outdoor movies and even a Paddle Sports Poker Run at Crazy Horse Marina. So here’s a question for you: What do a Sea Ox, a dock, a Bedford County potter and the Virginia Creeper Trail have in common? They’re all features in the final installment of our Jewel of the Blue Ridge series. We hope you’ve enjoyed reading the series as much as we did preparing it. Also, be sure to check out our profile of Phil Clemmons who’s gained quite a reputation and following for his gravity-defying, acrobatic Jet Ski manuevers. Plus, writer Ferne Hale takes a sneak peek inside another home open to visitors during the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour later this year, and gardening columnist Catriona Tudor Erler takes us on a tour of whimsical gardens that will surely put a smile on your face! Enjoy these last remaining days of warm weather as soon we’ll be indoors before too long! Cheers!

beautiful garden, full of thriving, living things, imparts a sense of joy. A successful garden is a fun place to be, reflecting its owner’s personality, including idiosyncrasies. To add to the joy, most gardens benefit from a touch — or a large dollop — of whimsy. Whimsy is defined as “capricious humor” and “fanciful or playful expression.” In the garden, whimsy can be expressed in many ways. Even in a formal garden there is room for a subtle, sophisticated joke — or broad humor. The Ladew Topiary Gardens in Monkton, Maryland consist of 22 formal garden rooms. Upon arrival, the attraction visitors see is a topiary foxhunt created out of yew. The fox, with his tail a literal bush, sprints out in front, followed by a galloping pack of yew hounds. Two men on horseback bring up the rear with one horse leaping over a gate in the yew hedge. This is a display of humor on a grand scale. On a smaller scale, a topiary cat with whiskers created from fiber optic grass (Isolepis cernua ‘Live Wire’) encourages smiles. Place a topiary rabbit or rabbit sculpture in a vegetable garden. It will be much more welcome to see than the real thing. A sundial in a bed of thyme makes a satisfying, low-key pun. The fact that you have to recognize the culinary herb to get the joke adds to the frisson of pleasure. Similarly, garden sculptures of fern fiddleheads are amusing to find in a bed of ferns. Online, you’ll find a variety of designs for these coiled sculptures, including the idea of making your own from rebar. Birdhouses can be a delightful source of whimsy. A collection of brightly painted avian abodes clustered together makes a fun statement, as do houses fashioned to look like mansions, gas stations,
condominiums or other structures. Painted an azure shade, the Blue Bird Hotel advertises that its rooms are, “Cheep! Cheep!” Or consider the birdhouse fashioned as a cat, with two drilled round eyes as entrances to the abode. A bright yellow canary tail feather droops out of the carved feline’s mouth. The safely nesting bird is oblivious to the joke. A variation of that theme is the cat with a seed tray around his neck and a sign offering free birdseed. The unexpected adds wit and whimsy to a garden. Take a classical sculpture and place a garden tool in the figure’s hand. The blend of sublime and ridiculous engenders smiles. Alternatively, put Mardi Gras beads around the neck or a wreath on its head. Unexpected scale also amuses. At the wonderful Chanticleer Garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania, you’ll see two giant acorn sculptures lying in a bed filled with oak seedlings. Oversized flower sculptures, whether made of iron, ceramic, metal or other material, are fun to encounter, as are giant ants, snails or other

ABOVE. The topiary foxhunt scene at Ladew Topiary Gardens is the first of many whimsical topiary that visitors encounter when at the 22-acre garden in Monkton, Maryland. The art of topiary was virtually unknown in the United States before Harvey Ladew began creating them in the 1930s. He loved to tell friends about the time a woman said to him, “I saw your lovely garden in Maryland. Those wonderful hedges and all that beautiful Tipperary.”
creatures normally considered garden pests. Garden sculptures with a whimsical twist are a delight in the garden, as are repurposed objects. Bicycle baskets, toolboxes, jugs, teapots, galvanized containers, buckets, ceramic bowls, old pots, castoff boots and shoes and enamel tubs are among a myriad of possible receptacles. Old tools have a pleasing patina. Embed them into concrete on a wall, transform them into a gate, incorporate them into a garden fence, create a whimsical piece of sculpture or even turn a trowel into a doorknocker. Dollhouses, or anything miniature, hold a deep appeal and fascination for most of us. By the same token, furniture scaled for children is a charming addition to a garden. If children or grandchildren visit, find a secluded spot under a large, spreading
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT. Whimsy in the garden can take many forms, such as a birdbath planter with a duck diving into a frothy bed of sedum (note the foliage color is echoed in the duck’s feet); an oversized terra cotta teapot pouring mud tea into a cup; and a topiary cat, made locally at Walter’s Greenhouse in Hardy, with fiber optic grass (Isolepis cemua) standing in as whiskers. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP. The joyful confidence projected by these elegant dancing hares brings pleasure to anyone who is lucky enough to encounter them. A VW bug toy car is a delightfully unexpected planter. The bright yellow car contrasts beautifully with the deep blue lobelia growing out of the sunroof. Birdhouses offer rich opportunity for whimsy in the garden, and the catthat-ate-thecanary house is a joke that never ceases to amuse.

tree or behind a clump of shrubs and provide a childsized table and chair. Depending on your budget and the nature of your garden, this retreat can be as elaborate as handmade chairs, benches and tables, or as simple as a large tree stump for a table and smaller logs for chairs. Miniature or fairy gardens enchant children and grown-ups alike. Making one can be a fun project to do together with your children or grandchildren. Together you can make fairy furniture out of twigs and twine and other garden materials or purchase the supplies and focus on creating a magical miniature landscape together.

Tasteful or tacky?
Taste is a personal thing. To one gardener a wellmade garden gnome, artistically placed, is a charming addition to the landscape; to another, a gnome of any kind in the garden is a tasteless faux pas. The same may go for pink flamingos. Keep an open mind. A flock of flamingos in the shrub border may become a source of amusement. What was considered tacky becomes witty and campy. Be bold. Much of the joy of whimsical moments in the garden is the surprise factor. As Tovah Martin wrote in her 1999 book “Garden Whimsy,” “When we were young, inexperienced

ppalachian Power is gradually stabilizing several SML islands to prevent them from disappearing beneath the water’s surface, becoming navigation hazards and lost forever to recreational use. There are approximately 25 islands at the lake — the exact number depends on how small a piece of land one considers to be a legitimate island. Of those, Appalachian owns 15; the rest belong to individual property owners or lakefront communities. Many of the lake’s remaining islands are at risk of being washed away by a combination of natural and wake-induced erosion, leaving shoals that become
invisible sources of busted boat props, damaged shafts and lower units, and potential inconvenience and injuries to boaters who run aground. Recognizing SML’s islands as both charming features and recreational opportunities, Appalachian, as part of its shoreline management plan and operating license responsibility, has begun working to protect the islands it owns, starting with the ones that are most threatened. The effort began in 2014 when construction of the Oak Grove public boat access facility near channel marker R27A yielded barge loads of rock suitable for shoreline stabilization. And it’s a prime example of rip-rapping around “downfall,” fallen trees left undisturbed to provide a habitat for fish. “Little Bit had about 150 feet of shoreline to stabilize,” said David Byrd of Clifton F. Byrd & Sons. “We brought two-and-a-half loads of displaced rock around from Oak Grove and used a barge-mounted excavator to place it around and on the island.” To date, five Appalachian-owned islands have been stabilized, according to Mark McGlothlin, senior plant support specialist for Appalachian. In addition to Little Bit, other islands included in the project are Bar Island (near Smith Mountain Dam), Brides Island (the third in a series near channel marker R4), Bird Island (near Vista Pointe) and Cup Island (near Sailors’ Cove). “The shorelines of Bar, Brides and Little Bit islands are now protected with rock from the Oak Grove project,” McGlothlin said. “The others were improved with quarried stone provided by the contractor as well as a variety of bio-engineering techniques.” For Cup Island, rocks were used to create a barrier reef that encircles the island, leaving a shallowwater moat between the rock and the island to

serve as a fish nursery. Island tree fall was left in place to create protective cover for juvenile fish, and several openings allow fish to swim in and out. The rocks were intentionally loosely placed to provide additional cover where small fish can hide from predators. “Wear polarized sunglasses to better see the fish that take refuge here,” McGlothlin advised. Another variation from standard shoreline rock stabilization was used in 2016 at Bird Island, the largest of the stabilized protrusions. Rip rap now protects the northern shore from wave erosion, but the side toward Smith Mountain uses bioengineering techniques.

“The stakes you see along the shoreline anchor coconut coir logs,” McGlothlin said. These logs are biodegradable and used for erosion control on shorelines, hills and other areas that are prone to erosion. “Behind them we’ve planted native vegetation — alders, red osier and button bushes — which, once they take hold, will take over from the deteriorating logs,” McGlothlin added. With this approach, boaters can still continue to access the island, said John Shepelwich, Appalachian’s corporate communications manager. “We encourage use of our islands for camping and picnicking, but we ask everyone to obey the posted ‘Pack In, Pack Out’ signs. Bring your own firewood — no cutting is allowed — and leave everything as clean as you found it.” As funding becomes available, future islands will be protected, Shepelwich added. Appalachian also issued an initial permit to Franklin County to stabilize some of the shoreline
There are approximately 25 islands at the lake — the exact number depends on how small a piece of land one considers to be a legitimate island.
around Smith Mountain Lake Community Park, which is eroding. The county is considering an additional application to Appalachian and the U.S. Corps of Engineers, because the effort will exceed 500 linear feet, the threshold for making application to the U.S. Corps of Engineers. Exactly when the actual work gets funded and performed is up to Franklin County administrators. Owners of private islands also are encouraged to preserve them using approved stabilization techniques, with rip rap being the last resort, Shepelwich said. Based on an island’s size, location, slope of the bottom and type of stabilization used, costs can vary, Byrd said. Byrd added that he and Appalachian officials are available to consult with island owners who might be considering shoreline stabilization.

ost lakers are aware that safe, responsible operation of a personal watercraft places high emphasis on moderate use of the machine’s capabilities. Reckless wake jumping, high-speed sprints in rough water or heavy traffic and sudden unpredictable turns all have the potential to put riders in peril. But when you’re a professional whose livelihood centers on coaxing the last possible smidgen of performance out of the man-machine combination, you get to bend the rules on occasion ... to the delight of an appreciative audience. That’s the case with Phil Clemmons, who is often referred to by those who have seen him perform as the Jet Ski trick rider guy. Phil has been showing kids how to repair and enhance performance of small engines for nearly 12 years, currently as a part-time teacher of small engine technology at Bridging Communities Technical Center in Richmond. But his main livelihood comes from a business he runs with wife Penny: P&P Performance, which specializes in custom building, tuning and set-up of racing all-terrain vehicles, motorcycles and, most avidly, personal watercraft. Clemmons started messing with stand-up Jet Skis in 1991, evolving into competitive free-style riding. Over the years he’s campaigned some 15 machines, most of them assembled from components he’s handpicked from the best stuff available. “A competitive free-styling machine starts with a carbon fiber aftermarket hull that weighs only 40 pounds or so,” Clemmons said. “I build the guts by hand, typically using a naturally-aspirated 700-cubic-

centimeter, two-stroke Yamaha engine, bored and stroked up to 1,400 cc. Other common engines are 900s, 1,000s and 1,200s. Custom carburetors, ignition and exhaust systems are added, plus a cable-actuated trim system that helps create the steep wakes needed for launching flips.” Flips? Yes, flips. Those who watch him ride shake their heads in amazement as rider and machine charge through three or more consecutive vertical 360s, accelerating off ramp waves that have been selfcreated. Other stunts include plunging underwater dives, airborne horizontal end-for-end spins, and what airplane pilots would call an aileron roll—all of which are definitely on the do-not-try-this-at-home list. These days, Clemmons attends about 10 events per year, traveling to places such as Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Arizona, Illinois and Pennsylvania to support the free-style riders who are often customers for his performance-enhancing handiwork. But riding at Smith Mountain Lake occupies a special

place in his heart. “When I was 6, my family started vacationing at Crazy Horse Campground,” Clemmons said. “There I discovered Penny, who was coming with her family from Staten Island [New York]. The first Jet Ski I rode was her dad’s ... he always had the newest water toys. In high school, I started working on how to outrun him. I did it.” The couple started dating officially in 1992 and married 10 years later. Phil describes Penny as “very supportive” of their enterprise. “She rides well and works at the shop in many capacities — assembling hulls, engines, wiring and helping install padding, decals and with other cosmetics,” Clemmons said. “This business truly is P&P. There is no way it could operate without her support, help and skills.” In late July, Clemmons once again rode a 15-minute lunchtime demo during the third annual Wake The World event at Crazy Horse Marina near Scruggs. Wake the World is a charity event that offers kids,

who don’t typically get to enjoy boating on SML, a day of tubing, waterskiing, wake boarding and swimming. Volunteers donate their time and boats for the event, and local businesses contribute food and on-shore entertainment. “They watch Phil ride in delighted disbelief,” said Pat Bechtler, the marina’s co-manager. Bechtler, husband Chris and Ken Hayes of Smith Mountain Wake Co. help organize and conduct the event. “When he does that first 10-foot-high flip, the looks on their faces are priceless.” Clemmons confessed that it’s not as easy as it looks. “People seldom realize how physically demanding

freestyle riding is,” he said. “The machine works hard, but so does the rider. Throwing trick after trick is heavy cardio. You need to be fit to make it happen.” P&P Performance also can help weekend riders upgrade their machines for longer range, improved handling or hotter performance. “An engine is basically an air pump,” Clemmons said. “We improve performance by tinkering with intakes, porting and exhaust systems so that more air is processed. With many of the newer, sit-down machines, we can unlock additional performance for a very reasonable cost.”

dock out
It was love at first sight when Jason and Kathryn Turner first saw the dock at The Water’s Edge property they purchased in 2006. Since that time, they’ve made it their weekend retreat. “There are several other families with young kids in the cove, and the swarm just moves from one dock to the next on weekends,” Jason said. “We’re deep in the cove, so any boats that do happen to come in, turn around well before reaching our dock. The kids swim from dock to dock unimpeded or use their kayaks and paddleboards.” The 2,400-square-foot space includes slips for a pontoon and a 24-foot runabout, large covered seating areas, a sun lounge area, two floaters, two personal watercraft drive-on ports, a storage building plus a nautical-themed entertaining porch with lots of windows.

With a large covered seating area, Jason and Kathryn Turner’s dock at their home in The Water’s Edge is ideal for entertaining family and friends. The dock is also a favorite hangout for the couple’s children: Karleigh, Carson, Blake and Brittany.

ason and Kathryn Turner didn’t buy their property in The Water’s Edge for the house. They bought it for the dock. “I spotted the new listing on a Sunday, called our realtor, and said, ‘Something seems amiss with this listing ... it’s got to be underpriced. Let’s go have a look tomorrow,’” Jason said. Jason recalled his wife was nearly in tears as they toured the house as she said, “‘It needs so much work!’” Jason pointed out that the work was merely cosmetic and told his wife, “‘Just look at the incredible dock!’” That was back in 2006, the year the Turners married. The 2,400-square-foot dock had been built before Appalachian Power’s shoreline management plan and by homeowners who planned to use dock space as living space. And now it’s the Turners who have enjoyed it to the fullest. “This is where we spend weekends,” Jason said. “I work a lot of long days during the week, but Friday afternoons I try to keep open. That’s when we begin our weekend dock time.” The dock layout features slips for a pontoon and a 24-foot family runabout, large covered seating areas, a sun lounge area, two floaters, two personal watercraft drive-on ports, a dedicated storage building plus a weather-tight 14-foot by 16-foot

entertaining porch — remodeled just last year — with comfortable furniture, a TV, a microwave, a full-size refrigerator, storage cabinets, a mini-refrigerator for kids’ beverages and snacks and even a fishing porch that faces a deep spot where Jason recently caught a 5-pound bass. Even the dedicated storage building is generous — one wall boasts floor-to-ceiling space for hanging life jackets topped by shelves for lounge cushions, inflated air rafts and other water toys. Fishing gear has its own custom rack as well. “We love to entertain down here,” said Kathryn, who keeps the porch well-stocked with snacks and beverages and uses a large basket to carry last minute items to the dock. “We try to anticipate dock gatherings and bring things down well in advance,” Jason added. “That minimizes special trips.” As one would expect, the dock is a favorite hangout for the couple’s children — Karleigh, 7, Carson, 10, Blake, 16, and Brittany, 21, when she’s home from college.

dock out
Remodeled last year, the dock includes an entertaining porch with comfortable furniture, a TV, a microwave, a full-size refrigerator, storage cabinets, a mini-refrigerator for kids’ beverages and snacks. There’s also a fishing porch that faces a deep spot where Jason Turner recently caught a 5-pound bass.
“There are several other families with young kids in the cove, and the swarm just moves from one dock to the next on weekends,” Jason said. “We’re deep in the cove so any boats that do happen to come in turn around well before reaching our dock. The kids swim from dock to dock unimpeded or use their kayaks and paddleboards.” Watching the kids paddle about has even inspired a commerce decision for Turner. He’s now stocked kayaks and paddleboards at Turner’s Building on Virginia 40 in Union Hall.
58
AUGUST 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
The family’s dock experience also guides recommendations Turner offers for those who are building or renovating docks. “With shoreline management’s dock size and enclosure size limitations, you can’t build a dock like this today,” he said. “So many are choosing a singleslip design that keeps the remaining activity space connected for entertaining and play on fixed deck and floater. Keeping PWCs on crank-up lifts, while less convenient than a mini-slip or drive-on float system, minimizes the square footage given over to PWC storage.” Another space-expanding tip that Turner offered was to head to higher ground. “Create an entertaining area — patio, fire pit or decking — that is above the 800-foot contour and use paths, steps or boardwalk for a seamless connection to the dock,” he said. “Precious dock enclosure storage is often lost by trying to incorporate a bar — which, in reality, seldom gets used as such,” Turner added. “A simple serving pass-through is better space utilization.” And even though the family has considered moving to another lakefront home, the dock always keeps them anchored. “Every now and then, the thought of a new house comes up,” Jason said. “Today, it’s practically impossible to replicate the waterfront paradise we so much enjoy. We’re staying right where we are.”

edford County artist Nancy Blankenship likes it when her pottery is used instead of being displayed on a shelf. “That’s what it’s for,” Blankenship said, adding that her customers shouldn’t be afraid to use it. “I want them know they don’t have to baby it.” There are cups, saucers, bowls and platters in colors that are inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains and lush landscape around Bedford County. “I do tend to be drawn to blues and greens,” Blankenship said. And unlike mass-produced pieces of pottery, everything that Blankenship makes is by hand. “I’m inspired to make things that aren’t like everybody else’s,” she added. “Humans and clay —

As the featured artist for July at Goose Creek Studio in Bedford, Blankenship created this experimental piece to illustrate the country’s deep political divide. TOP RIGHT. they’re the same ingredients in different forms. None are perfect, but each one is unique.” Blankenship’s love of making pottery took hold when she was managing an art gallery at a pottery studio in Forest. She started taking classes. “I got bitten by the pottery bug,” she said with a grin. Now 20 years later, her pottery can be found at stores around the region, including Goose Creek Studio in Bedford, where she was last month’s featured artist. The pieces that Blankenship recently created for the Goose Creek show were experimental, and while this artwork is a departure from what she might normally create, having the show has been beneficial. “It’s helped broaden me” as an artist, she said. MLS#806715, $400,000, Over 7 Private Ac Blankenship is a member of the Blue Ridge Potters Guild and also travels regularly to workshops, such as the annual North Carolina Potters Conference, to hone her skills. “They bring in famous potters from all over the world. It’s fun to see what other people in other countries can do with a block of clay,” she said. “It keeps me interested so that I don’t become too predictable.” Blankenship has set up her pottery studio$595,000, in MLS#807719, Dream Home Lo the basement of her Bedford County home. In one corner is her kiln. Various pieces of pottery rest on nearby worktables waiting to be completed. Another table features completed pieces that are ready to be shipped to area stores.

ArTiST profile Taking a large ball of gray clay in her hands, Blankenship throws it on her pottery wheel. With her foot on a pedal similar to a vehicle accelerator, Blankenship turns the wheel to demonstrate how she makes her mugs and bowls. “The object is to get it centered,” she said. Once she hand-shapes and adds decorative flourishes to her pieces, she puts them aside to dry before firing them in the kiln. It takes five to six hours at more than 1,900 degrees during the first firing to ensure the clay hardens enough before adding glaze. After she adds the glaze, the pottery is fired in the kiln again at a searing 2,300 degrees. That second firing can take anywhere from seven to eight hours, Blankenship said. “The slower it fires the better,” she said. For Blankenship, waiting is the hardest part. “I can hardly wait for the kiln to get cool enough for me to open it,” she said. After unloading the kiln, she inspects each piece, prices it and packs it to be sent to one of the stores that sell her products.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP. Using her index fingers, Blankenship forms a center in a piece of clay on her pottery wheel. One of her finished pieces is a yarn ball holder and feeder for knitters. Blankenship demonstrates how she makes her bowls and mugs on her pottery wheel. Whether it’s reading books or taking a class, Blankenship said she is constantly honing her skills and learning new techniques. Samples of Blankenship’s pit-fired pottery sit atop a shelf showcasing her completed works.

Blankenship makes cups, saucers, bowls and platters in colors that are inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains and lush landscape around Bedford County. “I do tend to be drawn to blues and greens,” she said. Blankenship also makes pit-fired pottery in her backyard using wood, sawdust and copper sulfate. These pieces have a lighter, pinkish hue to them with a soft, matte finish. To create a pit-fired piece, Blankenship shapes the clay as she normally would, then covers it with chemicals and wraps it in aluminum foil. “Then you just put it in the fire and see what happens,” she said. During her career, Blankenship has seen a shift in the demand for handmade pottery. “I think there’s a big interest in handmade right now or it seems to be,” she said. “I love being able to shape wet, malleable clay into an object that, when subjected to intense heat, becomes hard and durable to be enjoyed for many years.” Although she may not always hear directly from her customers, Blankenship feels a connection with those who invest in her pottery. She even keeps in touch with a few repeat customers, including one who periodically sends Blankenship photos of different foods that she’s prepared and served on her pottery. “Sometimes she’ll send me a photo of what she’s made,” Blankenship said. “I get satisfaction from that.” In addition to Goose Creek Studio, Blankenship’s pottery is available for sale at The Little Gallery at Bridgewater Plaza, Peaks of Otter Gift Shop in Bedford, Natural Bridge Gift Shop in Natural Bridge, Second Helpings in Roanoke and Forest Farmers Market in Forest.

ost people likely don’t know that a Sea Ox resides at Crazy Horse Marina at Smith Mountain Lake. One part labor of love and one part vacation getaway, the Sea Ox is actually the name given to a 50-foot-long houseboat owned by Roanoke residents Dan Roach and Linda Balentine. On a recent tour, Dan pointed to the mascot for which the boat is named — an oversized, mythical sea creature with an ox head. Constructed by Dan out of fiberglass and bender board, it’s mounted to keep watch over the bow. “That’s the first and last sea ox you’ll ever see,” he said. “Everybody kept saying ‘what the heck is a sea ox?’ So I had to create one.” The Sea Ox is also the married couple’s respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. “You really do leave the world behind when you come here,” Linda said. “It’s a real stress reliever being around water.” As founder and president of Crowning Touch Senior Moving Services, which includes a moving service that offers packing and unpacking, as well as a consignment shop, an auction house and a real estate division, Linda is constantly on the go.
TOP. The houseboat’s interior features an open living room and all the comforts of home.
“Because it’s so detailed … that’s why this boat is important to me,” Linda said of her busy work life. Before they purchased their boat four years ago, Dan and Linda had owned a camping trailer, but were never far from water, often camping along rivers or lakes. After three years, the couple sold their trailer. They had owned a houseboat prior to getting the camper, so they decided to look for another one. “We just missed the water,” Linda said. “We’re water people. We love to swim and float around.” Dan, who grew up sailing, has built sailboats from

the ground up. He found the Sea Ox for a good price, but in disrepair. “I got the space I wanted and I was able to buy it cheap,” he said. “There’s not a surface that I haven’t covered,” he said. “It was a fun project.” For six months — three of those working every day — Dan, a master cabinet and furniture maker, who previously owned a manufacturing business that made planters and mailboxes, labored over every square inch of the vessel. “It’s all weather-resistant; it’s not going to change shape,” he said of the western red cedar used to build the custom cabinetry and bead-board ceiling. “That’s why I used it, because it’s so good outside.” From the vibrant teal bimini top and matching carpet to the vessel’s mechanical elements and twin

457-cubic-inch Crusader engines, the Sea Ox was completely made over. “You can’t look at anything here that hasn’t been redone,” Dan said. Because he did most of the work himself, Dan estimates the couple saved thousands of dollars. But, he said, the work of owning a houseboat is never really done. “There’s no end to this,” he added, joking that the acronym for BOAT is “bring out another thousand” dollars for maintenance. Tucked away just forward of, and below, the bridge is a sleeping cabin featuring a king-sized bed and adjacent bathroom. It’s a cozy space that includes built-in shelving and lighting and provides plenty of privacy. Beyond the bridge is a well-appointed kitchen —

The living room sofa converts easily into a bed to accommodate guests and extended family, which includes daughter Savanna Davis and her husband, and Dan’s three sons from a previous marriage and their families. “It’s really comfortable,” Savanna said of the houseboat’s accommodations. guests can enjoy an open-air deck or climb a few stairs to a larger deck that includes a dining table for four and adjacent sitting area. Another step away is a flying bridge that allows Dan to pilot the Sea Ox from the upper level, as well. Fun, nautical-themed wooden carvings and knickknacks are found throughout the space. “It’s a great party boat to live on and be on,” Linda said. And while he is handy, Dan credits local mechanic Steve Mills for keeping the engines in tiptop shape. “He’s the vet for the Sea Ox,” Dan added with a laugh. Whether they’re motoring along on the lake or anchoring in a quiet cove, with a generator on board, Dan and Linda still have the creature comforts of home. “You can change your front yard anytime you want,” Linda said. If they choose to stay put, and sometimes they have to if it’s too windy, that’s just fine with them. “It’s comfortable even if you don’t take it out,” Dan said. Linda agreed, adding that the atmosphere around the marina is always festive. “Everybody around you is focused on having fun.” That sometimes makes going home to Roanoke — and back to reality — tricky. “We might as well live here,” Dan said. “We’re here all the time.”

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a trio of recent thefts from businesses near Westlake Corner. The first theft occurred sometime during the evening of March 24 when a patio set was stolen from True Organics on Scruggs Road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Maj. Mike Bowman said employees noticed the furniture
was missing when they arrived for work the following day. Outdoor wicker furniture was reported stolen March 27 from David James Homes’ model in LakeWatch Plantation near the Franklin County Family YMCA. The General Store on Scruggs Road also reported two outdoor chairs and a picnic table were stolen March 29. Rita Grisetti, co-owner of The General Store, said she never expected something like that would ever happen. “We have never had any problems.” Grisetti said that she once acci-
dentally left store items on display outside overnight, but when she returned the following morning, the items were still there. “Now we are paranoid,” Grisetti said, adding that she will no longer be as trusting. The two chairs taken from The General Store had been secured by a cable that was cut. Grisetti said the 10-foot picnic table would have needed a lot of strength to lift, as well as a large truck or trailer to haul it off. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported it has no leads at this time. Investigators are look-
ing at surveillance video from area businesses as well as checking with area pawn shops and websites to see if there has been any effort to resell the items, said Capt. Paul Caldwell. The sheriff’s office asks that business owners and residents consider moving their lawn furniture indoors or to a place where it can be monitored by security cameras or alarms to prevent future thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Caldwell at 352-5174 or paul. caldwell@franklincountyva.gov.

Josh Gilbert of Roanoke, winner of the 5K, crosses a stream along the trail.
Dozens of runners braved the steep slopes and trails around the Smith Mountain Dam for the Dam 50K and 5K on April 1. This is the second year for the event that added a new challenge for the 5K runners. This year both the 50K and the 5K participants faced a 1,300-foot climb during one section of the course. Known as the “death climb” by runners, it was added to make the 5K one of the most difficult around, according to race organizer Lauren Acker. “The death climb is a big part of the 50K race,” Acker said. “We decided to make it part of the 5K so it would be the hardest 5K ever.” While the area had experienced heavy rain over the past few days, runners experienced good weather for race day. The course was mostly dry by the start of the
race. “The weather was beautiful,” Acker said. The top finisher in the 5K was Josh Gilbert of Roanoke with a time of 31:48. He admitted that the 1,300-foot climb was difficult. “I don’t know if there is a harder 5K anywhere around here,” Gilbert said. Erica Martin of Moneta was the top female finisher in the 5K with a time of 1:02:35. Stephen Mohr of Arlington, Virginia was the top finisher in the 50K with a time of 4:25:32. He placed fourth in last year’s 50K at the dam. Lindsay DiMarco of Durham, North Carolina was the top female finisher in the 50K with a time of 5:52:55.

Norfolk & Western bought the line in 1919 and continued to operate it until the mid-1970s. “In 1973, N&W testified at hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission (ICC) that the costs of maintenance and repairs along the line had become prohibitive,” the website said. “In 1974, Norfolk & Western successfully petitioned the ICC to abandon the line effective April 1, 1977.” A decade later what had once been a dream to create a trail along the line, gained momentum. In June 1987, the Creeper Trail was dedicated as a National Recreation Trail by an act of Congress, the website said. Today, the trail draws thousands of visitors to the area each year. In 2015, the Creeper Trail was inducted into the Rails to Trails Hall of Fame by the Rail-to-Trail Conservancy, a nonprofit advocacy group that works to cre-
f you’re looking for a family-fun activity this summer, head to the mountains of Southwest Virginia and take a ride along the Virginia Creeper Trail. The 34-mile trail, which starts at Whitetop Mountain and traverses through the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area into Damascus and Abingdon, is a popular pastime even during the summer swelter. Damascus, which was once home to a booming timber industry, has been reborn and now caters to outdoor enthusiasts with the Creeper Trail and Appalachian Trail wending through town. The Creeper Trail used to be the VirginiaCarolina Railroad that began in the early 1900s carting passengers and timber from North Carolina to Abingdon, according to the Virginia Creeper Trail website.

day TripS ate connections with communities and multi-use trails and open spaces. “The Creeper Trail is our main tourist attraction,” said Brad Wann, store manager for Sundog Outfitter in Damascus. “It’s really made the whole town.” Sundog and its sister company, Adventure Damascus Bicycles, are just two of several businesses that shuttle bikers regularly to the top of Whitetop Mountain for the ride back down. “It’s a very gradual downhill ride,” Wann said. One weekday morning, more than a dozen riders from Virginia, Tennessee and Colorado gathered for the day’s first shuttle in the Sundog parking lot. With their bikes secured to a trailer, the 15-passenger van, known as the Laughing Dog Shuttle, ambled along a two-lane highway that featured countless switchbacks toward Whitetop Mountain. “I’m not going to drive fast, but that’s not going to straighten the road out,” said Jerry Hamilton, Sundog’s shuttle driver, who asked passengers to warn him if he needed to stop in case they felt motion sickness. During the 25-minute shuttle ride, which traverses through Washington County into Grayson County, Hamilton talked about the sights.

“You’ll see thousands of Christmas trees,” he said as the van drove past a hillside covered with the small green trees. “The Fraser firs grow about a foot a year and do well at 3,000 feet and above.” After the bikes were unloaded at the trailhead, riders were instructed to ride at their own pace back to town. The trail is well-maintained thanks to a partnership with members of the Virginia Creeper Trail Club, the U.S. Forest Service and the towns of Damascus and Abingdon. The trail mainly consists of crushed limestone and cinder and is a relatively smooth ride, although it can get bumpy in places where larger rocks are embedded into the ground. For most of the ride, especially the first several miles where the trail is at its steepest, it’s easy to just coast along and enjoy the scenery. At one of the highest points along the route, bikers can pull off and walk a short distance to take in the scenic mountain vistas. Numerous bridges crossing Whitetop Laurel Creek allow for not only good photo opportunities, but also a chance for riders to cool off by dipping their toes in the water. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT. Riders prepare to start their journey along the Creeper Trail after being dropped off at the top of Whitetop Mountain.
If You Go The trail is open to the public year-round, and if you choose to bring your own bike and not use a shuttle service, the outing is absolutely free. If you ride from Whitetop to Damascus, plan to be on the trail for 2-3 hours.

The lushness of the forest is an invigorating feast for the senses — there’s a sweet, rich woodsy smell, vibrant-colored greenery growing along the path, birds chirping and water rushing along from the adjacent creek. About halfway into the journey, riders can stop at the family-owned and operated Creeper Trail Cafe for a bite to eat and to relax. “They’ve got a chocolate cake there that was written up in the Southern Living magazine,” Hamilton told shuttle passengers. While summer weekdays are typically the slowest, the trail is at its busiest on weekends and holidays. “We do a couple hundred in a weekend,” Wann

As the trail begins to flatten out near the end of the 17-mile journey into Damascus, riders have to pedal to propel themselves the last few miles. Those who want to venture farther can travel an additional 17 miles to Abingdon, although the route is more populated and features a rolling terrain. After returning their rental bikes, riders can soak in Damascus’ small-town ambience by taking a stroll along the main thoroughfare, getting something to eat at one of several local restaurants and browsing for souvenirs in a variety of shops. A
uthor and Moneta resident Linda Kay Simmons was lounging by a neighborhood pool with her husband one afternoon last summer when Joseph and Mamie, two characters in her new book, “Lightning Shall Strike,” began speaking to her. “They just started yammering away,” she said. The story revolves around the Simpkins family. Thaddeus Simpkins is an elder in the fictitious Waters of God Believers Church, who presides over his household and the disciples of this cloistered religion with an iron fist. The idea for the book came from a story Simmons had heard about a female relative, who had lived in a strict religious household. “The bones of my story began with a long deceased relative, a strong-minded woman who wore her husband’s pants,” Simmons wrote in the author’s note. “She refused to take them off when demanded by her husband and church and paid the consequences.” In “Lightning Shall Strike,” women in the Water of God Believers Church have no influence over or role to play other than serving the men. “It’s all about the patriar-
chal culture,” Simmons said. Each chapter is told from one of the characters’ points-of-view. “Once I wrote the first few chapters, I allowed the characters to write their stories,” Simmons said. While religion is a major theme throughout the book, so too are isolation and mental illness. There are numerous references to Franklin County and surrounding areas woven throughout the book, which takes place over a span of 50 years. Even the cover is local — it’s an old black and white photograph that Simmons took 30 years ago of an abandoned farmhouse in Hardy. “The voice of my characters seemed to come right out of this photograph, complete with crows [sitting atop the chimney],” Simmons said. A lightning bolt was added by fellow Lake Writers’ member Tom Howell to add emphasis to the title. Although she grew up in Roanoke, Simmons said her lineage in Franklin County goes back 200 years, and she feels a special connection to her ancestral roots. “I can’t see myself ever living anywhere but here,” she said. For Simmons, who worked for 31 years

Lightning Shall Strike in the airline industry and now works part time at Runk & Pratt Smith Mountain Lake, writing is considered a form of therapy. “I always did it as a way to heal myself,” she said. In 2015, she wrote and published “Cahas Mountain,” a multi-generational novel set in Franklin County and Roanoke. She’s also written poetry and short stories for the Lake Writers’ three published anthologies. “Lightning Shall Strike” is available locally at Southern Roots, The General Store, Franklin County Public Library and at amazon.com. This month, Simmons will host readings and signings at several locations, including Aug. 9 (noon-5 p.m.) at Comfort & Joy, Aug. 15 (4-7 p.m.) at Farmhouse Catering, Aug. 18 (11 a.m.-2 p.m.) at Sugar and Slice Cupcakery and Confections, and Aug. 25 (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) at Southern Roots. Simmons also encourages readers to share their reviews of the book with others. “I want to share the importance of people doing book reviews on Amazon, particularly for local writers,” she said. As for what’s next, Simmons is working on an audio play, “Claudine: Evolution of a Redneck Goddess,” set in Franklin County in 1964. “This is a completely different thing,” she said. “It’s sort of a dark comedy.” — Karen Dillon, Editor AUGUST 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
reader rEvIEwS The Whole Town’s Talking By Fannie Flagg What happens after we die? This is a question pondered by each of us at some point, and perhaps the greatest mystery of life: What lies beyond our last breath? Fannie Flagg provides one possible answer in her latest novel, a lighthearted, folksy tale that chronicles the history of a small town in the Midwest. The story begins in 1889 when a Swedish dairy farmer by the name of Lorder Nordstrom decides to establish a community cemetery for himself and his fellow farmers in their newly formed “Swede Town.” Still Meadows became the final resting place for the founders (and, eventually, their descendants) of the town that evolved into Elmwood Springs, Missouri. Flagg takes the reader through a decade-bydecade history of Elmwood Springs and its people, and in doing so, the reader gets treated to an intimate account of some of the key events in our nation’s history. What makes the storytelling so special, however, is the everyday living. Life goes on in Elmwood Springs, always. Times of war, political unrest and social upheaval happen here and affect the residents, just as they do everyone else in the world. But the turmoil doesn’t stop the townspeople from doing their jobs, getting married, having babies and dying — life continues to be lived, as it should. As the residents of Elmwood Springs pass on, the reader learns that Still Meadows is anything but still, and the souls who reside there give the reader great perspective on the peace that comes with taking a step back and detaching from the anxieties that
plague us in life. As each decade passes, the reader becomes aware that the town, just like its residents, is living out its lifespan. Through Flagg’s wellcrafted storytelling, we see that there doesn’t have to be any tragedy attached to it; it’s just part of the ever-evolving nature of the world. Flagg delivers a charming, hopeful, story that spans over a century. Beginning with Lorder Nordstrom and his mail-order bride, Katrina, the tale grows and spreads, becoming the story of their children, grandchildren, neighbors — everyone. Every resident of the town plays a vital part, no matter how small, and each serves a purpose. Flagg ponders what that purpose is in the thoughts of one of the townspeople who has passed on: “He had always been casting about in his mind: What was life all about? What the hell was his purpose? What was he supposed to be doing? … The fact that he was born was all the purpose he had ever needed. He was meant to be his parents’ child, his wife’s husband, his daughter’s father, and on and on.” In this age of everyone seeking their purpose, of thinking they have to do something big, Flagg’s message is profoundly comforting. — Lori McAnnally, Roanoke
The edge of the Sky: all You Need to Know about the all-There-Is By Roberto Trotta If you have an interest in the Earth (Home-World) and the universe (All-There-Is), and you can’t quite grasp all the arcane terms used by astronomers, here is a small book (with a large import) that will help you make sense of it all. Roberto Trotta is a theoretical cosmologist in the astrophysical group of Imperial College London. In “The Edge of the Sky,” Trotta uses only the thousand most common words in the English language. The wonderful aspect of this book is that it can be read to (or by) your children, yet adults can still enjoy it. Trotta has done for astronomy what physics professor George Gamow did for understanding
the work of Albert Einstein in his classic “Mr. Tompkins in Wonderland.” If you are puzzled by the reports from the telescopes (Far-Seers) moving through space finding new things, then this book will satisfy the scientist (Student-Person) in you and perhaps spark your children’s curiosity. Perhaps one of them will become a Student-Person and discover something new in the All-There-Is and name it for you in gratitude for having read this book. — Michael Ramsey, Roanoke

What does August conjure up in your mind’s eye? Vacation? Last days of summer? Fishing and ice cream and sprinklers perhaps? For most of us, one little three-letter word is the most apropos description of this eighth month of the calendar: Hot. Growing up in Florida, August was a particularly sizzling white-hot month as measured by the thermometer. I grew up in a cinderblock house with no air conditioning, so you can trust me when I tell you: I know hot. Relief was most often found at the beach, but even there on the sandy shores, with the ocean breeze and the cooling waves, it was difficult to escape the humidity. As the great Yogi Berra is known for saying: “It ain’t the heat, it’s the humility.”

AUGUST 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
STORy by Kimberly DAlfereS
Truth be told, I don’t really mind the August heat and humidity. Yes, my stick-straight hair falls flat to my head as soon as I step out the front door. Walking barefoot across a sidewalk becomes a serious safety hazard and the 24/7 running of the A/C unit can produce one helluva electric bill. However, I’ll take heat and humidity over cold, snow and ice any day; here are a few reasons why: You don’t have to shovel sunshine. When you’re tempted to complain about the steaminess of your August morn, remind yourself that six months ago you were shoveling snow to clear a path to your mailbox. There is nothing fun about shoveling snow; zero fun on the fun-ometer. Pretty strappy sandals win out over cute boots. I do love my cute boots. A pair of killer black leather boots catapults any woman into Ruler of the Universe territory. However, a perfect pair of sexy slingbacks has the added benefit of showing off your lovely pink pedicure. Advantage: sandals. You don’t have to scrape humidity off your windshield. On a freezing cold January morning, when you’re already late for work or yoga class, there are few things worse than working up a sweat in your gloves, scarf and wool hat as you chip away at the layer of ice on the front windshield of your car. I’ll take a blazing hot leather car seat (tip from this Florida girl: sit on a towel!) over a frozen driveway any day. Fun summer drinks! I truly love summer’s bevy of delicious beverage options. Sipping a fruity, yet tart, lemonade, sweet tea or ice cold beer while dangling your feet over the edge of your dock and splashing the refreshing lake water just makes you go “ahhhh.” However, a hot toddy by the fire on a cold winter night is also something special. This one might be a tie. Because it’s August, I’d like to wish a happy birthday to all my fellow Virgos out there. Be cool, stay cool.
