The struggle is real Oversized sweaters. Aren’t they fabulous? Throw one on with the perfect pair of skinny jeans, and you’re not only stylish but comfortable, too. Sometimes, too comfortable. You eat right. You exercise. Some areas just won’t go away. The fall and winter months make it so easy to cover-up those trouble spots. Sadly, sweater weather doesn’t last forever. Here’s the deal... It doesn’t have to.

his is my absolute favorite time of the year. Why? Festivals, of course!
Held over several days later this month, both the Franklin County Agricultural Fair and Bedford County Fair celebrate the role that agriculture plays in our community. If you’ve never been, go. County fairs are not only a great time, but they’re also an educational experience! Plus, mark your calendars for the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. This is the perfect opportunity to tour eight amazing homes, and you can go either by land or by water. Perhaps best of all is that proceeds from the three-day tour support area charities. Want a sneak peek inside one of these homes? Turn to page 30 and take a mini-tour of the palatial Upland Shores home in The Water’s Edge. Finally, after receiving a record number of entries in our Gardens & Grounds contest, gardening columnist Catriona Tudor Erler features this year’s winners. Have a story idea to share? Let us know by emailing us: editor@ smithmountainlaker.com or messaging us via our Laker365 page on Facebook.

he previous owners of The Waterfront property in Moneta had broken all the rules of responsible lakeside landscaping. Uninterrupted lawn stretched from the house to the edge of the water. There were no plants to act as a buffer along the shore. Not only was the landscape boring, any fertilizers and chemicals used to maintain it had leached into the lake, polluting it. Then came Yin and Gerry Lewis. They moved to the lake full time from Northern Virginia in 2005, and set about creating a garden. Their plan was to celebrate the wooded location on their .87-acre lot by building paths that wind among the groves of trees and around beds filled with shade-loving perennials and shrubs. The result of their hard work has earned the Lewises first place in this year’s Gardens & Grounds Contest. The first garden task the Lewises tackled was to design and install the hardscape. They hired contractors to build stairs to the dock with landings that spread into wide decks large enough for lounging chairs, retaining walls and pavers, and put in a sprinkler system. They began with drip irrigation, but quickly realized that with the growing number of garden beds and plants an overhead sprinkler system made more sense. Meanwhile, Yin walked the property every morning with Rusty, their aged Brittany spaniel, planning where the paths would go to allow people to walk through the woods enjoying unfolding vistas and perspectives as they progress. The pathways were to loop and intersect so there would be no dead ends. Today, their current Brittany, Chipper, joyfully runs along those paths chasing squirrels and chipmunks. He never intrudes in the beds, instinctively knowing to remain on the paths.

Once Yin and Rusty had worked out the comfortable, natural flow of the paths, she and Gerry began the physical labor. In a team effort, Gerry does the “heavy lifting,” performing tasks, such as bringing in and spreading quality top soil, laying the metal edging that gives the shredded bark paths a clean definition, digging the holes for large plants, and moving plants that have grown too big for their space. He also hauled and arranged enormous rocks they found on the property, placing them to enhance the plantings. “I love rocks, especially when they’re covered in moss,” Yin said. “They lend so much character to the settings.” Yin researches to find shade-tolerant plants, puts in all but the really large ones and does the daily garden maintenance. In the fall Gerry helps Yin top-dress the beds. They rake all the fallen leaves and mulch them in their chipper machine, adding a blend of native and topsoil to the leaf mix. They spread the leafy organic blend on the beds, being careful not damage shallow tree roots by piling the mulch mixture too deeply on top of them. The result is a lush stroll garden with beds filled with a diversity of low-light plants that create a beautiful tapestry of colors and textures under the native trees, and a swath of lawn that sweeps down the slope in gentle curves through the middle, providing a sunny, open visual contrast to the shady woodland paths.
ABOVE. A series of steps and wide decks lead down the slope to the dock. Each large deck is furnished with comfortable seating, adding to the property’s living space. LEFT. Braun’s spikemoss, also known as arborvitae fern (Selaginella braunii), is one of the easiest spikemosses to grow in a woodland garden. The dark green, lacy, semi-evergreen fronds will grow 18 inches tall and 2 feet wide in about three years.
Favorite plants
There are nearly 2,000 plants in the garden, encompassing a rich variety of shade-tolerant perennials, trees and shrubs. Yin’s composition has variety, yet she is careful to avoid a chopped up, helter-skelter arrangement, putting in groups of the same plant to create impact. Despite having a mostly shaded garden, conifers are one of Yin’s favorite plants. “Wherever there’s enough sun, I like to plant specimen conifers,” she SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Before the Lewises created their garden, the property was bare of all but the native trees and an ailing lawn. BOTTOM. The curving lawn leads the eye through the center of the garden to the lake, while woodland paths on either side wind among lushly planted beds filled with a rich variety of shade-tolerant plants.
explained. In the past 12 years, she has collected 150 different conifer plants, including blue spruce Picea pungens ‘Globosa’ and Japanese black pine, Pinus thunbergii ‘Thunderhead’ with its thick, glossy green needles. Among all the conifers, Yin’s top pick is Hinoki false cypress Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Sunspray’. A dwarf golden form of Japanese Hinoki, it is a conical, upright plant with foliage that does not burn brown from too much sun exposure. Yin has planted eight in the garden, each creating a sense of sunshine on gray days. In the woods, she looks to shade-tolerant Japanese maples, with their variety of forms and sizes, for structure. She has acquired 16 different named varieties, each with distinctive foliage color and form. Her collection of almost 200 hosta varieties range from large specimen-sized plants such as ‘Dream Queen’, which grows 28 inches tall and spreads to 5 feet, to small miniatures just a few inches tall. ‘Dream Queen’ has a dramatic creamy yellow splash on the large, green-blue leaves. Another large one, ‘Paradigm’, has glossy, bright gold foliage rimmed with a wide, dark blue-green border. Miniature varieties include the evocatively named ‘Mouse Ears’ and ‘Mighty Mouse’, an 8-inch tall plant with thick, slug-resistant blue-green leaves with a creamy yellow margin. Yin has 15 different fern genera, including clusters of cinnamon and royal ferns (Osmunda cinnamonea and O. regalis), and 79 plants from the wood or buckler fern genus (Dryopteris). One of Yin’s particular favorites is Japanese beech fern Thelypteris decursive pinnata. “They spread gently and can be transplanted easily,” Yin said. “And they look almost translucent when backlit.” Woodland phloxes are another favorite plant group. Record keeping
An avid record keeper, Yin keeps track of all these plants, entering them on spreadsheets that document what she has purchased (both common and botanical names, plus any applicable hybrid or cultivar names), the number of plants, where and when she bought them, price she paid and where she put them in the garden. If a plant dies, she indicates the sad fact in the plant location column with “zzz.”
LEFT. Yin derives enormous pleasure working in the garden as well as walking the paths in the cool of the morning.
KeepIng gArden recordS You think you’ll remember what you planted or when a flower bloomed, but it’s easy to forget. Keeping a record of your garden helps build on accumulated knowledge and experience so you can repeat triumphs and avoid future errors. A loose-leaf notebook is great for keeping garden records because you can add pages as you need and move them around as you finesse the organization. Include heavy paper or photo album refills for mounting photographs (your own or from catalogs) and invoices. In addition to her spreadsheets, Yin taped all the labels that came with her plants onto pieces of paper, inserted them into protective sleeves and arranged them by their planted locations in a threering binder as a handy reference. Alternatively, you can keep the records on the computer in a spreadsheet or other format. Here’s the kind of information you should record: Plants: As you acquire new plants, record the botanical name and hybrid or cultivar. If possible, also list the names of plants already in your garden.

Source of your plants: This information is useful if you want to buy more, or if there is a problem with a plant. Planting date and exact location: It’s helpful to know how long a perennial, shrub or tree has been growing. Location is particularly important for bulbs and perennials that are late to emerge in spring. Use your property plat to accurately indicate where specific plants are growing. Fertilizer applications: Note the type, amount and date. This information helps for planning future fertilizer applications and can be helpful when troubleshooting growth problems. Pest problems and how you dealt with them: Keep records of pests, including the date they first appeared. Pests tend to keep an annual schedule, so this information will prepare you for the next year. In addition to listing what steps you took to deal with them, also record what worked and what didn’t. Flowering and fruiting time: This information is valuable to help plan season-long interest in the garden and/or continuous produce production.
Plant requirements: Pruning dates, fertilizing, pest control, staking and deadheading are among the many possible details you may want to record. Plant features: Fragrance, foliage color or texture, flower color, berries and other characteristics are worth remembering. Photographs: Take pictures of plant combinations you like as well as specific plants. It’s rewarding to look back at old photos to realize how much the garden has grown, matured, improved and where it could do with improvement. Plant deaths: If a plant succumbs, make a note of that, along with the reasons it died (to avoid future mistakes).

RIGHT. The Lewises keep garden tools handy, stored on a potting bench on the lower patio. Note the whiteboard on the wall to the right.
She also keeps a record of maintenance information, noting fertilization and pest control applications on a whiteboard hung outside on the wall at the far corner of the sheltered patio under the upper deck. After 12 years of planting and designing, Yin says the garden is 90 percent finished; there is an area near the water she still would like to plant as well as a few open spots in the woodland beds. Gerry quips that in his view, the garden is 120 percent done. The reality is that a garden is never finished. As the English novelist H.E. Bates declared, “A garden that is finished is dead.” Yin walks through the garden daily, evaluating successful plant combinations, planning new ones, assessing trees and shrubs that may have outgrown their space and keeping track of each plant’s health. “I like the cool, calming feeling of the garden,” she said. “The overall effect is subtle and pleasing. I’ve put a lot into the garden, but I get a lot out of it.”

wide open interior. Huge windows that provide sweeping views of Smith Mountain, Christmas Tree Island and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Visitors can see all this and more when they tour room after spacious room of this Upland Shores home in The Water’s Edge during the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour over Columbus Day weekend. There are few walls that interrupt the sight lines through the home and out the towering windows. That’s because the homeowners gave specific instructions to the architect: “We want to take advantage of full lake views from everywhere.” What makes the home especially spectacular is the rounded three-story window wall that extends from the lower level to the second floor gallery and an open balcony that links two wings of guest suites. This is a house of superlatives: the exterior is Texas limestone, including the dock house; the roof has an Old World look but uses thick molded polymer shingles that are lighter than slate; there are copper
gutters, downspouts and copper snow stops on the roof. The garage doors are Brazilian cherry with 12inch post and beam accents. The interior doors are American cherry, and there are exquisite cherry bookshelves, cabinets and armoires custom-made by Daniel A. Peters Woodworking Inc. Four of the bedrooms all have overhead wooden beams, and there are three limestone-faced, wood-burning fireplaces. The flooring is 8-inch, French-cut white oak with a clear finish — the homeowners tried 30 different floor/stain combinations before deciding to leave it natural. The three levels of living space are linked by a dreamy curved stairway that looks like something out of a movie. The finished home encompasses 11,459 square feet, not counting the garage, mechanical room, deck or screened porch — like the interior, these are all finished with plaster walls, ceilings and moldings. All told, it took two and a half years to build the house. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

The homeowners’ inspiration for the house was to make the most of the views of the lake, but they also wanted it to have an updated French country feeling, like a renovated old French house.

The kitchen has a bank of windows overlooking the lake. The countertops and island are marble. Outside there is a hot tub on the patio and an outdoor fireplace with a reclaimed wood mantle. “It was great to work with these homeowners who had so many creative ideas — pages and pages of drawings in their notebook,” said Bob Bauer, of Robert B. Bauer Building Contractors Inc. “There’s a lot to see in this house. We were very blessed to be a part of building their dream home.” All the views, creativity, spectacular design and decor of this home can be enjoyed on the SML Charity Home Tour on Columbus Day weekend, Oct. 6-8. T
he scent of sauce and spices wafting through the air, the clinking of silverware as the table is set, the murmur of family and friends engrossed in a lively conversation — you take in all the familiar traits of a fun, festive meal about to be served. Only this time, the cooking isn’t happening between four walls and the table being set isn’t enclosed in the formal dining room. Instead, dinner is being served under the canopy of a sunset-colored sky and leafy trees. And your guests are gathered in the fresh, open air of the deck or patio, sipping drinks a stone’s throw from the sparkling waters of Smith Mountain Lake. Because finally, you have that outdoor kitchen you’ve been dreaming of. If this sounds familiar, you’re among countless others who have — or want to bring — the most popular of indoor pastimes into nature with an outdoor kitchen. After all, SML is a beautiful place to be best enjoyed outside. But before you start searching for stone ovens or scouting out an installation location, first consider consulting an expert. Cindy Hall, a cabinetry specialist with Capps Home Building Center, who has helped area residents create and install custom outdoor kitchens for years, shares a few tips for helping to make your outdoor kitchen dreams come true. 7 TIPS to consider before building an outdoor kitchen Mark your calendar The process of installing an outdoor kitchen takes time. A typical timeframe for cabinets to arrive after ordering them is three to four weeks, Hall said, and installation takes about two weeks. There are other obstacles, too, such as weather. If you’re installing the kitchen to use for a specific event, start planning early.
Be present for the process Hall said the planning process usually begins during a design meeting. This is when you pick out what materials you want to use and what your layout will be. From that meeting, a 3-D design is generated for you to look at and agree upon before materials are ordered. This means you’ll need to make yourself available to be part of the meetings and decisions needed during the process.
Make it personal How can you make your outdoor kitchen personal to you and your family? “By selecting the design and materials,” Hall said. “That’s how you can put your personal touch on each element of the project.” Other considerations can include lighting, landscaping, wiring for a sound system and adding other elements, such as a canopy or heater, to provide additional comfort to the outdoor space.
Measure first, price second Don’t expect a price estimate at the initial consultation, unless you have all the information available. Cost is often difficult to quote without measurements, Hall said. “Each design is different, so cost varies. Bring us measurements (call to find out exactly what’s needed) and then we can come up with an estimate.”
Get an appliance assist To get the right appliances that are needed for the space you have, Hall said a professional installer can help.
expect Maintenance Most outdoor kitchens are built to withstand the elements. Although Hall said some homeowners opt to use wood products, such as cabinets, it’s not something she would advise. Regardless of what products you choose, Hall said there can still be upkeep involved. Ask your professional what kind of maintenance to expect of various materials and designs during the planning stage.
stick with siMple It’s easy to get caught up in elaborate, celebrity-style outdoor kitchen designs, but Hall said most homeowners are happiest with a design that’s “simple and functional.” And let’s face it — cooking and hosting a casual dinner surrounded by the lake is beautiful and impressive enough.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
A worthy investment John and Denise Stroebel were inspired to build their own outdoor kitchen at their LakeWatch Plantation home two years ago after seeing those of other residents at Smith Mountain Lake. “We really liked where people had outdoor fire pits by the dock and wanted to have a place by the water where we could congregate, have a meal. A place where we could further our ties to the water than just the dock,” John Stroebel said. After a few conversations with local experts, the Stroebels used Dan Chitwood for the architectural planning and design, and the builder for their house, David Perdue, to build the project. Ferguson’s supplied the appliances, and Sonny Dell added landscaping around the final product. “We had an idea of where we wanted to put it, but Dan Chitwood really helped us choose the best place where the kitchen would tie in with a pergola and garden benches and the fire pit would face the lake,”
Stroebel said. “We started planning in May and wanted the project done by my brother’s birthday in early June. It only took about three weeks to build everything.” Along with the kitchen and fire pit, the Stroebels opted for a pantry, a refrigerator, a high-end grill and meat rotisserie and a smoker. John Stroebel is a music lover, so installing speakers that run off a wireless computer system also were a must. As for other homeowners about to build their own outdoor kitchen? Stroebel does have one word of caution: “You’re going to have to get beyond the sticker shock of what it takes to build an outdoor kitchen and patio. When you much add to it, and consider the special qualities of the outdoor appliances, it may be a lot more expensive than you think.” It’s worth it when the memories that were hoped for, come true. “Having the fire going at night, doing s’mores with the grandchildren. That’s probably how we’ve enjoyed it the most,” he said.

E
thel Mackenhimer Fralin admits to having slowed down in the past couple of years. “I can’t do all the things I used to,” she said. But Ethel, who turned 102 last February, is fiercely independent. In the Franklin County home she shares with daughters, Gloria Van and Gayle Dianne, Ethel insists on going it alone as she guides her walker through the doorway of their home and onto a sunporch. She’s impeccably dressed in soft lilac pants and a matching jacket, accented with a beautiful pearl brooch. Although Ethel has battled some health issues in recent months, and her hearing and vision aren’t what they used to be, her mind seems sharp as she easily recounts memories of yesteryear. Many of those memories are connected to one of her favorite things – gardening. A lifelong farm girl, Ethel loved planting a garden every year. Even after she and her husband, the late Samuel “Sam” Phillip Fralin, had moved their family to Silver Spring, Maryland, Ethel grew a garden, which was against the rules in the homeowners association. “I planted a garden around the fence,” she recalled with a wry smile. “You weren’t supposed to do that, but I did it anyway.” Both Ethel and her husband were born and raised in Franklin County. Ethel — the sixth of 13 of Monroe and Josephine Mackenhimer’s children — was born just a stone’s throw away from the home where she now lives. Ethel and Sam were married for more than 60 years, had eight children and lived in several different states, including West Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland. Van and Dianne, as they’re known to family and friends, remember that, after they were grown, their parents would leave Maryland in April and return to the 200-acre family farm in Truevine where they would live until October. “Mom and Dad would come down here when it was time to plant a garden,” Van said. “They would can [the harvested vegetables] and bring them back home to Maryland.” Ethel said she and her husband had plans to one day return to Franklin County permanently. “Me and my husband always wanted to come back after he retired,” she said. But Sam, who died in 1995, never got that chance.
OPPOSITE PAGE. Ethel Mackenhimer Fralin sits in the front room of the Truevine home she shares with her daughters, Gloria Van and Gayle Dianne. ABOVE. At their 60th wedding anniversary, Ethel and Sam Fralin (seated, center) took this family photo with their children, Herbert Earl (seated, from left), Robert “Bobby” Wilson, Sheila Lynn (standing), Gloria Van, Thomas Harvey, Naomi Lois and Gayle Dianne. Herbert, Thomas and another child, Samuel Phillip Jr., are deceased.
Shortly after Sam’s funeral and burial in Truevine, Van, Dianne and Ethel, who were still living in Maryland, had an epiphany while swinging on the front porch swing of the old family home. “We were all sitting there and we all agreed, ‘This is so peaceful. Maybe we should consider building a home down here when we retire,’” Van said. Returning their mother to her roots, they built a home on the property and moved into it in 2002, but it was an adjustment for the sisters. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Two other birthday parties have taken place since then — her 101st and 102nd — and there are plans to celebrate when Ethel turns 103 on Feb. 28.

“We’d never lived in the country,” Van said. “It was a big change.” Van and Dianne, who had both worked on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., weren’t accustomed to farm life. “We didn’t know what we were getting into,” Dianne added. “When you live in the city most of your life and you come to the farm … that’s a big change.” When the sisters had wanted a small garden to grow a few vegetables, Bobby, their oldest brother, who also lives on the property planted two footballfield sized plots. It was more than the sisters had bargained for. “We’ve worked harder here than we did in our jobs,” Van said laughing. “They learned what farming was all about,” Ethel said with a chuckle. “I was born on the farm; I grew up on it.” As a young girl, Ethel regularly helped her father with planting and harvesting crops. “We started when we were little with a horse and plow,” she said.
SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER
Ethel has always liked working with her hands, whether it was canning vegetables or sewing her kids’ clothes. “If our shoes got a hole in the bottom, she’d put on a whole new sole,” Van recalled. “Mom is a jack-of-all-trades.” When Ethel and Sam lived in Maryland, Ethel helped her husband finish the basement of their home, adding a bedroom, a kitchen, a family room and a bathroom to the space. “He wanted to sit down and rest when he got tired,” she said. “I like to keep going until the work is done.” That work ethic and philosophy stem from Ethel’s positive thinking. “If you doubt yourself, you’re not going to do much,” she said. “You’ve got to believe you can do it to start with.” In recent years, brittle bones may have slowed Ethel down, but her daughters credit her health care team with keeping her moving. Late last year, Ethel had a physical therapist who worked with her for several months.

“She really got mom motivated,” Van said. “We give her a lot of credit.” It’s evident from looking at the photos throughout the Fralin home that family is important — in addition to the eight children, there are seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren — and everyone is always included in celebrating milestones. When Ethel turned 100, her family threw her a party at Jefferson Center in Roanoke, with more than 100 people in attendance. “That was the nicest one I had,” Ethel said of the fete. “Tell them who came, mom,” Van said to her mother. Sheepishly, Ethel responded, “My doctor.” Ethel’s daughters playfully tease their mother about an orthopedist, Dr. Omar Elkhamra, who treated Ethel when she broke her wrist and attended that milestone birthday celebration. Two other birthday parties have taken place at The Westlake since then — her 101st and 102nd — and there are plans to celebrate when Ethel turns 103 on Feb. 28. While she might not be able to do all the physical activities she used to, Ethel is content to pass the time reading, watching the news on TV or looking out at the vast landscape around their home from her easy chair. “She reads her Bible all the time,” Dianne said. “She loves to read.” When asked what the secret was to her longevity, Ethel responded, “Try to do the best you can and live a clean life.”

While the days might be getting shorter, the temperature is still ideal for jumping in the boat and heading out to cruise around the lake. One fun activity that many lakers enjoy is participating in the Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour. All the homes on the tour offer access either by land or by water, which makes this tour unlike any other in the country. you’ll get great ideas for landscaping and decorating while also learning about the homes’ products and services. From the water, you’ll find that the homes are easily identifiable by orange dock flags; on land, there is ample free parking available for motorists. Orange and black marker signs mark each turn along the roads, but it’s also helpful to use a lake map and have a gPS device handy. When heading out by water, properly prepare by ensuring there’s enough fuel for the trip, carrying a charged cellphone and providing everyone on board with a properly fitting life jacket. Life jackets should be worn or on deck, readily accessible. be sure to keep an eye on the weather for safe traveling. The tour is held over three days, Oct. 6 through 8, rain or shine. Tickets are good for one visit per home. Check out the following pages for directions — we’ve included both for land and water — as well as home descriptions and photos.

2017 charity home tour | Home by Home
Directions - by water Water directions to the homes begin in the vicinity of Hales Ford Bridge, heading toward the dam, but homes may be visited in any order that suits your point of departure. (Home numbers below correspond to directions by land.) Boaters should prepare for a day on the water by checking all safety equipment, fuel level and making sure there are properly-sized life jackets on deck — and preferably worn — by all crew members. Take along a fully-charged phone, charger, lake map, sunscreen and sufficient hydration. Please dock only at docks showing a Home Tour dock banner or as otherwise directed by volunteers. Should you become stranded, Sea Tow is available at 540-719-5555 or marine radio channel 16. Beginning at Hales Ford Bridge near the entrance to Bridgewater Marina:

Sowers Home
Mischel Home
625 Winding Waters Drive, Moneta
Travel approximately 10-12 minutes downstream from Hales Ford Bridge. Pass marker R25 headed south past a flat, low point with 3-4 medium-sized trees and stabilized with light-colored rip-rap. Leave no-wake markers to starboard and head toward the condo building deep in the cove toward your left, watching for a tan home with white railings. Look for the sign for 625 Winding Waters Drive and the orange Home Tour vertical banner will be visible on the dock. 15-18 minutes south of Hales Ford Bridge. (GPS N 37 05 332; W 74 38 232).
127 Atlantic Ave., Moneta
Exit along the right side shore of the cove, passing no-wake markers on right. Head downstream on the main channel, entering the S-curve at R21. Spot the Park Place water tower as you exit the S-curve and steer directly toward it. The dock for 127 Atlantic Ave. will be just to the right of a round yellow buoy, which marks a rock and shoal at the home next door. 8-10 minutes. (N 37 04 597; W 79 37 329).

1
Allen Home
Holmes Home
103 Bay Terrace, Huddleston
Head toward no-wake markers, turning left to briefly head farther up the creek. Enter first cove on the right and look for fourth dock on right with green cedarshake siding. 2 minutes. (N 37 04 000; W 79 31 512).
204 Woodland Terrace, Huddleston
Exit Witcher Creek by leaving W1 fairly wide to starboard. Then follow righthand shore about ½ mile, looking for tan home behind Rock Island with fancy lattice on lower level nestled in the shoreline trees. This home faces directly toward the dam. 5-7 minutes. Note: Guests must climb 55 stairs to reach the home’s lower level. (N 37 03 262; W 79 32 493).
6
Lohr Home
27 Navigation Point, Moneta
Continue downstream toward Vista Pointe Condominiums in the distance. Round marker 11A into Compass Cove (before Rabbit Island and The Landing Restaurant), look for a blue-gray home on right with a tree on the point. 5 minutes. Note: the Lohr dock is inside a no-wake zone. (N 37 03 478; W 79 36 463).
8
Upland Shores Home
331 Upland Shores Drive, Penhook
Head due south toward R2, keeping Rock Island to port. Round R2 and steer past R4, keeping small islands to right. Steer toward Vista Pointe then pass B1 on the left as you enter the Blackwater River. Steer southwest (approximately 200 degrees) toward The Water’s Edge in the distance. The home’s three-story tower will be visible through the trees ahead. 12-15 minutes. (N 37 01 335; W 79 36 217).
2
Nguyen/Stacy Home
228 Deerwood Drive, Huddleston
Return to main channel, keeping Rabbit Island (and R11) to starboard. Point toward Vista Pointe. Pass R8 with bow pointed toward twin cell towers on Smith Mountain. Pass R4, then R2 on the left and the dam’s floating barrier becomes visible on your right. Angle left toward W1, which is at the entrance to Witcher Creek, then deeper into the creek along its right-hand shore. When three no-wake buoys become visible on right, angle left toward brown peaked house situated high on a mostly-cleared lot. 20-25 minutes. (N37 03 508; W 79 32 130).
7
Cromwell Home
8991 Burnt Chimney Road, Wirtz
Continue up the Blackwater River, passing Christmas Tree Island. Pelican Point Marina will be on your left, then B11 and B13. As you leave Lucky Island to port and bypass the entrance to Gills Creek (G1) on your right, continue through the mini S-curve (B17-B22). Once you pass B24, angle slightly to starboard and look for home along right shore. (N 37 02 693; W79 41 030).
To return to starting point: As appropriate, keep to the right side of channels as practical. A direct run back to Hales Ford Bridge will take about 50-60 minutes.

hen a new restaurant opens at SML, word gets out fairly quickly, especially with social media. Take, for example, The Copper Kettle Co. restaurant in Hardy. In early June, someone posted the following question to the Smith Mountain Lake News & Events page on Facebook: “Who’s been to the new restaurant at Indian Point? I know they have breakfast on weekends. Only been open a couple of weeks!” That got followers on the page chiming in, including the restaurant’s owner and manager Mickey Martin. “I had decided it was time to open my own place,” said Martin, who previously worked for The Westlake and The Waterfront country clubs. The slogan on the menu sums up what The Copper Kettle offers: “Your place for old-fashioned, homecooked dishes like Grandma used to make.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

TOP. Those dining alfresco at The Copper Kettle can enjoy the lake scenery and on-water activities around Indian Point cove. RIGHT. Chicken Francese is one of the Copper Kettle’s crowd favorites. The dish features a lightly floured chicken breast dipped in egg wash and panseared with a white wine, lemon-butter sauce served over angel hair pasta with garlic bread. FAR RIGHT. The Appalachian Breakfast buffet is available Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Martin recruited head chef Sonny D (his last name is DiPaulo), who previously served as assistant chef at The Waterfront, and credited him for what’s on the menu. “He learned country cooking there and had previous experience with Italian dishes,” Martin said. “That makes a really diverse menu possible.” The menu includes beef dishes, such as meatloaf, ribeye and filet steaks, beef tenderloin tips and halfpound burgers as well as seafood entrees, including catfish, popcorn shrimp, mussels, mahi-mahi, crabcakes and salmon. For those craving Italian, there is shrimp scampi, lasagna, chicken parmigiana and a “farm fresh vegetable toss” over linguine with garlic bread. There also are those home-cooked dishes — roast

turkey, southern-fried pork chop, Salisbury steak and shrimp and grits. Dessert lovers may indulge in a slice of coconut cream pie, cake (red velvet, chocolate and hummingbird) or creamy banana pudding, served in a mini-Mason jar. There also is a separate menu for lunch and one just for kids. Breakfast fans may want to try the Appalachian breakfast buffet, available Saturdays and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The all-you-want buffet features scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, home fries, grits, pancakes and biscuits, sausage gravy as well as strawberry and chocolate gravy. The restaurant has about 18 tables, inside and out on the deck. Those dining alfresco can enjoy
the lake scenery and on-water activities around the Indian Point cove. There is plenty of boat and vehicle parking, too. Lake resident Jeff Wetter recently dined at the restaurant with friends after having visited for lunch the week prior. “We loved the food and wanted to give a relaxing evening meal a try,” Wetter said. Although the restaurant opened before it obtained a license to sell alcohol, Martin said word-of-mouth through the community and on social media has been favorable. “The first year for a restaurant is always a challenge,” Martin said. “We made a significant investment in clean-up, furniture and equipment to get the place open, and we’re working to build a good base of resident customers who will visit us often during the off-season.” The Copper Kettle Co. is open Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Catering and online ordering also are available. The restaurant is located on Morewood Road near Westlake Corner and by water near channel marker R37. For more information, visit thecopperkettleco. com.

There’s also traditional lasagna with marinara sauce, Italian sausage, beef as well as ricotta and mozarella cheeses. BELOW. Diners take advantage of the weekend Appalachian Breakfast buffet.

Now in its second year, the Labor Day Fun Fest was created in 2016 from a similar event that’s held during Fourth of July weekend. Sponsored by Moneta Volunteer Fire Department, the Sept. 2 event will include live music by The Worx, games and activities for kids, food and craft vendors. Moneta Fire Department Chief Jeremiah Calhoun recalled planning last year’s Labor Day Fun Fest. “I lined up the band, vendors and started to blow up social media,” he said.
The turnout — 3,200 people! — exceeded Calhoun’s expectations. “At that point I told my members that this was a good thing for the community, because usually the only time we see people is during a call,” he added. Proceeds from both Fun Fest events help the department upgrade equipment and buy supplies. “These two events are our biggest fundraisers of the year,” Calhoun said. “I want to tell the community thank you for the support.”

SML Antique & Classic Boat Show and Festival The antique and classic boats you’ll find at this show are not only beautiful after having been lovingly restored by their owners, but each one also has its own unique history. “There are so many stories and so much history to these boats,” said Art Hampton of Fort Myers, Florida, who makes the annual trek to the lake to participate in the festival. Hampton’s own boat, a 19-foot, 1958 Chris Craft Capri, sat in storage for 34 years before, at the urging of his late wife, Nancy, he decided to restore it. Working seven days a week, the boat was returned to its original glory 18 months later. Hampton renamed the boat It’s Someday and showed it to Nancy.

“She cried. I mean, she cried like a baby,” Hampton said. “Her thing — and my thing — was always ‘someday.’ Everything was always ‘someday.’” Hampton said his wife was able to enjoy the boat for several years before she died after battling cancer. As you walk through the show and festival, take a few moments to stop and chat with the boat captains. Their stories will delight and amaze you. Also included in the festivities are craft and food vendors as well as activities for kids.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a trio of recent thefts from businesses near Westlake Corner. The first theft occurred sometime during the evening of March 24 when a patio set was stolen from True Organics on Scruggs Road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Maj. Mike Bowman said employees noticed the furniture
was missing when they arrived for work the following day. Outdoor wicker furniture was reported stolen March 27 from David James Homes’ model in LakeWatch Plantation near the Franklin County Family YMCA. The General Store on Scruggs Road also reported two outdoor chairs and a picnic table were stolen March 29. Rita Grisetti, co-owner of The General Store, said she never expected something like that would ever happen. “We have never had any problems.” Grisetti said that she once acci-
dentally left store items on display outside overnight, but when she returned the following morning, the items were still there. “Now we are paranoid,” Grisetti said, adding that she will no longer be as trusting. The two chairs taken from The General Store had been secured by a cable that was cut. Grisetti said the 10-foot picnic table would have needed a lot of strength to lift, as well as a large truck or trailer to haul it off. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported it has no leads at this time. Investigators are look-
ing at surveillance video from area businesses as well as checking with area pawn shops and websites to see if there has been any effort to resell the items, said Capt. Paul Caldwell. The sheriff’s office asks that business owners and residents consider moving their lawn furniture indoors or to a place where it can be monitored by security cameras or alarms to prevent future thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Caldwell at 352-5174 or paul. caldwell@franklincountyva.gov.

Known as the “death climb” by runners, it was added to make the 5K one of the most difficult around, according to race organizer Lauren Acker. “The death climb is a big part of the 50K race,” Acker said. “We decided to make it part of the 5K so it would be the hardest 5K ever.” While the area had experienced heavy rain over the past few days, runners experienced good weather for race day. The course was mostly dry by the start of the
race. “The weather was beautiful,” Acker said. The top finisher in the 5K was Josh Gilbert of Roanoke with a time of 31:48. He admitted that the 1,300-foot climb was difficult. “I don’t know if there is a harder 5K anywhere around here,” Gilbert said. Erica Martin of Moneta was the top female finisher in the 5K with a time of 1:02:35. Stephen Mohr of Arlington, Virginia was the top finisher in the 50K with a time of 4:25:32. He placed fourth in last year’s 50K at the dam. Lindsay DiMarco of Durham, North Carolina was the top female finisher in the 50K with a time of 5:52:55.

Hubs and I walk hand-in-hand along the cobblestone walkway as the tiny lights twinkling through the tree branches light the path with a luminous glow. Storefronts are decorated with come-hither displays of tinsel, fluffy snow and red and green ribbons and bows. A store door opens and the sweet sounds of Christmas music drift our way. “Here comes Santa Claus…” And it’s October. Somewhere along the way, we’ve lost our control over the holiday marketing experience. There was a time when the celebration of Christmas had one month — December. October had Halloween, November had Thanksgiving, and December was the blissful conclusion of the year when we joyfully exchanged gifts with friends and loved ones and, for many, celebrated religious and family traditions. I don’t know how it happened exactly, but slowly the Christmas “push-out” inched its way up into November and is now morphing its way over into October. Somehow it’s become acceptable for cities to deco-

rate the downtown lampposts with Styrofoam candy canes in early November. Advertising that proclaims “Only 60 days ‘til Christmas! Hurry in for your best bargain shopping!” now pop up on my favorite internet sites. It’s time for the good folk to rise up and take back control of our calendar. We might’ve lost November, but I’m drawing the line at October. October is for fall. October is for pumpkins and scarecrows and kettle corn. A Santa sighting should not happen in October. Now, before all the haters swarm in and inundate me with “Bah Humbug!” diatribes, hear me out: I love the Christmas holiday. Many of my fondest family memories are wrapped in the hubbub and excitement of our Dec. 25 festivities. I’m just asking for a little restraint. We should be able to concentrate all the Christmas celebration goodness into 25 days. I propose a few new holiday rejoicing rules: No Santa sightings before the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Santa is a busy guy. He’s got all those elves to manage and those magic reindeer to feed, not to mention the sleigh that needs an oil change and a new battery. Give Santa a break and let him rest until the parade. No Christmas sales before mid-December. The marketers can have all the sales they want, knock yourselves out. Just don’t call a sale a Christmas sale until it’s near Christmas. I’ll come to your Veteran’s Day sale if you offer that cute little cocktail dress I’ve been eyeing for 50 percent off; I promise. If there are Halloween decorations in the windows, it’s too soon for garland and Christmas lights. Santa should not be holding a pumpkin. Rudolph should not be wearing a scary clown mask. No playing of Christmas songs until Dec. 1. It’s the 12 days of Christmas, not the 12 days of Columbus Day. “Jingle Bells” is a fine little tune, but I don’t want to hear it while I’m handing out Halloween candy. No Christmas cookies at Thanksgiving Day dinner. In November you get pumpkin pie, not sugar cookies with green and red sprinkles. Wishing everyone a fun-filled Santa-less October.
