ecause I never learned to play an instrument or read music, I have a deep appreciation for those who can. Fortunately, there’s wonderful live music everywhere at the lake this time of year, including the annual Lyrics on the Lake festival, a five-day event that features nearly three dozen songwriters playing concerts at area venues to raise money for charity. Check out www.lyricsonthelake.com for a complete schedule. Speaking of music, don’t miss our feature on the lake’s steel drum bands and learn more about music director Richard Rudolph. Also, find out what’s playing at the popular Floyd Country Store in Floyd in the latest Day Trips installment of our Jewel of the Blue Ridge series. Traversing this enormous lake by boat can be daunting to even the most-seasoned skipper. Fortunately, the lake’s channel markers can help safely guide you along. And if you’re looking for a place to launch your boat or take a dip, check out our feature on the lake’s public access points. Bats are beneficial

june 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

STOry by Catriona tudor ErlEr

I

t’s time to reconsider any prejudices you may have about bats. They don’t suck your blood, fly into your hair or attack. According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, less than half of 1 percent of all bats carry rabies. Bats are voracious insect eaters, making them a valuable source for pest control. According to the National Wildlife Federation, scientists estimate that bats have saved the United States somewhere between $3.7 and $54 billion in pest control services every year, eating bugs that attack important crops. At the lake, bats mean fewer mosquitoes and other pesky insects. Our local bat varieties are all insectivores, and eat half their body weight in insects per night. According to the DGIF county distribution maps, of the 16 bat species found in Virginia, six live in the three-county region of the lake — the big brown bat, the little brown bat, the eastern red bat, the hoary bat, the northern myotis and the silver-haired bat. There was a time when the little brown bat was the most populous insect-eating bat in the state, including the lake. They eat moths, midges, mayflies and aquatic insects, foraging high over trees, lawns and pastures, or skimming 1 or 2 yards above the lake. However, according to Cedric Short of Blue Ridge Wildlife and Pest Management, in the past 7 to 10 years their population has declined 95 to 99 percent due to white-nose syndrome, a disease that is named for the white fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, that infects the skin of the muzzle, ears and wings of hibernating bats. Bat populations also are at risk of decline due to habitat loss and pesticides. Most bat species have low reproduction rates, making it difficult for them to recover quickly after declines. Valued for their role in a balanced ecology, bats are protected in Virginia (a captured bat must be relocated, not killed).

CAuTIOn, BAT GuAnO Bat guano can harbor Histoplasma capsulatum, an airborne fungus that can cause histoplasmosis. Symptoms appear about 17 days after exposure, and include chest pain, chills, cough, fever, joint and muscle aches and stiffness, rash and shortness of breath. While the problem is most prevalent in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, err on the side of caution if you must be in a space with guano. Put on gloves and cover your nose and mouth. Bring in a professional to clean the fungi spores.

Bat houses

Bat Conservation international

A big brown bat is roosting. At the lake, about 95 percent of the bats that roost in attics and other manmade structures are big brown bats.

22

Bats are great neighbors, but most people don’t want them as houseguests. According to Cedric Short, at the lake, about 95 percent of the bats that roost in attics and other manmade structures are big brown bats. Typically, there are 30 to 40 big brown bats roosting in an attic, although the colonies can vary in size from five to 100. If you have unwanted bats in your attic or under the eaves, DGIF suggests setting up watch outside your house about half an hour after sunset to see the exit points when the bats leave for an evening of foraging. Once the bats have left (be sure there are no young left behind, especially between May and August), cover the hole with a wire mesh, such as window screen material. Bear in mind that they can squeeze through a ¼-inch gap. As Short pointed out, they use existing structural defects to get inside. The problem is that a locked-out bat is likely to resettle in a nearby structure in the same neighborhood, simply moving the problem down the road. However, one solution is to provide alternative roosting spots.

june 2017 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

To encourage bats to hang around, consider building or purchasing bat houses to place about your property. Bats have specific needs that must be met for them to safely occupy the housing you provide. There are websites with instructions for building bat houses, as well as a variety of houses available commercially. Before you purchase a pre-made bat house or build your own, familiarize yourself with what bats need. Short pointed out that many bat houses are touted as being able to accommodate far more bats than is actually healthy for the flying mammals. For example, a seven-chamber bat house can fit nearly 600 bats inside, but is better for only 300. There are three primary components to setting up bat houses so the intended occupants will actually want to use it: good design, good construction and proper placement. According to Bat Conservation and Management Inc., bat house features to look for include: ■ Structures large enough to offer a range of stable temperatures. Bats prefer larger structures rather than tiny, bird house-sized boxes. Bats will use both single- and multi-chambered bat houses; however a multi-chamber house improves bats’ ability to regulate their temperature. ■ Roughened interior wood for bats to cling to. (Some commercial boxes have stapled wire or plastic mesh inside to provide a rough surface. Eventually the staples will rust and come loose, potentially puncturing the bats and/or tearing their wings.) ■ A vertical landing plate with grooves for grip that’s at least 4-inches by 18-inches.

SHOReLIneS Lake & Garden ■ Shingled roofs to extend the life of the house and provide insulation for temperature control inside. ■ A box made of rot-resistant wood, such as red cedar, with sealed seams. A coat of paint helps protect even rot-resistant materials. ■ Recent research shows that a tall, openbottomed bat house is better than small, closed bottom designs that tend to attract more parasites. ■ Use recently produced bat house plans that reflect the most current research and understanding of bats’ roosting requirements. Many publications and online sources offer out-of-date plans, and many pre-made houses also are out-of-date. ■ Be cautious using recycled lumber that may contain pesticides or preservative poisons.

Bat house placement

The greatest bat house in the world will never attract a bat unless it is properly placed. Location considerations should include: ■ A spot that gets a minimum of seven hours of morning sun. ■ Access to a permanent water source. ■ An area away from brightly lit areas, especially where dusk-to-dawn lights will shine into the box.

BELOW. Little brown myotis emerge from a bat house array at Juniata Valley High School in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.

FUn BAT FAcTS Bats are the only mammals that can fly. There are almost 1,000 different bat species in the world. They represent almost one quarter of all mammal species. Big brown bats are reported to be one of the fastest bats, reaching speeds of up to 40 mph. According to Bat Conservation International, one little brown bat can eat 60 medium-sized moths or 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in one night. Bats comprise the order called Chiroptera, Latin for “hand wing.” Their wings are essentially flaps of skin connecting their long fragile fingers together. Bats use echolocation (sound waves and echoes) to avoid obstacles during flight and to capture flying insect prey.

By providing roosting spots for bats, such as the eastern red bat, homeowners can reduce nuisance pests and those that carry diseases.

■ Positioned away from roads where the bats will be vulnerable to car traffic during their dawn return to the roost. ■ Set away from air conditioning vents or areas where smoke or strong wind can disturb the bats. ■ Located in an area where no one will disturb the house while the bats are inside. ■ A location where you can get safe access for yearly inspections to affirm that the box is still sound, and there are no wasps or hornets taking up residence. Whatever bat house design you select, make sure it is certified by the North American Bat House Research Project, which is part of Bat Conservation International. Bats are an integral part of the ecosystem and are a valuable source of organic pest control. By providing roosting spots for them, you can help reduce nuisance pests as well as those that carry garden and human diseases. f you are among the thousands who boat on Smith Mountain Lake, you’re aware of how our system of navigation aids can help you find your way around, especially when you venture on portions of the lake with which you are less familiar. The lake’s channel and hazard markers — plus a current lake map or chart — will get you to any lake destination and back confidently, safely and without unplanned excursions into out-of-the-way coves and creeks that are, literally, out of your way. It wasn’t always that way. Sgt. Karl Martin, who has patrolled SML for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries since 1972 and has, undoubtedly, logged more time on the waterway than anyone else, recalls the early days when calls from disoriented boaters — mostly fishermen — were routine. “Early on, someone got lost most every night,” Martin said. “There were only a few markers that weren’t very bright and almost no lights on shore. I would get called out to help find someone who was lost and escort them to safety. It wasn’t unusual to spend the night on the lake, waiting for a hint of daylight to disclose where we were.” In 1967, a year after moving to the lake, Lakeside Marina and Construction owner Dickie Dill finished building a pile driver so he could put in a dock on his newly purchased lake property. But as word got out, Dill spent all of his time driving pilings for others, including helping to install the lake’s channel markers. He recalled a failed first attempt to install a marker near the dam. “A.B. Tuck dropped a can buoy tethered to a cement-filled 55-gallon drum from the bow of his pontoon boat near the current site of R1,” Dill said. “The anchor must’ve landed on a steep slope because

SHOReLIneS On the Water the buoy disappeared underwater, never to be seen again. I reckon it’s still down there.” According to Dill, a tri-county reservoirs committee contracted for the first navigation marker poles to be driven in the late 1960s. Jurisdiction passed to a new group called the Business Development Association, which, in 1970, became the Smith Mountain Lake Association as its focus shifted to environmental and lake community issues. Former Appalachian Power executive Duncan Kennedy chaired the SMLA’s first navigation committee, which expanded the system of pole-mounted lighted markers on the Roanoke and Blackwater rivers. “Most of those were powered by 110-volt lines run underwater from shore,” Dill said. “By the late ‘70s you could safely run either river in pitch black by just pointing your bow toward the next visible light.” Other lights were powered by batteries that had to be replaced on an ongoing basis, sometimes monthly. Until 2010, the lighted markers had been maintained by the Smith Mountain Lake Policy Advisory Board, the predecessor to the Tri-County Lakes Administrative Commission. PAB had petitioned for and obtained funds from the Virginia General Assembly to upgrade the lights to solar power. Following the issuance of the new license for the Smith

BELOW. Marker No. 1 for each channel currently shows a white light from dusk to dawn and during other periods of low visibility, but Appalachian soon will change these to red or green to correspond with U.S. Coast Guard standards for markers of each color.

Mountain Project, Appalachian Power assumed responsibility for operating and maintaining the channel markers, although TLAC has continued to work closely with Appalachian. Since that time, Appalachian has updated all 153 channel markers to U.S. Coast Guard standards, according to company spokesperson John Shepelwich. White signs with green and red letters and numbers were replaced with red and green signs with reflective letters and numbers of the same color. Additionally, flash rates have been standardized, with a slower pattern used on long, straight stretches of water and quick flashes showing at the entrances of channels and in curves to alert boaters to changes in the course of the waterway.

extending the system into the creeks

White lights at the entrances to the Blackwater River and Craddock, Beaverdam, Gills, Witcher, Hatcher and Walton’s creeks will soon be replaced with colored lights that also meet U.S. Coast Guard standards, Shepelwich said. In addition, some of those channel markers will be relocated to alleviate potential nighttime boating confusion at those junctions. The larger channels use red, even-numbered triangle signs on the right (as you travel upstream) and

green, odd-numbered squares on the left (downstream). Savvy boaters use the phrase “red on right, returning” — which refers not to heading back where you started from, but rather returning upriver toward the channel’s headwaters or source — as a constant reminder of where each color should be kept with respect to their vessels. In most cases, the channel markers alternate from one side of the channel to the other, and the numbers are sequential. Markers R50 and R50A were recently swapped to make them properly sequenced, but there are still exceptions. Some markers, such as R10 and R44, R46 and R48, aren’t essential to sight lines so they don’t exist. On the Blackwater River arm of the lake, the midriver section (upriver from the junction with Gills Creek) has several out of sequence pairs. Boaters will encounter B20 before B19; B22 is before B21A (the A markers were added at locations where augmenting the original sequence is particularly helpful to boaters); B24 is before B23 and B26 is before B25. Those anomalies are coincidental and do not violate U.S. Coast Guard regulations, Shepelwich said. In 2007, the channel markers in heavy traffic areas of the lake were supplemented by “Caution Congested Area” signs. This TLAC initiative, aided by

Repair of damaged signs or malfunctioning lights happens fastest when boaters or homeowners with markers in their lake views help by reporting outages immediately. Details are below.

In many instances, Appalachian and TLAc rely on boaters and residents to alert them when there’s a problem. Through its Adopt-a-Light and Adopt-aBuoy programs, TLAc asks for adopters to monitor and report when a marker is not lighted or becomes damaged. “It’s so much appreciated,” TLAc’s Jeanne Harvey said of the volunteers who participate. “we want the lake to stay safe especially at night.” Over the next three years, Harvey said TLAC is planning to replace the 37 aging rock and shoal markers that her organization is responsible for (Appalachian oversees the other 26 rock and shoal markers, according to TLAc). “I think overall the lake is in pretty good condition as far as markers go,” Harvey added.

of warm-up movements and stretches, including turning their heads to look over their shoulders and flexing the spine and back muscles into what’s called a cat/cow stretch. “Ancient yogis used to say, ‘We are as young as our spine,’” Wynne told her students during a recent class. “The discs of our spine don’t get a lot of circulation on their own. That’s why yoga is so effective — we’re always moving those parts of our spine.” Ageless Yogis is one of 16 classes offered each week at the studio, and Wynne is one of six instructors. Huddleston resident Bonnie Kahn has been taking classes at The Centre at VitaZen for about five years and attends class five times a week. “I actually mix it up,” Kahn said. “All the teachers are good, but they’re all different. It’s a good mixture and each week, I try to go to different classes.” Kahn has seen the positive effects practicing yoga regularly has had on her overall physical health. “I hold my breath a lot, I found,” she said. “I thought yoga would help me breathe better, and I’ve found myself breathing the proper way.” Bobbi Winzeler of Moneta first got into yoga in the late 1980s when she purchased an instructional tape by Ali McGraw. “That was my yoga introduction,” she said. “My practice wasn’t really regular until about 2006 or 2007 when I was living in Costa Rica.”

In 2013 Winzeler earned her 200-hour certification needed to become an instructor and about a year ago, she began teaching classes at The Centre at VitaZen. Winzeler teaches Hatha yoga classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and rotates teaching on weekends. While the Hatha yoga class is designed for beginners, Winzeler said it also can be beneficial to anyone interested in getting stronger. “We don’t do the super-complicated poses,” she said. “I will do simple poses, but we might stay in them for a while.” Like Wynne, Winzeler has also heard the excuses for not doing yoga, such as being judged or watched while practicing. “It’s not a competition,” Winzeler said. “Everybody’s practice is their own practice, and every day is different.” Wynne concurred. “Yoga is what you make it. It’s very individualized.” In addition to the regular classes, the studio offers private lessons, a 200-hour class for aspiring yoga instructors and workshops for participants who want a deeper understanding of the practice. There’s also a yoga basics workshop that Wynne teaches, which is ideal for newcomers or for those who want a refresher. “It’s a three-hour workshop on the very basics of yoga and why you want to do it,” Wynne said.

ABOVE RIGHT. Richard Rudolph, the bands’ director, who also goes by the nickname Pandaddy, plays a standard drum kit to set the tempo and give signals to the steel drum players. ABOVE LEFT. Not only is the music happy, the people are, too. Clay Johnston, a member of the Parrot Pan Band, gets into the spirit of performing. TOP. Jan Sommers is one of several players who play in all three bands — Island Pan, Toucan Pan and Parrot Pan.

f you’re near the boat docks on the lower level of Bridgewater Plaza — the stretch from Mango’s Bar & Grill toward Bridgewater Pointe condominiums — any Monday evening, you’re likely to hear the happy, island sounds of steel drum bands practicing for upcoming performances. Not only is the music happy, the people are, too. Some players wave their arms around rhythmically and dance during measures of musical rest; someone might shoot bubbles from a bubble gun; the entire baritone section might be sporting hot pink T-shirts or Panama hats; and cupcakes or other refreshments usually adorn the Tiki bar. The practice hall, dubbed the Panyard, is alive with cheerfulness. Yes, the band members play music, but they also have a blast! “I’ve always wanted to have a band like this,” said director Richard Rudolph, whose nickname is Pandaddy. Rudolph is a music teacher with a career that spans 43 years. “I’ve taught steel drum groups in Roanoke and Blacksburg for 24 years and still provide instruction at nine area schools. I’ve entered the big competitions and I’m through with that. This is fun. I’m having a ball!” Band members agree with Rudolph’s assessment. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Band members form a chain to off-load drums, also called pans, back into the Panyard, the groups’ practice location, which is located on the lower level of Bridgewater Plaza.

“Oh, I love it!” said Mary Thurmond, who recently joined Island Pan, the newest of the steel drum bands (other steel drum groups include the Parrot Pan and Toucan Pan bands). “When I come to practice, it’s an uplifting experience.” Walt and Judy Dunbar are one of 12 couples who have joined the bands together. “Walt has always been the musician,” Judy said. “This is the first time I’ve ever done something musical with him. It’s wonderful.” Steel drumming is for both mental and physical health. “You’re learning a new activity, and your brain has to coordinate your thoughts of hitting the right notes with your muscles that are doing the work,” Rudolph said. “So it keeps you sharp.”

What are steel drums?

One of the most recently invented instruments, and the only non-electric instrument invented in the 20th century, the steel drum is a hammered 55-gallon oil drum (or section thereof) tuned to produce exact tones, according to Wikipedia. A steel drum is more correctly called a “steel pan” or, simply, a “pan” since the sound comes from the vibration of the whole instrument when struck by rubber-tipped sticks. “Drum” actually refers to the oil drum containers from which the pans are made. Conversely, an actual “drum,” the instrument or

group of them one sees in an orchestra or band, produces a sound by the vibration of a stretched membrane when struck by sticks or hands. Pan playing originated in Trinidad, a small island off the coast of Venezuela, during World War II, the website said. Musician Ellie Mannette, who earned the title of the “father of the modern steel drum,” created an instrument from one end of a discarded 55-gallon oil barrel. In the beginning, each player used only a single pan, held at chest level by a string around the neck. Pans have since evolved into instruments of varying sizes, crafted to produce a wide range of musical notes from soprano to bass. The SML bands use various quantities of seven different instruments: one-pan leads (soprano), two-pan double tenors (mezzo-soprano), two-pan double seconds (alto), two-pan and three-pan guitars (baritone), fourpan tenor bass and six-pan basses. In addition, the director plays a standard drum kit to set the tempo and give signals to the players. Playing steel drums becomes easier when players memorize the location of all the notes, then it’s just a matter of striking the notes in the proper order and timing while looking at the music. But this music does not require finesse; anybody can do it, even visiting grandchildren have been encouraged to have a go at making music on steel drums.

Beware of pirates!

In Trinidad, competition among steel drum bands is so fierce that band members spy on other bands to hear their songs and arrangements, Rudolph said. When an intruder is spotted, a player will yell “Pirate!” so others will know to stop playing. At the SML Panyard, any non-member, whether it’s a curious onlooker, a grandchild or a friend, will

be greeted with the cry of “Pirate!” But this band won’t stop playing. Onlookers are always welcome to drop in on practices.

Helping area nonprofits For several years, SML’s steel drum bands have performed to raise money for lake-area charities. The next fund-raiser will be June 18 at 3 p.m. to benefit SML Good Neighbors Inc. at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center in Wirtz.

For several years, the steel drum bands have organized performances to raise funds for lakearea charities, including Carnivale benefitting the SML branch of the Franklin County Family YMCA, a concert at Harvester Performance Center to raise money for the SML Lions Club’s college scholarships, and an event at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center to benefit SML Good Neighbors Inc. (this year’s concert is June 18). All told, the bands have raised more than $50,000 for these nonprofits. “Steel drums excite me and so do the people playing them,” said Jim Wood, a three-pan guitar player. “We are the most diverse group imaginable.” Indeed, there are former teachers, a radio broadcaster, a nuclear scientist, a CIA spook, a minister, moms, entrepreneurs, retirees and working people, who find playing drums is a great release from the pressures of life. “This is so much fun that when I leave practice, I feel great,” one player remarked recently. “It’s better than church!”

How did a steel drum program begin at tHe lake? Four years ago, a couple of lakers visited a practice session of the Panamania steel drum band at Quest Music Academy in Roanoke, which is owned by music director Richard Rudolph. They noticed that participants ranged from middle schoolers to senior citizens. After hearing the band, these lakers urged Smith Mountain Arts Council to book the group for a summer event at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center. At that concert, Rudolph announced he was offering a free hourlong tryout session the following week. By the end of that session, participants could play a song! It was a lot of fun, and no one even had to be able to read music. That was the beginning of the Parrot Pan Band. A year later, the Toucan Pan Band was formed — again drawing from concertgoers who decided they wanted to share in the fun. Most recently, the Island Pan Band was created.

f you’re looking for a fun, family-friendly escape that involves music and dancing, set your GPS southwest to the hamlet of Floyd. That’s where you’ll find The Floyd Country Store. Mind you, this isn’t just any country store where root beer and penny candy reign supreme — this iconic landmark is world-renowned for its music, especially the Friday Night Jamboree. “The Friday Night Jamboree is a spectacle,” said Dylan Locke, who has owned the venue with his wife, Heather Krantz, since 2014. “Hundreds and hundreds of people are here every Friday night. They’re from all over the world.”

The Floyd Country Store is world-renowned for its music, especially the Friday Night Jamboree.

Located on Virginia 8 in the heart of Floyd, The Floyd Country Store is one of nine major venues along The Crooked Road, Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail. The 300-plus mile driving trail, which winds through the mountains of Southwest Virginia, highlights the heritage of the region’s traditional music, including bluegrass, old-time and traditional country music, according to its website. Built around 1909, the store was once an actual store with an adjoining building that housed a feed and seed store, according to a November 2014 article in The Roanoke Times. Since that time, the building hasn’t lost its country charm. From what looks to be the original wooden floors to the white tin coffered ceiling, entering through the front door is like taking a step back in time. In 2005, Woody and Jackie Crenshaw purchased the store and spent two years renovating it. “They’re the ones that rescued it,” Locke said. When the Crenshaws decided to sell, they approached Locke and Krantz. “In order to really complete the circle, we felt that we had to find the right next generation, the next owner,” Woody Crenshaw said in the 2014 article. “We probably could have come out of this better if we had put it on the open market, but we recruited Dylan and Heather because we felt like they were the right people.” Locke, too, recently recalled when the Crenshaws first approached him and Krantz about buying the store. “Our first thought was ‘that’s crazy,’” he said. But after talking with family and friends, Locke said the couple had a change of heart. “Everyone was like, ‘you’d be stupid not to do this,’ and gave us the confidence we needed to say ‘yes.’”

Since taking over the venue, the staff has grown from 13 to nearly 30 employees. In addition to the Friday Night Jamboree, other regularly scheduled events include Saturday afternoon Americana music, Saturday night dances and Sunday afternoon jam sessions. “It’s acoustic-inspired music. It might be blues, it might be jazz, or it could be all kinds of stuff inbetween,” Locke said of Americana Afternoons, which are Saturdays from noon to 3 p.m. “It’s definitely less crowded than Friday.” Old-time music is played from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. every Sunday followed by bluegrass from 4 to 6 p.m. On a recent Sunday afternoon as rain poured down outside, the mood was sunny and cheerful inside as two dozen musicians sat in a circle playing old-time music. Dancers of all ages took turns flatfooting and two-stepping inside the ring while audience clapped along to the beat. On the first Saturday of each month, the Floyd Radio Show podcast, which has 40,000 listeners worldwide, is recorded at the store in front of an audience, Locke said. Modeled after those old-timey variety shows, the show features guest artists who

For those who might be interested in learning more about the music, there is The Handmade Music School, which periodically holds music and dance workshops and classes as well as private lessons for guitar, fiddle, banjo and dobro. oodturner Don Riggs scoffs at being called an artist. But in the Wirtz home that the 81-year-old shares with Pat, his wife of 56 years, there are dozens upon dozens of sculpted wooden pieces — tiny boxes with lids, perfectly oval eggs and delicate goblets — that beg to differ. “It’s a good hobby,” said Riggs. “It keeps me out of trouble.” Riggs began woodturning in the 1980s while he was still in the Navy. His impressive 32-year career in the Navy involved a lot of time in the air — he flew 23 different airplanes and made 965 carrier landings, 296 of them at night. A Vietnam veteran, Riggs flew 97 combat missions as an F4 Phantom pilot. “God gave me the talent to fly,” he said. Before he retired from the Navy, Riggs was a deputy of the organization responsible for placing officer and enlisted personnel. “Those last five years in the Navy were very hectic,” he recalled. Needing to relieve stress, Riggs discovered the world of woodturning. He bought a lathe from Sears and began to tinker. “I could get on that lathe and all my problems

went away,” Riggs recalled. “[But] I didn’t really know what I was doing.” In search of expertise, Riggs joined the Capital Area Woodturners group near his Northern Virginia home, which eventually led him to teach night classes on woodturning for Fairfax County Public Schools. By this time, Riggs had gained a reputation in the woodturning community and was invited to perform a demonstration for the SML Woodturners. After their second trip to the lake, the couple decided to make their move. “Pat said, ‘I really like it down here,’” Riggs recalled. That was a little more than 10 years ago. Since then, Riggs has become a member of the SML Woodturners and Blue Ridge Woodturners in Roanoke in addition to being a life member of the group in Northern Virginia. “He knows almost everyone in woodturning,” said John Allen, president of the SML Woodturners. A love of trying new techniques or making new pieces is what keeps Riggs interested in the trade. “There are very few days of the year that I don’t turn that lathe on,” he said. Perhaps that can-do attitude can be attributed to SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

As a former teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools, Don Riggs accumulated numerous tools and other items used in woodturning. a philosophy that riggs learned at an early age and used often as a commanding officer while serving in the Navy: “There are only two can’ts: [If] you can’t do it, we can’t use you.” In his workshop, which is adjacent to his home, Riggs’ passion for woodturning is evident. Stacks of wood are tucked into every nook and cranny. Drawers brim with woodturning instruments. Wooden creations are stacked on countertops in various stages of completion. “I start a lot of projects,” Riggs said with a laugh. “I get bored then go on to something else.”

artist pRofile For inspiration, Riggs regularly scans websites, such as World of Woodturning and Wood Central. While his wood of preference is cherry because of the richness of the grain, Riggs regularly works with wood of all types, including maple, walnut and even white ash that was planted by George Washington at Mount Vernon in 1785. As a member of SML Woodturners, Riggs and fellow members regularly display their wares at Westlake Library. Currently, he is making dozens of Christmas ornaments to give away. “I give all my stuff away,” he said. “I don’t sell any of it.” Ever the mentor and teacher, Riggs enjoys sharing his love of the craft whether it’s during skill enhancement workshops hosted by the SML Woodturners or events, such as Southwest Antique Farm Days. “I get a lot of joy out of it,” Riggs said. “It’s a good way to meet people.” While Riggs remains humble about his

woodturning abilities, Allen acknowledged that his friend and fellow club member has a gift for the craft as well as for being a natural leader. “We don’t do anything without running it by Don first,” he said. “He’s done everything; he’s one of the anchors of the club.”

Needing to relieve stress, Riggs discovered the world of woodturning. He bought a lathe from Sears and began to tinker.

arlier this spring, David and Carla Keith took advantage of warm, sunny weather and spent the day fishing at Smith Mountain Lake. The Keiths, who live in Fincastle, frequently take advantage of the lake’s recreational amenities. After mooring his boat and helping his wife onto the courtesy pier at the Scruggs public boat facility, David Keith headed to the parking lot to retrieve the couple’s truck and trailer. The Scruggs location — one of six at the lake owned by Appalachian Power and managed by Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries — was renovated two years ago. Included in the $350,000 makeover of the 9.9-acre site was a repositioned, paved boat ramp, a courtesy pier for loading and unloading of boat passengers, an expanded parking area, updated restrooms and a new fishing pier. “This thing has really improved a lot,” David Keith said. It’s one of several sites that Appalachian has upgraded in the past few years as part of its commitment to ensure that the public has continued access to the lake and its recreational amenities. “This part of our responsibility at operating and managing this hydroelectric project is one of the most important jobs we do here,” said John

The Scruggs Public Boat Access Facility was renovated two years ago. A new fishing pier, a courtesy pier for loading and unloading of passengers, restrooms, a repositioned, paved boat ramp and an expanded parking area were all included in the makeover.

Upgrades to the 7.6-acre Hardy Ford site in Bedford County are expected to begin later this year, Shepelwich said. Out of all the sites, Oak Grove and Penhook, which are in Franklin County, as well as Hales Ford in Bedford County, are used most frequently, Shepelwich said. “The new ramp at Oak Grove is used quite a bit,” said Sgt. Karl Martin of DGIF. In addition to their on-water patrols, Martin said conservation officers with DGIF regularly patrol the public boat sites. The sites are typically busiest during warmer summer months, Martin said, which is also when many anglers opt to hit the water after dark when there’s less boat traffic and the fish are known to bite.

Shepelwich, an Appalachian spokesman. “We want to make sure that everyone — those who live here and those who travel from other places — can enjoy these beautiful lakes easily and safely.” Just off Merriman Way Road near Westlake Corner, the 10-acre Oak Grove facility underwent a $1.3 million makeover in 2014 with upgrades that included a two-lane boat ramp, two courtesy docks, a fishing pier, handicap-accessible restrooms and two paved, lighted parking lots. Last year, Appalachian upgraded its Penhook and Anthony Ford facilities at a cost of $400,000. New restrooms, paved parking areas and erosion control and landscaping were included in those renovations. Similar to the Oak Grove and Scruggs sites, a fishing pier also was built at the Penhook facility.

“Nighttime activity increases tremendously,” he said. For those who don’t own a boat or want to rent one, other recreational opportunities are available along the shoreline. Two public parks — the 1,250-acre Smith Mountain Lake State Park in the Huddleston community of Bedford County and the 37-acre Smith Mountain Lake Community Park in the Scruggs area of Franklin County — are situated directly across the lake from each other. Both have fishing piers as well as beaches, walking trails, playgrounds and public restrooms. Smith Mountain Lake State Park, which opened in 1983, also has camping facilities and a public boat ramp available.

“They are a big plus for people who are visiting,” Martin said. “They can go to a safe area to swim or fish.” On a recent Friday afternoon, Brian Healey brought his son, Zachary, and his godson, Brian McCarthy, to Smith Mountain Lake Community Park to fish. The Moneta resident said he visits the park regularly because it’s so close to home. Just a few feet away, Bob Jones and his sons, Zach, 18, and Ryan, 13, were casting their own fishing rods. The New Jersey residents, who were at the lake visiting family, had been to the park before on previous trips, but were happy, this time, to have discovered the fishing pier. “This is great,” Jones said. “You can spread out here.”

Kristi Krantz is a perfect example. Nearly three years ago, the single mom and her now 17-year-old son were looking to stay in the area after Krantz’s divorce. Through Craigslist, she found a townhome in Mayberry Villas. “This was just the ideal place,” she said, citing the short driving distances to friends and family, stores and restaurants as well as Staunton River High School where son Dakota is a junior and plays football. With 2,400 square feet, the townhome offers Krantz ample space. The three-level unit boasts a

High-end finishes include crown molding, hardwood floors on the main level, wall-towall carpeting on the upper level, stainless steel appliances, a washer and dryer, a microwave and a garbage disposal. A patio off the kitchen is ideal for enjoying warm weather and, Krantz added, comes in handy when there are special events happening across the street at Downtown Moneta. “It’s nice here when they have the July 4th fireworks and different festivals,” Krantz said. “I can sit on my back porch and watch it.” Not only that, but Krantz said that she also likes not having to cut grass or shovel snow. “There’s a reserve so that the outside is taken care of as well as through the property owners’ association,” Lyons said.

Krantz’s townhome is one of 26 in Mayberry Hills. While similar in size, other floor plans include three bedrooms and front porches. Townhome rental prices start at $950 a month, Lyons said. For renters who are looking for something smaller, apartments at Downtown Moneta might fit the bill. There are studio efficiencies and one-, two- and three-bedroom units starting at $575 a month. Developed by businessman George Aznavorian in 2007, both Mayberry and Downtown Moneta are on land that is ripe for growth and includes public water and a state-of-the-art sewage treatment system. “Because we have public utilities here, we could make it happen,” Lyons said. In what had been a planned community of about 80 homes, Mayberry now has about 300 with more planned for the future. More apartments are planned at Downtown Moneta as well, Lyons said.

LEFT. High-end finishes include granite countertops, custom-built cabinets and new appliances. BELOW. In what had been a planned community of about 80 homes, Mayberry now has about 300 with more planned in the future. Downtown Moneta has plans to add more apartments as well, according to Jody Lyons of Lyons Team Realtors.

And given the demand, that’s probably a good thing. “Everything we have is full right now,” Lyons said. When Krantz began looking at places to rent, her Mayberry Hills townhome was the first one she saw, and she knew then it was too good to pass up. “I thought that thing is going to go in no time,” she said. She signed the rental agreement that day. “I didn’t want to take any chances.” While the conveniences are a definite plus, Krantz said she also likes the sense of community that comes with living in a community like Mayberry. “You kind of feel a bit more secure,” she said.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a trio of recent thefts from businesses near Westlake Corner. The first theft occurred sometime during the evening of March 24 when a patio set was stolen from True Organics on Scruggs Road, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office. Maj. Mike Bowman said employees noticed the furniture

was missing when they arrived for work the following day. Outdoor wicker furniture was reported stolen March 27 from David James Homes’ model in LakeWatch Plantation near the Franklin County Family YMCA. The General Store on Scruggs Road also reported two outdoor chairs and a picnic table were stolen March 29. Rita Grisetti, co-owner of The General Store, said she never expected something like that would ever happen. “We have never had any problems.” Grisetti said that she once acci-

dentally left store items on display outside overnight, but when she returned the following morning, the items were still there. “Now we are paranoid,” Grisetti said, adding that she will no longer be as trusting. The two chairs taken from The General Store had been secured by a cable that was cut. Grisetti said the 10-foot picnic table would have needed a lot of strength to lift, as well as a large truck or trailer to haul it off. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office reported it has no leads at this time. Investigators are look-

ing at surveillance video from area businesses as well as checking with area pawn shops and websites to see if there has been any effort to resell the items, said Capt. Paul Caldwell. The sheriff’s office asks that business owners and residents consider moving their lawn furniture indoors or to a place where it can be monitored by security cameras or alarms to prevent future thefts. Anyone with information is asked to contact Caldwell at 352-5174 or paul. caldwell@franklincountyva.gov.

Josh Gilbert of Roanoke, winner of the 5K, crosses a stream along the trail.

Dozens of runners braved the steep slopes and trails around the Smith Mountain Dam for the Dam 50K and 5K on April 1. This is the second year for the event that added a new challenge for the 5K runners. This year both the 50K and the 5K participants faced a 1,300-foot climb during one section of the course. Known as the “death climb” by runners, it was added to make the 5K one of the most difficult around, according to race organizer Lauren Acker. “The death climb is a big part of the 50K race,” Acker said. “We decided to make it part of the 5K so it would be the hardest 5K ever.” While the area had experienced heavy rain over the past few days, runners experienced good weather for race day. The course was mostly dry by the start of the

race. “The weather was beautiful,” Acker said. The top finisher in the 5K was Josh Gilbert of Roanoke with a time of 31:48. He admitted that the 1,300-foot climb was difficult. “I don’t know if there is a harder 5K anywhere around here,” Gilbert said. Erica Martin of Moneta was the top female finisher in the 5K with a time of 1:02:35. Stephen Mohr of Arlington, Virginia was the top finisher in the 50K with a time of 4:25:32. He placed fourth in last year’s 50K at the dam. Lindsay DiMarco of Durham, North Carolina was the top female finisher in the 50K with a time of 5:52:55.

isters Brenda Rowell and Jane McCoy were on vacation with their husbands in Key West, Florida several years ago when the idea to write a book hit them. The couples had rented a house in a retirement/vacation rental community. “One afternoon we were enjoying the pool, and as I looked around at the seniors gathered there, it was obvious they were having a ball!” McCoy said. “I mentioned this to Brenda, and she said she bet a book could be written with all their stories.” Nine months later, “Rainbow’s End” was born under the penname JB Bonds. The “J” is for Jane McCoy, the “B” is for Brenda Rowell, and Bonds is the sisters’ maiden name. “We’d never written a book in our life,” Rowell recalled. “It just flowed out of us.” The story centers around two widows in their 70s, Joanie and Roz, as well as the shenanigans of their friends and neighbors, who live in the fictitious Florida community of Pelican Key. “It’s just a Southern humor kind of book with a few mysteries thrown in,” Rowell said. Characters include Burton Munroe, a cross-dressing, former Broadway performer, octogenarians and recent newlyweds Lois and Morty who live in a trailer full of cats, and Blossom Aquarius, an ex-hippy from California.

“She was a nudist who was famous back in the ‘60s,” Rowell said. “She’s taken a love to bright, flamboyant clothing, so she and Burton get along really well.” Since its release, reviews have been favorable. “’Rainbow’s End’ is a delightfully entertaining book that kept me laughing, smiling and turning the pages until the wee hours of the morning,” wrote one reviewer, Cynthia Colburn, on Amazon.com. “I just could not put it down as I had to know what would happen next.” Now the sisters are continuing the story line in a sequel, “Pelican Key,” which is due out later this year. “Many of the characters are the same with a few new neighbors added in,” McCoy said. McCoy, 69, lives with husband Jim in Lexington, while Rowell, 67, lives with husband Chuck at Smith Mountain Lake. Both grew up in Roanoke and have remained close. “We are still just very best friends,” Rowell said. “We talk or text each other every day.” Because of the distance between them, the work the sisters do on the book is mostly via electronic communications. “We do this all online,” Rowell said. “We type up story lines and we send it back and forth through email.” Once the first draft of “Pelican Key” was finished, Rowell said the couples had to head back to Key West for a bit more … inspiration. “We just loved it when we went,” she said. And while the book is a work of fiction, there’s a lesson in it for everyone. “Life does not stop when you become a senior,” McCoy said. “In fact, life can ramp up a notch or two.” “Rainbow’s End” by JB Bonds is available for $13.50 on Amazon.com (an e-book version is available for $2.99). Locally, books are at Southern Roots (McCoy and Rowell are hosting a book signing June 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Westlake Library near Westlake Corner and at Gifts Ahoy at Bridgewater Plaza. — Karen Dillon, Editor

Southern Roots SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, VIRGINIA

Secret Lives of the Tsars By Michael Farquhar Who says history has to be boring? Michael Farquhar has enlivened the topic over the years with books such as “A Treasury of Great American Scandals: Tantalizing True Tales of Historic Misbehavior by the Founding Fathers and Others Who Let Freedom Swing” and “A Treasury of Royal Scandals: The Shocking True Stories History’s Wickedest, Weirdest, Most Wanton Kings, Queens, Tsars, Popes, and Emperors.” His latest is “Secret Lives of the Tsars: Three Centuries of Autocracy, Debauchery, Betrayal, Murder, and Madness from Romanov Russia.” Farquhar proves the subtitle apt as he examines Russian monarchs from the first teen Romanov in 1613 to the ill-fated Nicholas II and his family in the 20th century. He discusses the country’s politics and culture during each reign, but focuses more on the tsars and tsarinas as people — most of them moody, outrageous, cruel and upset with their parents. There are plenty of primary sources from which Farquhar draws examples. On a trip to England, neighbors at his host’s home watched as the drunk king was “pushed along in a wheelbarrow — a then-unknown contraption in Russia — right into the estate’s carefully cultivated hedges.” A hundred or so years later, Fyodor Dostoevsky would recall his near execution at the hands of Nicholas I. Although Farquhar’s writing lacks the humor of some of his previous books — the enthralling “Treasury of Royal Scandals” is laugh-out-loud funny — this newest one is no less interesting. The last three chapters of the book are somber and poignant as the Romanovs move closer to their brutal end. The dynasty is fertile ground for a historian, and it’s to Farquhar’s credit he lets events and contemporary commentary tell the stories themselves. — Suzanne Wardle, Roanoke

Your local expert Insurance can be complicated. As your local independent agent, we’ll find you the right coverage at the right price.

By Joby Warrick The Pulitzer-prize winning book Black Flags tells of the rise of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and ISIS or ISIL (the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, which he founded), the effort to hunt down Zarqawi, and the continuation of the organization after Zarqawi was killed. The author, a reporter for the Washington Post, draws on a variety of sources, including apparently U.S. and foreign intelligence communities, in painting a fascinating picture of Zarqawi’s rise in jails in Jordan, his release, his contact with al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, his leadership of ISIS, his death via an air strike, and the follow-on leadership of ISIS. Anyone wanting to learn more about one of the primary threats to the security interests of the U.S., our Allies, and friends would do well to start by reading Black Flags. — James W. d O c K tale HOUR

Laundry piles up in cascading mounds on the cement basement floor in front of the washing machine. Flower beds along the side of the house are being consumed by wild strawberry weed. Unopened bills are strewn haphazardly across the top of the desk, intermixed with Sunday paper ads and coupons, a Chico’s catalog, and a yellow notepad filled with to-do reminders and honey-dos. As one peers across the cluttered landscape that reaches a grand crescendo of overwhelming complexity each weekend, it becomes crystal clear there is but one way out of this quagmire. Road trip! The road trip is an age-old technique for escaping in short measure the mundane, the overwhelming and the I-just-don’t-wanna-do-that. Yes, you’re delaying the inevitable. Perhaps it’s a bit childish to run away from life’s duties and expectations. But one must also maintain one’s sanity, and in order to do so there are times when ya just gotta proclaim “I am outta here!” and hit the road. Road trips have been portrayed fondly in cinema for eons. You may be of an age to recall the classic on-the-road film series of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby. These two icons of cinematic buddydom starred in seven films that included road trips to Singapore, Zanzibar, Morocco, Utopia,

Rio, Bali and Hong Kong. If you haven’t settled in on a rainy weekend to enjoy a marathon of watching these two travel the world together, you’re missing out on the brilliant comedic timing of two national treasures. Don’t miss out on other road trip classics that include “Thelma and Louise,” “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and, one of my all-time personal favorites, “Smoky and the Bandit.” One of my earliest and fondest childhood memories of coming up in Florida are the road trips taken with my dear Grumps. Many a Sunday afternoon, after church and our weekly family meal ritual, my granddaddy, my little brother Scotty and me would pile into Grumps’ beat-up — yet beloved — yellow Chevy Vega and head out for a drive along the beachside highway. As we traveled the winding miles of A1A along the Florida coastline, we would roll down the car windows (there was a crank handle to roll down the car window back then) and let the salty sea air blow into the car. When I close my eyes now I can still remember the feel of warm ocean breezes blowing on my face. I realize as an adult that the likely motivation for these quick excursions was to give my poor mama a bit of a break from her two heathens, but I also like to believe that these little escapes were as fun for my Grumps as they were for me and my little bro. When your days become filled with all the must-do tasks that can make up and overwhelm your daily lives, I give you permission — if you need it — to take a much-needed time-out for a road trip adventure. Please give me a little wave as you pass on by. Kimberly Dalferes is the author of “I Was In Love With a Short Man Once” and “Magic Fishing Panties.” Her humor blog, “The Middle-Aged Cheap Seats,” is online at kimdalferes.com.
