daniel carter LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ I’ve always loved cooking and started at College on the Quick Service course to get my skills up to scratch. This gave me lots of confidence and I’m now on the Professional Cookery course, spending a day a week cooking in La Rue and another front of house. My dad is really proud of my progress and certainly enjoys the fruits of my labour — I’m now the main cook in my house and keep my family well fed! Eventually, I would love to open my own restaurant in Windermere specialising in classic English dishes. The College has really assisted me in making sure I can achieve my goals. As I live out in the country, the transport service is quite poor, so the College arranges and pays for a taxi to take me to the nearest bus stop. All my travel is free too, which really makes a difference. As I have a condition called NF1, which means I struggle with reading sometimes, the College has assigned me a support worker. This has been a great help and really improves my confidence in dealing with this aspect of the work.”

megan murdock LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ I’ve always been into sport, so it made sense to study it at College. Football has always been my passion, ever since being scouted at 12 for Women’s Premier League side Sunderland Ladies. After a few years I made the decision to focus on my studies, but would still love to play for England one day! The course really suits me as there is a real team atmosphere and you are treated like an adult. The tutors certainly know how to get the best out of you. If you have an open mind to new experiences and are willing to learn, this would be a great course for you. Only a few of my friends from school came to the College, so it was a bit intimidating for the first few days, but then I made friends in no time.”

Cameron Mckenzie LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ Most of my friends stayed on at 6th form, but I knew it wasn’t for me. Two of my cousins are both joiners, one moving to Australia with his trade, which was something that really appealed to me. Despite not knowing many people when I first came, with over 60 students on the course, it wasn’t long until I made friends. I recently won an outstanding achievement award at the last college awards ceremony, which has given my confidence a real boost, as my tutors nominated me, so I know I must be doing something right! At the moment I am actually looking for a job. But the great thing about a lot of courses you start here is if you do find work, you can easily transfer on to an apprenticeship and train on the job. I’ve always enjoyed woodwork, but to me joinery is a combination of skills. You use maths (lots of it!), plenty of problem solving and then there’s the practical side of things.”

rachel foster LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ I’m currently studying Level 3 NVQ in Beauty Therapy, with the plan of then going to university to study for a Foundation degree in Salon Management. I always wanted to go to university and originally started off doing A levels, but dropped out during the first year. In retrospect, this proved to be the best move, as I needed the practical experience to eventually run my own salon. The College salon has enabled me to work in a live environment. It has been great experience and has allowed me to better understand beauty therapy. It’s not widely known that you have to have a good knowledge of physiology to perform many of the treatments. It’s not just about the application of a nail, it’s about understanding the physical aspect of the nail beds and nerves that make up the finger, so you know how to carry out a treatment effectively. This is where work in the salon has helped me. Physiology is not an easy subject to understand, but I learn better doing and now I am really proud that I have managed to get to grips with the theory behind beauty.” To apply call 01946 839 300 Email info@lakescollege.ac.uk or go to www.lakescollege.ac.uk

naomi harrison LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ Initially, I took a fairly traditional educational route — studying A levels and then going on to art college. But my real career passion was to become a mechanic. It wasn’t an option at the time as I suffered from ME, so I had to avoid anything physical. Besides, school hardly encouraged me, viewing it as a subject ‘highly unsuitable for a girl.’ My life moved on and after spending time in Spain as a teacher, and having my son Jasper, who’s now seven, I returned home to start my own dressmaking business. Then I thought pursue your dream, so I looked into how to become a mechanic. It was really important for me as a single mother to be self-sufficient, with a reliable career that was totally transferable, wherever I wanted to live. The tutors have backed me all the way. If I need some flexibility to drop Jasper at school in the morning, they completely understand that I may be a little late. That helps me a lot.”

emran miah LIFE CHANGING LAKES COLLEGE “ I was really lucky to get on this course. It has allowed me to specialise purely in IT, instead of studying unrelated subjects as A levels. I can honestly say that last year was the best year of my life. Not just meeting new people, but the general atmosphere set by the tutors and the college staff. Plus, the benefit of being able to have access to great resources. I’ve really thrown myself in to College life, manning the radio station and being a college rep. I think it’s one of the best ways to experience College. Priding myself as a bit of an entrepreneur, I’ve always been up for a challenge. Recently I was involved in raising funds and renovating a space to convert it into the first mosque for West Cumbria. Using a lot of the skills I’ve learnt in College, from research to promotion to IT, I’ve travelled the country and managed to raise nearly £200,000 to complete the project. It recently opened and services the local Muslim community.” To apply call 01946 839 300 Email info@lakescollege.ac.uk or go to www.lakescollege.ac.uk

In some schools, colleges or even universities you’re a small cog in a big machine. ‘Identical’ to every other student. Treated the same way. At Lakes, it couldn’t be more different. That’s because we know that individuals deserve to be treated as such. And we always, always understand that we’re here to make your life better — not the other way around. That spirit of support — of thinking about your needs — is apparent from the moment you arrive at College. Parking is never a problem, and buses literally drop you off at the front door. Inside, the campus is pretty compact, so you won’t spend your life wandering endless corridors. It’s about making college life easier. And, because we’re a modern college, we use the latest technology and equipment to bring your course to life — so that later on, you enjoy a head-start on the career ladder. Get on course for a job And because you’re unique, you deserve a unique education. That means courses built around the individual way you learn. And it means the courses that you want — more than 60 at the last count, and every one of them demanded by employers and students alike. You won’t just get the ‘best bits’ from one course, either, because you can choose to learn important job skills from different courses like IT or Accounts. That means flexibility — and a better job when you graduate.

Apprenticeships have become so popular that we can offer a huge number of nationally-recognised qualifications, which open doors into worthwhile jobs. If you can’t find an employer to apprentice with, we can help too. Just call Student Services on 01946 839 300 and ask to speak to an adviser, or pop in to your local JobCentre Plus.

Ashleigh Tunstall, 16, Health & Social Care “ I’ve always been career-minded. So, when I found out that I was pregnant just before starting college, I was determined not to let it hold me back from pursuing my aim of becoming a youth offender worker. The response from the college tutors was really supportive. They couldn’t do enough to ensure that I could combine having the baby, whilst continuing with my education. During my four months off, they really did bend over backwards to make sure I kept up with College work.

Get a complete education. Get an Advanced Diploma If you’re 16 to 18 and want a better way to learn high-level skills, a brand new Advanced Diploma could be perfect. In fact, they’re so brand new, you can still smell the box they came in. (It’s a bit like new trainers). Not your parents’ qualification Students used to prepare for their future the same way people buy CDs. You know how it goes — if you buy an album by your favourite group, as well as getting the two songs you really want, you get another ten tracks of filler. Up until now, qualifications have been just like that. Whatever you wanted to do, from aerospace engineer to business guru, you had to study loads of things at A level that you’d never use in your dream job.
63
All killer, no filler That’s where an Advanced Diploma is different. It’s like loading your MP3 player with nothing but the best music: you pick the stuff you really want. It’s the knowledge you need, for the future you’ve set your heart on. (And because we also teach first rate functional skills in English, Maths and ICT, you look really clever, too).
And here’s the technical bit… An Advanced Diploma is a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to three and a half A levels, and is worth 420 UCAS points.
You can learn inside and outside the classroom. And you learn exciting practical skills, not just the facts that get you on Mastermind. Things like teamwork and presentation abilities. Things employers love.
An Advanced Diploma recognises the ability to gain and apply a range of knowledge, skills and understanding. Learning at this Level involves detailed knowledge and skills.
At the end, you’ll have a better idea of what you want to do next. It could be more study at school or college, a job, university, or an Apprenticeship. But whatever future you pick, you’ll know it was designed for you. And to prove it, you’ll graduate with a detailed list of all the individual qualifications that make up your Advanced Diploma (well, you might as well boast about them). 5 things that make an Advanced Diploma special (and brilliant) 1. Tailor your learning, to suit you 2. Get robust English, Maths and ICT for a secure future 3. Develop functional personal, learning and thinking skills 4. See a job from the inside, with work experience 5. Do an exciting student project, and prove your new skills to the world
Advanced diplomas
It is for people who want to go to university, people working independently and, in some cases, people supervising and training others in their field of work.
Typically, it takes two years to study. You can pick subjects that you might want to study at university, like law, science, politics or a language. Or a course to do with a hobby: a creative subject, like music, dance or art. If you want to learn more about Advanced Diplomas, you’re not alone Talk to Student Services now, or visit http://yp.direct.gov.uk/diplomas

What makes an apprenticeship ideal? Your chance to earn and learn. Apprenticeships are a great way to get a formal qualification and valuable hands-on experience. Think of it as the best of both worlds. (We know we do.) Apprenticeships take one to two years. You work four days a week, and spend the fifth in College. If you’re already in work, talk to your employer about starting an apprenticeship. They’ll love the benefits they get from your new skills. Or, if you’re unemployed, we can help match you to your ‘ideal’ company. That means an employment contract and a training wage. A good deal by anyone’s standards. We think an apprenticeship will fit you perfectly. With so many to choose from, that’s not surprising. We’ve helped students complete over 400 apprenticeships since 2001. And our dedicated team of 35 delivery staff work with more than 250 local businesses. So, you’re never alone, and you’re always supported. (As if you need even more reasons to start an apprenticeship.)

We like to say that our department teaches you to mind your own business — or someone else’s, for that matter. That’s because we don’t just teach theories and facts. We teach a way of thinking — of understanding what makes a business ‘tick’. It’s a valuable skill, and it makes you a safe pair of hands for any organisation. If you study Business, you can choose from a wealth of careers. Our graduates go on to work in finance, HR, marketing, IT, management, and many other roles. And we support students through work experience and work placements. In the past, these have included stints at Allerdale
