IF MONEY IS TIGHT WE MIGHT BE ABLE TO HELP! Want to come to college and better yourself, but don’t think you can afford it? Then think again. Here’s just a few ways we can help with the financial side of things. Learner Support Fund (LSF) You may be entitled to extra financial help. This depends on your individual circumstances and household income. You will also need to be: • Aged 16 or over • Attending a course at Lakes College West Cumbria • Have been resident in the UK for the last three years, or are a british citizen living in the European Union. What are LSF funds? The Learner Support Fund is money Lakes College has available for students to help them access further education. The funds are there to help students attend college so the money can be used to help towards the costs of: Course fees for Full Time Courses: If you are over 19 and have a level 2 qualification, a full-time course will cost in the region of £300 unless you are on a means tested benefit (working tax credit, housing benefit, income support or income based job seekers allowance) then the full amount will be waived. Alternatively if your combined household income is lower than £19,630 (this threshold figure may alter so please check for current information with student services) then you need to pay £100 of the course fee and the LSF fund will pay the remaining £200. If you have not got a level 2 qualification then you do not pay anything towards your course fees but need to sign a declaration form (available from student services) to confirm this. (*A level 2 qualification can be any one of the following: 5 GCSE's at grade A-C, 5 O Level passes, 5 CSE Grade 1's, an NVQ 2, an intermediate GNVQ or a first diploma.) Course Fees for Part Time Courses: If you are over 19 and your combined household income is lower than £19,630 (this threshold figure may alter so please
check for current information with student services) then you need to pay 25% of the total cost and the LSF fund will pay the remaining 75%. Alternatively if you are on a means tested benefit (working tax credit, housing benefit, income support or income based job seekers allowance) then you need to pay 25% of the exam and registration fees and the LSF fund will pay the remaining 75% of the cost. Childcare If your combined household income is lower than £19,630 (this threshold figure may alter so please check for current information with student services) or you are in receipt of means tested benefits (working tax credit, housing benefit, income support or income based job seekers allowance) you may be eligible for childcare assistance from the LSF fund. We can pay up to £4 per hour depending on the funds available to a registered childminder or nursery. We can only pay for the days you attend college or are on placement during college term times. If possible we advise that you apply as soon as possible before starting your course. If you are a young parent aged under 20 there is also a 'Care to Learn' programme available to assist with the cost of childcare. Please contact student services for further information. If you are a higher education student studying a full-time course with dependant children in registered and approved childcare you may be eligible for a 'Childcare Grant' but you must contact your local LEA for more information. Travel to and from the course In student services our aim is to help as many students as we can to attend college. This may be through concessionary travel or bus passes for our full-time under 19 year old students. In addition to this, other students may be able to apply for help with the cost of public transport or a private vehicle. Cumbria County Council offer a bus pass to full-time students under 19 who live outside a 3 mile 'as the crow flies' radius from college. Application forms for a bus pass can be obtained from student services. Students who are not eligible for
GETTING TO LAKES
a bus pass can apply to student services for Concessionary Travel Assistance (you will be assessed on your income/parents income and/or receipt of any income based benefits). Stagecoach offer a College Rider bus pass to all students for £10 per week which gives you unlimited use of the Stagecoach buses from Ravenglass to Cockermouth School. Again, if you are on a low income or in receipt of income based benefit the College Rider will cost you only £5. The LSF fund can also help you with the costs of: • Uniform/Kit • Books • Day to day living expenses • Special equipment • Course Related Activities and Trips If you are experiencing particular financial difficulties, you could also apply to the hardship fund for help. An interview will have to be arranged to assess your needs. Please ask in student services for more information. How do I find out if I'm entitled to any financial help? To find out more about whether or not you are entitled to financial help, please contact student services. They will be able to assess your situation and help you complete any forms that are needed. Accommodation If you are looking for accommodation locally, we will try to help and can also put you in touch with other relevant organisations. Support If you have learning difficulties or health problems we will give you the support you need in the way you need it. Higher Education - How much does it cost? Please contact student services and they will send you a copy of our Higher Education Students Guide to Money.

MONEY NEWS
The number one priority of Lakes College is our students and making the courses we offer as accessible to as many people as possible. This is why we have initiated some schemes for September 2009 to help ease any financial worries that any potential students may have in this current climate. The Nuclear Decommissioning Agency is offering a bursary covering up to 50% of the course fees to any student wishing to study a part-time higher education course at the college. To be eligible for this scheme the course you want to study should be linked to the nuclear industry in some way and would currently cover any part-time level 4 (or over) in engineering, business, science or chemistry. However, if you could prove a link to the nuclear industry the request for a bursary would be considered. The college is also offering a bursary scheme to full-time higher education students, financed by the college and the University of Cumbria. Students can apply to the means-tested scheme for an annual payment of up to £1290. To be eligible for this scheme, the course you want to study needs to be a part time qualification at Level 4 or higher in Engineering, Business, Science or Chemistry.

degree noticeably increases participants’ confidence in everything they do and helps the individual to see the bigger picture within the factory environment.” Clear evidence that well structured training can have a significant, positive impact on business performance. Foundation Degree Forward found that employers who have trained their staff also noticed a positive change in the behaviours of their employees:
A SOUND INVESTMENT
Business training is generally regarded as a good thing but it isn’t always easy to quantify the benefits. If you are running a business then you want to know that you will get a return on your training investment in the same way that you would for a new piece of equipment.
Improving the skills of your workforce impacts on business performance in areas such as increased productivity, greater sales, reduced costs or improved margins. So let’s have a look at an example of how business training has had a direct impact on the bottom line of a manufacturing company. Young’s is the biggest seafood business in the UK with an
FREE TRAINING FOR EMPLOYEES THROUGH TRAIN TO GAIN Train to Gain is a government led programme that offers funded training to employees, providing them with the ability to study relevant courses with the ultimate goal of satisfying skills gaps in your organisation. There have been huge changes to the eligibility for Train to Gain and a lot of businesses are still not aware that most of their workforce will now be eligible for a completely FREE NVQ 2 qualification – regardless of their prior qualifications. In addition a number of your workforce may also qualify for free or subsidised NVQ 3 qualification. Lakes Workforce Development currently offers a variety of programmes at NVQ Level 2 and 3, listed below: NVQ programmes available • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

annual turnover in excess of £500M and employs around 4,700 people. Young’s Bluecrest Seafood played a key role in the design and delivery of a Foundation degree in Food Manufacturing Management, a part-time course aimed mainly at people already working in the industry. The results show:
• More team working • Improved report writing • A willingness to engage in wider aspects of the business • Better communication skills • Ability to speak confidently in team meetings • Offer well constructed solutions to problems • Management skills had improved • Employees are eager to learn
• Doubled output volumes in meals using production improvement techniques • £100,000 saved through improved production efficiencies • £50,000 saved by reductions in rejected production • 90% breakdown reduction through improved maintenance planning
So the right business training can have a measurable financial impact on your organisation and help to motivate and keep key staff. If you have a problem in your business that could be resolved by training then give our Lakes Workforce Development team a call on 01946 839307.
These are hard, quantifiable figures that show the real impact good training can deliver. As Wynne Griffiths, Young’s Chief Executive, commented: “The foundation
5 GOOD REASONS WHY APPRENTICES CAN MAKE THINGS HAPPEN IN YOUR BUSINESS: Competitive edge Example: Carillion differentiate their brand from competitors in the construction sector by training and placing more than 2000 apprentices with sub-contractors in their supply chain. They believe that this policy helped them win the London Paddington Walk development contract. Improved quality Example: BAE Systems found that apprentices are 50% less likely to make mistakes on a large-scale project, which could potentially save up to £100,000 in reworked activity. Employees who have completed apprenticeships helped to reduce production time by up to 25% compared to external recruits.
Higher productivity Example: BT estimates that their engineering apprentices are 7.5% more productive than non-apprentices and that they earned a higher annual net profit of over £1,300 per apprentice when compared to non-apprentices. Reduced costs Example: Compass has seen training and recruitment costs fall significantly due to higher staff retention. Apprentices also impact on management recruitment as they progress into higher roles, leading to additional savings. Higher staff retention Example: British Gas apprentices who start their working life with the company have a higher commitment to the overall aims and objectives of the company and have high retention rates as a result (95% - much higher than their sector averages). Staff turnover in the retail sector is high. However Tesco apprentices are more likely to stay with the company, compared with other young employees.
If you would like to benefit from taking on an apprentice then we can help you to find the right person.
