Welcome to our Chinese New Year Celebrations, also known as the Spring Festival, the most widely celebrated in the Asian calendar.
In 2014 we look forward to welcoming the Year of the Horse. Traditionally a family celebration, our partner organisations invite individuals, friends and familes to come together at an exciting series of events, performances, exhibitions and workshops across Broxtowe, Gedling, Nottingham and Rushcliffe where you can enjoy crafts, music and our spectacular fireworks finale at Highfields Park.
Chinese paper lanterns Important warning Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire Fire & Rescue and The University of Nottingham do not support the use or sale of lanterns from Highfields Park. Please note that The University of Nottingham Security staff will be patrolling the park and anyone selling these lanterns will be asked to leave. The launching of lanterns is also prohibited for reasons of health and safety.

A great opportunity for Gedling families to hear traditional Chinese stories and songs and to take part in a variety of Chinese inspired arts and crafts activities including lantern making. Performances inspired by Chinese New Year throughout the afternoon.

• Chinese Student & Scholars Dragon dance • Nottingham & Derby 7 Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu: Demonstrations of self-defence with ancient weaponry and spectacular two person fighting routines • Chinese Tumblers. Amazing acrobatic performances • A Tibetan dance by Du Dan portraying traditional annual love song contests • Family procession with Chinese Lion Dancing and drumming featuring pupils from a local school starting at Beeston square and finishing at Broadgate Park

CHINESE CULTURAL EVENT AT THE PEARSON CENTRE
Enjoy a FREE afternoon of interactive Chinese inspired workshops and performances. Activities and shows will be suitable for all ages and abilities. No need to book. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times.
Jujie Li: Tea tasting and traditional tea ceremonies Juije Li: Traditional Chinese paper folding & cutting workshop Community Celebration Group: Craft activities based around the theme of the Chinese New Year Jennifer Liau: Chinese lantern and flower making craft workshop using special red envelopes imported from the Far East Lijie Plant: Chinese calligraphy using traditional brush painting methods Peter Millward: Traditional Chinese silk painting Nottingham & Derby 7 Star Praying Mantis group will also be holding a Tai Chi Chuan workshop for all ages. Get the feel good factor!
Performances Melvyn Rawlinson will use the ‘Kamishibai’ story box, a traditional style in Japan from the early part of the last century, to tell the story of “The Great Race” and how the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar were chosen.
• ‘Written in Dust’ by Ling Peng and Kamal Joory: A live musical performance combining traditional Chinese instrumentation and modern digital sampling
Melvyn will also perform using his large vintage Opera Marionettes; originally used in an old Puppet Theatre in Beijing. Nottingham & Derby 7 Star Praying Mantis group will perform a Lion dance welcoming in the New Year. It is said that people watching the Lion dance will be blessed with health, wealth & happiness.

Interactive workshops
A TASTE OF CHINA WORKSHOPS & RESIDENCY
Join Ling Peng and get a ‘Taste of China’ through music, storytelling, arts and Dragon dancing workshops. These workshops are back by popular demand and will be held in several Broxtowe Schools. A number of pupils will then perform at the event in Broadgate Park on Saturday 1st February in Beeston and the Chinese New Year event at Lakeside Arts Centre on the evening of Sunday 2nd February. Qing Imperial Cityscapes
An exhibition which looks at the work of Yangshi Lei – the architectural dynasty – who took charge of most of the Qing Emperors’ construction projects during the last empire of China (1644 – 1911). Yangshi Lei’s projects form one of the keystones of world cultural heritage and in this small selection taken from historic manuscripts, we focus on the beauty of the Forbidden City. With thanks to Dr Qi Wang for his assistance in organising this exhibition, and to Professor Qihen Wang of Tianjin University for permission and National Natural Science Foundation of China to reproduce items from the Yangshi Lei Architectural Archives.
The full exhibition can be seen in the Department of Architecture and Built Environment and the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies during the same period.

Drop in and try your hand at the traditional Chinese arts of paper cutting and paper folding, brush painting and calligraphy, under the guidance of experts from the School of Contemporary Chinese Studies and Confucius Institute, The University of Nottingham.

A silent tragedy of modern times: Friends. Love. Money. Lies. Death. Hope
Written in Dust is a contemporary silent film, directed by Gareth Rees, with a live music score from classical Chinese musician Ling Peng (erhu) and electronic music artist DJ Si Tew. The film tells the tragic tale of 3 young Chinese rural migrants who come in search of the new life that modern Beijing promises. The tensions created by the pursuit of money and the repression of love lead to moral corruption, betrayal, lies and the ultimate tragedy. Gareth Rees has had films screened at Raindance Film Festival, BBC British Shorts Festival, Aarhus Festival of Popular Arts and Channel 4, as well as experimental work shown at Tate Britain, ICA, and Filmstock Film Festival. This is his first feature film and has been selected by Edinburgh Film Guild for their New British Directors Season 2013. There will also be Tai-Chi demonstrations and workshops, and locally based storyteller Nicky Rafferty will be telling some traditional folk tales from China.

a selection of other items. We are also delighted to welcome Nottingham-based Chinese classical musician Ling Peng to the Recital Hall with a selection of solo works performed on the erhu. To round off the evening there will be several works especially selected by Xufei to be performed by the duo.
Multi-award-winning guitarist Xufei Yang is well known to Lakeside audiences – most recently for her stunning performance of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez at our Summer Symphony concert. Tonight she will be performing a new commission by the Guangzhou born composer Chen Li inspired by traditional Chinese folk melodies, amongst

Outdoor Stage and Fireworks
Wrap up warmly and be prepared for all weathers! Then come and join us to welcome The Year of the Horse with performances on our outdoor stage and a grand finale firework celebration across Highfields Lake. Compered by BBC Radio Nottingham’s Mark Dennison, the programme will include a Lion Dance, a Dragon Dance, traditional music on hulusi and flute by Yang Zhao, dancers from Nottingham Chinese School, and many other performances. The evening will come to a spectacular close with fireworks across the lake especially designed for us by Crescendo Fireworks.
