edward burra saturday 3 March - sunday 27 May
this is the first major exhibition for over twenty-five years of the work of edward burra (1905-1976), providing the opportunity to reassess one of the most individual and celebrated british artists of the twentieth century.
for much of his life the artist lived in the picturesque sussex town of rye from which he travelled widely to such countries as france, spain, mexico and the Usa. some of his most memorable images were inspired by these trips, notably his ‘low life’ scenes of sailors and prostitutes in the southern ports of france and his affectionate depictions of 1930s harlem and boston nightlife that led him to be described as the ‘best painter of the american scene.’
burra created a large body of memorable paintings during his lifetime, characterized by their unusually powerful handling of the watercolour medium and his singular taste for the macabre.
burra’s love of theatrical spectacle, film and ballet, was exuberantly expressed in his depictions of music halls and movie stars. he was also one of the greatest british designers for the stage of the twentieth

century and created striking décor and costumes for several notable ballets and operas, the designs for which have been brought together in this exhibition for the first time. in the later part of his life, burra travelled extensively around the british isles and the show concludes with some monumental watercolours of his native landscape. edWard bUrra is a pallant house gallery touring exhibition, curated by simon martin. the exhibition has been sponsored by lefevre fine art ltd and supported by the pallant house gallery edward burra supporters’ circle.

Memes Kashif Nadim Chaudry kashif nadim chaudry’s stunning and dramatic exhibition of new work has been produced during his residency at lakeside arts centre during 2010 and 2011. it takes its title from the term coined by the evolutionary biologist richard dawkins, author of The Selfish Gene [1976], to describe ‘a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation’ - analogous to a gene - capable of spreading and perpetuating cultural ideas and values. in a series of sculptural investigations extending throughout the three spaces of the djanogly art gallery, the artist explores this notion of inherited value systems and of ‘traditional’ acts of ritual and ceremony from the perspective of his pakistani and muslim heritage, and more specifically from his marginalised identity as a british-born gay man. With a family background in tailoring and a formal art training in textiles at goldsmith’s college, london, his sculptural installation makes lavish use of fabric and stitch, drawing inspiration from the disparate worlds of elizabethan costume, islamic and gothic architecture, and the catholic monstrance. decoration and overembellishment as an expression of power and intimidation lie at the heart of their aesthetic vocabularies. recognising also the potential within authority for vicious acts of terror and repression, in this new work nadim pursues his interest in the idea of opulence and excess spilling over into tumour and disease, of impotent acts and contradictory spaces.

14 Art - special Collections Friday 4 May 2012 - sunday 16 september 2012 Weston gallery admission free d h lawrence has proved an endlessly fascinating, and controversial, subject for memoirists, literary biographers and the general public. since his death in 1930, his legacy has been subject to continual re-evaluation in line with shifts in his literary reputation and changing perceptions of his impact on twentieth-century british culture. this exhibition traces the origins and development of the biographical preoccupation with lawrence. it begins with examples of lawrence’s own occasional self-reflective words and describes how quickly public confrontations arose in the early 1930s between friends, family members and other biographers who offered starkly differing accounts of his life and legacy. the story continues through the beginnings of modern scholarship on lawrence to the present, showing how recent discoveries are offering fresh perspectives and generating new biographical narratives. the display draws on original manuscripts and correspondence, contemporary memoirs and other resources in the University of nottingham’s nationally designated d h lawrence collections.

A summer evening concert of orchestral and choral music to mark the end of the academic year. Vaughan Williams’s An Oxford Elegy for narrator, small chorus and chamber orchestra sets two poems by Matthew Arnold evoking a nostalgic romanticism. Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe’s The Fifth Continent was inspired by DH Lawrence’s Kangaroo. ‘Small Town’ describes the country town of Thirroul south of Sydney where Lawrence resided in 1922 while writing the novel. The concert is completed with Mozart’s sparking ‘Paris’ symphony a fitting finale to end-of-year celebrations.
The University Wind Orchestra celebrates two of the major events of 2012. The suite from Malcolm Arnold’s Homage to the Queen and the Courtly Dances from Benjamin Britten’s opera Gloriana, both written for the Queen’s coronation in 1953 are here revived to commemorate her diamond jubilee. The concert also celebrates the forthcoming Olympic Games with Suk’s Towards a New Life (the winner’s music from the 1932 games), John Williams’s Olympic Fanfare and Theme and Michael Torke’s ‘sonic Olympiad’: Javelin.
Duration: approximately 65 minutes, no interval
