LS Lowry occupies a unique position in 20th-century British art; by the end of his life, his instantly recognisable street scenes and industrial landscapes had achieved an unrivalled popularity in the public imagination. His posthumous exhibition held at the Royal Academy in 1976 attracted record numbers of visitors and today the demand for his works at auction continues with apparently no sign of abating. Yet, despite this popular success, the idiosyncrasy of Lowry’s vision has meant that his contribution to the story of modern art in this country is still a contested issue.

This exhibition focuses on Lowry’s work from the beginning of the 20s to the immediate post-war period, from his early forays into the industrial scene to the point at which he began to achieve a degree of commercial success and his interests shifted into the territory of figure painting. In the 1930s, personal crisis brought about by the death of his parents, and the artist’s growing sense of isolation, produced a kind of artistic derailment resulting in an extraordinary body of work whose subject matter chimes with the national zeitgeist of pre-war angst: his views of empty industrial wastelands, derelict buildings and a disturbing series of staring portrait heads will all come as a revelation to those who only know Lowry as the poet of the Lancashire mills.

ART 08 DJANOGLY ART GALLERY

After the war, no longer fettered by the demands of caring for his invalid mother, Lowry began travelling extensively throughout the British Isles - a habit he maintained for the rest of his life - and the exhibition reveals other surprising aspects of his work in the ‘lonely’ landscapes of the Lake District, Yorkshire Moors and Derbyshire, as well as in his remarkable series of sea paintings.

LS Lowry Derelict Building 1941 Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums Collection © The Estate of L.S.Lowry. All rights reserved. DACS 2011

Lowry always attached a great importance to draughtsmanship and alongside the paintings in this exhibition is displayed a large group of pencil drawings ranging from the most cursory of sketches on the back of an old envelope to fully realised studies for his painted compositions.

This exhibition celebrates 130 years of excellence at the University of Nottingham. Supported by Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly and organised in association with the Crane Kalman Gallery, London, it includes a substantial body of works generously loaned by The Lowry Collection, Salford. With special thanks to Carol Ann Lowry and the Estate of L S Lowry.

SOUTHERN STREET STEFAN BONESS A series of photographs by the Berlin and Manchester based photojournalist Stefan Boness, Southern Street forms a poignant companion piece to the Lowry exhibition. It documents a row of Victorian terraced houses in Salford prior to its demolition as part of a contentious government urban renewal programme. Despite the uniformity of the architecture, Boness shows us the individuality imprinted on each abandoned house by the people who once lived there.

ANON SERIES INGE TONG Inge Tong’s Anon series is based on her collection of photographs from the beginning of the last century to the 1970s gleaned over the years from flea markets and shops. Re-working these black and white images in oil on board, her intimate paintings retain the compelling immediacy of her source material, drawing together documents of lives disconnected through time and place into a body of work with its own speculative narrative. THURSDAY 15 SEPTEMBER 6-7PM EXHIBITION PREVIEW AND OPPORTUNITY TO MEET THE ARTIST Please call the Box Office on 0115 846 7777 to book a place.

LAKESIDE’S SMALL-SCALE EXHIBITION SPACE DH LAWRENCE PAVILION | ADMISSION FREE

All this and more... The possibilities are endless! During the summer months, two exciting new developments are being progressed in the Djanogly Art Gallery building, in spaces previously occupied by the Department of Art History which is moving to the new Humanities building. A brand new gallery is being created at the rear of the existing Djanogly Art Gallery, allowing us to enhance the programme with larger exhibitions and, on occasion, exhibitions running concurrently. The original open space of the Angear Visitors Centre will be restored, and a new gallery wall will extend the full length providing more opportunities for the exhibition of contemporary art.

Work is also progressing to develop a new location for the University of Nottingham Museum in the distinctive rotunda building next to the Djanogly Art Gallery. This will provide a more accessible location with an attractive outlook over Highfields Park and the University. A new Learning Studio will provide a shared space for Lakeside’s expanding education programme, supporting visits and sessions for community, schools, college and university groups, and a Collections Resource Room will provide an intimate space for study and research in relation to elements of the Museum’s collections. The capital developments are being supported by the University of Nottingham. There remain numerous opportunities to contribute towards the specialist equipment and fit-out of spaces, and the delivery of the learning programme. If you would like to know more about these opportunities, please contact Shona Powell, Director of Lakeside, on 0115 8467123 or email: shona.powell@nottingham.ac.uk

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS 14 William of Orange was the Dutch replacement for the Catholic James II, placed on the throne as a result of the political turmoil of the Glorious Revolution. This exhibition explores some fierce and strikingly familiar sounding, eighteenth-century debates. Could a Catholic inherit the British crown and how should the nations of England and Scotland be governed under the crown? What were the rights and wrongs of free speech, and was the press dangerously powerful? How could the economy respond to a stock market bubble and crash? Amidst these discussions, playwrights, poets and authors revelled in the scandalous behaviour of certain monarchs and politicians. The displays follow the figure of William Bentinck, one of William of Orange’s closest confidantes and advisors whose service was rewarded with the title Earl of Portland. He was the founder of a powerful political family, based at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire. The Portland papers with their letters and literature, poems and pamphlets, squibs and satire are a key source for this fascinating period in British history.

LUNCHTIME TALKS 1PM - 2PM, ADMISSION FREE A series of lunchtime talks will be held to accompany the exhibition. Places are limited, please book on 0115 846 7777. MONDAY 10 OCTOBER DJANOGLY RECITAL HALL

THE MAGNETS RETURNING BY POPULAR DEMAND

A cappella stars The Magnets are one of the must see acts on the current British music scene. Literally a ‘six-man sound machine’, their music fuses glorious vocal harmonies with jaw dropping beatboxing to create a sound as rich as any band. The Magnets return to Lakeside hot from an appearance at the Glastonbury Festival and high profile appearances on Comic Relief and the TMobile ‘Life’s for Sharing’ a cappella flash-mob commercials.

This is a show that will change the way you think about vocal harmony. Highlights include a sultry version of ‘Lost in Music’ by Sister Sledge, an electrifying mash up of New Order’s ‘Blue Monday’ and Rihanna’s ‘Only Girl (In The World)’ and one of The Magnets’ trademark show-stopping A-Z medleys, all delivered via a multiplicity of styles and vocal stunts, cool moves and superb theatrics, but absolutely no musical instruments. “A sonic phenomenon you have to see and hear to believe...they’re a band to watch in 2011.” The Guardian

Josef Suk’s gorgeous Fantastic Scherzo is replete with attractive Czech folk tunes. Inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Stravinsky’s neoclassical ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ earned its title from the Washington D.C. estate owned by the former diplomat who commissioned the work. A new composition by talented postgraduate student Alexander Kolassa receives its premiere, and the programme is completed with Rachmaninov’s dazzling Symphonic Dances, his final composition which contrasts moods from May-time festivities, nostalgia for his Russian homeland, to the ultimate dance of death. Baroque composers were quite unscrupulous when it came to borrowing from others. FITZWILLIAM STRING QUARTET

LISZT Les Années de Pèlerinage Suisse SCHUBERT Sonata No.18 in G major, D894 Inspired by the Romanic literary works of Byron, Schiller and Senancour, and the magisterial landscape of Swiss mountains and lakes, much of Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage Suisse was composed during a 16-month sojourn from 18356. Revised in 1855, the collection is brilliantly effective in depicting natural scenes and conveying constantly changing moods. Andreas Haefliger’s first visit to Lakeside was a highlight of the season, his return concert is not to be missed. The concert finishes at approximately 9.15pm

JS BACH Art of Fugue: excerpts MOZART String Quartet No1 in G, K80 BRUCKNER Intermezzo BRUCKNER String Quintet Bruckner’s String Quintet was written at the request of Joseph Hellmesberger, the Director of the Vienna Conservatoire. On completion in July 1879 Hellmesberger regarded the Scherzo as being too technically challenging so Bruckner composed the Intermezzo which we also hear this evening, as a replacement movement. The emotional core of the Quintet, however, is the Adagio with its expansive, contemplative mood. Bruckner’s contrapuntal techniques owe much to his study of Bach’s music and the concert opens with selections from Art of Fugue. Mozart’s first string quartet written when he was 14 completes the programme. The concert finishes at approximately 9.15pm 6.45pm Pre-concert talk by Alan George

FLOATING MESSAGES AND FADING FREQUENCIES Athelas Sinfonietta conducted by Pierre-André Valade with Annie Gosfield, sampler keyboard Roger Kleier, electric bass guitar Chris Cutler, drums/percussion

New York composer-performer Annie Gosfield creates some of the most compelling sounds in today’s new music. Finding the warmth in mechanical, musical, industrial and signal noise, her use of sampled sounds is sophisticated and captivating.

“Working in what is usually considered a boys-with-toys aesthetic, Gosfield avoids the urge to charge into bloody, earsplitting battle against the harsh reality of 21st century noise and decay. Instead, she listens for its beauty.” Time Out New York

This landmark show brings together her Trio with Denmark’s leading new music ensemble for the premiere of a major new work, Floating Messages and Fading Frequencies, based on the secret radio transmissions between British Intelligence and the Danish Resistance in the Second World War. The theme continues with a new suite by Karsten Fundal based on his music to the Resistance film Flame & Citron, and is rounded off with EWA7, Annie’s signature ‘industrial’ piece for factory sounds, guitar, drums and percussion.

“Her music is unlike anything in the current European chamber spectrum, coupling zest and imaginative poetics with a warming textural glow underlying the spikiness.” The Wire

Andriessen’s Workers Union wrestles with the ideas of individual freedom versus rhythmic discipline as a metaphor for the problems of organising and carrying out political action. MacMillan’s Cantos Sagrados sets poems concerned with political repression in Latin America alongside religious texts. Britten’s short a cappella work Advance Democracy was composed at the time of the Munich crisis in 1938. WRITTEN BY STEPHEN LOWE DIRECTED BY MATT ASTON “I’m arguing with Jesus - how much more insane can I get?” The answer for Cecilia is more, much more. Recently bereaved, and lost to the world and herself, CECILIA finds herself at the legendary Rennes Le Chateau in the South of France, believed by many to be the final resting place of Mary Magdalene, where she hopes and prays for meaning. SÉANCE IS A LOVE STORY. But who are the lovers? After the successes of his previous two plays at Lakeside - the thriller Smile and Empty Bed Blues which focused on the last year of D H Lawrence’s life, Stephen Lowe now turns to the question of faith for this ultimately comic meditation on love, life and death. “This intelligent new piece from Stephen Lowe, a two-hander and a thriller, is utterly different from his new Brian Clough play, The Devil’s League, but it shares with it that thing called excellence.” Nottingham Post on Smile “Directed by Matt Aston, this is another fine in-house production from Lakeside Arts Centre” Nottingham Post on Empty Bed Blues

Different aspects of these processes will be discussed from both personal and professional perspectives. THURSDAY 20 OCTOBER The second talk will explore the broader experience of loss, including, marriage, employment and home, and consider how someone might rebuild their life after such experiences. WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER MARY MAGDALENE: TRUTH AND FICTIONS Dr Alison Milbank, Associate Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Nottingham, explores our endless fascination with Mary Magdalene by introducing some of her many different appearances in literature including the sacred, gnostic and contemporary texts.

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING A MAPPA MUNDI | THEATR MWLDAN CO-PRODUCTION

Shakespeare’s popular comedy tells of two pairs of lovers. Headstrong Beatrice and proud Benedick live in staunch denial of their true feelings for each other, whilst lovesick Claudio and sweet, naive Hero are head over heels with devotion. But the path of true love never runs smooth, and with foul play and mischief afoot at the hands of devious villain Don John, this classic play promises plenty of scope for Mappa Mundi’s unmistakable style. Over the past two decades cult Welsh theatre company Mappa Mundi have built a reputation for gloriously irreverent, populist and accessible adaptations of classic theatrical and literary works.

“I had rather hear my dog bark at a crow than a man swear he loves me.” Beatrice

Episode’s intricately assembled world of childhood invention and trauma brings to life the darker recesses of graphic novels, film and fairytales in an offbeat trail of dreamlike movement. Requardt has drawn together a wish list of creative collaborators that includes three exceptional dancers, Valentina Formenti, Inn Pang Ooi and Eva Recacha Garcia, Hannah Clark’s fantastical designs and award winning lighting designer Chahine Yavroyan. The score features Niko Meinhold live on piano, Andrew Plummer’s spine tingling vocals and an eerie soundtrack by Ben and Max Ringham. “Episode is simultaneously one of the most controlled and most violently bizarre dance events I've reviewed in a long time.” **** The Guardian Presented in partnership with DANCE4

1O It’s with great pleasure that we launch the autumn season at Lakeside, and in so doing we mark our 10th operational year as Lakeside Arts Centre.

Lustre will reopen the Djanogly Art Gallery building following its extension work at the beginning of November, closely followed by a groundbreaking L S Lowry exhibition including some works never previously seen in a public context.

Since the D H Lawrence Pavilion opened in 2001-02, more than 1 million visitors have experienced theatre, dance, music, visual arts, crafts, workshops, talks and related events across the Lakeside complex of Djanogly Art Gallery, Djanogly Recital Hall and D H Lawrence Pavilion. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed lunches, coffees and pretheatre suppers in Aqua and Café L.

Later this year we’ll open the new Museum of Archaeology next to the Art Gallery which will focus on 250,000 years of everyday objects, including many found in our own locality as well as loans from regional and national collections.

In 2011-12 there will more world premières, international artists, and high profile exhibitions than ever before. Our participation programme has never been stronger, with the launch of a brand new performance oriented youth theatre group, as well as an increased number of curriculum related workshops, and the advent of a new Associate Artist programme bringing the chance to join in to even more people. Thank you for your support over our first decade. We hope you’ll find even more to experience and enjoy at Lakeside in the next 10 years. Shona Powell, Director, and all of the Lakeside Team
