LS Lowry occupies a unique position in 20th-century British art; by the end of his life, his instantly recognisable street scenes and industrial landscapes had achieved an unrivalled popularity in the public imagination. His posthumous exhibition held at the Royal Academy in 1976 attracted record numbers of visitors and today the demand for his works at auction continues with apparently no sign of abating. Yet, despite this popular success, the idiosyncrasy of Lowry’s vision has meant that his contribution to the story of modern art in this country is still a contested issue.

This exhibition focuses on Lowry’s work from the beginning of the 20s to the immediate post-war period, from his early forays into the industrial scene to the point at which he began to achieve a degree of commercial success and his interests shifted into the territory of figure painting. In the 1930s, personal crisis brought about by the death of his parents, and the artist’s growing sense of isolation, produced a kind of artistic derailment resulting in an extraordinary body of work whose subject matter chimes with the national zeitgeist of pre-war angst: his views of empty industrial wastelands, derelict buildings and a disturbing series of staring portrait heads will all come as a revelation to those who only know Lowry as the poet of the Lancashire mills.

ART 08 DJANOGLY ART GALLERY

After the war, no longer fettered by the demands of caring for his invalid mother, Lowry began travelling extensively throughout the British Isles - a habit he maintained for the rest of his life - and the exhibition reveals other surprising aspects of his work in the ‘lonely’ landscapes of the Lake District, Yorkshire Moors and Derbyshire, as well as in his remarkable series of sea paintings.

Lowry always attached a great importance to draughtsmanship and alongside the paintings in this exhibition is displayed a large group of pencil drawings ranging from the most cursory of sketches on the back of an old envelope to fully realised studies for his painted compositions.

This exhibition celebrates 130 years of excellence at the University of Nottingham. Supported by Sir Harry and Lady Djanogly and organised in association with the Crane Kalman Gallery, London, it includes a substantial body of works generously loaned by The Lowry Collection, Salford. NEW PERSPECTIVES ON LOWRY A walkabout tour with a difference led by a relay team of six postgraduates researching in a variety of disciplines at the university who will each bring their expertise to bear on one work in the LOWRY exhibition. Each speaker will have a maximum of 10 minutes before handing the baton on to the next with an opportunity for a Q&A session at the end of the evening. SOUTHERN STREET STEFAN BONESS A series of photographs by the Berlin and Manchester based photojournalist Stefan Boness, Southern Street forms a poignant companion piece to the Lowry exhibition. It documents a row of Victorian terraced houses in Salford prior to its demolition as part of a contentious government urban renewal programme. Despite the uniformity of the architecture, Boness shows us the individuality imprinted on each abandoned house by the people who once lived there.

ANON SERIES INGE TONG Inge Tong’s Anon series is based on her collection of photographs from the beginning of the last century to the 1970s gleaned over the years from flea markets and shops. Re-working these black and white images in oil on board, her intimate paintings retain the compelling immediacy of her source material, drawing together documents of lives disconnected through time and place into a body of work with its own speculative narrative. All this and more... The possibilities are endless! During the summer months, two exciting new developments are being progressed in the Djanogly Art Gallery building, in spaces previously occupied by the Department of Art History which is moving to the new Humanities building. A brand new gallery is being created at the rear of the existing Djanogly Art Gallery, allowing us to enhance the programme with larger exhibitions and, on occasion, exhibitions running concurrently. The original open space of the Angear Visitors Centre will be restored, and a new gallery wall will extend the full length providing more opportunities for the exhibition of contemporary art.

Work is also progressing to develop a new location for the University of Nottingham Museum in the distinctive rotunda building next to the Djanogly Art Gallery. This will provide a more accessible location with an attractive outlook over Highfields Park and the University. A new Learning Studio will provide a shared space for Lakesideâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s expanding education programme, supporting visits and sessions for community, schools, college and university groups, and a Collections Resource Room will provide an intimate space for study and research in relation to elements of the Museumâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collections. The capital developments are being supported by the University of Nottingham. There remain numerous opportunities to contribute towards the specialist equipment and fit-out of spaces, and the delivery of the learning programme. Calling all Teachers... In Search of Margidunum - A Museum in a Trunk! Suitable for all age groups this mini museum is an archaeological treasure trove, it’s a dressing up box and a journey into the past... This resource is available to all schools – inside a 1930s cabin trunk, you will find artefacts and posters based on finds from the Roman site of MARGIDUNUM at Bingham, Nottinghamshire. Including costumes, fragments of Roman metal work, coins and building materials as well as Roman pottery and replicas of items from the Museum collection.

The museum is based in the Department of Archaeology. It is along Cut Through Lane opposite the Hallward Library. It will be moving to the Lakeside complex in the autumn as part of the redevlopment (see page 12).

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS 14 William of Orange was the Dutch replacement for the Catholic James II, placed on the throne as a result of the political turmoil of the Glorious Revolution. This exhibition explores some fierce and strikingly familiar sounding, eighteenth-century debates. Could a Catholic inherit the British crown and how should the nations of England and Scotland be governed under the crown? What were the rights and wrongs of free speech, and was the press dangerously powerful? How could the economy respond to a stock market bubble and crash? Amidst these discussions, playwrights, poets and authors revelled in the scandalous behaviour of certain monarchs and politicians. The displays follow the figure of William Bentinck, one of William of Orange’s closest confidantes and advisors whose service was rewarded with the title Earl of Portland. He was the founder of a powerful political family, based at Welbeck Abbey in Nottinghamshire. The Portland papers with their letters and literature, poems and pamphlets, squibs and satire are a key source for this fascinating period in British history.

‘THE NEW STATE OF ENGLAND’? THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION AND ITS AFTERMATH IN THE HISTORIC COLLECTIONS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM At the dawn of the eighteenth century a Dutch king was sitting on the English throne. A new era in British politics and cultural life had begun. This exhibition showcases the early archives of the Portland family held by Manuscripts and Special Collections to chart a journey through the tumultuous decades 1685-1720.

Richard Hunt, Assistant Archivist, Manuscripts and Special Collections investigates the impact of the South Sea Bubble, one of the earliest stock market crashes, on the first Duke of Portland and its wider implications for the country at the time. THURSDAY 10 NOVEMBER DJANOGLY THEATRE

Come and see some rocks that simply sparkle and shine through the dark and gloomy winter days, you can also finish your Christmas shopping with work by many other leading contemporary craft makers, including ceramics, jewellery, textiles and glass.

Eating at Lakeside Cafe L - re-opening after our Gallery and Museum development in November, Cafe L will offer freshly made sandwiches and snacks, salads and cakes in a family friendly atmosphere. A new composition by talented postgraduate student Alexander Kolassa receives its premiere, and the programme is completed with Rachmaninov’s dazzling Symphonic Dances, his final composition which contrasts moods from May-time festivities, nostalgia for his Russian homeland, to the ultimate dance of death. Revised in 1855, the collection is brilliantly effective in depicting natural scenes and conveying constantly changing moods. Andreas Haefliger’s first visit to Lakeside was a highlight of the season, his return concert is not to be missed. The concert finishes at approximately 9.15pm

JS BACH Art of Fugue: excerpts MOZART String Quartet No1 in G, K80 BRUCKNER Intermezzo BRUCKNER String Quintet Bruckner’s String Quintet was written at the request of Joseph Hellmesberger, the Director of the Vienna Conservatoire. On completion in July 1879 Hellmesberger regarded the Scherzo as being too technically challenging so Bruckner composed the Intermezzo which we also hear this evening, as a replacement movement. The emotional core of the Quintet, however, is the Adagio with its expansive, contemplative mood. Bruckner’s contrapuntal techniques owe much to his study of Bach’s music and the concert opens with selections from Art of Fugue. PRE-SHOW TALKS 6.15 - 7PM FREE As part of Nottingham’s Mental Health Awareness (MHAW) Weeks 2011, 10-21 October, we’re delighted to collaborate with Framework in hosting two pre-show talks. This is playwright Stephen Lowe’s third year of involvement with MHAW, which brings together the broad mental health community with the aims of raising awareness, challenging stigma, and presenting creative and positive images of mental health. The third in our pre-show events features Dr Alison Milbank, Associate Professor in the Department of Theology, University of Nottingham, who teaches religion and culture. MONDAY 17 OCTOBER The first talk will focus on the subjective experience of loss, the personal, emotional, and spiritual processes of adjustment, and the rebuilding of a sense of self. Different aspects of these processes will be discussed from both personal and professional perspectives. THURSDAY 20 OCTOBER The second talk will explore the broader experience of loss, including, marriage, employment and home, and consider how someone might rebuild their life after such experiences. WEDNESDAY 26 OCTOBER MARY MAGDALENE: TRUTH AND FICTIONS Dr Alison Milbank, Associate Professor in the Department of Theology at the University of Nottingham, explores our endless fascination with Mary Magdalene by introducing some of her many different appearances in literature including the sacred, gnostic and contemporary texts.

1O It’s with great pleasure that we launch the autumn season at Lakeside, and in so doing we mark our 10th operational year as Lakeside Arts Centre.

Lustre will reopen the Djanogly Art Gallery building following its extension work at the beginning of November, closely followed by a groundbreaking L S Lowry exhibition including some works never previously seen in a public context.

Since the D H Lawrence Pavilion opened in 2001-02, more than 1 million visitors have experienced theatre, dance, music, visual arts, crafts, workshops, talks and related events across the Lakeside complex of Djanogly Art Gallery, Djanogly Recital Hall and D H Lawrence Pavilion. In addition, hundreds of thousands of people have enjoyed lunches, coffees and pretheatre suppers in Aqua and Café L.

Later this year we’ll open the new Museum of Archaeology next to the Art Gallery which will focus on 250,000 years of everyday objects, including many found in our own locality as well as loans from regional and national collections.

In 2011-12 there will more world premières, international artists, and high profile exhibitions than ever before. Our participation programme has never been stronger, with the launch of a brand new performance oriented youth theatre group, as well as an increased number of curriculum related workshops, and the advent of a new Associate Artist programme bringing the chance to join in to even more people. SCULPTED TEXTILES

With artist Hannah Lobley, make an artefact using the Paperwork process; a unique recycling technique using the printed pages of unwanted books and paper. Pages are layered and transformed into a solid wood-like material, and then traditional wood working methods are applied to create interior objects: wood becomes paper becomes wood.

Textile artist Kashif Nadim Chaudry is artist-in-residence at Lakeside throughout 2011 and will teach you to transform fabric into a variety of exciting three dimensional textile samples by using the Japanese technique of Shibori - a process that involves moulding and shaping fabrics through the application of heat.

SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL Over the last ten years SSF has enabled 90,000 young people of all abilities from 4,248 secondary schools to perform half-hour abridgments of 19 plays in 225 professional theatres. TAKE PART & LEARN 42 GALLERY ART GROUP DURING TERM TIME ONLY Artists working with the three gallery art groups take their inspiration from Lakeside’s exhibition programme. The young people attending these weekly sessions gain new art skills and are encouraged to express their ideas creatively. The dynamic range of art activities reflects the diversity of the work on show, and the young people also enjoy the chance to discuss ideas in a supportive, stimulating environment. Many members choose to take their Bronze, Silver and Gold Arts Awards* while attending Gallery Art Group. SATURDAYS 1.30 - 3PM 8 - 10 YRS, £35 PER TERM TUESDAYS 6 - 8PM 11 - 13 YRS, £45 PER TERM

LAKESIDE YOUTH THEATRE (LYT)

In these sessions we cover the broadest range of theatre skills including devising and improvising, text, mask, mime, dance and music. Participants will have opportunities to perform to an audience, attend theatre trips, register for the Arts Award* and work in other areas of theatre. The sessions for older students have a reputation for strong ensemble work and the weekly sessions offer a platform for members to create, develop and take risks using their own ideas. You will get to work with some exciting artists, performers and professionals, perform in some unusual spaces, devise new and exciting work.

LYT X

Calling all experienced and inspired young collaborators aged 15-19 years interested in developing their creative potential in a dynamic theatre-arts environment and forming an experimental new theatre group. We want to work with young people with commitment and passion for theatre, who are prepared to attend regularly (including additional rehearsals) and take part in some really unusual, inspiring productions, taking risks in a safe environment. The group will hopefully take part in Connections 2012 (New Writing for Young People event). Audition information below.

ACCESS FOR ALL Lakeside is fully accessible to people with a disability. There are level access toilets, designated car parking across all the venues and wheelchair spaces in both the Djanogly Recital Hall and Djanogly Theatre. Where possible please book wheelchair spaces in advance. There is a Sennheiser Infrared enhanced hearing system in the Djanogly Theatre and Performing Arts Workshop Space (where possible headsets should be booked in advance) and an induction loop in the Djanogly Recital Hall, Box Office, Djanogly Art Gallery Desk, Cafe L and Aqua. ASSISTANCE DOGS Assistance dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. BOOKING FEE There is a booking fee of £1 per transaction - with the exception of the following bookings: In person by cash (notes and coins). CONCESSIONS Available to full-time students, in possession of a valid NUS card with photo, state pensioners, registered disabled and their carers, unemployed and children under 16. Please bring proof of concessionary status when buying tickets. DONATE There are many ways in which you can donate and contribute towards the continuing success of Lakeside Arts Centre. If you would like to donate £1 at the end of your booking please inform your Box Office Assistant who will add the amount of your donation to the transaction. Every penny of your donation will go towards either programming or learning at Lakeside. We will not take any administration costs from the money you donate.

ONLINE Book your tickets online (from 1 August) at www.lakesidearts.org.uk (plus booking fee of 5% of total transaction). RESERVATIONS Reservations will be held for a maximum of three working days. On the day of a performance reservations are held until 30 minutes before the start of a show. STUDENT STANDBY TICKETS Limited numbers of £5 tickets are available for students and under 18s for most performances. Available from 5pm on the day of the performance, subject to status and availability. GROUP DISCOUNTS School and college groups receive one free ticket for a teacher / carer for every nine tickets purchased. All other groups can buy nine tickets and get the tenth one free. (Applies to the cheapest ticket.) To receive a group booking tickets MUST be booked in advance at the same time. Discounts do not apply to workshops. LATECOMERS Latecomers may only be admitted during a suitable break in the performance and at the Duty Manager’s discretion. RETURNS Unfortunately no refunds are available for unused tickets. However if an event sells out we will endeavour to sell on spare tickets if received by Box Office prior to the event.

Lakeside Arts Centre is located at the South Entrance to the University of Nottingham campus, just off the A6005, University Boulevard. If approaching by the M1, leave the motorway at junction 25 and join the A52 to Nottingham. Turn right at the third roundabout (Priory), from there the University is signposted.

EVENING Visitors may use any of the University parking areas, which are free in the evening and at weekends. The most convenient of these can be found on Science Road. DAYTIME Limited free daytime parking is available. This can get busy, so please allow extra time. When entering University Park from the south entrance on University Boulevard the Lakeside car park is on the left hand side. Additional pay and display parking is on Science Road, which is first right after the south entrance.

DISABLED PARKING There are designated spaces located close to Lakeside’s venues. If you are visiting the Djanogly Art Gallery or Recital Hall enter University Park from the south entrance on University Boulevard, turn first right into Science Road, and then first right again. For the Djanogly Theatre or other venues located inside the DH Lawrence Pavilion there are 2 spaces in the main Lakeside car park, and an additional 9 spaces next to the lake these can be accessed by driving past the main Lakeside car park (to your left), around past the gatehouse, first left off East Drive along the north approach to the DH Lawrence Pavilion.
