wheee! wouldn’t be complete without our friends architects of air and their amazing structure of colour and light, the luminarium. in 1992, eggopolis was built in nottingham, the first structure toured by architects of air. it laid the foundation for a success that has seen the architects of air luminaria visited by over 2 million people in 40 countries around the world.
WHEEE! LAKESIDE’S INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S THEATRE & DANCE FESTIVAL
in 2012, in celebration of its 20th anniversary, architects of air created its twentieth structure titled exxopolis. The name acknowledges eggopolis, the 'gg' having been replaced by 'xx' to celebrate both the anniversary and the twentieth luminarium design. with exxopolis , alan parkinson aimed to return to his roots and to involve local community groups in its construction. The main dome brought together different elements of design and sectors of the community to create a celebratory centerpiece named the ‘cupola’. inspired by the circular space of the chapter house of southwell minster, the ‘cupola’ features perpendicular style windows that were made by different community groups and that are made up of small pieces of coloured plastic designed to create a ‘stained-glass’ effect. The design of these windows is based on penrose tiling discovered by mathematician and physicist roger penrose. This particular tiling has an organisation similar to that found in islamic tile patterns.
