A Letter From Our Co-Chairs

December 1, 2020 Dear Lake Toxaway Neighbor, We deeply appreciate your 2020 contributions to Lake Toxaway Charities (LTC) and hope you will help us meet our ultimate 2020 goal of more than one million dollars by supporting our annual “endof-year donation request. Year to date LTC raised an astounding $957,345, and you can be proud of this achievement due to your personal generosity. As Transylvania County grows and the Corona virus continues to impact our community members, local charities are experiencing greater needs. To continue to serve them well, we need your support. When you review the enclosed brochure and description of the services of Lake Toxaway Charities recipients, you will see that two thirds of our dollars go to organizations involved in crisis prevention and/or critical care. The remaining third is dedicated to educational endeavors.

Please visit our website at www.laketoxawaycharities.org in order to fully appreciate the needs of our special community and the wonderful impact of your contributions. This brochure also provides information on how you can donate to Lake Toxaway Charities. We accept checks, gifts of appreciated stock, and monetary gifts to the Lake Toxaway Legacy Endowment Fund. Currently 31% of the 900 Lake Toxaway Estates property owners donate annually to this charity. One of our many goals for the future is to increase this percentage as more of our owners choose to support LTC. Lake Toxaway Charities is a 501 (c)(3) organization, and your gift is fully tax deductible. More importantly, 98% of your contributions directly benefit Transylvania County individuals and families who can least afford to pay for assistance. Because volunteers staff LTC, only 2% goes towards minimal expenses such as postage, supplies, printing, insurance, and marketing. Your personal year-end contribution will help us meet our 2020 goal of $1,250,000 to maintain serving the needs of our county. Thank you for your gift to Lake Toxaway Charities. Sincerely,

Chip Brown, Jenny Renfroe, and Diane Roberts Co-Chairs, Lake Toxaway Charities

Granted funds are distributed in June. Lake Toxaway Charities also maintains an Endowment Fund which is held in reserve for emergency requests, anticipated growth of the needs in our county, and perhaps for years with less than average donations.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Since our inception in 1975, Lake Toxaway Charities has offered grants to Transylvania County non-profit organizations. In 2020 we added 7 more agencies to meet the growing needs of our County’s residents, and we currently serve 51 non-profits. Restaurants have closed, jobs were lost, students have struggled, tourism has decreased, and our neighbors require more assistance in basic living needs as our county reels like so many others in this country and across the world due to the COVID-19 virus.

Thank you for providing a grant for the TCS School Nutrition Backpack Buddies program during COVID-19. Your donation graciously allowed us to double our typical Backpack Buddies outreach and truly help families in need. We greatly appreciate your working with us, and value the incredible work you do in the community. TCS School Nutrition Services

Responding specifically to COVID-19 relief emergency appeals, Lake Toxaway Charities raised $174,000 in 2020 from our incredibly generous residents. We are humbled by this support which continues to exceed our hopes. As a result, Lake Toxaway Charities has been able to respond quickly to the ever-increasing needs of local non-profits such as area food banks, shelters, family services, medical providers and others responding to this devastating pandemic.

Sharing house Transylvania Christian Ministry

Lake Toxaway Charities annual donation to the Sharing House was matched by the Smith Martini Foundation of a Lake Toxaway homeowner for a substantial gift to Director Shelly Webb and her Sharing House team. They literally work miracles and save lives within our beloved community.

This amazing gift is an answer to many prayers, offered in these days of great anxiety. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the incredible ways the good people of Lake Toxaway continue to support our community. These days are unprecedented times for many of us. the needs that are emerging from the COVID-19 virus and the disruption it is causing in the economy will make life very difficult for a lengthy period of time. We know of people who continue to struggle, living paycheck to paycheck and our fear is that this will only exacerbate problems with basic life necessities. Rev. Shelly F. Webb – Executive Director of Sharing House

LAKETOXAWAYCHARITIES.ORG

Sharing House is a source of compassion and crisis assistance for our low-income neighbors in Transylvania County, where they offer food and fresh produce, gently-used clothes, rent and utility assistance, household goods, camping equipment, hot showers, a safe place to share stories of struggle and a refuge of social interaction.

“

The generosity of your members is overwhelming and we are humbled at your willingness to move on behalf of the needy in our mountains. Balsam Grove is a very small community with many workers who have big hearts. The partnership with Lake Toxaway Charities has enabled us to meet food needs while helping families to work towards stability and sustainability. Your investment in our communities is greatly appreciated.

Gods Way Food Pantry, a rural church-based food ministry, has served Balsam Grove and surrounding communities for over fifteen years. Over 250,000 lbs of food are distributed yearly, and each month approximately 500 families in Transylvania and Jackson
