The biggest event of the year is just around the corner! Our annual Fourth of July Celebration will be held on Thursday, July 4, featuring an all-American buffet, live music, and special food, games and inflatables for the kids, followed by our incredible fireworks display. Be sure to make your reservations by July 2 to take advantage of discounted rates. Come early for our Family Night on Wednesday, June 3, and plan to stay through the weekend for our special buffet dinners on Friday, June 5, and Saturday, June 6. See the full calendar of events on the back of the July calendar in this newsletter. Please note that reservations are required for most activities. We want everyone to have a good time on July 4. However, significant damage to the golf course has occurred in the past due to homeowners shooting fireworks and using the golf course for other purposes such as games. Please remember that the grass is delicate; be sure to do your part to protect one of our greatest amenities. It’s not too early to start thinking about our big charity events of the summer. This community is always wonderful about coming together for a good cause, and I’m sure this year will be no different. Lake Toxaway Charities will hold their annual fundraising events on Saturday, July 20, with golf, tennis, and croquet activities, followed by the annual dinner/dance. See more details throughout this issue. Patriot Weekend will be held on August 31 and September 1, with two full days of events designed to bring our community together and raise funds to create scholarships for the families of our killed or wounded service members. Learn more at laketoxawaycc.com/patriotweekend.

GOLF June was a great month on the course, as we got the season off to an exciting start with tournaments for both men and ladies. The Men’s Member-Member Tournament ended in a tied score of 126 between the teams of Larry Bradner/ Dwight Duke and John Kausch/Ron Follmann, who were crowned as co-champions. In third place, also with a tied score of 131, were the teams of Craig Eyster /Harrie Crowley and Mike Wright/Hank Schuyler. The Ladies Ringer Tournament, which had to be rescheduled due to a rain-out, was played on June 17-18. Winners were Karen Philips/Bette Coningsby, and the runners-up were Billie Messer and Pinky Israel. CONGRATULATIONS to all our recent winners! July promises to be just as busy and exciting. Be sure to check the calendar for a complete listing of all dates and times. Several interclub matches for both men and women will take place in July, and we encourage you to sign up for playwith our neighboring clubs. A Demo Day will be held on Saturday, July 6 from 10:00am until 2:00pm. Representatives from Wilson, Mizuno, Adams, and Cobra will be present to show off the latest golf equipment from their companies. Taylor-Made will have a Demo Day with their newest golf equipment on Saturday, July 13 from 9:00am to 1:00pm. We encourage everyone to come out and try some of these new products.

Celebrate the Fourth of July with our annual ParentChild Tournament. This 9-hole tournament is open to children ages 8-20 and their parent, grandparent, or other favorite adult. The Ladies Member-Guest Tournament will be held Tuesday, July 16. This 18-hole competition is limited to the first 18 foursomes. Please sign up in the Ladies Locker Room. The Men’s Member-Guest Tournament is scheduled for August 8, 9, and 10. There are still spots available, so get a partner and sign up for this fun-filled event. Steve and his crew have done a wonderful job maintaining the course, considering the inclement weather and other various forces of nature. We ask that all members help in maintaining the course. We are seeing a number of divots not being replaced, ball marks not being repaired, and bunkers not being raked. The majority of this is not occurring from outside play, as less than four percent of play is from outside of the community. In addition, as our course gets busier over the next few weeks, please remember to be polite and pick up after your pets. On occasions, pace of play seems to be more of a problem. We want your time on the course to be enjoyable, and we ask that you be ready to play your shot once it is your turn. Also, your choice of tees should reflect your skill level. Playing the set of tees that is most suited to your game will bring out more enjoyment for you and also help in keeping up our pace of play.

CROQUET The 2013 LTMC season is of to a smashing success. Wickets are being made all over our four courts. We have had great turnout for Monday Wine & Wickets and continue to introduce new players to this great game.

Feast with Friends

Interclubs

Members and guests enjoyed an evening of socializing, dining, and listening to an amazing presentation by Robert Balentine, the sponsoring founder of The Southern Highlands Reserve on top of Toxaway Mountain. We learned that The Southern Highlands Reserve, a native plant arboretum and research center, is truly a unique gardens gaining national attention that is located in our own back yard. Robert awed us with his knowledge of and commitment to the native plant life and culture of the Southern Appalachians.

Gary Harden put together a very successful home Interclub match with Trillium and Highlands Country Club. He introduced a mix-and-match format where our club members partnered with the visiting club members for each match. Socializing, fun, and learning were the key goals, and everyone seemed to really enjoy the format. Good job, Gary! The next Interclub is a home match with Cedar Creek and Burlingame on July 18, Let Gary know if you want to play. All skill levels are welcomed.

CATCH YOUR VOLLEYS INSTEAD OF PUNCHING THEM In other words, instead of a swing, just absorb the ball in a catching fashion. Still hands are great hands: I like to hold my grip relaxed until the racquet contacts the ball. Then I squeeze my grip firm at contact to get power and control of the ball. Practice makes perfect!

FITNESS Over 20 million people are practicing yoga: Here’s your opportunity to join them! The science of yoga that evolved in India ages ago has become an increasingly popular form of exercise in the United States, as it delivers many benefits to those who incorporate it into their everyday lives. Yoga is a healing system of theory and practice. The purpose of yoga is to create strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body. While there are more than 100 different types (or schools) of yoga, most sessions are typically comprised of breathing exercises, meditation, and postures that stretch and flex various muscle groups. The regular practice of yoga helps produce many benefits, such as a clear, bright mind and a strong, capable body. The relaxation techniques incorporated in yoga can lessen chronic pain, lower blood pressure, and reduce insomnia. Other physical benefits include: • Increased flexibility • Increased muscle strength and tone • Improved respiration, energy, and vitality • Weight reduction • Cardiovascular and circulatory health • Improved athletic performance • Protection from injury Aside from the array of physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is how it helps a person manage stress. Stress can reveal itself in many ways, including back or neck pain, sleeping problems, headaches, drug abuse, or an inability to concentrate. Yoga can be very effective in developing coping skills; improving mood, attitude, mental clarity, and calmness; increasing body awareness; and relieving chronic stress patterns. Yoga’s growing popularity is proof that many people value an exercise system that engages the mind, body and spirit in equal measure. If you’ve never done yoga before, give it a try and see what it can do for you! Join Kim at the Fitness Center on Mondays at 10:15am and Saturdays at 9:00am for a yoga class suitable for all levels of yoga practitioners, including beginners! Practice now and join us for the first Yoga on the Lawn event during Patriot Weekend on Saturday, August 31. Kim is a certified yoga/meditation instructor, a licensed massage therapist, and an energy medicine practitioner from South Florida, who is very excited to spend another season at Lake Toxaway. She believes that it is important to find joy, beauty, and gratitude in every moment and spread that positive energy to all around her.

CLUBHOUSE It is good to be back in Lake Toxaway! Like many of you, I had a great winter down in Florida, working as the service manager at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club in Jupiter. I was able to have many incredible experiences down there and learned a great deal more about the club industry. However, with the arrival of April, it was time to return to Lake Toxaway. It has been so nice to see each and every one of you back at the club, and hope to see more of you in July.

I am really excited about our new staff this year. We have a lot of great new people who are young and energetic and ready to give you a great experience here at the club. All of my new waitstaff are working hard and excited about being here. Chris Cooper is doing a fantastic job down at the Greystone Inn. Jennifer Owen continues to lead our team in the Lakeside Dining Room for breakfast and the Toxaway Room for lunch. Nick Castro keeps the conversation and the drinks flowing in the bar, along with Alex West. Our new special events manger, Erin Schlegel, is really excited about working with you and already doing a great job. Please be sure to contact her with any party needs or requests at (828) 966-4020, extension 23.

We look forward to giving you a fun-filled summer, full of dining, parties, golf, tennis, croquet, and many other activities. No matter what your interests are, we will have something for you here to enjoy at the club! Mike, Greg, and Caleb are really bringing the food to a new level this season. By using all local vegetables, they are striving to get the freshest products on your table while also supporting our community. Other local products such as cheeses and free-range meats are also used to support a healthier diet.

We will start out the month with our annual Fourth of July Celebration. We have so many great events planned for that week, and this is truly a special time to be in Lake Toxaway. Be sure to see the Membership and Food & Beverage pages for more details on upcoming events at the club. Finally, thank you to everyone for your participation in our Welcome Back party! It was a good time for everyone, and we look forward to hosting many more great parties this year. Our first Wine Dinner of the 10

LAKE TOXAWAY COUNTRY CLUB

season was a great success, and I hope you all will make plans to join us at our next one on Wednesday, August 21. I hope you all enjoy a great summer. I look forward to working with each and every one of you.

Gabrielle Johnson

Our summer intern, Gabrielle Johnson, is a rising junior at Michigan State University, majoring in hospitality business with a focus in private club management. She is very active in her school chapter of the Club Managers Association of America, and learned about interning at Lake Toxaway after meeting David Dew at the CMAA Conference.

Gabrielle plays intermural volleyball and softball at Michigan State, and she likes to travel in her free time, especially to see her brother in San Diego. This is Gabrielle’s first time staying in North Carolina, and her first time working in a club. “This is my first club experience, and I’m really enjoying it,” Gabrielle said. “I did lots of touring of hospitality facilities with CMAA, and that’s when I realized that I really like being in the club environment. This is a really great opportunity” Gabrielle’s internship focuses on food and beverage operations, but she will also spend time in other departments. She is doing a stellar job as a server in the dining rooms; you may have already met her in teh Toxaway Room or Lakeside Dining Room. Gabrielle said that Lake Toxaway is “very different” than her hometown. “Where I’m from is all flatland,” she explained. “It’s so beautiful here. What a great place to spend a summer!”
