Summer is finally here and your favorite club events are quickly approaching. The Men’s Toxaway Cup matches will be held on June 6-7, with a Pairing Party on June 5. Later in the month the Ladies Ringer Tournament and 9-Hole Member-Member will also be held. Your Golf Committee has been hard at work revising and revamping several golf events in order to make them more enjoyable and fun for everyone; be sure to ask Lou for all the details. Another exciting event scheduled in June is the National Golf Croquet Tournament being held at the club on June 24-27. Be sure to review the schedule on page 5 of this newsletter and plan to attend. The tournament is sure to be an exciting event for players and spectators alike. A highlight every year is the Member Welcome Back Party. This year's party will be held on June 12. The event is complimentary to members and their dependents. Members may bring guests and non-dependent family members for a fee of $15++ per person. Reservations are required in order to provide our culinary staff with the information they need to plan appropriately. Reserve online or call the Club. Last but certainly not least, I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all members to support the Folds of Honor Foundation. This year Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Gade, Wesley Baugess, and Carey and Sally Brown will be here to tell their stories on June 19. Sponsor donation and reservation information is included in this newsletter and available on the club’s website under Special Events. You may also pick up sponsor forms at the club. Please help provide support to the families of veterans who were injured or killed in service to our country. There are a lot of wonderful days and fun evenings planned in June, so be sure to check the club’s event calendar, and we look forward to seeing you at the club. David Dew, CCM, CCE President

GOLF From Our Golf Course Superintendent… Now that the golf season is officially upon us here at Lake Toxaway, I would like to welcome everyone back as we look forward to a tremendous 2015 season. The golf course maintenance staff has been working hard all winter on various projects and we are very excited about the results and how they will make our members and guests experience more enjoyable. While these projects have been discussed in previous updates, here are some highlights of what we were able to get accomplished.

While some of the more aesthetically appealing work that we did this winter will certainly be noticed, I am more excited about the impact that the verticut and topdressing work will have on the fairways, and how continuing this program will improve the playability moving forward. This process coupled with the drainage work will really change this golf course in a positive way. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or comments. Mike Smith - Director of Golf Maintenance

• Drainage installation on holes #2, #4, #6, #7, #8, and additional work on #17 and # 18 • Cleaned all weeds and brush from high grass areas adjacent to primary rough

Jeff’s Clinics

• Renovation of warm up area (new mat, new trees, new club stands, drainage, parking area)

Sign up by calling the Learning Center at 828-862-3789.

• Verticut (remove thatch) and top dress all fairways (400 tons of sand)

COED CLINICS

• Rock work (flagstone) along cart path hole #10

Saturdays | 10:00am-11:00am

• Drainage and washout repair to left of hole #11

LADIES-ONLY CLINICS

• Install rock walk path to hole #3 ladies tee • Replace 80 feet of cart path between #11 green and #12 tees • Install drainage and level area between clubhouse and putting green at the Learning Center • Laser level the croquet lawns There were some other items, including new tees, that we were unable to address due to the impact that the weather had on our work. Plans are still in place to install the new pink tee boxes at #2, #8 and #17. The weather has been a challenge since March as we have gone from torrential rain through March and April, to higher than normal temperatures and no rain through the first 3 weeks of May. We have been 10 degrees above normal the entire month and have had only a ½ inch of rain. The lack of rain in early May was a challenge as we have had to deal with a lot of dry areas throughout the golf course much earlier than normal.

CROQUET Croquet Update... Greetings, fellow CROQUENUTS! The croquet season is now in progress! Our first Wine and Wickets was held on May 18, and will be held every Monday throughout the season. Come out and join your fellow club members in the pleasure of the game and the pleasure of socializing. Mentoring begins at 3:00pm, and play begins at 3:30pm. Head to the Clubhouse following play and join everyone for dinner. Good friends make for good company! This summer Kenny, our Tennis and Croquet Pro, has started an American Rules fee-based teaching clinic. The fee is modest! The clinic is held on Thursdays at 9:30am, and is followed by American Rules doubles games, where an A player is paired with a B player to play a similarly paired doubles opponent. The Mallet Club would like to see more players learn and enjoy the pleasureful and skillful American Rules game! Give it a try! This season we have continued the Sunday afternoon golf croquet singles play with the cheerful and competitive Melba Bishop in charge of organizing play. Sunday afternoons are a good time to hone your skills for the many interclub matches our Interclub Chairman Ted Mullett, has scheduled. Our first interclub match is on Thursday, June 4 at Toxaway against Burlingame. The ten clubs up and down the mountains have become very competitive and enjoy playing each other, especially on our pristine lawns. Let’s compete well! The Mallet Club’s first Feast with Friends is on Monday, June 8 following Wine & Wickets. The speaker will be the retired Congressman Jack Edwards from the 5th District of Alabama. Jack served in Congress for twenty years, retiring in 1985. He served under five Presidents from Lyndon Johnson through Ronald Reagan’s first term. As a Republican leader in the House of Representatives he met with Presidents Nixon, Ford, Carter and Reagan on a weekly basis. Jack was known as an expert on National Defense having been the senior Republican for ten years on the Defense Subcommittee of

the Appropriations Committee. Jack’s talk will have some serious notes but will mostly be about his unique and often times humorous experiences with these five Presidents. On Saturday, June 13 the Transylvania Cup Open Croquet Tournament, in memory of our own Isabel Nichols, will be held at Lake Toxaway. This doubles tournament is to benefit the Transylvania Endowment which benefits many Transylvania County organizations. The entree fee is $100 per player. To enter please e-mail transylvaniacup@aol. com. Exciting news! The Lake Toxaway Country Club has been invited and is proud to host on its beautiful croquet lawns the National Golf Croquet Championships, June 24 through June 27. The top ranked croquet players in America will be competing in this Championship and they will provide for us an exciting spectator opportunity. Anyone interested in housing a player should contact Wes Dickman. Let’s all support and enjoy this event! Fred Caswell is responsible for collecting the dues. See you all on the courts. May your mallets be slow and low, and your swings follow through, and then the wickets will fly! George Bagwell - Lake Toxaway Mallet Club

MEMBERSHIP From Our Membership Director... Over the winter months, the Executive Committee generously gave of their time and reviewed all of the Club’s Rules and Policies. Recommended policy changes were made and have subsequently been implemented. A complete copy of the 2015 revised Rules and Policies can be found on the Club’s website by logging onto the Member Side and then clicking on CLUB > NEWS > MEMBERSHIP. This month I would like to draw your attention to the revised Guest policy. I have included a portion of the Guest policy in this issue of the Clubhouse Connection; however I encourage you to review the complete policy on the Club’s website. Please feel free to call or email me if you have any questions. Laura Johnson - Membership Director --------------------------------------------------------------------SECTION 6. GUESTS RESIDENT GUEST A Resident Guest is any person that resides or lives (permanently or seasonally) in a property within Lake Toxaway Estates and is a guest of a member of the Club. Resident Guests are permitted to use the Club facilities when accompanied by a Member on a daily basis. Resident Guest usage is limited to six daily usage occasions in any given Club fiscal year. A daily usage is considered to be one activity or amenity usage for a given day for all individuals residing in the Resident Guest’s property at Lake Toxaway Estates (e.g., if a property owner in Lake Toxaway Estates and his spouse are guests of a member for dinner that would be considered one daily usage occasion whereas if the owner played golf and the spouse played tennis on a given day, that would count as two daily usage occasions). Terminated members may not be considered a Resident Guest. Resigned members who still live within the Estates may be a Resident Guest as outlined above but may not engage in Club sponsored activities, such as Member-Guest events, Thursday night Twilight events, Mallet Club Speaker Series, etc. Other events sponsored by third party organizations such

as the Transylvania Regional Hospital, Lake Toxaway Charities, Back Porch Bible Study, etc. do not count towards the six daily usage occasions limitation. NON-RESIDENT GUEST A Non-Resident Guest is considered to be any person(s) that does not own/is not renting property within Lake Toxaway Estates and is a guest of a member at the Club. Non-Resident guest privileges shall not exceed the privileges permissible to the sponsoring member. NonResident guests may have guest privileges for up to 30 days per year and are not limited for activities or events during those 30 days. FAMILY GUEST Family guests include dependents, non-dependent children/grandchildren and parent/grandparents of the member. Dependents have no restriction of usage of the Club within the privileges permissible to the member. Non-dependent family members may receive a guest card which will entitle them to Club privileges permissible to the member. SEASONAL GUEST A Seasonal Guest is one who rents or leases the premises of a member who is away (“Lessor Member”). If a member owns more than one home within Lake Toxaway Estates, the member may only rent the premises they are living in with the ability to offer Club privileges. The Lessor Member must request a guest card granting the Seasonal Guest Club privileges for the tenure of the lease. The Seasonal Guest will be subject to the effective renter rates, stated on the annual schedule of fees. Only one Seasonal Guest is allowed per membership at a time, and Seasonal Guest privileges will not be granted at the same time a member is actively using their privileges. Seasonal Guests may only be sponsored by members who hold the Full Membership dues classification. Charges incurred by a Seasonal Guest will not be a credit to the sponsor member’s dining room minimum charge.

Folds of Honor Foundation Scholarships for Families of Veterans

Special Evening Program to Thank Lake Toxaway Sponsors

Friday, June 19, 2015

Where: Home of Jack and Shirley Kaplan, 77 Homestead Road, LakeToxaway, NC, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Food & Drinks provided by the Event Committee Program: Tony Biata, National Director of Patriot Golf Day, Folds of Honor Foundation Wesley Bauguess & her two daughters, Scholarship Recipients of FoHF from North Carolina LTC Daniel Gade, US Military Academy/West Point, Commanding Officer of LT Tyler Brown Carey & Sally Brown, parents of LT Tyler Brown, Atlanta GA

Tickets: This Event will be limited to the first 50 Sponsors to send in their Reservation Form and Donation Check over $625. Each Sponsor is entitled to bring their Spouse or Guest. Deadline is June 12, 2015. Recognition: ALL DONATIONS of Any Size are sincerely appreciated and will be recognized in a variety of media releases. Goal: We understand some Sponsors may not be able to attend this Special Event. We are trying to add as many Scholarships as possible from the Lake Toxaway Community. Since 2012, Lake Toxaway has provided about 70 NEW Scholarships to families of Veterans. AT THIS TIME, OUR VETERANS NEED OUR HELP MORE THAN EVER... The Folds of Honor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization. Can we get another 30 at $5,000/each? CORPORATE/FOUNDATION DONATIONS ARE WELCOME!! Special Note: This is the Major Fund Raiser in 2015 for the Folds of Honor Foundation at Lake Toxaway. LTCC will continue "Patriot Golf Day" over Labor Day Weekend. LTCC will provide the food service and personnel for this event. Message from Jim Dockter: Thank you for your generous support over the past few years. The Scholarships are VERY important to the families of Veterans killed in action or disabled. The Folds of Honor Foundation is one of the most successful Veteran Organizations in the USA. Their administrative costs are very low (important). Tony Biata and Wesley Bauguess will discuss how important these Scholarships are to families who have lost their Veteran. LT Tyler Brown (see attached) was the youngest son of good friends from Atlanta. He was my inspiration to upgrade the "2012 Patriot Golf Day" in Lake Toxaway. In my Final Program, as Chair, you will meet his Commanding Officer and Parents. Lake Toxaway Community...we are in the top ten of all Folds of Honor Foundation Groups over the past three years IN THE USA for New Scholarships. THANK YOU!

Committee: Jim & Becky Dockter, Alex & Lisa Alexander, Jack & Shirley Kaplan, Roger & Renee Alexander
