Welcome to a new season in Lake Toxaway! An exciting summer is already underway and our first two events of the season were a great success. Over 100 people came out for our Family Easter Egg Hunt. Although a light rain threatened the outdoor festivities, we moved the fun inside and the children had a great time. The weather cleared just in time for some of the eggs to be hidden outdoors, but the small children enjoyed hunting for hidden treasure inside the building as well. Enthusiasm resonated on the faces of happy parents and grandparents as their children burned off their extra Easter energy in the bounce house.
Elias and Adelaide, children of members Patrick and Amy McCarter, are all smiles during our Easter festivities
Easter Sunday was an absolutely beautiful day in Lake Toxaway. Our first Sunday Brunch brought an even larger crowd to the clubhouse than the egg hunt. Our staff is very excited to be open again, and it has been delightful for us to see so many members already this year. As our season gets started, I would like to encourage each of you to visit our club’s website to see the most updated information on activities, make reservations, update your contact information, view your monthly statements and tickets, and even send messages directly to other members. If you have trouble logging into the site, you can contact Tara Rybka for assistance. We hope you will make plans to join us for our Kentucky Derby Party on May 3, and Mother’s Day Brunch on May 11. And although it’s still several weeks away, it’s not too soon to make your reservations for our Member Welcome Back Party on June 13. We look forward to seeing you at the club very soon. David Dew, CCM, CCE President
GOLF Mark Your Calendars From Our Golf Pro... Spring 2014 has finally arrived, and we are looking forward to everyone returning. This winter, the Golf Committee has been extremely busy, not only with the drainage project, but also with adding two new ladies tees: there has been a new pink tee on Hole #17 for the ladies, and now there is a newlyadded one on #18. Remember that Full Members may book tee times up to 5 days in advance. Social Members may book tee times up to 3 days in advance; they are limited to 5 total rounds per membership per year and are not permitted to participate in tournaments. Clubhouse members are not allowed to play golf. The golf shop is in the process of confirming interclub matches for both the women and the men. This schedule should be complete in mid-May. Lou Biago

MAY SPECIAL: Club Grips 20% off It is important to have good grips on your clubs and to have the right size to match your needs. Ask the staff to inspect your grips… it will make a difference! We also have in stock the larger putter grips, which will eliminate too much hand action in your stroke. Whether you need one grip or a whole set, we will give you a 20% discount off grips during the month of May.
GOLF Golf Committee Update The final challenge related to our successful drainage program will be getting the fairways into good shape. I was at the course in late March and was very impressed with the quality achieved by Mike and his team in replacing all the sod that was taken out during the drainage project. I am very optimistic that you will see no impact to the fairways by early May. Some other improvements you will see by mid May: • Hole #18: Adding a new ladies tee located more forward and to the right, which will help lady golfers get the tee shot past the cart path (there is now no fairway before the cart path crossing) and open up the hole for better vision and direction off the tee. We are also cleaning up the right side rough/woods to help the second shot landing area. • Hole #1: Cleaning up the pond/stream on the left side. • Hole #17: Cleaning up on the right side just short of the green. • Hole #11: Improving the cart parking next to the green. By Memorial Day, Mike and his team are committed to getting the greens up to the speeds that we are used to in July and August. The golf committee plans to hold a meeting in early June for all members who would like to understand the golf course budget for calendar year 2014 and what we plan to accomplish in more detail. Thank you and happy golfing! Dwight Duke 2014 Golf Committee Chair

Now that the spring season has arrived, hopefully the sub-freezing nights are behind us. While the golf course maintenance staff was extremely busy this winter completing the drainage project, we have also been wide open preparing for the coming season. I am confident that everyone will be pleased with the results from the drainage project. There will also be several new and exciting changes that will hopefully add to everyone’s golfing experience. From a maintenance standpoint, our goal will be to improve the playability of the entire golf course. There will be changes to how we maintain the greens and fairways and to how we rake the bunkers. We have already started to improve the bunkers’ consistency by leveling the sand and packing it with a vibratory tamp to make the sand play firmer. We have also changed the method with which we rake the bunkers to help with more consistent lies. The greens aeration went well, although we had three nights with temperatures in the low 20s that brought a heavy frost and slowed their recovery. Warmer weather has now arrived, so I anticipate full recovery by early May. My goal is for the greens to have the speed and firmness that everyone desires once aeration recovery is complete. There will also be a few new changes on the golf course that we hope to have completed by early May. We are adding a new ladies tee box to hole #18 that will make that hole much more enjoyable to play. We have also made improvements to the stream on hole #1 at both the bridge and near the fairway bunkers. We will be addressing several streams throughout the golf course to enhance their natural beauty. We will also be working to improve the firmness to the fairways; I will elaborate more once we start the process. I want to thank you all for your support. I look forward to a great 2014 golf season! FITNESS From Our Fitness Director... Welcome to the 2014 season at the Fitness Center. I am excited to have everyone returning for another season here in spectacular Lake Toxaway. New members, please stop in for a tour of our facility and remember to call ahead to take advantage of our complimentary fitness orientation to help acquaint you with the facility and begin your training program. Our returning clientele are encouraged to email me at anniec@laketoxawaycc.com or call (828) 862-6571 to set up your training schedule. Elayne Fischer will be returning to teach her upbeat and challenging Total Body Conditioning class beginning June 2. You do not need to make reservations for this class, but please note the change in class fees this year. Tony Smith has taken a full-time position at a club in Florida and will not be returning to Lake Toxaway this season. Kim Hough, our yoga instructor, has also decided to remain in Florida this year for personal and professional reasons. We will miss both of these highly valued trainers and wish them all the best. I am continuing to interview other yoga/fitness instructors for additional classes, so look for further updates. We have an exciting line-up of hiking tours arranged this season exploring Panthertown, the Blue Ridge, and Pisgah Forest National Park. Check the calendar for dates and times from May through October. Our first hike, led by Chip Brown, will be on Saturday, May 24. There is no cost to attend, but please sign up in advance by calling the Fitness Center. Over the winter, I passed the American Council on Exercise Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist exam. This education continues to fuel my passion for assisting individuals with orthopedic concerns and chronic health conditions. Ultimately, my goal is to work with health care providers, physical therapists, and nutrition educators in our area to better serve the community here at Lake Toxaway. While the old adage “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is so very true, we seek to assist you wherever you find yourself along the health continuum. With this in mind, please remember to stop by the fitness center to update your health history or email me to request that I send you a copy. Once again, a hearty welcome back to this magnificent home in the mountains!

TENNIS Tennis Committee Update The tennis season is upon us, and we are planning an active and exciting season with hopefully less rain this season than last. The courts are ready for play, and the pro shop will open on May 1. Our inimitable tennis pro, Kenny Lovett, has some commitments in Florida to take care of during May, and will not be with us until early June. Filling in until he returns will be Ivo Dentchev, the tennis director at Brevard Racquet Club. Many of you are very familiar with Ivo: he has participated in our Pro-Am event for years and has been Korey’s mentor and a close friend of the Lovetts. Originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, Ivo played on the Men’s ATP Tour and participated in Davis Cup Tennis for his country. As a junior player, he was ranked #1 in this country in 12’s, 14’s, and 18’s, and in the top 100 in the world. Ivo has been a USPTA Professional 1 since 1999. He has worked extensively with event and tournament planning and has been in the private club and resort industry for more than 15 years. Ivo will be at the club Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30am till 2:00pm. He will organize weekly play, special events, and interclubs, and will be available for private lessons. Ivo will be ably assisted by Korey Lovett and Doris Brames, who we are very pleased to have returning. Our Tennis Committee of Leslie Brown, Ellen Campbell, Fred Devitt, and Bob Hamilton is working on improving communications with our tennis players and would-be tennis players, as well as our facilities and overall activities. The committee requests that any suggestions, requests, or complaints be directed to them so that they can do their best to see that they are appropriately handled. We are looking forward to a wonderful tennis season. We encourage all of our members who play or would like to play to come out and get involved. 2014 Tennis Committee 6

Get Ready for the Season: Let Us Restring Your Racquets! If you’re one of those players who only restrings their tennis racquet when the strings break, you’re missing out on a lot of performance from your racquet. Strings lose their tension over time, resulting in a loss of control that can affect your play. The rule of thumb is to restring your racquet the same number of times per year that you play per week, but string tension is also affected by exposure to extreme temperatures. Keep your racquet playing well with a good, new set of strings—your game will love you for it! Drop your racquets off at the Tennis Pro Shop and we will restring them within 24 hours, guaranteed.

CROQUET Croquet Update... Spring greetings to all you CROQUETNUTS! Welcome back to the mountains. We hope you all survived this crazy winter. We are still experiencing an occasional blast of cold, but the remaining forecasts are calling for great days for lawn activity. Our fearless founder, George Enochs, has been busy over the winter working with the LTCC maintenance staff to nurture and prepare our courts for the upcoming season. You will all be pleased with the shape they are in for the beginning of croquet.

George Bagwell, our current Mallet Club president, has also been busy over the off-season getting us ready. The courts are ready for use and please remember to utilize the LTCC reservation system to schedule your court times. The more you use the online system, the easier it gets, and you also have the benefit of regular reminders of your scheduled times.
to visit and support Don and George, and to play a little golf croquet as well. Don proved to be a strong contender in his flight, while George faltered slightly in the early stage of the top flight and then roared back to win the tournament in a hotly-contested finals match with Sandy Knuth. George is now ranked in the top fifty players in the US in American Rules play. Way to go guys!
Speaking of George Bagwell, he and Don Molitor, both noteworthy CROQUETNUTS, represented our Mallet Club in the Charles Stuber Invitational Tournament held at the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach this past February. During the tournament, Jim and Becky Dockter, Gary and Carol Harden, and Charlie and Jeanne Simon came over
As always, we have a full court of activities planned for 2014. Opening day for Wine & Wickets will be May 19, so go ahead and reserve your space and be sure to make dinner reservations at the club for post-W&W fun. Don Molitor is taking charge of the learning sessions for new and beginner players prior to each Wine & Wickets event. If you want to get some organized Golf Croquet practice in, remember that Singles Golf Croquet on Sundays at 3:00pm begins June 1.

Interclub matches are just around the corner. These matches are for beginning and experienced players with a focus on creating a comfortable, fun, and socially competitive Golf Croquet experience. We have to thank Ted Mullet for stepping up to the wicket to take charge of Interclubs this year, and we must also commend Carol and Gary Harden for heading this up last year and getting this year’s schedule in place. Ted would love it if we came to him to sign up. Not to be forgotten is our extremely popular “Feast with Friends” dinner series. Four Monday evening specials are again being planned this year under the guidance of Alex Alexander. Details will be forthcoming, but in past years, every dinner has been fully booked, so make your reservations early. Our season will culminate with another series of exciting events: the LTMC Intraclub Tournament, the Interclub Mountain Challenge, our own USCAsanctioned Golf Croquet Tournament, and the alwaysexciting Lake Toxaway Mountain Challenge croquet exhibition. Remember that each one of you are our best ambassadors for recruiting new CROQUETNUTS, so talk up the sport to friends and neighbors. And do not forget to pay your dues for the 2014 season to Fred Caswell. It is now time to bleach those whites, polish your mallets, and head to the wickets. See you on the courts!

MEMBERSHIP Aspiration Subcommittee From our Membership Director... Spring has arrived with warmer temperatures, blue skies, and sunny days! It is a fantastic time to be in the mountains. The Membership Drive is proving to be quite successful. Since announcing the drive, 20 new families have joined. To help promote continued growth, the Executive Committee has implemented marketing initiatives in conjunction with the membership drive. With continued growth, the club will thrive and flourish, which allows new programs to be added and enables enhancement of our facilities. A larger, more diverse club membership provides community for you and your family to socialize and interact with. But most of all membership growth helps us control the cost to you and your family and creates good financial health for the club that you love. I welcome any suggestions you may have to encourage club participation and growth. Stop by my office, call, or email me: I would love to hear any and all ideas. Please continue to be ambassadors of the club and encourage colleagues, friends and neighbors to consider the benefits of joining Lake Toxaway Country Club. If you know of someone who is interested in club membership, please contact me with their name, address, and phone number so I can reach out to them. With your support and recommendation, we will continue to develop the club to meet your needs and become the club of the future. On a personal note, please let me say thank you for continuing to check up on me and my progress throughout the winter months. It is hard to believe that March 28 marked the one-year anniversary of my surgery. All is well and I feel great! Your kind words and support have meant a great deal to me. If I can do anything to make your club experience better, please feel free to call on me. I will be more than happy to listen and assist in any way I can. I look forward to seeing everyone soon! The Freedom of Paul’s Letter It is a pleasure to offer the study of Galatians this summer at the Ladies Back Porch Bible Study. We will have a welcoming get-together at the club on June 16 at 1:00pm, with all women and their guests invited to attend. You may pick up your study guide for the summer and see returning friends and acquaintances! We will meet every Monday at 1:00pm in the clubhouse, with the first lesson on June 23. After a recess on July 7, we will reconvene on July 14 and meet until our luncheon on August 11. We look forward to delving into what Paul wrote about the laws in his letter to the Galatians. Timothy Keller has written this study guide with tremendous application principles and excellent discussion questions. We will continue our format of group discussion with our facilitators. Come and hear Paul’s writings as he shares the Word and wisdom of Scripture. It is a pleasure to study together, share in fellowship, and become “iron sharpening iron” in this community of women! Please feel free to call Leslie Brown at (828) 862-3287 with any questions.

I really enjoyed overseeing the Greystone dining operation last year, but I am even more excited to be able to spend time concentrating on member dining at the club this year. We have many of last year’s waitstaff returning, and I have hired several great new faces that I’m sure you will meet soon. Please let me know if there’s anything I can do to enhance your experience. Be sure to make reservations soon. Bring some old friends and meet some new ones while watching the big race here in our 19th Hole bar. Don’t forget to dress for the occasion! May 11 will be our Mother’s Day Brunch here at the club. Come enjoy your favorite breakfast and lunch foods while spending some quality time with your family. You may make your reservations online or by calling the front desk. Last year we had a great crowd for our wine dinners and I am hoping to see even more of you this year! We will kick off the dinners on Wednesday, May 21 with wines from Napa Valley’s own Flora Springs winery, accompanied by good food and great company. Make sure to mark your calendars for the rest of this season’s wine dinners, which will be held on June 11, September 3, October 1, and October 15. Reservations are required and seating is limited for all these dinners. You don’t have to wait to make your reservations: RSVP online or call the club’s receptionist today. Coming up in June, we have even more great events, including our second annual Member Welcome Back Party on June 13 (see more information on page 12). I hope to see you all there! Erin Schlegel
