President’s Message from David Dew The 2012 season is off to a fantastic start, and the staff is delighted to welcome you back to the club. Each day, it is so exciting for me to greet familiar faces and hear all the wonderful winter stories about grand vacations and grandchildren. Please stop by the club and let us know that you are back in town. We are glad to know you are here! Our new website is up and running and members are really beginning to use it to make tee times, court times, and reservations for events. If you have not already done so, be sure to log in to the new website soon. All member profiles are set to “private” by default, but you may choose to “unhide” your profile so that other members can interact with you. Uploading a photo of yourself will be a tremendous help to our staff, as well as to your fellow members. We are excited to welcome three summer interns and one new assistant manager to Lake Toxaway this summer. These young people come from highly regarded university programs and bring enthusiasm and new ideas while gaining valuable real-world experience in our industry. Two of the hospitality interns will be primarily focused on the dining rooms and clubhouse. Joel Mathis recently earned his degree in hospitality management with a focus on club management at the University of South Carolina at Beaufort. Patrick Hamel is a rising senior at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC, majoring in business administration with a concentration in resort and club management. Both young men are very active in their school chapters of the Club Managers Association of America and applied for the internship positions while attending the CMAA World Conference. Our third intern, Brody Hilton, will be assisting golf course superintendent Steve Turner. Brody is in his final year of the golf course superintendents program at Florida Gateway College and will graduate on completion of this internship. We also welcome Cathleen Zuzelski, a recent graduate from Michigan State University with a degree in hospitality business. Cathleen will be working as a dining room manager. continued on pg 2....
President’s Message continued...
Golf Course Conditions The winter in Lake Toxaway was mild. The unseasonably warm weather got our grasses off to an early start, but the high temperatures also created a new set of challenges for almost every bent grass course across the southeast. Steven and his crew successfully waged an early spring battle with “summer patch,” a disease that typically does not present itself until “summer.” Fortunately, due to their vigilance, the fairways and greens are now in great condition. By applying post-emergents and carefully managing mowing heights against the extreme fluctuating temperatures, Steven was able to successfully fend off Mother Nature’s curve ball. As part of our commitment to great golf conditions, Steven Turner continues to draw on outside expertise from Tim Moraghan. Many of you have met Tim on his previous trips to Lake Toxaway. He is dubbed the “grass guru” because he has 30 years of experience in the industry and was Director of Championship Agronomy for the United States Golf Association for over two decades setting up every major tournament during that time. Tim traveled from New Jersey to Lake Toxaway in mid-May to help Steven evaluate the course conditions. During his visit, Tim was very impressed with conditions at Lake Toxaway. He wrote, “As we toured the golf course, the information gathered indicated that while spring arrived early and there was initial concern regarding specific portions of the golf course (diseased primary rough grass), all necessary postemergent control efforts were initiated and the negative conditions reversed. The affected turf grasses are on the mend, beginning to grow at an acceptable rate with future pesticide and fertility applications planned and executed.” As always, Tim offered some great suggestions to further improve the grasses throughout this season, but the final word from the “grass guru” was: Lake Toxaway’s fairways and greens are in fantastic

condition, especially compared to other courses in the southeast. Tim will continue to work throughout the year with Steve Turner to further develop long-term agronomic plans to optimize our turf.
WeatherBug Lightning Alert System As suggested by members and in response to feedback from out last survey, we have installed a WeatherBug station at the clubhouse. The station provides precise real-time weather condition monitoring that can be viewed from anywhere, including your iPhone or iPad. It also incorporates a lightning detection system for your safety. While no system can perfectly predict a lightning strike, this state-of-theart technology is the best available and uses the most advanced severe weather detection methods available to identify both in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning. A long 10-second blast is sounded any time lightning is detected within a 6-mile radius of the clubhouse; 3 short blasts is the all-clear signal. When you hear the 10-second blast, you should immediately seek shelter. According to the National Lightning Safety Institute, the safest place to be during a lightning storm is in a substantial fully enclosed building or fully enclosed metal vehicle such as a car or truck with the windows completely shut. Unsafe places include underneath canopies, small picnic or rain shelters, or near trees. When you hear a lightning alert, you should immediately return to the clubhouse. In the event that you cannot find shelter and are forced to remain outdoors, you should crouch down with your feet together and stay 15 feet away from other people. Avoid water, high ground, open spaces, and all metal objects including wires, fences, and machinery. Please stop by the Pro Shop and familiarize yourself with the new system. Many great events are happening this summer and the lineup of activities is action packed. The staff is looking forward to a great summer season. We all sincerely appreciate your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you at the club.

What you do prior to swinging the club is more important than what you do during the swing. The basics that are very essential to creating a repetitive swing are grip, alignment, ball position, and posture. Maintaining the angle of your spine throughout the swing will help in a better swing path, as well as good balance.

This season has gotten off to a great start. The weather has cooperated for play and has helped make our playing conditions impeccable. Even with increased play for this time of year, the new Visage system on our carts has enabled us to speed up the pace of play by ten minutes. We are finding that the system is very beneficial to both the golf shop and the golfers who have used it. At the Learning Center, you will notice a number of upgrades. New carpeting has been installed, and the golf shop at the center is fully stocked with the latest in golf equipment by several companies. We also have a number of demo clubs available for you to try; please ask one of the staff members for assistance in selecting a demo. The Taylor-Made cart fit system enables the staff to properly and personally fit you for clubs. The purchase of a launch monitor will enable us to get vital numbers for club fitting as well as teaching. The month of June is busy with events and interclub matches for both men and women. Copies of the golf schedule and interclub schedule are available outside the Pro Shop. You may sign up for events and interclub matches two weeks prior to each date.

Thanks to all your amazing support as Korey has worked so hard to reach the top. .
RECOGNIZE YOUR STRENGTHS How does recognizing strengths and weaknesses relate to the shot selection in a player’s game? Being able to recognize your own strengths and weaknesses—as well as your opponent’s—is essential to building a successful game plan. Ideally, you want choose your tactics based on your strengths and attack the opponent’s weaknesses. Knowing where you can get hurt and where you can hurt the opponent are key points in your shot selection.

Wine & Wickets The season for the CROQUETNUTS officially kicked off on May 14. Rain had been falling for hours, the skies were dark, the forecast looked even worse, but just in time for Wine & Wickets, Mother Nature demonstrated that “it does not rain on the croquet courts.” A crowd of true believers showed up to inaugurate the exceptional new lawn. Alan McDonald won a shootout with a loooong wicket shot to be the day’s champion. Following croquet, the players gravitated to the new digs of the “Croquet Corner” in the Main Dining Room for a good meal, socializing, and DOLLAR BEER…What a deal! On May 21, Wine & Wickets commenced with the usual enthusiasm. An unsubstantiated rumor has surfaced that it was raining on the croquet courts, BUT DO NOT BELIEVE IT! The only witness last observed 32 players on the courts at 3:30pm, prior to being carried away by tornadic winds and recovering just in time to join 40 other CROQUETNUTS at the club for dinner.
CROQUET long battle with tongue cancer in May. He was an icon for croquet and will be sorely missed by everyone who was involved in the sport.
Another Croquet Lawn Coming to the Mountains With assistance and leadership from Lake Toxaway, Cullasaja is planning to build new croquet lawns. Construction should begin in the fall and be available for play in the summer of 2013. The number of mountain clubs participating in croquet has expanded dramatically since Toxaway completed our lawns in 2008, and there should be some fun interclub competition in coming years. The simple reason for croquet’s growth and popularity is: IT’S FUN! Welcome back everyone.
FIRST Feast with Friends Our first Feast With Friends dinner is scheduled for June 11. The speaker chair, Peter Elder, has lined up an attractive series of speakers with the theme of “Children and Grandchildren of our Members.” The first speaker, John Nichols III, will deliver a fascinating presentation on the history of Toxaway. Make your reservations for June 11 and be sure to bring friends who do not play croquet, since this is an all-Toxaway event. Les Avera Wins Flight at Fosse Invitational One of our Mallet Club members, Lester Avera, competed in the Dorothy Fosse Invitational tournament in Palm Coast, Fla., and won his flight by going undefeated for eleven games at this well-known and prestigious tournament. Congratulations, Les! Passing of Archie Peck Many of us us know and have benefitted from instruction and assistance with all croquet matters from Archie Peck, the operations manager of the National Croquet Center in West Palm Beach. I am delighted to welcome several new trainers and instructors to our staff at the Fitness Center. Last month, I introduced Tony Smith, a NASM certified personal trainer and post-rehabilitation specialist, who has worked at The Medalist Country Club, Jonathan’s Landing Club, The Old Marsh Golf Club, Loxahatchee Club, and the Chattooga Club, to name a few. I believe we are fortunate to host him this year at Lake Toxaway, and I hope you will utilize his expertise throughout the season. Say hello to Tony at Friday Friends on June 1 and 8. Personal training appointments with Tony or me can be made by calling (828) 862-6571. Elayne Fischer, an AFFA certified trainer and instructor, comes to us from Florida. She has over 37 years of fitness training experience including personal training and group fitness classes such as circuit, aquatic, yoga, step, Pilates and indoor cycling. She has owned and operated her own fitness studio and is well acquainted with the mountain country clubs. We are excited to have her join our team this year. You can meet Elayne on Monday, June 4 for her first Total Body Conditioning class at 9:00am. Kim Hough is a yoga/meditation instructor and massage therapist from South Florida. After spending over 18 years in corporate management, sales, and marketing primarily in the hospitality industry, she decided to teach and do customized bodywork full time. Her own 6

yoga practice is constantly evolving as she explores all styles and expressions of yoga to ensure that students are continually challenged and growing. Kim will be teaching yoga on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday mornings. In addition to yoga, she believes that massage is the best gift you can give yourself! Kim is certified in many modalities of bodywork including Thai massage, Hawaiian Lomi Lomi, and Active Isolated Stretching. You can make an appointment for massage with Kim by calling the Lakeside Spa at (828) 966-4700. Joan Furniss is a fitness instructor with 30 years of experience, holding BS and MT degrees and certifications from AFAA, Fitour, Nia, and Les Mills. She has taught a wide variety of classes, always with the goal to motivate participants to feel their best and be fit for life. Joan returns to Lake Toxaway again this year to teach Ball, Balance, and Strength Conditioning classes on Wednesday and Pilates on Thursday. On a personal note, I would like to thank each member and staff who has so graciously supported and prayed for me and my family in the recent passing of my dear mom. It is truly a blessing to have a second family here in Lake Toxaway to lean on and depend on during tough times. I realize so many of you know firsthand what that is like. My sincere thanks. - Annie Cruzan

CLUBHOUSE From The Clubhouse Manager My name is Walker Taylor and I love what I do. I was raised in my father’s restaurants and bars where he knew his four sons were his best labor pool. I have been in the private club business since 1988. I have been coming to these mountains since 1967 and made them my home in 1996. I live in Cashiers with my wife of five years, Robin (the Foundation Director at Highlands-Cashiers Hospital) and my chocolate lab, Two (she is my second “daughter”). We are big hikers and can be found most weekends in the winter on trails all over the plateau. My first daughter, Natalie, lives in Charleston and is also in the hospitality business. Since I joined the Lake Toxaway team in April, I have been working at a dead trot learning the systems, traditions, and culture of this great organization… and there is a lot to learn. I am very impressed with the facilities and am particularly thankful for the great people who also work here. Everyone has bent over backwards to show me the ropes and give me the information I have needed to take on my position. Of course the most important piece of a successful club operation is the members. There, too, everyone I have met makes me believe that this is a great place to work. I will work hard to help our team facilitate the best experience we can provide for you, whether that is excellent and enjoyable dining service, responsive attention to your needs and goals, or simply a great summer camp for adults. If I don’t get to you first, please call me over and let me introduce myself to you properly. We are going to have a great summer!
Sunday Brunch is always in the Main Dining Room except for June 24, when it will be offered in the Toxaway Room. Dinner will be served in the Toxaway Room due to private parties in the Main Dining Room on June 16 and 30.

Help Us Help You! To provide our members with the best possible service, we ask that you make reservations for evening dining. We will always strive to serve you well, but if we know when to expect you, we can better prepare our staff and our kitchens. Over the last several weeks, we have experienced around a 40% walk-in rate on Friday nights, with nearly all of these members expecting seating and service at 7:00pm. This inevitably results in frustration for members because servers cannot meet expectations. We realize that plans change, and we sincerely appreciate your patronage. However, we respectfully request that you make reservations and arrive at your reserved time. While we will always attempt to reasonably accommodate all of our members, priority will be given to those with advance reservations. Reservations for club dining, golf, tennis, croquet, and special events can be made online using the club’s website: www.laketoxawaycc.com or by calling the club at (828) 966-4020. You can make or change regular dining reservations online up to 30 days in advance, but no later than 24 hours prior. To make or change reservations on the same day, please call (828) 966-4020. Dining reservations are required for breakfast and dinner in the Lakeside Dining Room, and can be made by calling (828) 966-4700.
